Most voters don’t pay attention before the conventions; when the GOP convention starts they will have settled on the racist misogynist lies for attacking Kamala and an overall campaign strategy for demonizing the ticket.

Do have to say that the cartoons comparing Trump on a motorcycle to Biden on a bicycle seem particularly lame given that no one has ever seen Trump riding anything except his golf cart, while Biden was energetically bicycling on Fox TV.

Savor every Kamala Harris insult. Observe the self-debasement. Understand this is the visible side of panic. Lost sleep. Desperation among our enemies. If they had anything better it would be on full display. They do not. To win big, let them be them and point out where they went.

Kamala will prevail. Just watch. I’ll buy the first round.

From the last thread.

By the way, I got an E-mail from the Secular Coalition for America noting that for the first time, non-Christian atheists will be allowed to hold symposiums at the Democratic National Convention, in keeping with the new Democratic Platform recognising we exist and have rights.

They will have a series of lectures on taking back our Constitution from Christianity. One of the speakers will be the SCA’s Nebraska director.

re: #159 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

I stopped mourning my family’s descent into Christian hate years ago. The denomination didn’t matter, nor did the size of the church. My sister from the allegedly moderate and welcoming MCC church (at which she’s a deacon) was only the latest (when my wife and I went to Chicago on the death of my step-father).

There are only two members of my family who will speak to me now.

Republicans have been working for decades to strip citizenship from those born to immigrants. This is nothing new; it’s been going on all my life. It is why I fear for my own citizenship with conservatives in power.

Yup. If they could mount an attack on her positions as California Attorney General or as a senator, they would already be doing that. They went straight to racist attack because that’s all they have. That will play okay with the racist base of the Republican Party, but not too much outside it.

Meanwhile, my daughter tells me my 13 month old granddaughter is becoming a food snob. It seems they gave her some sort of Japanese chicken loaf for dinner, which she had enjoyed previously. She took some, popped it in her mouth, and then spit it out and handed it to her mother. Then she did the same thing a couple more times. At that point her father remembered that he had previously put furikake on it, but hadn’t this time. Basically, my granddaughter was sending it back to the chef. When the situation was rectified, harmony was restored to the universe. This doesn’t necessarily bode well for the future, however. :)

These scared old white a-holes who would rather live in a dystopian police state run by a malignant narcissistic buffoon than have anyone with a drop of melanin possibly have a decent chance in life are completely alien to me.

“Demographic shift” cannot happen fast enough for me. I want the United States to be a mix of people and cultures from all over the world. I want everyone to know 3 or 4 languages (it’d be nice if there was a common one for everyone but I’m not going to die on an it must be English hill). I want almost everyone to look like Kamala Harris as well as have the whole spectrum of colors from the darkest browns to the lightest whites. I want the concept of “majority” and “minority” to go away.

For that matter, as long as we have human rights, civil rights, freedom of speech, freedom of religion, a secular state, work as a nation as a force for good when possible, etc. I really don’t care what we “look” like because rights, institutions, and laws matter, the color doesn’t.

re: #13 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

It certainly doesn’t help matters when Trump is circulating these bullshit ideas:

President Donald Trump on Thursday gave credence to a false and racist conspiracy about Kamala Harris’ eligibility to be vice president, fueling an online misinformation campaign that parallels the one he used to power his rise into politics.

Asked about the matter at the White House, Trump told reporters he had “heard” rumors that Harris, a Black woman and U.S.-born citizen whose parents were immigrants, does not meet the requirement to serve in the White House. The president said he considered the rumors “very serious.”

The conspiracy is false. Harris, who was tapped this week by Joe Biden to serve as his running mate on the Democratic ticket, was born in Oakland, California, and is eligible to be president under the constitutional requirements. The question is not even considered complex, according to constitution lawyers.

“Full stop, end of story, period, exclamation point,” said Jessica Levinson, a professor at Loyola Law School.

The story about the car was pretty sweet.

I was hoping that the modern Corvette at the end was driven by Obama, but that would have been way too much for the secret service. Do you know who that was? The clip just kind of cut off at the reveal. It was obviously someone that Joe knew and liked.

I just went through this discussion elsewhere. Two children between the ages of 1 and 17 are murdered (not suicide or accidental death) every day in the US. Presumably a lot of those are in their teenage years, but by no means all (also, a 14 year old’s murder is a bad thing too.)
These are all local stories unless there is something that makes them rise above the steady drumbeat of dead children. This story is a tragedy. So is the story of all these children.

Edit: murdered with guns.

It’s really sad how Newsweek, which was once a respectable slightly left-of-center publication that I subscribed to for several years long before print descended into its death spiral, has transformed to a worthless right wing rag, probably still getting clicks because of its former reputation. If anyone wants a change from politics, there’s a 1000’ long freighter arriving at Duluth Harbor somewhere around 10:00. Here’s the live cam for the canal into the harbor, and here’s the live cam for the lift bridge.

I discovered these about a week ago and it’s been a really restful break from bad news. I’m going to make a day trip up there sometime before the month ends (It’s a little over 3 hours away for me). last night there was a bug crawling around on the bridge cam for a couple of minutes and the path that it followed made it look like the bridge was being attacked.

The highest point in Nebraska is named Panorama Point (in the southwest corner of the Panhandle). It is higher in elevation than Denver, but still looks pretty flat. (The article goes to Wikipedia with a photograph of Panorama Point.)

Newsweek editors Nancy Cooper and Josh Hammer would really like the world to think that they did not publish a racist article attacking Kamala Harris’s eligibility to serve as vice president of the United States. In fact, Cooper and Hammer wrote an entirely separate article — stylized as an “editor’s note” — to insist they are not racists for promoting the second great wave of American birtherism aimed at Harris, whose parents are Jamaican and Indian. Legal experts were decidedly a bit skeptical.

Defending Rights & Dissent Policy Director Chip Gibbons tweeted: “My editor’s note explaining that the column we ran is not racist has a lot of people asking questions already answered by my editor’s note.”
