It’s a primary election. I let the locals decide who they want for the Democratic nominee. If he’s selected, maybe I’ll send a few bucks his way but there are probably other candidates who the Democratic establishment favors. Surprised he’s missing the endorsement of Tulsi — that would be the ultimate trifecta!

Jeez, I have to get off Twitter too. Every time one of those anti-abortion threads comes up, I just completely lose my shit. Then I remember being that sixteen year old girl being told I was a slut by an allegedly pro-life nurse because I had sex once and thought I was pregnant. And then I remember being a 26 YO law school student who thought I was pregnant in my first semester, and a friend of mine dying of AIDS drove me over to the drug store so I could get a pregnancy test. (Also negative; I learned later that practically every woman I talked to at my law school was so stressed out they stopped menstruating their first semester.) And then I want to rip people’s lungs out, which is not good for my mental health.

Damn. Leo Fleisher died today at 92. A great teacher, conductor, and classical pianist, he rebuilt a career after having a hand made useless by a neurological disorder.

He is the father of a dear friend of ours. Our hearts go out to Deborah and Dickie, both harpists, his nieces and nephews, and the rest of his extended family.

He was old enough that the shiva will be small, bit his loss will be felt across a huge swath of the classical musical community.

We met him, we knew him, and he was an absolute mensch.

An emergency ordinance in Omaha requires six of the seven councilmembers to vote aye. The mayor is opposed. The whole playing of the Star-Spangled Banner at games didn’t start until after the 1918 World Series, where it was performed during the Seventh Inning Stretch and received such a huge applause after the players saluted the flag that they repeated the performances through the rest of the series. And even after the Series, it was still something that was not observed by the entire league, nor was it something done at the beginning of each and every game while the players stood with hands on hearts. It wasn’t even really until the SSB became recognized by law as the national anthem and loudspeakers the norm at stadiums that it was played more often.

The first league to officially adopt it across all teams was the NFL in 1945, with the commissioner declaring it a war-time tradition that he wanted to keep going even after the war had officially ended. The MLB followed suit and so it became a “tradition” that was adopted as a form of enforced hero worship than some “hallow tradition” that has always been a part of the sport.

I actually read the novel ages after I saw the film originally, but it was only recently that a review of both reminded me of why Hammond got a serious upgrade as a character in the latter due to Spielberg’s influence. Crichton wrote him not as some benevolent fellow looking to bring the wonders of dinosaurs to the masses, but a huckster who’d made his fortune abusing genetic research in order to make a profit. The park was just the ultimate con, selling the public tickets to see big and scary monsters in the vein of P.T. Barnum.

In the original novel, Nedry wasn’t an employee who felt was underpaid, he was actually an employee of an IT company that InGen had hired to build their network. But despite having a contract with the company, he kept being ordered to do more work that was outside the boundaries of the contract. And every time he complained or demanded more money for the extra work, they threatened him with lawsuits and sent letters to his other clients alleging he was “unreliable.” So he wasn’t a greedy asshole so much as a disgruntled employee who was tired of being exploited.

That said, Sunday’s report of those districts which did report is +311 cases.

University of Nebraska Medical Center researchers report that they have found, for what appears to be the first time, intact and potentially infectious coronavirus in some tiny airborne particles collected from the rooms of COVID-19 patients.

The researchers say their study supports evidence indicating that the virus, formally known as SARS-CoV-2, can be transmitted in an airborne fashion.

“I hope this says, ‘The concern over airborne transmission is legitimate enough that we need to really start taking it seriously and not just pay lip service to it,’ ” said Joshua Santarpia, an associate professor of pathology and microbiology at UNMC.

The next question, he said, is how much of a role the airborne route plays in transmitting the virus, compared to other modes, namely the larger droplets produced when people cough or sneeze.

There is no evidence that many people refused to go back to their old jobs (when available) on account of the $600 they were getting. They knew very well that the $600 payments were temporary but refusing to go back to work when that was possible meant losing that job forever. But punishing poor people for being poor is so ingrained in Republican thought that they can’t break the grip, even when sticking with that view badly hurts their party

I don’t mean using schools to teach children a political religion ideology is inimical to society.

We had that education during the Great Depression. Parents taught their children this. They saw the absolute desolation wrought on the country by the Hoover Administration as everything it did plunged the country deeper into economic depression, job loss, and starvation. Parents instructed their children on exactly who was responsible for the nation’s misery.

It was decades before Republicans had real national power again, as that education of what conservatism really does was left behind in the aftermath of World War Two.

Children can socialise and play in small groups of parents who, in the time of conservative genocide, hold to small groups of others they trust not to do things such as break quarantines or ignore health safety rules.

Mostly this involves cutting conservatives out of your groups.

It doesn’t matter if you live in a tiny town like mine or a megopolis like New York. It does involve getting to know those who live around you and whether they accept things like medical consensus. Those who disdain experts because they are experts, or those who get their degrees from Internet U should be pushed out of your life for your own safety.

In fact, living in a large city offers more chance for children to socialise safely with people than in a small insular conservative town like mine. (Fortunately here we are reorganising schooling for children since our two school districts are closed. Even people without children can volunteer time to educate children, and they can play together here as long as we remain virus-free in my town.)

If this is not possible for whatever reason, then you are left with two choices concerning children and socialisation. You can choose between the importance of socialising, or the importance of life, because if they are dead they won’t be socialising anyway. The trauma of missing friendships as a child pales to the trauma of losing one or both parents to disease and wondering if you were the cause.

When I was in sixth grade, my mother was attending Michigan State University.

Our school was the testing ground for every idea from the university, good and bad.

In seventh grade, when I went to live with my grandparents, the school tested me and found my math skills were very poor. My mother noted the school was teaching “new math” when I was in sixth grade (then a new idea). The school’s response was “we know how to fix that.”

I went from remedial mathematics in seventh grade to catching up by the time I was in ninth grade.

Won’t work anywhere

Afaik, any state can select electors or hold a vote and have the result used in elector designation. They must decide in advance. They cannot hold a vote and then ignore a result they don’t like.

Further, if some states tried, as the numbers stand today there are not enough R states to make it ultimately work for Trump’s favor

Finally even if it were somehow successful it would quite obviously be seen (by most everybody r and d) as delegitimizing the entire process and thus delegitimizes the office itself.

There would be no ability to govern in any sense of the word because there would no longer be consent of the governed.

Never gonna happen

I suspect this varies a lot by school district. My kids took APUSH (AP U.S. History I think) and learned way more about U.S. history than I ever did. Not just facts and dates either - analysis and lines of argument and thought. I can’t speak for what kids in less funded and more conservative areas are learning, but blue suburban schools aren’t messing around - if only because they want their kids to get into good colleges.

A small-ish observation about socializing kids via school:

What about all the misfits and victims of bullies that our schools overlook and do little to help? There’s more of those kids than we think. And even the “popular” kids can fall victim to it. All it takes is one faux pas, breaking the made up popularity rules, and that’s it. Yes, kids can and do make lifelong friendships in a school setting. But some really awful and unhelpful shit gets learned as well. And the standards of perfection that kids set while making their own social structures are arbitrary and mean. It’s also not the real world at large. It’s really not natural to stuff kids in large numbers into a building for the length of a workday and expect everyone to magically meld into a community. I am not at all anti school, but we place way too much on the shoulders of teachers and the school system to “socialize our children”, that isn’t their job, especially to deal with problems coming from home to school. Schools can be a very unhealthy environment to expect a healthy result, and there are no longer therapists and social workers in most schools to help. School “counselors” don’t do that job anymore, they are there to help the students headed for college navigate that process. Hell most school districts don’t even have a school nurse, or the ones they have are only there a couple days a week.

Maybe trying to teach kids to reach out and make friends beyond the classroom would be a start. Something beyond sports and church. There is a ton of shit that could help but it takes time and parents don’t have it because this system is set in ways that aren’t always helpful. Trying to organize it via schools means navigating a world of “Karen Moms” who don’t want their angels doing anything that’s not “christian” or is deemed “virtue signalling”. I’ve been involved in some of those failed projects and all of them were brought down by parents who thought a victory garden was encouraging their kids to get their hands dirty and not want that big business job. Or who thought meditation or mindfulness for a few moments to begin the day was satanic because it was from another religion. There are stories of this crap nationwide.

I am saying all this as someone who had to quit working and spend 13 yrs involved in the day to day aspects of having a kid with learning disabilities in public schools. I was physically in a school building for hours at least 3 days a week, and some of that was due to antisocial behaviors from the so called” normal” kids. Maybe school is a bad place to learn social skills for some kids. I can tell you stories, and not just about my son, that might make you change your mind about the wisdom of that line of thinking. We’re not prepping kids with any life skills at school really. There’s little focus on that at all. In my son’s case his social life began in the last year of high school by going to metal shows at a low level local club and going to large venues with my husband. That’s the community that embraced him and I don’t think a single one of his friends came from high school or earlier grades. Some of the kindest and nicest people in the world are covered in tatts and piercings and look like they could fuck you up in a heartbeat. That didn’t come from high school hallways or grade school activities.

I remember we were taught 2 years of American History in 8th and 11th grade. World History in 12th. Civics and Pennsylvania History in 9th grade. @ years of foreign languages required, every year English composition and literature required, Music required an opera or Gilbert and Sullivan operetta every year. Shakespeare play was required each year. At the end of the year all grades had to do the Iowa Basic Skills test.

Now Pennsylvania does none of that thanks to the revolt triggered by Common Core.

They are great.

I have a really nice combo air frier, oven (convection and regular) and toaster. Chicken thighs are a major easy treat now; marinate, throw in the basket for about 20 minutes and Nom.

As a bachelor I can get by with my rice cooker, instant pot, combo machine and my cast iron fry pan.

If you were poor, interested in some other venue such as vo-tech or the military, or not capable of college, the school counsellor would not talk to you at all in my school.

I had bullies in middle school when I was a kid, in the gifted program of all places because I was the poor kid in the group. My kids haven’t been free of them, but the schools have also been way more responsive to reports of it than when I was in school. But, even without the bullies, one part of socialising is dealing with people that aren’t like those you know at home. You have to learn what you like and what you don’t, and what biases you have that need to be changed. And you’re not going to learn that in small, self-selected groups.

But there really aren’t any other outlets around here for the kids to get together. He used to get together with his friends once a week outside of school, before the virus, but there wouldn’t have been many ways for them to meet outside of school. The only non-school social option is church, and, well, no.

My schools did not have a gifted programme. Too expensive for rural schools which had too few students who could attend such classes.

My wife on the other hand attended a gifted school programme in high school in St. Louis, and graduated when she was fifteen. She attended college at the University of Florida just after her sixteenth birthday. (Her parents had way more money than my mother did; they paid for all of her first degree in computer science.)

I know we can’t shelter kids from all kinds of people and their personalities forever and we shouldn’t. But schools are pretty much already bubbles of “like” people.

What has happened is that parents are too busy working to fit in other social outlets for their kids and we’ve just become comfortable with the idea that school will be the answer, via sports and other school sponsored activities. This is not bad, it’s just very limited. And in some cases there’s a very unhealthy environment that’s been there for a long time, which is tough to overcome.

We’re in a situation now with this pandemic that shows us the old models aren’t going to be fully functional for awhile, if ever. So we’re going to have to find other ways based on other things. Book clubs, bike riding clubs, star gazing groups, nature exploration, art, gaming, comic book collecting, there’s a host of things we could try setting up for our kids to do outside of school that could help refocus that. There’s also a ton of community service opportunities that young people could be involved in to create an investment in communities in which they live or neighborhoods in need in their area. And there is ALWAYS A NEED. We need a new focus, academics are obviously important, but they are NOT the ONLY things that matter. Sports have a place too, but only a small number of kids will excel at those things. Our visions are too narrow.

Sounds like my school days. I will never forget how fucking useless my eighth grade Vice-Principal was. Even after my parents confronted him in his office and told him to get his shit together and do something MULTIPLE TIMES, he didn’t do a damned thing. My parents pulled me out of school for the last two weeks of the year because they feared for my safety. Read that last sentence again.

Also, this was back in 1994. Somehow I doubt things have gotten much better these days.

English- we read Romeo and Juliet
Biology- included evolution, mitosis
Pre-Algebra (most ninth graders do Algebra but I wasn’t ready for it)
Gym
Basic Skills (part of my IEP, it was a study hall type class)
Forgetting my others but as you get at, kids are still being taught similar things. It’s more how we teach than what we teach. I think Virginia of my childhood put too much emphasis on standardized tests rather than material.

On some level it has got a bit better in some places, but there is still this attitude that dealing with bullies as a kid prepares you to deal with assholes as an adult and it’s part of growing up. Just deal with it. What this fails to acknowledge is that bullying is more far reaching in an individual’s life now. Especially with social media being what it is. Make one fuck up and it’s on the internet forever. Kids kill themselves over bullying and it’s not because kids are weaker, it’s that the forms of bullying have intensified and the personal level of attack is sharper and more able to exploit a person’s vulnerabilities. It can be impossible to escape the results of it and asking kids to give up social media is putting them at some disadvantages in today’s world. It’s out of balance. Righting that is going to take guidance from us and work on the part of the younger people this effects the most. It’s not an easy gig and it’s going to take work I’m not sure we’re culturally ready to take on.

Primarily it didn’t make it in because of national outage at Texas religious conservatives trying to whitewash slavery. It was only because Texas got too much scrutiny over that.

In the 2015 revision of textbooks, Texas actually passed standards, and McGraw Hill published textbooks referring to slaves as “economic migrants.” It was a nationwide outcry outside Texas which caused McGraw Hill to revise the textbooks, after a Houston teenager brought attention to her mother that her geography textbook referred to slaves that way (they’d already been adopted). Those books were not replaced until 2018 in Texas.

Back in 2010, the Texas board which oversees textbooks tried to do the same thing, except referred to slaves as “workers.”

From my 4th to 12th grade in Houston, the only black people I recall being mentioned in history classes were a passing mention of slavery/Civil War, George Washington Carver, and “The Yellow Rose of Texas” distracting Santa Ana at San Jacinto. Most African Americans were effectively erased until college history classes.

Primarily it didn’t make it in because of national outage at Texas religious conservatives trying to whitewash slavery. It was only because Texas got too much scrutiny over that.

In the 2015 revision of textbooks, Texas actually passed standards, and McGraw Hill published textbooks referring to slaves as “economic migrants.” It was a nationwide outcry outside Texas which caused McGraw Hill to revise the textbooks, after a Houston teenager brought attention to her mother that her geography textbook referred to slaves that way (they’d already been adopted). Those books were not replaced until 2018 in Texas.

Back in 2010, the Texas board which oversees textbooks tried to do the same thing, except referred to slaves as “workers.”

Texas is probably particularly embarrassed about the slavery thing since one reason they revolted in 1835 was that Mexico had banned slavery in 1829. (Other reasons beyond that of course regarding the powers of a federalizing central government, curtailing of rights, etc.)
