My Dad has talked about donating to them. He’s never donated to a campaign before. I hadn’t either until I donated to Joe in the winter.

The notion of nominating “The Ticket” is rather recent. When the Dem convention met to nominate FDR for his 4th term, no one (including FDR and Truman) could be sure that Truman would get the nod from the delegates.

I wonder if it was at all nerve-wracking for Biden and Harris and their aides to write today’s speeches and make sure that NOTHING would fail a fact check. One of the obvious differences between Biden and Trump is that he LIES ABOUT EVERYTHING, and if there was even one thing in today’s presentation that could be pulled out as not true, a good chunk of the press would jump on it or duly cover it as a both-sides issue.

Just honestly relaying what Trump has done over the last four years sounds unbelievable. I hope that no one slips up on a fact that the whole republican-media machine can jump on and the rest of the compliant media feels the need to agree that unfortunately, yes, both sides resort to untruths.

I want it to be sparkling clear for the next three months which side can’t tell the truth.

Back when the party establishments had more power, they really did choose not only the vice presidential nominee, but also the presidential nominee. It usually involved all sorts of horse trading.

It really wasn’t until the 1960s when the parties lost the power to pick the presidential nominees.

LeftyRambles2413 (HappyWarrior)  Aug 12, 2020 • 3:14:56pm

Something I liked in Biden’s speech but he talked about how he liked and wanted Harris to challenge him. It reminded me of Biden appreciating Clyburn’s tips on the campaign trail. And it also is a contrast with Trump who certainly discourages dissident in his inner circle. Biden may be old but a fool he is not. He understands leadership. And leadership is what we’ve needed from 1/20/17.

OK, I watched a video blog that is filling up it’s comment section with audiophile jokes. The actual blog post is a little forced, but some of the comments are pretty good. You can tell everyone’s been shut in with their stereos for too long.

The most interesting audiophile in the world refuses to enter his listening room because his presence is detrimental to the sound of his system.

…and when the Beatles played for him [on the Apple rooftop], they played in mono.

His system is so resolving, he’s the first person to explain the meaning to the lyrics of “Watermelon Sugar”.

His wife acceptance factor is so high, he might be the father of your children.

The World’s Most Interesting Audiophile is still using a ‘Mayware’ Tone Arm; shod with ADC XLM Mk. II or a Denon 103 D; mounted on a Technics SL-120 Turntable. Yes, the “uni - pivot” Tone Arm , that’s Damped using 4 MERCURY filled Reservoirs!

I do have a serious disagreement with one part of Kamala’s speech: Her very misleading discussion of Ebola. Ebola is not airborne; apparently it isn’t spread until the patient is symptomatic; you develop symptoms within a couple weeks at the most and it’s highly lethal within a fairly short period of time after you become symptomatic. Controlling the spread of a disease like that in a first world country is not that complicated, especially when the epidemic starts elsewhere so you are aware of its presence. Ebola was not a new disease where up to 80% of cases are very mild and only 5%-10% require any medical intervention.

If President Obama was still in office, he would have taken the pandemic seriously from the get go. We wouldn’t have 160,000 plus deaths.

Honestly, I’m glad she brought it up because Ebola was used to propel the GOP in the 2014 midterms when Covid has been much worse and yet Trump wants to give himself a ten on it.

re: #103 Hecuba’s daughter

What is the real problem here with this nitpicking?
Obama/Biden dealt with the Ebola threat and only 2 Americans died.
The comparison doesn’t count because “Ebola isn’t airborne”?
Trump sure thought it did at the time.

Not to mention, Obama’s response was used by the GOP to attack his leadership. She had every right to draw a contrast between how Obama, Biden, and Ron Klain (remember that name, he would be my early bet to be Joe’s Chief of Staff since he already did that job for Joe when he was veep) handled Ebola versus Mr. “It’s going to disappear.” Trump’s response to Covid has been B disaster movie bad President bad.

Yeah, I reported the Tweet and told this guy to take a look of U.S. v. Wong Kim Ark (1898). I also dug up his profile at the law school to try and understand why he styled himself “Doctor.” Well it turns out that he has a doctorate from Claremont University. Somehow, given Claremont’s reputation for some of its colleges being right wing holes, I am completely unimpressed.

I’m going to be blunt here, I think it’s tasteless to wave around the “Dr.” credential if you’re not an MD, DO, DMD, DDS or someone who does medical work. I also think it’s tasteless to put “Esq” in one’s Twitter handle like a certain Jenna Ellis. This is just a me thing. I don’t expect anyone to follow me on my peccadillos.

MLK had a doctorate. I hear ya though because people assume medical doc. Seriously though. The shit I’ve been seeing directed against many first generation Americans like Obama, even shitheads I hate like Cruz/Rubio, and now Harris because of their parents’ status at their birth legitimately pisses me off. When my mom’s older aunts and uncles were born their parents weren’t citizens yet. And yet Uncle Stan enlisted in the US Army when shitbirds like Lindburgh were blabbing Nazi propaganda in Des Moines.

The angst that the white Trumpers feel is not just that she’s black, but that Harris is also from a complex ancestry.

Harris cannot be easily categorized by old, outdated concepts, in as far as those 55yo white Karens were taught all their lives.

It comes as a surprise to some Americans, apparently, that “black” is a social group that does not depend upon the fraction of sub-saharan ancestry a person happens to have inherited. There is no “one-drop” rule at work here. “Black” as defined in the US is based on ancestry only so far as the being identified by oneself and others.

Harris is a “black” woman exactly because she identifies as such and because others in her society also identify her as such.

The attempt to de-“black” is nothing but an attempt by Republican strategists to attack the support that Democrats have with black Americans.

The complexity of Harris’ background is exactly what the Tucker Carlson’s of this world are afraid - that as people from various backgrounds mix the easy categories by which to pigeon-hole people will become more difficult. Racism is more difficult when the boundaries are all blurred between people.

Racism is more difficult when the boundaries are all blurred between people.

I lived in New Orleans for ten years. Three specific political demographics:

White people of any religion; Black Protestants; and, creole/mixed race/quadroons/octaroons, mostly Catholic.

I remember a mayor’s race where a mixed-race Catholic was running against a Black Protestant. We got leaflets in parts of the town saying that the mixed-race Catholic wasn’t “black enough” to represent the black community. The Black Protestant candidate, William Jefferson, lost the race because the white people rallied around the mixed-race guy.

Jefferson later got elected to Congress. It didn’t end well.

The point being that race is a tough bitch kitty to crack, especially in modern times.

In New Orleans, for 150 years mixed race people were the middle class in town, going all the way back to the Louisiana Purchase. Shopkeepers, chandlers, blacksmiths, restauranteurs, greengrocers, dressmakers. It was an odd mix for the country as a whole.

Now, people of mixed race are much more common. You are, and should be, what you identify yourself as, as long as it’s legitimate. Does that mean one drop of blood makes you black? Or Native American?

Expanding on that, what is your sexuality? Is sexuality fluid? Is race fluid?

Being an old, straight, Irish/German, white guy, I can’t address this. All I know is that when people attempt to put labels on you, they have an agenda that is not to your benefit.

Try to pigeonhole people at your risk. They just might back, hard.
