When I saw this video pop up on YouTube, I have to admit I thought it was going to be a joke.

But this guy actually makes all-E tuning work. Pretty amazing.

Ouch. Lunatic fringe in my area always there but happily ignored

The city closed Main to vehicle traffic to make a nice dining district outdoors. The 1885 built city hall has a series of 9 great marble relief faces on the outside.

There is the beach and art and a historic mission and a great promenade to walk and ride bikes

But yeah, there is a reason it’s called Ventucky

The Republican National Committee says no final decision has been made about whether President Trump’s renomination will be held in private at the GOP convention, contradicting previous reports that restrictions on crowd size during the coronavirus pandemic would prevent members of the press from attending.

its the age old argument against natural selection and for some other mechanism

and the ones I’m lukewarm about, it’s not that I don’t think they could do the job. It’s that there another job, a cabinet spot or an agency head, that I’d rather see them in.

Anne Louise Avery is one of my favorite story tellers on twitter. She gathers photos and vintage art to weave tales.
This one, as writer myself, I particularly enjoyed:

[Embedded content]

The rest, in her TL (there is a happy ending).
(Anne Louise also identifies the vintage pieces that she shares.)

I’m very glad there is a happy ending: if Sea Otter and Ermine are guzzling Pusser’s Rum*, I would seriously expect a denouement involving significant bloodshed, and tut-tutting over the diminution of endangered species…

* I usually like rum: after trying some, I decided to make a life-long exception for Pussers….

What I don’t like, though, is the the selectee will be seen as a token pick.

That’s what is troubling me about this whole process.

Any choice he would have made would have been seen as pandering to some group.

Greetings once again from just outside Lassen Nat’l Park. Today we hiked through an area that a fire went through a few years ago. The trail was closed for a few years after the fire because of the Murder Trees (not an official description.) Apparently it’s safe enough to hike in now.

These trees show the hazards a little better, but the light was better in the first picture.

Happily, we survived. Lots of things to see-many wildflowers, though no big sweeps of color, and birds, bugs and stuff.

I kind of kept an eye on mask wearing, and probably 3/4 of people were wearing them when near others, even though we were all outside. The distressing part is who wasn’t wearing them. Largely groups of extended family members or groups of young adults. There was even what looked like a weekend-long family reunion with dozens of unmasked people near our vacation rental. Just because you are related to someone doesn’t mean you can’t spread it to them.
I can now definitively report that mask wearing does not make it hard to breathe. In fact, hiking above 8000’ on a very dry day we left our masks on even when nowhere near other people because it makes the air you inhale a bit more humid which beats the dry air.
Masks were also useful this morning as it was quite smokey from a wildfire for a couple hours (then the wind shifted and things cleared up.)
I noticed no difference in my ability to breathe the day I didn’t wear a mask while hiking (because we saw 2 people in 4+ hours and the air quality was fine.)

Tomorrow we head home and back to reality, but it has been a lovely break.

The most notable one I can think of is probably the Fed head Powell and Trump’s bern trying to get him fired for longer than he’s ever wanted to keep him. I have a work phone and I don’t do anything on it except answer pages and occasionally look at email. Except for the weeks I’m on call, it stays on my desk. I’m certainly not putting TikTok on it.

I’m not sure what your point is here, but I will say that one cannot live “purely” in this world, that there are compromises one has to make. Yeah, I could quit my job at the evil too big to fail bank due to moral outrage, but where else am I going to work that there isn’t something *wrong* going on? Every day, everywhere, every place there are major issues and micro aggressions daily. We can work on them as they’re called out to us or discovered. But while I am not thrilled that the bank side was doing things that were legally, ethically or morally compromised, on the tech side, I think we’ve done a pretty good job within the constraints we were and are given.

There is a cartoon by Claire Bretécher from the 1970s, which is behind the preview. It’s in French; I originally read it in a French textbook. Basically it’s about a guy wanting to be a purist and it doesn’t work.

Exactly. Like trying to buy your gas from a “good ” oil company. Can’t happen. Choose your demon because we all have to dance with the devil anyway.

I just want to say that whenever I hear “TikTok” I automatically think not of the application, but of Tik-Tok the mechanical man from the Wizard of Oz books.

I downloaded TikTok out of spite but I have to say the pets of TikTok are quite amusing

… there are compromises one has to make.

After all these years, I’ve come to the conclusion living=compromising.

Real life requires us to make compromises all the time. And if one wants to discuss the real world, then we need to discuss how we manage our compromises and why we choose one over another.

Baum’s writing is definitely dated, but that movie was, as you say, an abomination. I loved the Oz books and grew up reading my Dad’s old copies - my sister still has them. Family heirlooms.

Mom bought a set of Oz and John Carter books for me when I was a kid. Loved reading those stories. Grew up thinking Mars was like Barzoom and Robinson Crusoe on Mars. Boy was I dejected when the Pioneer probes showed Mars to be lifeless…

Please tweet that!! Perfect analogy.

The recent John Carter movie was actually really good for a fan of Barsoom.

re: #216 William Lewis

The recent John Carter movie was actually really good for a fan of Barsoom.

My understanding was that the director was a lifetime Barsoom fanboy, and part of the reason the movie didn’t do well is that you have to find fairly hardcore, genre-history-aware SF fans to even know what that series was in the US these days.

I’d read the first book or two as a teenager, but then I’d read a very large portion of the SF shelves at the library, and I only went looking for it because of the explicit references in Heinlein. (Number of the Beast, which is kind of what I define as the starting point of Late Heinlein. I’ve come to the point I don’t really want to acknowledge anything after Time Enough For Love, there’s such a thing as crawling up into your own head and pulling the ladder up after yourself.)

Barsoom always kind of came across as pure pulp to me. It was amusing light reading, but gratuitous and fanservicey in a pre-modern sort of way. I ought to look up to see if anyone has done a modern fanfiction treatment of it.

But it had the worst marketing possible so it was gone from the theaters within a week.

I liked Friday and Job as the story was worth tolerating the BS. The others, eh, not so much. Although I do need to check out the alternative manuscript of Number recently published as The Pursuit of the Pankara that is supposed to be a better take on that weirdness.

Friday had its moments but felt like it turned into the worst sort of literary nihilism. Job was a little too on-the-spot as far as my theological paranoias went at the age I read it, but was a nicely constructed novel. Except for the multi-page rant about traffic lights.
