FT & FP.

I encountered this 2014 NR gem about Alinsky and Hillary on the internet. I wonder if more leftists were aware of this, would Hillary be President today? Probably not, since the comparison is to Warren. Though given how Warren and Clinton are the same generation, it is amusing to see Clinton described as the Warren of her day.

Inside TrumpWorld’s Anti-Kamala Attack Plan

Some good jabs, by Gabriel Sherman, Vanity Fair.

Donald Trump didn’t expect Joe Biden to pick Kamala Harris as his running mate. “He thought Biden would choose Karen Bass,” a Republican briefed on Trump’s thinking said. Trump’s view, according to sources close to the White House, was that Biden would prefer a candidate with Bass’s low national profile and one who wouldn’t outshine him. Trump was also hopeful that Bass, a California congresswoman, would join the ticket given her record of making positive comments about the late Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. “Trump thought Bass would help him with the Cubans in Florida,” the source said.

They are thinking with Trump’s brain (sic) and thinking that Kamala will overshadow Joe and he won’t like that. LOL

Also:

As Trump blasts Biden’s age and absence from the trail, Trump campaign staffers are privately frustrated that the president is refusing to get out there himself. Since his disastrous and sparsely attended Tulsa rally in June, Trump has largely cocooned himself inside the White House, leaving only for a few public events and visits to his private clubs. “Trump has told the campaign he only wants to do one or two events a week. They keep putting ideas in front of him, and he is telling them ‘no,’” a Republican close to the campaign told me. One Republican close to the West Wing speculated that Trump doesn’t like doing small events like factory visits because they promote other people’s companies. “He thinks, Why should I do that?” the Republican said.

Biden is fine with sharing the glory. He literally had tee shirts that had the names of his opponents and “me” defeat Trump. Trump’s mistake is continuing to think Biden is like him. Yeah they’re both old white guys but one lives in reality. The other is talking about women voters in 1950’s jargon. Biden’s been underestimated from the start and will continue to be so which is exactly why I think he’s going to pleasantly surprise a lot of people as potus.

See, Trump certainly wouldn’t want to have to worry about being “outshined” which is why he picked Pence, who has all the charisma of a glass of water that’s been sitting all day on the counter. Naturally, Trump assumes Biden would act in the same fashion.

The qualities that hampered Harris’s campaign could be the ones that make her an ideal running mate Karen Tumulty, WaPo

She had from the beginning been considered the front-runner on the list of a dozen or more qualified women said to be on Biden’s shortlist. (I should disclose here that my adult son works for the Biden campaign.)

There is an echo here of Biden’s own selection in 2008 to share the ticket with Barack Obama. Biden, too, was a onetime adversary who proved more effective as a wingman.

At Beirut’s shattered port, a crater nearly 50 yards deep and small signs of previous lives, WaPo.

This is an article that just details the damage, with photos and a video. I was wondering why there weren’t thousands of deaths:

“If this had happened a few hours earlier, we would have around 5,000 deaths,” said a civil defense worker, who could not give his name because of tight restrictions placed by the Lebanese army on speaking to the media. Because the explosion occurred shortly after 6 p.m., the port was largely empty, mainly staffed by security personnel at that time, the civil defense worker said.
The shock wave shattered buildings more than a mile from the port. At the site of the blast, the explosion vaporized entire concrete structures and eviscerated a pier that had jutted more than 200 yards into the water.

That’s a good point, and I admit, I didn’t think about that.

If the explosion had happened at, let’s say, 10 or 11 a.m. local time, yeah….the death toll would’ve been absolutely horrific, probably on par with - if not exceeding - the death toll from the 1917 Halifax Explosion (1,950 confirmed fatalities in that disaster).

The tenacity with which they stick with him in complete disregard for his past, his record, and the phonyness of his religiousness, makes it highly likely that he could have chosen satan as his VP and it wouldn’t have matter one bit to these nutjobs.

This is from Czech media, translated into English via Google Translate. It’s about the new Russian COVID-19 vaccine.

I’ll put it in a private tag as it’s somewhat lengthy and no need to clutter up the page here. Original here: novinky.cz

If there were any justice in this world, Alex Jones would be felled by COVID-19. OTOH, perhaps this coronavirus is a plague sent by G-d to punish our nation for the continued racism and sexism that led to the election of DT in the first place.

If the details in that Czech news article I posted are correct, that vaccine could well be a disaster waiting to happen. It’s never been tested on people younger than 18 or older than 60. It’s never been tested on pregnant or nursing women. It’s never even been tested for medical contraindications, FFS.

FL Sherrif seems to be over-stepping his authority. Visitors to the sheriff’s department would have to remove masks, even. Let alone the rest of the BS.

‘This is no longer a debate’: Florida sheriff bans deputies, visitors from wearing masks

On Tuesday, as Florida set a daily record for covid-19 deaths, Marion County Sheriff Billy Woods prohibited his deputies from wearing masks at work. His order, which also applies to visitors to the sheriff’s office, carves out an exception for officers in some locations, including hospitals, and when dealing with people who are high-risk or suspected of having the novel coronavirus.

In an email to the sheriff’s department shared with The Washington Post, Woods disputed the idea that masks are a consensus approach to battling the pandemic.

“We can debate and argue all day of why and why not. The fact is, the amount of professionals that give the reason why we should, I can find the exact same amount of professionals that say why we shouldn’t,” Woods wrote in the email, which was first reported by the Ocala Star-Banner.

RE: The Russian “vaccine”

Why am I thinking of the Star Trek TOS episode “Miri”???????

I was thinking of that early TNG episode where a species on one planet was effectively exploiting the fuck out of a species on another planet by giving them “medicine” for what the exploited species thought was an “incurable disease”. In reality the “medicine” was Star Treks take on heroin and the whole fucking society was hooked on drugs, with the exploiting species functioning as their dealer. The “disease” was the withdrawal effects from the dope.

Yep. I mean, hell, this is almost like something right out of apocalyptic sci-fi/horror. Pandemic breaks out, scientists rush to find a vaccine, one vaccine is released without proper testing, then you turn on the news one day and see live reports from Moscow that look uncannily like the opening credits of the 2006 Dawn of the Dead remake.

Doesn’t Hydroxychloroquine have contradictions for people with diabetes. I think I saw one study mentioned that it did not play well with Metformin, which is pretty widely used.

Another reason the flogging of that drug for Covid-19 was simply risky and irresponsible.

IIRC, “Miri” is the episode where they find a ruined world with teens the only ones running around on the planet. And there is a disease that essentially disfigures and kills you once you get past puberty. The away team catches it, of course, and the teens have stolen their communicators so they lose touch with the ship towards getting help developing a vaccine.

A somewhat reliable source, Science magazine

“In a startling and confusing move, Russia claimed today it had approved the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine, as the nation’s Ministry of Health issued what’s called a registration certificate for a vaccine candidate that has been tested in just 76 people. The certificate allows the vaccine, developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow, to be given to “a small number of citizens from vulnerable groups,” including medical staff and the elderly, a Ministry of Health spokesperson tells ScienceInsider. But the certificate stipulates that the vaccine cannot be used widely until 1 January 2021, presumably after larger clinical trials have been completed.

It’s like everything else he’s done since the spring, it’s all about distracting people from the crisis rather than actually addressing it. A federal government interested in protecting school children would have proposed spending to shore up safety measures in schools and support virtual learning programs. Instead, we get the Tea Party approach of “THE WEAK MUST PERISH SO THAT THE STRONG MAY THRIVE!!!”

The creation of DHS was more about the view that the various agencies being scattered among the different departments was what led to 9/11, the idea that if you got all the intel and domestic security agencies under one roof then they could better coordinate and provide a unified defense against further terrorist attacks.

But what worked in theory ended up being a total disaster in practice, because like the creation of the DoD back in the middle of the 20th century, the new department spent more time consolidating its power and justifying its existence than actually doing its damned job.

Biden, like Harris, is a lawyer. Lawyers are used to being able to respectfully disagree with others and have civilized discussions/debated on how to handle issues. Trump is a con man with a fragile ego who has convinced himself, despite numerous bankruptcies and even more failed ventures that he is a “master of the universe” and thus can never be wrong.

It makes total sense that Biden would want people with differing views/experiences. Likewise it would make sense that Trump will accept no voice but his own.

The same goal could have been accomplished by simply improving communications between agencies (which was the real problem, for example the CIA couldn’t tell the FBI or Customs that someone was on the way to the country or already in the country). And yes, lawsuits against school districts are coming, because most of the assholes who insisted on in-person learning did so knowing that experts were advising against such unless safety measures were in place and enforced. In the spring, they could get away with lack of action because people were still figuring out how dangerous the virus was and how easily it spread. But it’s 6 months hence, the excuse that “We didn’t know it would be this bad!” is not going to sway a jury.

The original point of DHS was to get rid of the wall separating military and law enforcement intelligence when dealing with terrorism. They called it The Jamie Gorelick Wall.

DHS should be a room with a few desks or a big conference table with a person from each of DoJ, DoD, CIA, and NSA with authority to share information. That’s it. Call it the Federal Intelligence Liason Office or some shit.

The whole argument for the creation of the DHS was that the institutional barriers meant to prevent intel agencies from sharing too much info about American citizens had “gone too far” and made it impossible for those agencies to cooperate for fear that somebody would either exploit that intel or that the sharing of such intel would be made public and turn into a massive political scandal.

But like everything about the response to 9/11, they totally overcompensated by doing exactly what people feared while insisting that it could never happen because doddering-old fucks with little to no intel community experience felt the regulations against such were foolproof.

ADOS (American Descendants of Slaves) is a movement that basically seeks to exclude the “wrong” Black people from civil rights spaces — ie anyone who can’t trace their lineage directly to a Southern plantation.

Totally valid. I know I always calibrate my racism based on the likely ancestral history of the person in question.

I’m sure Google wouldn’t like those either. Lotsa Tech Bros are kinda for all those things.

Speaking as a Googler, I can tell you I can’t remember ever meeting a Tech Bro there. My boss is a Croatian woman. Her boss is an Asian-American woman. Above that it’s pretty much South Asian men. I mostly work with East Asians and South Asians. Some Europeans. Some Americans of European descent.

No. The pine beetle infestation mostly spared the Glenwood Canyon and the Flat Tops Mountains to the north. It’s just really dry and hot and windy.

It really seems as if conservatives worldwide (but especially in the US) have completely gotten high on their own supply of bullshit and talking points. The Conservatives in the UK were as surprised as the other parties were by the results of the Brexit referendum back in 2016. This didn’t stop them co-opting and then weaponising that xenophobic racist voting block in the last election, the one that put Boris in Number Ten with an unassailable majority in the House of Commons. A lot of old Conservative “One Nation” MPs left Parliament before the election and they were replaced by young and idealistic shiny-brained Brexiteers who were elected to “get Brexit done”. The COVID-19 pandemic breaking out a couple of months afterwards was just the turd topping on the shit sundae.

Kellywise’s comments are an awesome example of just how Harris’ nomination has the Trump campaign all over the fucking map. They’re trying to portray Biden and Harris as “soft on crime,” but also want to hit the former for the ‘94 Crime Bill and the latter for locking up too many pot smokers. It also shows how much of a joke the campaign’s “LAW & ORDER!!!” bit is when they’re trying to go after the other side as being “too tough” on criminals.
