Yesterday, they were forced to hand out masks as pictures of the audience went out over twitter before the press conference started 30 minutes late. Today, there doesn’t seem to be any pregame photos. So, who knows.

“Angry atheist” column in my regional paper today from the senior editor of the Scottsbluff Star-Herald.

Why am I paying for this newspaper again?

It’s the old trope of when he was a a student, he had an atheist college professor who angrily challenged his faith in class. (No atheist ever heard that before from a Christian apologist.)

This trope is as old as the Sandhills sir. You know it, I know it. Lying for Jesus is not a good look, though Martin Luther recommended the practice.

I remember as a young pastor working a college ministry, meeting a university professor who was a well-known atheist on campus. He enjoyed attacking Christians in his classes and when he found out I was a young pastor he put me in his sights. As a result, for the next three years, he and I shared an ongoing debate.

I could have gotten angry with his comments and challenges to my faith, but instead I listened. I responded and he listened.

The atheist, who was feared by so many, became a friend, and I was given an open door to share with him my beliefs. He shared his and I listened. Did I agree with him? No, but because I listened he allowed me to share.

It was in a kitchen, and the wife says “I hear that China is blaming the US for the virus” and the husband goes “It’s actually China’s fault” and suddenly this huge chart appears with all of these people on it, and he starts pointing randomly around the the chart implicating this person and that group. North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) to honour a hateful bigot and racist in the US Capitol, by asking for the statue of another hateful bigot and racist be replaced.

No worries on the cost though, a Christian organisation is footing the entire $650,000 bill … so at least the taxpayers won’t be paying to support Christian bigots displayed in the Capitol.

A Statue of Evangelist Billy Graham Will Soon Go Up in the U.S. Capitol (Friendly Atheist)

After all, he’s the guy who once told President Richard Nixon: “This stranglehold [that Jews have] has got to be broken or this country is going down the drain.”

Good job, Roy Cooper. You haven’t read our party platform I see.

The number of new cases of coronavirus are declining in Lancaster County, Nebr. as the Lincoln-Lancaster Health Board continues to defy the governor’s orders on masks.

Mask mandate appears to be making a difference in Lincoln (Omaha World-Herald)

As Omaha debates whether and how and when to set a masking order, Lincoln’s mask mandate just might be working.

In the nearly three weeks since the City of Lincoln mandated masks, Lancaster County’s average daily count of new cases over seven days has dropped from 48 immediately after the order started to 29 on Friday.

The most recent daily figures are even lower. On Friday, Lancaster County added 22 new cases.

That gets Lancaster County closer to a rate at which University of Nebraska Medical Center experts advise that schools could safely consider reopening — though still higher than recommended.

A hollow Gandalfian voice says, VOTE, you fools!  Aug 8, 2020 • 2:22:33pm

(From downstairs):

re: #344 Hecuba’s daughter

But in a sense we do. Jim Crow officially lasted for a century after the Civil War; it took the 1967 Loving vs. Virginia decision to make it illegal to ban interracial marriage. And as soon as VRA and CRA passed, Nixon adopted the Southern strategy. Yes — the entire ruling class wasn’t involved but enough were during this entire period of time. Look at Eric Garner, George Floyd, Philando Castile, Sandra Bland, Breonna Taylor, etc. Bush 43 certainly wasn’t a racist personally, but his campaign used such tactics against McCain in the 2000 South Carolina primary.

The 1968 Kerner Commission addressed some of this but was ignored, probably because Nixon won the 1968 election. We need another such report — but this time early enough in a Democratic administration so that it can adopt policies that will ultimately lead to a true reconciliation in this nation.

What does any of this have to do with Donald Trump, his White House or his Repug allies in the Congress? Are you saying they should be pardoned because of it?

If it’s not, Biden doesn’t deserve to win. I think it will be. Biden is cool and collected, He will do what Obama did to Romney, “please proceed” and when it’s his turn kick some but. Biden will prepare and trump won’t or can’t. Trumps record is only going to get worse from now until the debates. 50,000 new cases per day for the past month. 50,000.

If Biden shows up and says “I’m just going to let Trump talk” I’m going to vote for him enthusiastically. Biden doesn’t “deserve” to win. We need Biden in office, Trump out, and control of Congress.

I had to switch from ABP to UBlock Origin - ABP takes money to allow ads through and depending where you go it can get pretty thick. I don’t get Youtube ads at all in my browser, but I do when I watch on my PS4. It provides a button to skip after a few seconds, and if I go further into the interface it lets me never see a particular ad again (I flagged those fucking 5-minute PragerU ads as inappropriate, eventually I stopped getting them).

But yeah - the web is borderline unusable without adblock anymore - all the ad companies are a poison well of deferred responsibility.

It was in a kitchen, and the wife says “I hear that China is blaming the US for the virus” and the husband goes “It’s actually China’s fault” and suddenly this huge chart appears with all of these people on it, and he starts pointing randomly around the the chart implicating this person and that group. I didn’t watch more than about 15 seconds of it, but wow.

Is the “husband” that annoying punch-me-faced git with the glasses? If so, I have gotten that one several times. I don’t know what demographic they are going for, but for sure I am not part of it. I have often wished that Trump and Pence perish together so that — for however briefly — Nancy is President and, with her pen, undo ever executive order written by Trump. And, of course, fire the entire cabinet and replace them with acting Secretaries. But this always leads to the GOP being rid of Trump without their having taken any actions at all and possibly escaping any blame for their collusion in his crimes.

Medicaid Expansion Has Passed Every Time It’s Been on the Ballot
If the GOP actually cared about voters, they would support it, too.
by Nancy LeTourneau August 6, 2020, Washington Monthly

It’s never a good idea to put too much stock in issue polls. As we’ve seen time and time again, the wording of the question often determines the outcome. But when it comes to health care—and especially Medicaid expansion—we don’t need polls, because even voters in red states are making it clear that they are not aligned with Republicans.

On Tuesday, Missouri became the seventh state to expand Medicaid since Donald Trump was inaugurated. All but one of those states (Virginia) did so by referendum at the ballot box.

Ok, come on. This can’t be true:

“His grandson Benjamin Harrison, who became president in 1889, was born in the nearby family home in 1833.”

We had another Harrison as president? I’m a historian who sucks at history (though US history is not my thing, obviously).

re: #160 Hecuba’s daughter

He drops dead today — and then what? The GOP will claim that all the malfeasance was on his head and the American public with the attention span of a gnat will pay close attention to whomever gets the GOP nomination — it will be someone (not Pence) who is significantly younger, more energetic, and more knowledgeable than Trump. It would be the perfect scenario for them — he’s gone and they can now claim total innocence.

No they can’t. In this case all Democrats have to do is ask if they agree on trump on any of the issues. If they agree they look bad and if they disagree they lose their base. trump didn’t invent all hate, he just weaponized it.

Yep. Ol’ Ben was #23 - in between Grover Cleveland’s two terms: he had been a Senator from Indiana: ran against the incumbent Cleveland in 1888 (and won: one of the few (for the time) EC winner, popular-vote losers), then again in 1892 (he lost).

Anti-Netanyahu/corruption protests in Israel, approx. 50,000 participants.
Too close for my tastes (they were keeping distance properly at first), but at least every one was wearing masks (they take it quite seriously in the country and there’s a law mandating it with nasty fines)

That said I doubt Trump could do it if only because I doubt he ever really took it up. Cycling fosters a sense of freedom and a desire to explore the world from a vantage point that seems inimical to the entire way he was raised.

Plus, there’s never been a hairspray strong enough. (this is also why we’ve never seen any pictures of him on horseback, or riding in a convertible.)
