So, how much would you pay for 50 feet of beach-front property along LaJolla Shores?

How about $27M?

zillow.com

It’s one of those insanely priced new-builds on a tiny city lot.

You and I may be struggling in Trump’s America, but the wildly rich are doing fine.

1995 is only 25 years ago, but so many of these TV shows I don’t remember. OTOH, I didn’t have a TV during most of that decade so I never watched TV and thus probably never saw them to begin with. The new networks (UPN and WB) look like they tried initially before they devolved into nothingness:

German TV in the 90’s was abysmal; only the worst, most common-denominator US shows made it (and then dubbed) so I all but stopped watching TV.

One highlight was seeing The Producers on German TV (with the songs all in the original)

It was am amazing show for the time. Looked down on by many today but I saw an independent minority woman for the first time there - even before Nyota Uhura because I didn’t know Star Trek at that time - so this was probably the first time I saw a black woman on the TV in our Midwestern Flyover land. What a show…

I liked McMillan and Columbo but I learned very soon that I had to wait till 15 minutes into the show before I started watching a Columbo episode. I loved watching him figure it out but ONLY if I didn’t know it to start. It was usually easy to figure out but I just couldn’t watch that first bit that showed the solution.

McMillan and Wife was much better than a lot want to give it credit for now a days.

But Jim Rockford remains the “PI” in my mind, even above the classics of noir.

Columbo was - and still is - popular with Czech audiences and has a strong following here. The Rockford Files is pretty much unknown here, but several of my students, past and present, have come to appreciate it greatly. I have the entire series in my collection, and I’ll lend it out and let them discover the magic.

Those who’ve seen it regard it as an almost perfectly well-written blend of humor and action, with the late James Garner as a fantastic actor. For many of them, it’s also something of a time capsule, a peek into 1970s America, when Czech Republic was still sealed off behind the Iron Curtain. One of the greatest prime-time US television series ever.

Agreed on every point. Jim, with his typewriter made “Biz Cards” to fit every need was a perfect encapsulation of every good thing in the image of America then. Freedom without the stupidity of the FreeDUMB sector of today.

I’m reminded, suddenly, of the last episode of the original Hawaii-5-0. The ultimate recurring bad guy, Wo Fat, is finally jailed. As the camera looks in at him in his cell, he smiles, pulls out a tiny file and you know he’ll be back out causing trouble again. Near perfect TV storytelling.

That was interesting. I didn’t watch much TV back then either but only two shows struck me as hits (JAG and Drew Carey and i think Moesha), and I’d heard of Pinky and the Brain. Of those, I’ve seen one episode of JAG (recently) and that’s it.

The majority of stars I’ve also never heard of but there were a couple of (now) big names (I didn’t know Stanley Tucci had done TV), and a couple of stars whose names popped up a couple of times.

The very first one, Nowhere Man, looked interesting and immediately reminded me of La Femme Nikita (another show I’ve recently learned about and watched, the original, not the one with Maggie Q), and sure enough, it was by Joel Surnow who did the original LFN. I might have watched that one, back in the day. The rest, not so much.

Auckland goes back to level 3 lockdown for 72 hours while the source is identified. Essential services only to open (supermarkets, pharmacies, has stations), schools open only for children of essential workers, no travel in or out of Auckland unless you are going home or coming home.

Rest of the country into level 2 lockdown for the same period. Gatherings restricted, masks and distancing return.

Friday afternoon or evening we should learn the next move.

Tsikhanouskaya was in government custody yesterday, now in Lithuania with her kids. The government made her do a hostage video as a condition of release, saying that she accepts the official complete bullshit results of the election. This seems to have convinced absolutely nobody in Belarus, and general strikes are now on. Lukashenko is also noticeably ill with COVID, so that too.

A school board when run by Republicans, Union Public School District in Tulsa.

Parents Calling For Union BOE Member To Step Down (News on 6)

Since this E-mail, the Union School Board has voted to return to in-person schooling.

TULSA, Okla. - Some Union Public Schools parents are calling for board of education member Jeff Bennett to step down after he sent a controversial email to a parent in response to concerns about school starting this month.

The press is still failing. Alternatives for the word “controversial” up there: Racist. Illegible. Full of spelling and grammar errors.

This is a school board on conservatism.

“If you’ve seen the email, it is perplexing,” UPS parent Michelle Palmer said. “It’s just surprising.”

Michelle Palmer and her husband, Adam Palmer, have three children that attend Union Public Schools. All they wanted to do was voice their concerns to the board before Monday’s meeting at the Union Education Service Center.

The Palmers now have more concerns about their children’s safety.

You should have concerns: about their safety, about their education, &c.

The article contains the parents’ original contact E-mail requesting an extension of distance learning for six more weeks, followed by the board member’s racist, anti-science, barely-intelligible response. The board member confirmed he wrote the E-mail.

Jesus f’in Christ. This letter…

Hello Adam;

Thanks for your opinion.

I’m not convinced anyone, certainly not the experts, most defiantly not me know much about covid. We shut down schools because it is what we had to do in order to defeat the deadly Chinese virus, just 21 days if we shut everything down, more than 2 months later states started to reopen. Then the 2nd wave and cases with numbers never seen before, well actually the group (20 to 50 year olds) that were not aloud in hospitals and clinics because they were not at risk were not being tested well now they are. Tests were not available then Kodak gets resurrected with a $500 million contract to provide chemicals to make tests now we are testing at a rate of nearly a million a day, nation wide. Reporting is faulty as many states are/were counting a positive covid test the same as a positive antibody test, which are the opposite. One sais you have it one sais you have antibodies which help your body fight it off. The press want you to be in tune with the number of cases as bad news sells and those numbers are going up but death rate is going down.

I certainly appreciate the trust you place in myself and the board but there is no right decision, certainly not for everyone…

In the wake of the blast in Beirut, countries around the world are investigating places where companies may have illegally squirrelled away ammonium nitrate.

It’s been found in an airport air cargo area in Baghdad, in warehouses in India seized by customs for improper documents and sold off to unknown individuals, in Australia 3km from a city centre, and in several cities in the United Kingdom.

Coronavirus: Putin says vaccine has been approved for use (BBC)

Phalanx hits the Russian market.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said a locally developed vaccine for Covid-19 has been given regulatory approval after less than two months of testing on humans.

Mr Putin said the vaccine had passed all the required checks, adding that his daughter had already been given it.

Officials have said they have plans to start a mass vaccination in October.

Experts have raised concerns about the speed of Russia’s work, suggesting that researchers might be cutting corners.

Amid fears that safety could have been compromised, the World Health Organization (WHO) urged Russia last week to follow international guidelines for producing a vaccine against Covid-19.

The Russian vaccine is not among the WHO’s list of six vaccines that have reached phase three clinical trials, which involve more widespread testing in humans.

There is a history: (from a year ago)

The Victoria’s Secret billionaire Leslie Wexner says the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein “misappropriated vast sums of money” from Wexner’s fortune while serving as his financial adviser.

In a letter to members of his namesake Wexner Foundation, seen by The Wall Street Journal, the CEO and founder of L Brands, the parent company to Victoria’s Secret, said that Epstein had “misappropriated vast sums of money from me and my family.”

“This was, frankly, a tremendous shock, even though it clearly pales in comparison to the unthinkable allegations against him now,” Wexner continued in the letter.
Epstein was arrested last month and charged with sex trafficking and conspiracy to commit sex trafficking over allegations involving girls as young as 14. He has pleaded not guilty. If convicted, he faces up to 45 years in prison.

It is unclear how much money is believed to have been mismanaged. According to The Journal, tax records indicate that Epstein made a $46 million contribution to a Wexner charitable fund in January 2008. In his letter, Wexner said this amount represented a “portion” of the sum he says Epstein mishandled, according to CNBC.

He added that “every dollar” of that money originally belonged to the Wexner family. A representative for Wexner did not comment to The Journal on whether the “misappropriation” was reported to authorities.

Some positive news via electoral-vote.com

Georgetown University hired two pollsters to survey the political landscape together. One is Celinda Lake, a widely respected Democratic pollster. The other is Ed Goeas, a widely respected Republican pollster. By teaming up two pros from opposite ends of the spectrum, they got a poll that is probably as honest as one can get.

The poll found Joe Biden ahead of Donald Trump 53% to 40% among all likely voters, with only 7% undecided. Even if all the undecideds went for Trump, he would still lose badly. One subgroup is especially important. In the last poll (in Oct. 2019), white middle-class voters preferred Trump to a generic Democrat by 9 points. Now Biden leads Trump by 8 points. That’s a 17-point swing away from Trump by a key demographic

Heres another observation of theirs:

In other words, in the red districts, the Republicans can tell any lie they want and it could work because the voters don’t have any real understanding of politics, economics, and the world outside their little towns (except what Fox News and OANN tell them). In contrast, suburban voters get their information from multiple sources and have a much better view of what the world is really like. Telling them outright lies will only anger them big-time

Remember watching that. PBS was the only broadcast channel on which one could see boobs.

Then again, we only had NBC, PBS, ABC and CBS, and the latter two channels sometimes had poor reception. We had a local NBC station, and the university PBS station had a repeater in our town.

Oh I go all the way back when Pittsburgh only has 2 TV Stations—WQED which was the public station showing instructional TV to schools and WDTV which was the linchpin of the DuMont Network…

One thing I’ve noticed, and it’s anecdotal, is that the Russians daily new infections rate always seem to be close to, but invariably under, 6,000 per day. Almost like someone gave instructions along the line of, “No matter what you do, make damned sure it’s under 6,000 a day” or something.

Consider this situation with any vaccine sped through and approved without proof and adequate testing and the government says take it, it’s safe:

- it flat out just fails as a vaccine…doesn’t work
- serious side effects not immediately apparent ie thalidomide
- outright kills a lot of people

Then another drug comes out, better tested and controlled

You think there’s antivaxxers now? What happens when they have justification?

Not one that is legal.

Conspiracy to cover up felony conduct.

Their argument would be that Flynn was coerced into a plea deal that was accepted by him and the DOJ where all players were Trump’s own people. And yet once Barr comes in, everything is suspect. The issue isn’t Flynn or the plea deal. It’s Barr subverting the rule of law to protect Trump by any means necessary.

Yeah, that’s a real concern too. After all, these are young men, athletes, in prime physical condition - and COVID-19 is causing myocarditis in them, WTF is gonna happen to people who can’t even be remotely described as young athletes in prime physical condition?

Meanwhile, VP Biblethumper is Tweeting that college sports are, somehow, absolutely vital to the survival of the American Republic or some such twaddle.

I can tell you what happens…one of my friends had coronavirus early on (her carrier was a nurse who picked it up in Hong Kong and brought it to California). She had serious gut issues but it wasn’t until later that these were recognized as symptoms of COVID-19.

So here we are in August, almost six months since she got sick and she has tachycardia, BAD. Her heart starts racing when she stands up from a seated position. She’s been in for initial scans but the cardiologists can’t tell if it’s pericarditis or myocarditis. So more testing is called for. And of course there are the insurance issues, which are not helping. But yeah, heart trouble.

There’s almost certainly going to be long-term health issues related to this. And I don’t just mean over the next 18 to 24 months. We could be looking at COVID-19 related health problems many years, maybe even decades, down the road - and that’s something we need to be ready for.

DOL’s chief solicitor, Trump appointee Kate O’Scannlain, informed Herold of the involuntary transfer late last month. Earlier this year, Herold wrote a memo to DOL leadership to complain that Scalia, in her view, was intervening in DOL’s high-profile pay-bias lawsuit against Oracle by attempting to reach a low-ball settlement, the sources said. She’s also clashed with political leadership at DOL headquarters over the last three years, current and former administration officials told Bloomberg Law.

The transfer has yet to be finalized. Herold, who has hired civil rights lawyer Debra Katz, plans to file a complaint with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel alleging retaliation against a whistleblower if the department follows its verbal order with a formal notice of involuntary reassignment, the sources said.

Naturally: Bret Stephens mentions it in his hatchet-job column on Rice in today’s NYT. Along with a lot of other carping. There’s a nugget of truth under the mountain of bullshit, though - US policy in sub-Saharan Africa has been, at best, uneven and rarely “productive”: but it’s been that way for decades (under various Administrations), and blaming Susan Rice for the shortcomings is a huge crock. Though Bret Stephens….

Mind you, I don’t think Rice is a good pick for VP. But not on Benghazi Boogaloo grounds….

while Rice has the chops to be National Security Advisor or even Head of the State Department, not holding or running for any national or locally elected position doesn’t make her a wise choice (imho, she’s capable and smart, not denying that) for a great deal of the domestic heavy lifting and repair that is needed to our governmental institutions. I think Harris covers that as she’s well versed in the law and will make fucking mincemeat of those who do not do their homework. She’s not a radical lefty but I believe she’s more from Biden’s cloth of believing in good government and who will help rebuild what was broken. I’m pro-agressive but orderly development and I won’t allow any of that stuff Trump buys from Putin near me or my family.

Trump needs to make a splash dealing with coronavirus before the election — and what could be more of a splash than saying his BFF has a vaccine for the disease. I am certain that Putin told Trump that is the best way to ensure re-election and its safety or efficacy or whether it’s only a placebo is immaterial; voters just have to be told that it’s available and the pandemic is over! They could start the vaccinations immediately and a grateful nation will applaud dear leader! The story only has to hold up through November 3, after that it doesn’t matter to Trump. The millions who continue to believe in hydroxycholoquine will have no problem in accepting this latest lie from Trump.

I liken it to what Obama and Pelosi did in 2008 in their massive unfucking of the US (and tbf, the World) economy by hitting the ground running. Pelosi steered a whole shitpotful of legislation in 2008 to fix the economy, lily ledbetter, voting reform, the ACA etc….(only to have Mitch play the obstruction game really well in delaying a whole lotta shit from hitting the streets as fast as it could have, thank to the delay in seating Franken and making guys like Byrd and Kennedy show up in their death beds to get shit passed while his open caucus openly prayed for their deaths).

I suspect Biden has a serious amount of repair work to perform, from the medical, to the economic, to the post office, to the environment and international relations, justice department, repopulating the government with civil service and also going after the GOP wrecking crew and maybe even killing Putin.

“…Apart from the Ruptly videographer, only one other journalist — a local television reporter — heard about the Bible burning, and noted it with a single sentence buried in a lengthy report on that night’s protests. The story, by KOIN, the local CBS News affiliate, also reported that a group of women calling themselves Moms United for Black Lives Matter attempted to put out the fire — a detail not included in the Ruptly video, which was edited to string together a number of clips from the night. (A New York Times reporter had observed a truck offering free Bibles at the protests earlier that night, though it was not clear whether it provided the book that was burned.)

Ruptly instead made the Bible burning a focus of its protest coverage that night. The news agency tweeted the video twice on Aug. 1 — here and here — and featured it on its website. In the tweets and text that accompany the video on the agency’s website, the Bible burning is presented as the night’s central event; the flag burning is secondary. RT, the network that runs Ruptly, also wrote an entire story about the Bible burning. Ruptly and RT then let Twitter take it from there.

The video was first tweeted by an account that lists two cities — Oklahoma City and Abu Dhabi — as its users’ location and has only a few dozen followers. It was soon after deleted. But before it disappeared, the tweet was picked up by a Malaysian named Ian Miles Cheong who has amassed a large Twitter following by playing a right-wing American raconteur on social media.

Mr. Cheong added his own commentary to the initial tweet, wildly exaggerating what the Ruptly video showed. “Left-wing activists bring a stack of Bibles to burn in front of the federal courthouse in Portland,” he wrote.

His tweet quickly became the basis for an entire day of outrage from right-wing news outlets, Republican political figures and alt-right commentators. It was Mr. Cheong whose tweet spurred the younger Mr. Trump, Mr. Cruz and numerous other high-profile Republicans to weigh in. It was also held up as evidence of the protesters’ depravity by prominent alt-right conspiracy theorists like Jack Posobiec, a correspondent for the One America News Network, which is much favored by the president.”
