There is a special form of torture in knowing that what stands between you and a vacation is one 8 hour shift at work.

Dude and I had an argument about tRump. I think he’ll try to drop a nuke. I think he’s pushed for it already.

Dude says even if tRump makes the decision and presses the button, those in charge of launch won’t do it. I was like , I would NOT count on that.

Fighting ensued.

(I was in Italy and had watched all the other available rentals)

At one time, I would have agreed with Dude. Now, though, I am aware that Evangelical whackos have made a point of infiltrating the armed forces, especially the Air Force, for at least 25 years. With Trump’s toadies in the top civilian positions, a fundanut in a key uniformed position would be all it takes.

I now think he’s non compos mentis and cannot manage the cognitive load required to take the code card (“biscuit”) out of his coat, and read it to the man with the Football. I’ll bet the man at the White House Military Office who holds the briefcase is careful to not be too close to the President.

Was there another explicitly racist candidate splitting the “they tell it like it is” racist vote with Kobach?

I think the perception was that if Kobach won, the Democratic candidate had a very good chance of winning. Kind of like Doug Jones and Roy Moore. Good move on the part of Kansas Republican voters. Dammit.

We had one of the state representatives take some of Kobach’s tricks and implement them here, named Scott Beason (they had a kind of ALEC for racists). Some wag coined the term unbeasonable . Beason is now a “talk show radio host”, so you can imagine the sewage being spewed.

Update on the anti Doug Jones ads. A lot of money being spent, some new negative ads which make Doug Jones out to be corrupt, because as a lawyer he represented a guy. Like Hilary redux. Another from an outfit called one nation, which claims to be a 501 c4 organization, but doing campaign ads.

A number of years before his presidency, John Adams was the defense attorney for the British soldiers charged with the Boston Massacre.

Showrunner on Veep about Axios interview:

At the end of the day, this is why we ended the show. The stupidest, dumbest, craziest things we could think of to make a president and his staff say and do … I bow to my betters. We’re being outdone regularly. He’s stupider than a room full of the best comedy writers in Los Angeles can come up with, and it’s that simple…

Honestly, it’s a perfectly written comedy. It’s like they set it up. We’ve been hearing for years that this guy can’t read and can only look at big charts, and clearly he can’t even read the charts. It’s like he’s been given a chart, he’s been taught blue is the color of the United States, and off he goes.

It’s hilarious. It would be a lot funnier if it was another country.

Shit’s definitely fucked but it’s fucked in a very uncertain way, so arguing over the likelihood of specific catastrophe scenarios probably aren’t super useful. It’s possible, a lot of things are. Only thing I’m sure of is we’re gonna get more structural damage to institutions, undermining of science and observable reality. To that end, letting the anxiety Trump is deliberately creating generate new points of interpersonal friction is one way that he wins.
