I thought the little furry friends that showed up on my carport about a month ago had moved on to somewhere else because I didn’t see them for about a week. However, they have returned:

We can’t keep them all. Between these three, their mother and my Eisley that’s five cats total. While we do have a several acre property here I just don’t want that many cats around.

More than likely I am going to give away two of the kittens and keep one who has taken a particular liking to me (the one on the right in the photo) Mama cat will probably not like me for that but we’ll see how this goes.

Can you capture the mama cat and get her fixed so she doesn’t keep getting pregnant. The three there are cute, but litter after litter, not so much. There may be a rescue in your area that has information on trap, neuter and release.

Well you know, 66 Senators not up for reelection are going to get a well deserved 28 day vacation. 33 or so are Repubs. They have four weeks to blow major donors, get blown by expensive hookers, drink 18-year old scotch, and work on their tans.

In the mean time, just doing a bit of scratch paper doodling, millions of people just took a $600 a week pay cut when they can least afford it. I don’t know how many people that is, because no one wants to talk about hourly workers who may/may not be eligible for the bump, but let’s just say it’s 10,000,000 people.

Multiply that by 600 and you get a loss of $6 billion/week. For four weeks. A $24 billion loss in GDP. That’s not gigantic, but add to that the foreclosures, the evictions, parents desperately trying to find child care, food, and available shelter, and we begin to start sounding like Syria.

A failed State.

If someone had told me in 2015 my country would be facing this economic/political meltdown, I would have laughed and said “C’mon! Please detail the series of events in which that could possibly happen!”

And Dog said, “Hold my beer, grasshopper.”

This is hell for us, and there is one person who is principally to blame for it. He has lots of little He is surrounded by a shitpot of useful idiots, but the prime mover in this is DJT.

I don’t know if Dog, saying “Hold my beer.” could have done a better job of wrecking our country than DJT has. It’s been brilliant, actually.

So vote him out. Vote out all of his useful idiots, from dog catcher to school boards to City, County, State and National pukes. Every single one of them, and purge them to the memory hole and pile the dirt on them.

It’s going to take a long time to rebuild this country after being raped this long and hard, but we have to start now.

Night all. Woke dreams.

The bolded is really what they’ve forgotten. It’s become so normal for us to assume every president wishes to serve 2 terms that Joe saying he only plans to be there for one doesn’t compute. They’re working under the assumption that Joe plans to make this a two-term deal and the campaign brought on Harris to avoid her being a problem in 2024.

One major effect of being in the right wing bubble is that they have utterly no idea of how the rest of the population thinks. So, Biden Is A Cuck is their go-to winner argument. It’d be nice for CNN to point out that Trump and Melania are committing voter fraud if they’re claiming they live at Mar-a-Lago as their home, because Mar-a-Lago is a business address, not a residential address.

And it’d be even nicer for CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS, CNBC., etc., to repeatedly point that out. On an hourly basis.

Interesting thread on Belarus protests. She does reiterate that the demands are pretty narrow, and this is not a West vs Russia thing.

The Russian state media seems to be pretty confused on how to approach this and has kind of been all over the place. This probably reflects Kremlin confusion on what to do about it, since that’s where the state media gets their marching orders. Little Green Men popping up in Minsk is probably not in the cards, though, considering how badly it polls in Russia.

I think it might depend on how things turn out - if Lukashenko ends up getting a “Nicolae Ceaușescu surprise retirement party”, I really wouldn’t be all that surprised to see the Kremlin making some kind of intervention.

I think it might depend on how things turn out - if Lukashenko ends up getting a “Nicolae Ceaușescu surprise retirement party”, I really wouldn’t be all that surprised to see the Kremlin making some kind of intervention.

Who knows what crazy shit may happen, but a couple things. First, this is not a pro-Western revolt to join NATO and the EU tomorrow, and Lukashenka has had an increasingly strained relationship with Russia recently, so Russia’s best bet would be to try to make some sort of accommodation with whoever the new government turns out to be. The new Belarusian government would probably have its hands full enough without getting into a brawl with its big threatening neighbor.

Second, invading Belarus does not poll well with Russians. The Russian government does a lot of quiet polling, and is very sensitive to public opinion in many ways: when you’re an authoritarian populist government with no real rule of law and weak institutions, you are reliant on at least public acquiescence to avoid shit going to hell very quickly. This ain’t Crimea and this ain’t 2014.

So, I’d be surprised if the Russians fucked with Belarus in any significant way, but I’ve been surprised before I guess.

Bon appétit.

In July the FSIS approved a petition from the National Chicken Council requesting that slaughterhouses be allowed to process broilers infected with Avian Leukosis — a virus that causes chickens to develop cancerous lesions and tumors. Inspectors would no longer be required to examine the first 300 birds of each flock for signs of the disease, and processors would be able to cut off tumors and lesions and then process the rest of the bird. The approval has led to a proposed rule change that is now before the food safety administrator Paul Kiecker.

Here’s what we know about Avian Leukosis: A small percentage of birds (less than 1%) are diagnosed with the virus each year, but it spreads quickly through flocks and tens of thousands of chickens are condemned annually due to exposure. While it’s unlikely that the virus could transfer from chickens to humans, it’s not impossible. There is some evidence that workers exposed to birds infected with the disease in the U.K. have developed antibodies, indicating a transfer of the virus from animal to human.

He worked in the Obama administration. Seems like a cool dude and a true moderate Republican.

Here’s some photos from a soon-to-be-completed archaeological dig in the center of Ostrava. Construction work unearthed some cellars, and it was soon realized it was part of a 13th century household. They’ve found some small artifacts such as an earring and fragments of household pottery.

It’s disgusting. And if food safety regulations are ramped back up in a Biden administration, well, I can hear the shrieking of Big Agro now. They’re not gonna like it one bit, and the GOP will - of course - be screaming bloody murder.

They’ll be taking away white meat as well as the red meat Pence is already screaming about in his panic about a future 1 v 1 discussion with Harris.

I want to post this Last Word clip because I like a couple of the points that Steve Schmidt is making about how democrats are focusing on doing everything they can to make this election successful. We’re focusing on getting out the vote and making sure everyone votes as early as possible. The only people listening to Trump’s message against mail-in voting are republicans, some of which have been voting by mail for ages. He sounded uncharacteristically optimistic and this morning I want to grab onto that thought.

Pelosi can’t remove Trump or any of the other corrupt fucknuts in Trumpworld. GOP is covering up those criminals and their crimes by obstructing oversight powers of Congress and refusing to act.

Pelosi can’t unilaterally act to help tens of millions of people who are unemployed, again because the GOP don’t care. They’ve gone on vacation til September, because the GOP would rather do nothing and know that the media will magic balance fairy bulkshit the hell out of things by saying “Congress is on recess until September” while leaving out the bit that the House passed a relief bill in MAY.

From the “what could possibly go wrong?” department -

The five idled cruise ships stretch end-to-end across what was once one of the world’s busiest ports — and that now amounts to a surreal, gleaming white mile of empty pools, buffet restaurants and piano bars. The ships have enough space combined for 26,000 people. For months, no passengers have come aboard.

But after taking refuge here during an unprecedented global cruise stoppage, some of these ships will soon be sailing again, chauffeuring customers on Mediterranean vacation packages amid the pandemic.

Though cruising has been ordered to a halt in the United States, several major cruise liners are trying to restart their business in Europe, with Italy as the epicenter of the effort. One ship, the MSC Grandiosa, will begin a voyage Sunday, the first to restart in the Mediterranean. Several others will follow soon behind. The companies have consulted with scientists, drawn up new safety protocols and received Italian government clearance; MSC Cruises, on its website, says passengers can now “cruise with confidence.”

While I don’t think that the Dems can outright stop Trump from doing a lot of things, I do think that Congress has been somewhat shy about its oversight role. I still want to go on a cruise someday. The problem is that ships are tightly-contained environments, and if something goes wrong it goes VERY wrong. So if there’s something wrong in the world around the ship, you don’t get on the ship.

Hard on the cruise lines, tho. Not advocating bailouts.

Worth a look.

thedailybeast.com

Dress Rehearsal—a documentary short that, absent a viral plague, would have debuted next week on the night of Joe Biden’s acceptance speech before thousands of cheering delegates in Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum—offers Trump’s opponents a rosy scenario for preventing a recurrence of such a catastrophe on Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Director David Modigliani’s 17-minute film—which instead will receive its premiere online on the same Thursday night as Biden’s oration, the night after California Sen. Kamala Harris is scheduled to accept the vice presidential nomination during an all-virtual Democratic National Convention—chronicles how Wisconsin Democrats deployed digital technology and “relational organizing technology” (a fancy term for friends talking to friends) to triumph over the lethal COVID-19 pandemic and the GOP’s relentless campaign to suppress the vote.

Modigliani, for his part, claimed not to be disappointed that he will have to imagine the applause his premiere might otherwise receive.

Phoenix is on pace to have the hottest summer on record. Long term fall forecast calls for well above to above normal temps for most of the west. As an escapee of Phoenix, that will be miserable. For me, September was always the worst month. Your brain is telling you it’s fall and most of the rest of the country is starting to transition to crisp mornings. Phoenix, meanwhile, sits well above 100 for most of the month, which will be especially true if fall temps are above average. Halloween is usually the point in the year that you can be confident that the summer fever has broken.

The fire that is menacing Teleskiguy’s area (along with a second fire due west of it) are kicking up ridiculous levels of smoke, to the point that the interior of my house—200+ miles away—smells like a camp fire (in fact, the smoke from both of those fires is noticeable for thousands of miles to the east. You basically have a funnel effect along the I-70 corridor, so it’s not that surprising). The weather certainly won’t be helping mitigation efforts.

While it’s not uncommon in our system for a Congressional party to fall apart in bitter recriminations want to reorganize after an electoral shellacking, I’m not sure - outside of the general benefit of “disarray” - that this is going to be all that good a prospect for the next Congress (or later ones), inasmuch as whoever might replace McCarthy as Minority Leader is likely to be even more of a wingnut and obstructionist: if not an outright Qretin.

Heh.

If Trump loses badly - and takes the Senate down with him (and who knows, maybe a couple of statehouses or governorships) - the recriminations within the GOP are going to start flying like the ICBMs at the end of Terminator 3.

Because he has no health insurance he never did this.

If the Trumpites split away from the GOP and start their own party, I’d be quite happy with that development. That segment of the vote would be almost permanently split between the Republican Party and the MAGA Party.

Of course, the outcome of a intra-party civil war could also mean that the Trumpites take over completely.

Kevin Clinesmith, who worked in the FBI general counsel’s office, is expected to admit he doctored an email so it said that former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page was not a source for the CIA, even though Page had had a relationship with the agency. Relying on what Clinesmith had said, the FBI ultimately did not disclose Page’s relationship with the CIA as it applied to renew a warrant to monitor him as a possible agent of a foreign power.

Just like in the movies!

This jerk’s ride is no longer the ultimate driving machine.

A BMW owner parked the flashy car in front of a Bronx hydrant overnight — and got a costly lesson when a fire broke out nearby and the FDNY smashed his windows to run their hose.

Firefighters rushed to the three-story building on Holland Avenue around 3:30 a.m. when the two-alarm blaze broke on the first floor and eventually spread through the house.

That’s when they found the blacked-out beamer parked right in front of the hydrant.

Firefighters shattered the front windows and ran the waterline over the sports car’s front passenger’s and driver’s seats.

To pour salt in the wounds, driver also got a ticket.

Aside from the neato factor what is the benefit of hanging the train under a track as opposed to having it ride on top?

IIRC, the idea was space maximization. But it was the neato factor….the designer wanted to sell the whole concept to Berlin.

It’s still in operation, too.

If I read the ticket correctly, that’s pretty expensive/km for real public transport.

Sanity break.

This is 100% gonzo. The Soviet T-35 land battleship. I’ve never heard of this one.

Oh. That thing. Yeah, it was beyond bad even by the standards of the time.

This is neat. Stabilized/colorized film footage of Wuppertal’s Schwebebahn shot in 1902. Set to 60 fps. Some major steampunk vibes.

and a friend of mine has a 1/100 electric scale model of that

It’s just an excuse to be racist.

Walt Disney probably didn’t pay anyone…it’s in Anaheim. And Las Vegas.

The Schwebebahn (literally “floating railroad”) is located in a narrow, densely populated river valley. A subway was not possible so they went with hanging it on stilts above the valley.

Put the train on top of the track then the track or its supports take up space on the ground. This thing is in a town that is on the banks of a river running down a valley, lots of the track is actually over the river.

Churches could be open. Many are.
Some refuse to operate and conduct services safely

re: #183 Vote Cthulhu - No longer the greater evil!

Yeah, I could see the remaining Republican representatives pushing someone like Gaetz or Gohmert into a leadership position.

Speaking of Gohmert! have we heard anything from him? Also, my idiot congressman, Andy Biggs, head of the FREEDUMB Caucus, would love to be minority leader.

Whether the train is suspended or sitting on an elevated track seems it would need the same amount of support, gravity is pulling it in the same direction regardless.
