I wonder how much of this is from people letting their guards down. I know how easy “virus fatigue” can sent in but this is a long haul situation. Persistence is key.

Also sobering to see other countries freaking out over numbers that are a mere fraction of what our nation is dealing with.

In other countries there seems to be a concern for public health from the top. Our President is more worried about forts staying named after Confederate generals.

Fun from FB

Please don’t read ahead just follow step by step…

For as long as I can remember, I have loved math tricks. This one really works!
It will take you only about ten seconds and, amazingly, it will reveal your all-time favorite movie. I’m pretty good at math, so I did it in my head, then on paper, and finally on a calculator just to confirm my mathematical calculations. Each time I got the same answer, and sure enough, it is my very favorite movie…EVER! DO NOT cheat. DO YOUR math, THEN compare the results on the list of movies at the bottom. You will be AMAZED at how scary true and accurate this test is:
1. Pick a number from 1-9.
2. Multiply that number by 3.
3. Add 3.
4. Multiply by 3 again.
5. Your total will be a two digit number. Add the first and second digits together to find your favorite movie (of all time) in the list of 17 Movies, below.

Movie List:

I can’t imagine what coloured their investigation.

There are people actually trying to claim in that thread it had the same registration number as the motorcycle in question. Even if that was true (most states use a different numbering scheme for motorcycles than four-wheel vehicles), it tries to ignore the cops “confusing” a motorcycle for an SUV.

re: #30 jaunte

Do not accept domestic terrorism.

The family probably can’t sue the individual cops due to qualified immunity.

They need to sue Aurora hard enough to make the city rein in its police force (this needs to happen everywhere this crap occurs).

The other step is to make sure to always vote “no” on a general city bond (those can be used to fund payouts for police misconduct settlements).

The taxpayers will get the message soon enough if they have to keep seeing their budgets decimated by lawsuits against their cities, and if politicians won’t correct the police, then they get new politicians.

Wasn’t there a huge drop in birth rate during the Depression? It would seem that the decline is due to the same reasons: financial and job insecurity among a huge percentage of the population that is in the appropriate age range. If the society wants more babies, the economy must return and a resumption of economic growth requires the virus to be controlled. So everything again depends on the government doing what’s needed — and that will never happen under this administration.

re: #42 Hecuba’s daughter

In the United States and other developed countries, fertility tends to drop during periods of economic decline. U.S. fertility rates fell to low levels during the Great Depression (1930s), around the time of the 1970s “oil shock,” and since the onset of the recent recession in 2007 (see Figure 1). The U.S. total fertility rate (TFR) stood at 2.0 births per woman in 2009, but preliminary data from the National Center for Health Statistics show that the TFR dropped to 1.9 in 2010—well below the replacement level of 2.1.1 A similar decline—or leveling off—of fertility rates has been reported in Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and several other European countries.

The Decline in U.S. Fertility (PRB, more at the link)

[pedant] Fertility isn’t declining, number of births per woman are. [/pedant]

The article actually does talk about how there have been baby “booms” in the wake of major recessions/depressions in American history as couples feel economically secure enough to start having kids. But this streak broke with the Great Recession and the current recessions is likely only to deepen the hole.

The answer for the difference is pretty simple: While the recovery began within a year of the recession’s high point, it was almost exclusively geared towards the generations who’d already had the kids they intended (Boomers and Xers) while the generation that was coming of age (Millenials) was told to “suck it up” and “get to work” because the economy depended upon them. And ever since, my generation has been accused of being the cause of the collapse of all sorts of industries and “traditions” because we simply don’t have the money to support them.

The biggest issues that the government saw in dealing with the Great Recession weren’t about getting young people employed and financially secure, but about getting home prices back up as those were seen as “investments” for retirees and getting older workers either back to work or over the hump into retirement.

If a college graduate had to work two minimum wage jobs just to afford rent, then we were told that meant things were headed in the right direction because “AT LEAST HE HAS A JOB!!!”

Larry Hogan’s spirit governor.

Ricketts says state would sue if health director required masks in Douglas County (Omaha World-Herald, four hours ago)

Douglas County is rural in the west and Omaha and suburbs in the east.

LINCOLN — The State of Nebraska would have challenged an Omaha mask mandate in court, Gov. Pete Ricketts acknowledged Monday, filling in a key detail in last week’s unexpected turnabout from Douglas County’s health director on a local mask order.

Health Director Adi Pour, at a Friday press conference, cited “legal disagreements” between the state and the Omaha City Attorney’s Office in deciding to drop her push toward a mask mandate. She said the dispute had surfaced only in the previous 72 hours.

Some interesting news on the possible source of the Apple Fire in Southern California:

Authorities said Monday that the Apple Fire, which has burned more than 26,000 acres in Southern California, was caused by a “hot objects” emanating from a vehicle tailpipe.

Cal Fire officials said a diesel-fueled vehicle “emitting burning carbon from the exhaust system” had been identified as the source of the blaze. Authorities say they confirmed the cause following interviews with “multiple independent witnesses,” along with unspecified physical evidence.

Officials said no suspect had been taken into custody, and they were asking people with information on a vehicle with mechanical issues or “unusual smoke emitting from it” to contact investigators.

The Apple Fire, which began Friday, had grown to 26,850 acres late Monday — more than 41 square miles — and continued to threaten homes. Only 7% of its perimeter was contained as about 2,300 firefighting personnel battled the blaze and dropped water and fire retardant from the air.

eu.desertsun.com

That goes to the EU-compliant webpage of the Desert Sun, BTW.

Hmm….that bit about ….’a diesel-fueled vehicle “emitting burning carbon from the exhaust system”’ sounds like one of those coal-rolling mods some asshats do with their trucks.

I am called a Cassandra here by many, but we need to be wary of this potential Trump election gambit:

How Trump Could Steal the Election

It is the late evening of Nov. 3, 2020—Election Day. The race is tight. It’s come down to the three states that President Donald Trump barely won in 2016: Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Most in-person votes have been counted, and Trump holds a small lead in each state. But there are millions of mail-in ballots that election officials have not yet processed. Hundreds of thousands of voters dropped their ballots in the mail days ago, but they haven’t been received. Meanwhile, thousands of ballots that were mailed in time have been rejected due to alleged technical defects. The outcome of the election turns on all these outstanding votes. But Trump, on the basis of the results so far, declares victory and dismisses the remaining mail-in ballots as fraudulent and illegitimate. The Republican-controlled legislatures of all three states agree, assigning their electoral votes to the president. Trump has secured a second term in the White House.

OOOH, OOOH !!1!—I get to talk ON Topic (Tik-Tok).

Yesterday we executed a really stupid mission, getting Grandkid4 from N Florida to his mother in Denver. (More about that later.) We got a couple hours to talk in the airport. (More about that later.) Kid turned 10 days ago. He’s into Tik-Tok on his Android, under the tutelage of his father’s new family. His mother will ground the app when he gets home, but she has cover now—Kid knows it’s about to be “outlawed”, and so does his gang of cyber-kids. And they know who plans to outlaw it. It’s amazing to hear a 10 year old say “Trump” in a tone only I could manage.

He doesn’t have to be right or legal. If he creates enough doubt and confusion while controlling para-militaries and enough reactionary judges, the threat is plausible. There are probably several such avenues.

We can’t let this election be close.

But by assuming that legal challenges would be blocked or rendered pointless, aren’t we setting ourselves up for failure if he should find some way to narrow the margins? Are those para-militaries going to limit themselves just to enforcing his “win,” or are they going to try to fuck with in-person voting? And can’t those reactionary judges still put their thumb on the scale before November?

It’s not impossible for Trump to win, nobody should approach this election believing that. But it’s also not a given that he can cheat his way to victory no matter how stacked the odds are against him. The truth is somewhere in the middle, with plenty of reason to be optimistic if cautiously so. The more noise he makes about how any victory that does not go to him is “illegitimate,” the more “Boy Who Cried Fraud” syndrome begins to set in.

Honestly think the smartest thing the Dems could be doing right now is needling him by pointing out that early voting hasn’t even begun and he’s already making excuses for why he lost.

Our electoral system is no more secure than most democracies, vulnerable to external as well as internal interference and manipulation in any given year. But it’s something we accept because the partisan nature of elections means one party always assumes the other will rewrite the rules in their favor if given the opportunity.

I like to point out that in many countries, everyone has a registered address and mandatory ID.You are automatically put on the list when you register your address, you just show up to the polling place and they tick your name off the list.

The whole aspect of ID fraud is greatly diminished.

We’re still going to keep our son at home.

Our HS student wants to stay at home for classes, but wants to go to after school robotics sessions. I’m not sure he can have it both ways.

You Americans have this wonderful Plague Mixmaster Festival thing coming up, you call it “Thanksgiving” don’t you? Tens of millions of you fly and drive hundreds of miles to spend time with your familes, people you can’t stand to be anywhere near for the other 364 days of the year. This year there will be something else shared around the dinner table apart from the mashed potatoes and Jello crumble.

Crap. I had forgotten about Thanksgiving.

Waiting for the storm to arrive. We’re expecting coastal flooding, and we got a tornado watch at about 8 this morning. Hopefully we’ll just get a bunch of rain and some gusty winds, but you never know.

It is cloudy here, and ridiculously humid. We ran out this morning and picked up a generator in case the power goes down. Of course, if it’s anything like the snowblower we bought three years ago (and never used once), the power in our neighborhood will never go out again.

So Cal Greek Hippie  Aug 4, 2020 • 7:16:54am

When I was attending CA public school in early 1970’s we would occasionally spool the Bell and Howell movie projector with a Jimini Cricket short

He was a sanctimonious Disney insect 1%er who would proclaim wisdom through negative allusion and sing out how long he would live, which varied by the measure. Then he would say something like throwing a lit match in a pile of old newspapers is risky, kids Then he would repeat his vary in lifespan jingle that is the thing everybody remembers

I thought it was crazy to take advice from talking insects (8 year old SCGH had not heard of Kafka) but at least there was thematic avibe of don’t be a jerk in public that hopefully sunk in to some of us

Who knew this film series was the apex of US public health cooperation consciousness?

After about 15 years in my house, I broke down and ordered a snowblower from Sears right before a huge storm was supposed to hit us. It was just starting to snow as the snowblower was delivered, but then almost immediately the snow storm fizzled out. I didn’t put gas in the snowblower until 2 1/2 years later, but I’ve used it a lot since then.

We ended up selling ours to a friend. We have a gravel driveway, and there was no height adjustment on the blower end. I tried running it in the driveway one time and it was tossing rocks all over the place. We figured it best not to try it a second time.

I’ve made it a habit to click on FB accounts of folks from community and neighborhood FB pages where I live. A bit voyeuristic, but it’s a way to gauge political orientation of the community—the Qanon stuff has penetrated fairly deeply, I’m afraid, with more folks than I would have thought. The good news is that they’re still a distinct minority. There are just a lot of run-of-the-mill “drink lib tears” assholes, but I’ve suspected that about this culture-less town for a long time.

it’s bad when you become a slave to the streak.
you should be doing the activity because you want to, because you enjoy it.
this one i just sort of woke up and there it was.
then you have to keep it alive…
anyway when it happens, i’ll be sad for a day or so, then start all over again

the last time i did that was October 2019, so there’s progress.

Hubs says it might be from the nitrates in fireworks. He said it is a good indicator that this could be a fireworks explosion as reported. (Hubs is a materials engineer.)

Trump: “I read a lot. I read a lot. They like to say I don’t read. I read a lot. I comprehend extraordinarily well. Probably better than anybody that you’ve interviewed in a long time. I read a lot. I spend a lot of time with - at meetings.”

So does Trump not want to tell us who he’s spending time with or he’s forgotten who he spends time with? Either way it’s not good.

Wow. Looks like it was leveled in a military strike. How many fireworks were IN that building anyway? Sweet Jesus.

That was an almost INSTANT explosion, there had to have been a pressurized gas tank (or multiple tank) rupture, or some other highly volatile chemicals present for a blast that size.

Paulding County, GA is one county south of me. Where they have opened the schools and pics came out this morning showing they are not doing a fucking thing to keep the kids safe. On the weekends those families come to my county and shop, go the parks, etc. My county is still planning on remote learning(the possibility of some in person classes is still being batted around because a couple hundred parents are clamoring for it) but this is going to hurt the kids in the lower income parts of the county. The first day of school is supposed to be the 17th of August, we’ll see if the school board caves to the demands of parents. IOW, GA isn’t going to get any better any time soon. I’m over living here. I want out, I just have no clue where or how.

If they’re imported fireworks, they may have to be there for customs and whatnot. Most imports in most places stay relatively near the port for a while. And, I suspect in most port cities, importers tend to have warehouses near the port regardless of what they’re importing. Just makes sense logistically - until shit blows up, anyway.

After the big explosion in Tianjin a few years ago, people have to relearn about shock waves. If I see an explosion like that out of my window, I’m hitting the deck! Could also be fire in a fireworks storage that spread to an ammonium nitrate storage. But depending on how big a pile of black powder burned, that size of poof is entirely possible.

I can say for sure that someone wasn’t following safety regs.

Former king of Spain Juan Carlos has suddenly left the country. The BBC is being coy about where he’s at (bbc.com) but Agence France-Presse retweeted an article stating Juan Carlos has basically fled to the Dominican Republic. bangkokpost.com

Now why, you ask, is Juan Carlos in exile? The allegation is that Juan Carlos somehow received funds after Spanish firms won a contract to build a multi-billion dollar rail link between Mecca and Madinah in Saudi Arabia. These funds were stashed in a Swiss bank account. Juan Carlos claims to be available for investigators.

His actions the last few years have been really disappointing; he was so AWESOME in the immediate post-Franco era.

Yeah, even with nukes you will have so-and-so many killed by radiation, so-and-so many by the heatwave, and so-and-so many killed by the blast itself. And yeah, with all three, you don’t necessarily die instantly but have to suffer for quite a bit before you guaranteedly succumb to your injuries.
Any specific clip you have in mind?

He doesn’t have to be right or legal. If he creates enough doubt and confusion while controlling para-militaries and enough reactionary judges, the threat is plausible. There are probably several such avenues.

We can’t let this election be close.

But it doesn’t have to be close if there are a substantial number of mail-in ballots. What if there are millions more voting by mail-in but many ballots don’t reach their destination by election day. Don’t many states specify that unless votes arrive by then they don’t count? Through outright malice or through insufficient capacity, we could be in a situation where a landslide victory for one candidate is transformed into a defeat because the votes did not arrive on time.

We know what happened in 2000. They will work hard to reproduce that scenario. And let’s not forget the Republican election fraud in North Carolina in 2018 — they are quite capable of trying that gambit again on a larger scale.

The first thing to leave an explosion (after the fire, which is the initial plumes of smoke), is the shock wave which is gas compression (atmospheric gas compression). That’s what causes the condensation that looks like a mushroom cloud, it’s condensation). After that, things with heavier mass follow behind.

If Ian Holm was still alive a film of him trying to bring Donald around via firm discipline and restraint if necessary would probably be a winner.
