Just to be clear, the guy who defeated him, Jerry Sheridan, is just as slimy as Arpaio. He was one of Arpaio’s lieutenants for decades. And he’s as racist as Arpaio.

I just checked a local TV station’’s site, and they showed mostly the same results: Sheridan ahead by 578 votes: out of 334M tabulated: though shown as “0% reporting”. So still not a sure thing.

Stories of Police Violence in Omaha 7.25.20 Pt. 1: Anonymous (Goes to Seeing Red Nebraska)

There are seven stories (each links to the next) of the two hundred or so people who were kettled on a bridge one block from the end of their non-violent protest seeking justice for James Scurlock (killed by a bar owner during the George Floyd protests), pepper sprayed, tear gassed, and taken to jail for more than twenty-four hours, where the mistreatment continued.

While Portland got lots of attention due to the nature of unmarked Feds dragging people into vans, this sort of police rioting is happening elsewhere with local police.

Next year people will be hammered as well, particularly the working poor. The Democrats have a bill in to fix this, but Mitch McConnell is sitting on it.

The problem is the Earned Income Credit, which is thought to have helped millions avoid dropping into poverty since it was created.

Unfortunately, it’s based on your earned income. If you’re laid off this year, you aren’t earning anything. That means next year’s tax filing will see millions receive a reduced payment or none at all.

That’s fine for the GOP, because they’ve been trying to reduce or eliminate it since it was created. That’s money which could be going to donors or businesses which already pay low or no taxes as bailouts.

What’s also going to cascade are foreclosures.

The housing market was already soft, and the typically over-built suburbia of the wastelands were already showing increasing numbers of distressed sales. Las Vegas is always a classic example of this - happened after 2008 when a tsunami of foreclosures.

Last night on HGTV’s long-running House Hunters, an episode aired, “From a Trailer to a House for Eight”. watch.hgtv.com

Even though it aired last night, the season it is from is 173, which would be from a couple of years ago (I think they are up to season 195 now.)

Anyway, a couple with 6 kids are buying a house in Oceanside, California. It’s the northwest corner of San Diego county and the town serves as housing for lots of military (it is next to Camp Pendleton.)

Said couple had a house previously, sold it, but wanted to be debt free, so they lived in a trailer (with all their kids) for a couple of years to save money.

They had $650k to spend (a decent down payment but not a big budget for most of the county.)

Their idea to be debt free is fine… but if this episode is from a couple of years ago then they were buying near the top of the market. For all their idealism about being debt free, buying at the peak price is not a good idea, but they couldn’t take living in their trailer anymore.

So they eventually bought a place (typical southern California crappy tract house).

Hopefully they liked their choice, as even if they have no mortgage their house value is now going to decline.

Here’s the Zillow page for Oceanside today, the middle price range page is linked (which has houses around their budget.)

And if you look at that page what do we see?

This is going to cascade, as real estate markets always do.

We are only at the beginning of this economic disaster. The AOC tweet below is poignant, yet the “slush fund” is an acknowledgment by the Republican Senate that the financial industry is going to be in trouble. While we can take it as a sign of the hard-heartedness of the GOP… it is also a sign that they know the economy is in trouble.

The remaining Trumpers (31% to 36% of the electorate depending on various polls) are beyond clueless. They are so far in denial of how bad Trump really is that I can confidently write that they are either vile people or have serious mental deficiencies. No one can look at Trump by any objective measure and come to any conclusion other than he’s the worst President the US has had (and the US has had some doozies back in the 19th century.)

My house isn’t as large as most of those, but my yard is bigger, and cost $18,000, all cash.

Houses that expensive here are usually sitting on a large ranch or farm.

Oceanside, btw, is mostly the cheaper side of coastal communities in the county. It has some very expensive property right on the beach, but outside of that is still “affordable” compared to the rest of the county.

I said yesterday that this explosion was bad, but not as bad as the 1917 Halifax Explosion. I may have spoken too soon. The Halifax Explosion was the equivalent of 2.9 kilotons and from the damage reports out there regarding yesterday’s explosion, this looks to be similar.

In the Scottsbluff listings, there is an 8,006 square foot house for $695,000.

Undoubtedly, L.K. Advani not only set the ball rolling but also introduced the new language of Hindutva pride in the early 1990s. He single-handedly dismantled the word ‘secularism’ from India’s aspirational pulpit, and gave it the adjective ‘pseudo’. In every stump speech from the rath, he spoke of the historical Hindu wound and made Babri Masjid a buzzword for hate in Indian living rooms.

But Indian family conversations should also be a big claimant for this credit. They kept chipping away at India’s founding ‘narrative template’. This is why scholars erred early on by locating the so-called ‘idea of India’ in saving the Babri Masjid. That idea wasn’t demolished at a religious site, it was taken apart brick by brick in our living rooms.

Like the Republican Party here, the BJP in India seeks to dismantle the secular state (in their case calling it “pseudo-secular”).

Yes. It was previously a museum. The AKP in Turkey under Erdogan decreed it would be a mosque.

Since Islam forbids depictions of people, the mosaics and statuary will be covered during prayers. However, it will be closed to visitors during prayer times.

Like the Ram temple in India, the Hagia Sophia will be paid for with everyone’s tax money, regardless of their religious faith or lack thereof (and in both countries, lack thereof means stay in the closet).

In India’s case, the BJP claims the new temple paid for with tax money will uplift the Dalit in Uttar Pradesh. You know, not providing useful jobs or better education or better social services … those go against conservative orthodoxy.

Hindu fundamentalism is an odd thing. Monotheistic bible thumping is what they wanted politically, but that doesn’t really match well with Hindu traditions. Thus the people who constructed Hindu fundamentalism (very recently) borrowed heavily from outside sources, such as US bible thumpers. IIRC they took some tiny subset of the Vedas (the most politically useful, of course) and made that their ‘bible’, and took one of the Hindu gods and made him (naturally) an omnipotent sky god.

I forget where I first saw it, but the idea that religious fundamentalism is primarily a backward-looking political movement with religious decorations has always rung true for me.

The cargo, ~2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate, was unloaded and stored in a warehouse at the port in 2014 - and it was that stored cargo that blew up yesterday. Initial investigations indicate years of inaction and negligence over the storage of highly explosive material in Beirut port caused the blast that killed over 100 people on Tuesday, an official source familiar with the findings said.

The prime minister and presidency said on Tuesday that 2,750 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, used in fertilisers and bombs, had been stored for six years at the port without safety measures.

“It is negligence,” the official source told Reuters, adding that the storage safety issue had been before several committees and judges and “nothing was done” to issue an order to remove or dispose of the highly combustible material.

The source said a fire had started at warehouse 9 of the port and spread to warehouse 12, where the ammonium nitrate was stored.

Also…..

Badri Daher, Director General of Lebanese Customs, told broadcaster LBCI on Wednesday that customs had sent six documents to the judiciary warning that the material posed a danger.

“We requested that it be re-exported but that did not happen. We leave it to the experts and those concerned to determine why,” Daher said.

Another source close to a port employee said a team that inspected the ammonium nitrate six months ago warned that if it was not moved it would “blow up all of Beirut”.

The housing market was already soft, and the typically over-built suburbia of the wastelands were already showing increasing numbers of distressed sales. Las Vegas is always a classic example of this - happened after 2008 when a tsunami of foreclosures.

Last night on HGTV’s long-running House Hunters, an episode aired, “From a Trailer to a House for Eight”. watch.hgtv.com

Even though it aired last night, the season it is from is 173, which would be from a couple of years ago (I think they are up to season 195 now.)

Anyway, a couple with 6 kids are buying a house in Oceanside, California. It’s the northwest corner of San Diego county and the town serves as housing for lots of military (it is next to Camp Pendleton.)

Said couple had a house previously, sold it, but wanted to be debt free, so they lived in a trailer (with all their kids) for a couple of years to save money.

They had $650k to spend (a decent down payment but not a big budget for most of the county.)

Their idea to be debt free is fine… but if this episode is from a couple of years ago then they were buying near the top of the market. For all their idealism about being debt free, buying at the peak price is not a good idea, but they couldn’t take living in their trailer anymore.

So they eventually bought a place (typical southern California crappy tract house).

Hopefully they liked their choice, as even if they have no mortgage their house value is now going to decline.

Here’s the Zillow page for Oceanside today, the middle price range page is linked (which has houses around their budget.)

We are only at the beginning of this economic disaster. The AOC tweet below is poignant, yet the “slush fund” is an acknowledgment by the Republican Senate that the financial industry is going to be in trouble. While we can take it as a sign of the hard-heartedness of the GOP… it is also a sign that they know the economy is in trouble.

The remaining Trumpers (31% to 36% of the electorate depending on various polls) are beyond clueless. They are so far in denial of how bad Trump really is that I can confidently write that they are either vile people or have serious mental deficiencies. No one can look at Trump by any objective measure and come to any conclusion other than he’s the worst President the US has had (and the US has had some doozies back in the 19th century.)

The issue is what will banks do when the moratorium on foreclosures of federally backed mortgages expires in ~2months (as well as any local foreclosure moratoriums, something many states, counties, and/or municipalities have enacted). Will they add the intervening months of non-payment to the back end of the mortgage or pursue foreclosure? I expect a lot of the former. Banks don’t want big REO inventory. 2-3 years into the bust in 2008, banks simply refused to foreclose for that reason.

The other factor is that home owners in lots of localities have a significant equity cushion in their homes, that will prevent them from going completely underwater. In the Denver metro, where I live, there has been no real “top of the market”. Most everyone has equity. Lastly, unlike in 2008 to 2013, there aren’t many, if any, people that are stuck having purchased on an interest only mortal age with an ARM that is set to adjust.

There is pain on the horizon, but as I sit here today, I doubt we see a bust like in 2008, at least not on a national scale.

Same. My MIL (who I live with) is 67 and in poor health. I’m reasonably confident she would not survive covid-19. I am working from home currently so that helps to cut down on the risk but it doesn’t eliminate it. I always sanitize or wash my hands before I bring her food and try to minimize close contact with her as much as I can.

Ultimately, if you get the virus, by the time you know you have it you’ve already spread it. You can’t help that. It’s just the way biology works. It fucking sucks that you might unknowingly give it to someone you really don’t want to get it, but until we have some kind of reliable early detection method, this is the reality.

We are only at the beginning of this economic disaster. The AOC tweet below is poignant, yet the “slush fund” is an acknowledgment by the Republican Senate that the financial industry is going to be in trouble. While we can take it as a sign of the hard-heartedness of the GOP… it is also a sign that they know the economy is in trouble.

The remaining Trumpers (31% to 36% of the electorate depending on various polls) are beyond clueless. They are so far in denial of how bad Trump really is that I can confidently write that they are either vile people or have serious mental deficiencies. No one can look at Trump by any objective measure and come to any conclusion other than he’s the worst President the US has had (and the US has had some doozies back in the 19th century.)

Vile people who are racist to the core and dismissive of the well-being of the poor. Essential workers (regardless of race) are no better than slaves — their lives don’t matter, while the investor class must be pampered and protected. Their main interest is the well-being of their stock portfolio and their personal comfort; who cares about other people?

Now — many are also thoroughly brain-washed into believing “deep state” and “Obamagate” type conspiracies. I’m not sure that means they are mentally deficient, though, because my belief is that anyone can be sucked into these bizarre worlds if they are constantly exposed to the same set of deceptions, from a range of related sources (e.g. multiple anchors at Fox, Limbaugh, etc)

Women, in general, have had problems over the years with doctors taking their comments seriously. Indeed too many physicians think of themselves as infallible.

35 years ago my sister rushed her 18 month daughter to the hospital when she broke her leg by falling the wrong way. The doctors had to put a cast on my niece — and my sister tried to explain that the cast was not being set up correctly. The doctors treated her as a hysterical woman and tried to prescribe a tranquilizer. Needless to say when my sister returned the next day with her daughter in tow, the doctors realized that the cast had to be replaced, they decided to listen to her recommendations.

Senator Ernie Chambers (I) now brings up a case brought by Nebraska and appealed to the Eighth Circuit that Nebraska agreed in the previous case that the previous attempt at this, that banning the D&E method was an undue burden on women because the state would pursue doctors for a crime. Based on Nebraska’s own testimony, the law was struck down.

Sen. Tim Geigret (sp? District 40) now rises to support the bill, saying as a grandfather he doesn’t want anyone to miss out on being a grandparent. He then raises his experience as a Medivac pilot in the military.

He then alludes to everyone being part of a life-saving mission with this bill, and if you don’t agree, he’ll pray for you.

A guy who belongs to a fan page I do and his girlfriend have become my real life buddies. Even though we’ve never met personally, we have a lot in common. Music, gardening (their veggie garden is to DIE for), same goofy sense of humor, etc. We’ve sent gifts and stuff from our gardens back and forth, and his girlfriend works in a hospital as a pharm tech, her life is stressful right now, she’s working 14 hour shifts from being understaffed, just delivering meds to patients and dealing with all that entails over a day. He’s from GA, but they live up in northeast US now. They are sweet people, been through hell and back a couple of times, and still manage kindness.

So he puts up a facebook post today about stupid assholes going on vacation into known hot spots and how he can’t process how absolutely fucked up it is, not enough facepalms in the world etc.

A mutual friend responds with she and her husband went to Panama City last week because they couldn’t take being home all the time (I know where they live, it’s 5 miles at most from here and it’s not a hellscape, yet). While they were there she talked to all these people from PC and no one knows anyone who is sick. BUT! She and her hubby know someone who almost died from COVID but he’s better now. Besides the numbers are too high, it’s not that many people dying, the government is lying, hospitals miscounting cases for money, etc. Fuck her. I was friends with her before, I will never get anywhere near her ever. Another lady and I talked over and around her about spoiled assholes being the problem here and that was that.

Between the schools starting up and our fairly close proximity to Florida, Georgia is going to get shithammered, hard. If my husband gets sick , I’m a widow, period. He won’t recover, all his doctors say so. And we’re doing everything right to the best of our ability. And still, it only takes a stupid, selfish couple from down the road a bit to take that all away, or someone like them. I’m tired of this shit. And their righteousness about it, like it is just no big deal to risk hurting others because they got bored one weekend.

How does “competing slate of electors” even work? The state may only send the number of electors equivalent to the number of electoral votes that state has.

Nebraska can’t send four Republican electors, and one each GOP and Democratic for NE-2. That’s not how any of this works.

If Texas somehow goes for Biden, they don’t get to send thirty-eight electors for Biden and thirty-eight more for Trump.

Between 1789 and 1820 Pennsylvania and Rhode Island were the only states that allowed popular vote for Presidential Electors. In 1800 The Pennsylvania legislature was split between Federalist Senate and Republican House. The Federalists forced the legislature to split Pennsylvania’s electors evenly between Adams and Jefferson. and that is the precedent corrupted courts can use to nullify popular votes for picking electors.

The danger is real.

Nebraska can’t send four Republican electors, and one each GOP and Democratic for NE-2. That’s not how any of this works.

If Texas somehow goes for Biden, they don’t get to send thirty-eight electors for Biden and thirty-eight more for Trump.

I think the way selecting Presidential Electors works is that each state (usually via the Secretary Of State or whatever official is constitutionally authorized to do so) signs off on the results of the election, and certifies that “X number of electors pledged to Candidate Z” have been properly selected, and those Electors then cast their votes for their pledged candidates at the official “meeting” of the Electoral College on (?)Dec. (14?).

SO if there is a close election in Texas, the issue would be if they certify 38 Electors for Trump, OR 38 Electors for Biden: and said issue is - in the final analysis, I believe - up to either the State Supreme Court. or (as in 2000) the SCOTUS.

And unfortunately, even though it hasn’t been an issue since 1876, the certification of electors IS subject to various degrees of fuckery. And I am sure somebody in the Trump Admin has, or shortly will, game out all of them.

These people are just dumb. First of all, this is a historically significant black church hosting a celebration of life for a famous civil rights icon. I know it annoys a lot of conservative white people, but these rituals are supposed to be loud, full of love and joy and celebration of that person’s life, achievements and what the person meant to them. It’s solemn, but not so damned solemn that there is no joy or laughter. I realize for guys like Cal, church is supposed to be as miserable as he is, but not everyone sees it like that, and thank goodness they don’t.

I know they did this to Paul Wellstone as well, but that was mostly to try and fuck with Al Franken who was seen then as a serious threat to eventually win Wellstone’s seat, which he did pretty handily. There’s a racial aspect to this objection of the Lewis ceremony, and an erasing of his life’s work too. Trying to make him into a thug with an arrest record who was sent off with honor he didn’t deserve. THAT’S what’s at the bottom of that sewage dump of thought.

Northern NJ and the NYC metro area are cleaning up from Isaias. Millions are without power and it may take days for full restoration of power. PSE&G LI lost ability to tell where outages were yesterday during and after the storm passing, delaying responses. PSE&G NJ is doing better, and JPL is awful as usual. Con Ed is dealing with a bunch of outages outside of Manhattan.

But none of this compares to the horrors in Beirut after that explosion at the port yesterday. 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate is a huge explosion and the damage absolutely cripples the city, which has seen relative calm for the last few years and was flourishing despite the civil war in neighborning Syria that threatened to spill over regularly into Lebanon.

So of course Trump decides to spew insane conspiracy theories that would inflame the issues and concerns of those in the region by saying it was a bomb. What it appears to be is a tragic accident and malfeasance due to local authorities not disposing of dangerous materials after they were dumped there by a now bankrupt shipping firm.

2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate exploding? 100+ dead and thousands injured. Nearby hospitals wrecked. It’s a horror with nearly 300,000 homeless or without power.

Nearest analogues of a nonmilitary origin: Texas City explosion in 1947 that involved 2,300 tons of ammonium nitrate that exploded after fire aboard a pair of cargo ships. Halifax explosion. Pepcon - a bleve explosion that rocked the greater Las Vegas region - rocket oxidizers invovled. Tianjin similarly wrecked the port area and killed a disproportionate number of first responders who didn’t know what was burning and didn’t realize adding water increased the volatility.

All the more reason to GOTV, work one’s ass off getting other to do the same, and try to make absolutely f——— sure that the election results are as unambiguous as possible.

As (disgracefully) probable as the Trump/GOP election-fuckery scenarios are, I think they are only going to work in situations of a VERY close election. My own feeling (well, hope, really), is that on Election night, the Biden ticket’s margins will be large enough on the first reported returns that the (D)s will have - or, more importantly, be seen to have - an EC majority before the night is out. And that the subsequent GOP/Trump wailing and whining will not have any effect on the final allocations.

Of course we KNOW that Trump’s Twitter feed on Nov. 4 is going to be a howling shitstorm of FAKE!! RIGGED!!! STOLEN!!! etc., but by that point, it’s unlikely to make much difference.

Final report on Isaias from Environment Canada.

On August 4th, Isaias moved through New York into Vermont, then crossed the border into Quebec that evening. While weakening gradually it continued to move northeastward and cross the St. Lawrence River just east of Trois-Rivières. Impacts for Canada were high rainfall amounts, winds gusting to storm force Tuesday evening. There was some possible local flash flooding, with widespread rainfall ahead of the storm in the 30 to 60 millimetre range, and locally reaching over 100 millimetres near Trois-Rivières and west to north of the Montreal area. Wind gradually dropped off during the evening and overnight, except for parts of the St. Lawrence River, where winds of near storm force persisted into the overnight period. Areas around Quebec City saw some wind damage from fallen trees and several thousand were without power Tuesday night.

The storm is weakening as it continues north, where it will merge with a low pressure system and then pass east into Labrador.

Following that is a summary of highest amounts of rain and wind.

In 1876, Florida, Louisiana and South Carolina each had 2 slates of electors; both parties said their candidate had won the state. There was a lot of violence on Election Day, and in the counting rooms, governors and sec of state and state legislatures and state election boards sent their contradictory lists of electors to DC.

Congress passed a bill to form an electoral commission that would decide, but in the end the result was a backroom deal between party bosses. There’s still no way to know who “really, fairly” received the most actual votes by voters.

He was wrongfully convicted after a confession was tortured out of him on the murder of two boys.

He was convicted in 1993. He has always maintained his innocence.

Prosecutors reopened the case saying the confession used to convict him did not seem to match the details of the crime.

I would imagine that he preplanned his funeral anyway-at least the personal parts. A civil rights icon who had miraculously lived until 80 would have had his plans. The only exceptions would have been things that only fellow members of Congress could do like the lying in state and various processions.

And it was a textbook way of showing how you could have a state funeral in the midst of a pandemic. Everybody masked, there were only soloists, no choir, and people were discouraged from large gatherings along the route. His burial was no doubt the same, except private and just family.

Here’s what I read from this: The GOP was/ is planning on ratfucking the election via electronic voting machines. It’s happened before, and it’s honestly the easiest way to do so. They know vote by mail is harder to fuck with, their own Heritage Foundation report went and found a LOT less than 1 percent over a period of years. So, they haven’t figured out how to fuck with vote by mail except to mess with the USPS and legal challenges to things like drop off ballot boxes. It still won’t work, the mail is too large an entity and people who live in places where they’ve always cast mail in ballots know what the deal is. This is them being scared and Trump trying to say that only states with Republican governors can be trusted to handle mail in ballots, trying to figure out how to invalidate blue state mail ins. This is the dumbest group of evil villains in known history, so we know that anything they accuse others of doing is precisely what they are doing.

Everyone needs to support their local post office branches right now. Buy your stamps there, show support and thanks to the employees, ship packages there, etc. Contact the unions that represent their workers, see if they can offer local advice and call your republican representatives and bitch about their lack of support for the USPS. Email and yes, send them letters too. They cannot be allowed to get away with this, they have already cut overtime hours and leaving mail undelivered on purpose, by order, not out of laziness or not caring. And if that stupid rule about the USPS having to fund their pensions 50 yrs or more in advance is still in place, that needs to be dealt with now too. Democrats need to jump on this because we all use the USPS and depend on it for a lot. Enough uproar from the public and the GOP will back down.

Well, we’ve had them before and nothing much has really happened.

The regime knows how to handle violence. They’re really, really good at thug-level responses.

The one thing that seems to move an oligarch-controlled state is threats to their money.
