It’s always the Democrats’ fault. Always, somehow. Even when they write and fucking pass a bill that would at least start to address the problems this country faces for the foreseeable future. Why is no one asking Mitch McConnell on my fucking TV about why that bill the House passed then died in the Senate? And the press could find out what was in it, it’s not top secret FFS. This is outright treasonous shit here. People are dying and losing their homes, businesses and livelihoods and they are worried people taking an extra 400 a week in UEI are going to become lazy and refuse to work. They don’t even know how the system they are voting to fund actually works. They sure as fuck don’t understand the economics of surviving this level of shitstorm.

I’m pissed off about this shit. Enough. Every single person enabling this madness needs to go down with the ship. This country has a lot of housework to do or we aren’t going to make it.

People wonder how 40% of the country can continue to support Trump, and then you look at the headlines from major news outlets that portray Trump at best as one side of a dysfunctional government and at worst as valiantly fighting against the dysfunction.

This controversy over WAP is funny to me. Seventeen years ago 50 Cent and Lil Kim released a song called “Magic Stick” in which the song title was clearly a euphemism for a penis. It also includes the lyric: “I got the magic clit” along with other sexually explicit references.

But I don’t seem to recall anyone losing their shit about that one.

I’m old enough to remember the brouhaha over Prince’s “Darling Nikki”, the opening stanza of which goes like this….

I knew a girl named Nikki
I guess you could say she was a sex fiend
I met her in a hotel lobby
Masturbating with a magazine
She said, “How’d you like to waste some time?”
And I could not resist when I saw little Nikki grind

Oh there will be more. And how many kids won’t get tested? These schools are not tiny. 2500 at least at just this school, which was built awhile back to ease overcrowding in the county high school not far from there. That’s the number of registered students, not including all the people that make a school go. It’s not some backwoods high school that serves a rural area, not today. Maybe 30 yrs ago that area was much less populated with some farms here and there, not anymore. I personally do not see how it’s possible to do what Paulding county has done and not become a fucking disease vector. It’s literally doing every single thing wrong and putting lives at risk. What’s alarming to me is how many people who are supposed to give a shit about the kids dropped the ball here. This goes to the governor’s mansion and the White House too.

Long and short of the Sunday shows today was nodding along as WH hacks blathered that the EOs were in response to Dems not knuckling under, and then turning to Pelosi to ask her why she won’t just knuckle under and accept whatever crumbs the WH is willing to offer.

My current ‘meta-diatribe”:

When I saw the grubhub anti-masker video of last thread, the first thing that came to mind was Eric Hoffer’s “The True Believer”.

Points from the wiki, with my observations added.

1. “Hoffer states that mass movements begin with a widespread “desire for change” from discontented people who place their locus of control outside their power and who also have no confidence in existing culture or traditions.”

- That is, they don’t understand what is happening and do not know what to do about it.

2. “Feeling their lives are “irredeemably spoiled” and believing there is no hope for advancement or satisfaction as an individual, true believers seek “self-renunciation”.”

That is, they realize that they have lost under the current rules of society. Consider the large number of middle age folks in this movement.

3. “The “New Poor” are the most likely source of converts for mass movements, for they recall their former wealth with resentment and blame others for their current misfortune.”

- They feel that they used to be winners but are no longer winners. I suspect that the white power element is due to blaming other, formally marginalized groups for that.

4. “Every important part of the true believer’s persona and life must ultimately come from their identification with the larger community; even when alone, the true believer must never feel isolated and unwatched.”

- This is why they act out individually. And an attractive part of the Q movement.

5. “While mass movements idealize the past and glorify the future, the present world is denigrated”

- MAGA and a reason why KAG is not getting as much traction.

6. “All mass movements are competitive” and perceive the supply of converts as zero-sum; and “all mass movements are interchangeable”. “Another example occurred in Germany during the 1920s and the 1930s, when Communists and Fascists were ostensibly bitter enemies but in fact competed for the same type of angry, marginalized people.”

- That is why some Berners sound a lot like MAGAts.

ETA - Of course some of the Berners sound like MAGAts because they come from the same Russian Troll Farm.

I’m not surprised at the latest moral panic over Cardi B.

I still recall the uproar over Iron Maiden’s song “The Number of the Beast”. Record burnings, denunciations from pulpits from sea to shining sea, Christian fundies in particular worked up into a righteous frenzy.

The lyrics of the song are loosely based on the classic 1791 poem “Tam O’Shanter” by Robert Burns. It’s got nothing to do with devil worship - and more to do with Steve Harris’ appreciation of British poetry and literature.

Why Trump doesn’t deserve a Biden debate
Stop normalizing him, by Eric Boehlert

I agree!

Just because Trump is the Republican Party’s nominee for president, doesn’t mean he deserves to debate his Democratic opponent on national television.

For now, Joe Biden has committed to participating in the three scheduled presidential debates. I wish he would take a different path and tell Trump that if he doesn’t release his tax returns there will be no two-man debates. Trump’s ongoing refusal to be transparent about his financial past ought to forfeit him the right to participate in the nationally televised forums. And Biden would be on solid ground making that stand.

More importantly, debates are the wrong platform to give to a pathological liar like Trump. We’ve seen this dishonest act before and there’s no reason to repeat it. There’s no upside to normalizing his behavior with a presidential debate and the legitimacy it provides. Just so Trump can lie again, for example, about Hydroxychloroquine and make up claims about how Europe is being ravaged by the Covid-19 pandemic while America has recovered.

49
retired cynic  Aug 9, 2020 • 11:57:29am

Another good Boehlert piece:

Don’t blame “Congress” for GOP ending $600 unemployment benefit
Stop the Both Sides nonsense

The truth is, today’s Republican Party cannot govern. More specifically, the Republican Party does not want to govern and doesn’t see the federal government as an instrument to help working Americans, even during a national health crisis when millions of families approach the economic abyss. The press doesn’t want to highlight that fact, though. Instead, the coverage hides behind a phony Both Sides shield and let’s the GOP off the hook.

Used it, no, but on nearly every cooking show I’ve seen, a pro has used it. Best endorsement I can think of.

Grandma had a manual pasta maker It looked a lot like the one in this Amazon link!

It also had a die to make ravioli with. Grandma like chicken ravioli which she would serve with melted butter and fresh grated Romano cheese on top.

Abusive people rarely think of themselves as abusers. No matter how badly they hurt the targets of their abuse, they always lie to themselves about how it was “necessary” or how they “brought it upon themselves.” The ones that do tend to be psychopaths who either feel nothing or draw pleasure from inflicting abuse.

This really shows you that we’re dealing not simply with amoral assholes, but ignorant ones as well. Plagues burn themselves out when they either kill all the population susceptible to infection or they kill so fast that they can’t continue to spread. You know how you speed up the end of a plague? You isolate people so that those who are infectious cannot spread it to others before the virus runs its course and either kills them or their body fights off the infection. Jamming infectious people together does not stop a plague, it’s dials up the body count!

That’s really my point: There’s nothing that can be done other than saying “this is how it’s supposed to work.” The big issue is that “Congress” is not the problem, Republicans are. Any call for action that targets “Congress” just furthers the perception that this is a problem that both sides are ignoring.

That’s because they’re doing this on sufferance, just as they did with CV-19. They spent weeks ignoring the issue, then weeks more insisting it would fix itself, and now are stuck actually trying to address it. But because they really don’t want to do it, they’re just throwing shit at the wall in the hope that something will stick. With CV-19 it was the “travel ban” that was too late and leaked like a sieve, here it’s EOs that don’t do jack squat but give the WH time to try to pressure Pelosi into knuckling under to their demands.

Thanks to the GOP Senate and its total submission to Trump, we are now in effect a Potemkin dictatorship with the dictator claiming whatever he wants with no restriction on his assertions and anyone who actually wants to solve the crises facing this nation sidelined with no way to accomplish anything. Too many in the submissive press fail to confront his daily lies and those that try are often insulted and ignored.

Lawrence is on point. One thing to add: It also comes from generations of being told that someone else is to blame for YOUR problems.

Whether that’s blacks, women, atheists, Jews, non-white Immigrants or the Chinese the game is the same: You are failing not because you are not taking responsibility for yourself but because one or more of these “others” are taking what’s rightfully yours. How many times have we heard variations on “I’m not the problem, those damn (insert minority group here) are the problem!” ?

It’s just easier to blame someone else for your problems and find no fault with yourself than to say “Yeah, I screwed things up and now I have to deal with the consequences.”

So Conservative pundits have weaponized this and fed right wingers a steady diet of “others” to blame their problems on, making things that much more aggravating for the rest of us who are trying hard to build a stronger society and foster understanding and dialogue between radically different groups.

I think this also happens because in most situations people tend to be more sympathetic to victim of a situation rather than the instigator. This is why so many right wingers use the DARVO tactic. They want to be seen as the exploited despite everything they say and do making it clear they are the exploiters.

For the crazies, to be wrong is not simply about one’s worldview, it’s about the justification for everything you do. To be wrong means your motivation for everything you do is not only wrong, but it’s immoral and possibly even criminal. And since you refuse to believe yourself immoral of criminal, you reject reality and bury yourself deeper in that worldview. It’s not you that’s wrong, it’s the world and everybody that disagrees with you. But you’ll be vindicated once people realize you were right all along.

In some cities, rent control regulations treat vacancies/new tenants very differently than remaining tenants. In the long run, 6 months of vacancies may offer a long-term financial benefit. Especially if during the vacancies you bring in construction crews to upgrade kitchens and bathrooms, or reconfigure 6 3-bedroom apartments into 10 2-bedroom or 25 studios.

Not all landlords really have a choice. The only person I know in my life that is a landlord is my grandmother. She owns a little three unit tenement, lives on the first floor and counts on the rent from the the other two units to supplement her SS. She doesn’t have a 401K or a pension, she relies on that extra income, I have no idea how long she could go without that before she was forced to at least try to find new tenants.

According to the LA Tenants Union, the Trump Tax Scam allows apartment owners to write off vacancies in the properties they own. In other words it incentivizes landlords to leave apartments vacant.

Repubs: *crickets*

Dems: “Guys?”

Repubs: “Hey, there’s all this money we haven’t finished pilfe…er, loaning out yet. Come back in June.”

*June*

Dems: “Alright, so we’re working on a deadline, what have you got?”

Repubs: “Wow, where’s the fire? There’s still some money left around. Come back in July.”

Dems: “We really can’t afford to drag these talks out into the fall. We need to start talks now.”

Repubs: “Sorry, can’t hear you, come back later.”

*Early July*

Dems: “Alright guys, we’ve got less than a month before the deadline hits, let’s get these talks rolling.”

Repubs: “Look, we’re gonna level with you, we don’t think there’s a need for a new bill. We think the economy is recovering nicely and everything will work itself out. So buzz off.”

Dems: “There’s tens of millions still unemployed! Most can’t make their rental or mortgage payments! Millions are going hungry! We need to do more!”

Repubs: “We got more important things to consider, like how all this spending looks to our base. If we pass another huge bill, they’re gonna start to grumble that we’re giving you guys too much. Now FUCK OFF!”

*Late July*

Dems: “Republicans are going to allow millions to become homeless or starve! They don’t care about anybody but their wealthy donors!”

Repubs: “HEY! Pipe down and sign onto this bill.”

Dems: “But this bill isn’t even 1/3 of what we proposed. It doesn’t continue any of the things we proposed. AND WHAT’S ALL THIS DEFENSE SPENDING FOR?!”

Repubs: “Hey now, we told you our base doesn’t want a huge bill. You’re lucky we’re giving you anything. Half our caucus won’t even vote for this bill. NOW SIGN!”

Dems: “No, we’ve wasted months on your bullshit, now you’re either going to negotiate in good faith or bear the blame for this shitshow in the elections.”

WH: “Hey now, no need for that. We’ll negotiate with you…provided you’ll just agree to sign the Senate Repub bill as-is.”

Dems: “We’re willing to consider some of the bill, but we’re not budging on the important issues like the extension of the UEI benefits.”

WH: “Not happening, sign on the line.”

Dems: “No.”

WH: “Alright, we’ll give you $200/wk, but only for a couple months while we saddle the states with figuring out how to pay even less.”

Dems: “No.”

WH: “Fine, $400/wk is our offer, but that’s all we’re willing to give you.”

Dems: “No.”

WH: “WHY WON’T YOU COMPROMISE?! You know what, forget it, we’re just passing a bunch of EOs and blaming you for everything. Good luck winning now!”

Mom and Dad’s record collection consisted on Broadway Musicals, Gilbert & Sullivan and Opera. They would not allow “jungle music” to be played in the house.

I bought a copy of Frank Zappa’s Freak Out and had to hide it in my bedroom. I only played it when they weren’t in the house and there were a couple of close calls when they almost caught me…

I would not be surprised if that pissed people off enough to increase turnout, not decrease it. Seems to have worked that way in Wisconsin.

(As to his proposed actions, someone remind him that the states administer elections, not the federal government. Trying to screw up the postal service is their best and only shot.)

You really think Voter Suppression states like Texas, Georgia, or Florida would do anything to count votes that came from Democratic sections of the state? Please, they would fully support this Trump initiative.

Right. That’s why we lost so badly at the midterms.

The midterms were in the “before times”. The post office is not run by the local community; it’s run by the federal government. What can the local community do if the ballots don’t arrive on a timely basis due to deliberate sabotage by the criminals now running this agency? Maybe I just know too many people(both Christians and Jews) who are devoted to Trump’s vision of the world; and the thought of a repeat of 2016 terrifies me.

re: #228 mmmirele

Weird. I retweeted some excitable boy’s Tweet about how Roger Stone was going to tell everyone how he got saved at Greg Locke’s church. Locke is known for dumping his wife for his admin assistant, going nuts about donuts and basically being an ass during COVID-19 and the person I shared this with had written a post about Locke’s crazy on her blog last week.

Someone responded to my tweet, but I discovered @RealADWhitman had blocked me.

[Embedded content]

I don’t get it…and I don’t know why someone would block me just for that. Oh well.

I know why! Because they’re crooks.

I’m not surprised that Roger Stone decided to do the Charles Colson thing and hide behind Jay-Zuss while he continued to lie for his real God Ayn Rand!

re: #279 Hecuba’s daughter

Please don’t. Due to Paxton and the Republicans, localities can’t extend by mail voting to people who are worried about getting sick, which means that here in Texas voting and regulations are the same as they were in 2018. Part of the problem the GOP is having here is they have driven white suburban men and women to Democrats, especially women. But, being in the suburbs, where a lot of their base is, they can’t tell them apart by looking at them. So all of the votes will get counted.
