Trump Resurrects His Racist Birther Smear, Against Kamala Harris This Time

Politics • Views: 16,690

The most sociopathic president in US history is trying to bring back birtherism, targeted against Kamala Harris, but something’s different this time — the media seem to be unwilling to play along to the same degree they did with Trump’s smears against Barack Obama.

Trump is basing this ridiculous nonsense on a risible article by a right wing crank, of course.

Trump, who led a “birther” conspiracy movement against former President Barack Obama, told reporters Thursday that he heard a “highly qualified, very talented lawyer” opine that Harris didn’t qualify to serve as vice president but did not know if it were true or not. Trump was responding to a question and was referring to a Newsweek opinion piece by law professor John Eastman inaccurately calling into question Harris’ eligibility.

“I heard it today that she doesn’t meet the requirements,” Trump said. “I have no idea if that’s right. I would have assumed that the Democrats would have checked that out before she gets chosen to run for vice president.”

Check out these headlines from major news sites. They all label this as false, and some of them even state — correctly — that this conspiracy theory is racist at its core. I even see the word “lie.” Be still my heart.

Back in the bad old birther days, the attitude was either “both-sides” or “ignore this silliness,” and this irresponsible coverage undoubtedly helped Donald Trump. I wouldn’t get too hopeful yet, but apparently some lessons were learned at some outlets. (But not at Newsweek, where they published the garbage article that fueled Trump’s attack.)

The fire more than doubled in size yesterday. The community five miles to the west is under pre-evacuation notice. Last night I could see flames just down the street from my house. There’s a lot of ash on the ground. The smoke has obscured all the mountains. Forecast calls for hot and dry weather for the next several days.

He’s certainly trying. What it may come down to is….gonna have to get out there and physically vote, in person, at your polling location.

There may be no other choice.

The problem with this strategy is it doesn’t target Democrats. It targets voters. And, as we saw in Wisconsin and DC earlier this year, and even in places like Houston, Democrats will show up to vote. He’s more than likely going to be hurting himself.

I saw a report yesterday that truckers actually thought they could detour around by way of Independence Pass and were getting stuck. How stupid do you have to be to try that without taking a good long look at the map and realizing it was not only not a truck route, but they weren’t likely to make it?

All the backroads (Crooked Creek Pass, Hagerman Pass, Cottonwood Pass) to get through are closed. Too many yahoos with passenger cars and no experience trying to drive them and getting into accidents. I hear the roads are trashed.

Hell my Uncle Stanley’s name is recorded as Stanislav on his birth certificate with the spelling of my Grandfather’s surname as it is in Slovenia. He ended up enlisting in the US Army at a time when “ real Americans” like Lindbergh were praising Hitler. Kamala is American. Period.

It’s a desperate move. It will come down to motivation - the more you tell people they can’t do something, that it’s going to be taken away - the more they will crawl over broken glass to do it.

Here, in ‘89, it was more behind the scenes; once the Central Committee realized the Czechoslovak Army was not going to fire on its own citizens, the StB declined to intervene (and to this day, there’s still no explanation on that one, other than maybe the Director General of the StB realized it was game over) and then when Gorbachev said, “LOL nyet” to a request to use the Soviet garrison to put down the crowds, the Central Committee pretty much resigned en masse and that was that.

Managed to solve the LGF AT&T connection problem. It was, er, uh, because I had neglected to pay my bill and had missed the letter informing me of such. I don’t use auto-pay because I was always a little paranoid about it, and I don’t like surprises anyway. The odd thing, though, was that sites other than LGF kept working for me, so I didn’t suspect a general cut off.
The usual restart thing hadn’t worked, so I finally went to their web-page (an exercise in 90s nostalgia, if such a revolting motive can actually exist) and it informed me of the lapse. They are not shy about it at all.
I also did some research and found that AT&T has frequently had problems with random websites not showing up for customers. The shamans attribute this to some kind of VPN voodoo. One poor victim accused AT&T of “censoring conservative sites” because her no-show 404 item was some kind of right wing propaganda site. She went on to threaten an FTC complaint (yes, FTC rather than FCC) and said she would personally put a letter on the desk of the “president” of AT&T. Obviously that wasn’t the case here, since nefarious god-hating liberal media lords would have scant reason to censor LGF, unless, possibly, Charles had missed a protection payment to BLM. Even that is unlikely, though, since protection rackets normally don’t go after actual sources of income, lest they never be paid at all. Recall, for instance, that the Corleones went after the scumbat producer’s horse rather than his studio.
Turned out I was the one in arrears, though not to a protection racket unless we could stretch the definition to include AT&T. I coughed up some dough, and we are now back in business.

The ballot warnings, issued at the end of July from Thomas J. Marshall, general counsel and executive vice president of the Postal Service, and obtained through a records request by The Washington Post, were planned before the appointment of Louis DeJoy, a former logistics executive and ally of President Trump, as postmaster general in early summer. They go beyond the traditional coordination between the Postal Service and election officials, drafted as fears surrounding the coronavirus pandemic triggered an unprecedented and sudden shift to mail-in voting.

Looks like Robert Englund is getting his own signature coffee line from Dead Sled Coffee.

I first read the story in Czech media, which had to explain a bit the whole Nightmare on Elm Street franchise because that’s not too well-known to Czech audiences. Nonetheless, they noted that “Englund’s brilliant portrayal of the central antagonist, Freddy Kruger, a serial killer who attacked children, elevated him to star status and created one of the most iconic cinema villains of American horror films.”

Vanity Fair has a deep dive into the lives (and loves) of Katie and Stephen Miller.

TL:DR She is as morally bankrupt as her husband, and her origin story is similar to Stephen’s tale of bigotry, racism, and xenophobia. They truly are soulless mates.

In high school (like Stephen she went to a diverse and liberal high school), her English teacher, one of the few Black teachers in her school, assigned Toni Morrison’s Beloved. Katie pitched a fit and was removed from the class (sounds like there were meetings with her parents and this was mutual - not a kicked out thing). All of this is to be expected given what we know about her. Afterwards, she kind of harassed (for lack of a better word) the English teacher’s daughter. Katie texted the daughter asking for help with school work and wanting to study together. The daughter avoided Katie like the plague, knowing there was something nefarious about her actions. The article is peppered with examples of her doing unethical, borderline illegal things and being proud of her actions.

Katie is and always has been deplorable.

I’d add in some zip-lock baggies and/or a small mesh bag*. Plus something that can act like a clip or clothes pin. (Binder clips for instance.) Don’t take up much room and often simply are useful.

* - These are part of my standard travel kit due to traveling with my brother the geologist. (Zip locks and marker means that you can collect and label a rock sample.) I use the mesh bag as part of the clothing cycle where I wash stuff in the sink every night and the mesh bag helps air stuff that hung out overnight.

In all the inside-baseball articles about the WH, one consistent fact is that Kushner is seen as Trump’s closest advisor. The arrest of Connecticut Congressional candidate Thomas Gilmer on the eve of this week’s Republican primary threw the race into disarray. But details of his alleged violent domestic assault were known in Republican circles for more than two months before anyone contacted authorities.

Gilmer’s primary opponent, Justin Anderson, spent weeks showing a graphic video of the alleged attack to his fellow Republicans as he worked to defeat the party-backed Gilmer. The state party chairman, J.R. Romano, acknowledged he knew about the allegations as early as May. Source: Hartford Courant

The fire more than doubled in size yesterday. The community five miles to the west is under pre-evacuation notice. Last night I could see flames just down the street from my house. There’s a lot of ash on the ground. The smoke has obscured all the mountains. Forecast calls for hot and dry weather for the next several days.

Our thoughts are with you as you deal with the nearby wildfire.

I would second the advice on making copies paper and digital on anything that is difficult to replace or irreplaceable. These might include legal documents, historical documents, insurance information (such as videoing with narration your possessions and rooms), family documents and photos, etc.

Here are some more ideas from Wirecutter/New York Times that may prove useful:

This week trucks rolled up in Blue counties all over the American West and pulled mailboxes out of the ground, hauling them (and their mail contents) away, forcing thousands, possibly millions of people to travel real distances to post letters.

Trump has the powers of the Executive Branch at his disposal and is just starting to use them…I see this move as merely a distraction to cover even more heinous things he has planned as the election approaches.

The check is not there after 4 business days. Fidelity is now telling it’s customers that it’s 10 business days. used to be 3 to 4. It’s not there fault, and I’m sure that Yale is going to get a lot of late checks, but the trump admin is serisosly fing with business in the middle of a pandemic/recession. When is wall street going to speak up? How about main street? How about a single republican? MFers.

Yeah, this is pretty much sadopopulism to a T: hurt your supporters but deflect their anger onto preselected targets.

I mean, Trump’s doing it because he’s a narcissist and simply can’t stop himself because he has no ability to relate to people…but it will also happen because he’s surrounded by individuals who are calculating authoritarians who understand the pre-existing cultural norms of the right and how normal people have been primed to (1) be hurt by conservative policies, (2) get angry at whichever scapegoat group made the conservative have to do the painful thing.

Because the entire country works like a abusive family.

re: #68 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

Generally when there is a drop in employment it’s because the economy can’t support the number of workers. It is a lack of jobs, not workers. The economy falls directly. In this case the number of workers dropped first and the economy followed. There is a lack of workers. Recovering an economy where the number of potential jobs is higher than number of workers is much easier. Most of the jobs ‘created’ by Trump, were recovered automatically by the relaxation of artificial constraints.

To be fair, it’s a valid point - if the bill hasn’t been paid, I would’ve expected a full-on cutoff, not for a seemingly random website to stop working.

I figure now that they might operate like their fellow racketeers, the City of Lubbock Utilities. This is a catch-all monopoly operation that includes electricity, water, garbage, and even storm drain service. If you get behind, which you easily can since they are one of the least tolerant utility operations in the country, they will start by shutting off the water. If this fails to extort prompt payment, they will move on to shutting off your electricity and passing by your dumpster. It probably chaps their wizened, stretch- marked asses that they can’t somehow shut off the storm drain for you, and you alone, and let your house flood.

How strict are they with the poor, unfortunate, and the (harumphh) absent-minded? A few years ago, I read that people in Chicago were rioting because their water was cut off if they were 6 months or more behind. I thought, well, that could never happen in Lubbock, because nobody ever gets as much as two months behind. The bill is due 30 days after it is issued. Once the due date is past, you have another 10-12 days to pay up or it’s lights out. You can make a payment arrangement that will give you another 2 weeks past that, but that is the end. They did suspend shut-offs in March as part of the Covid response, but they are now back to normal and demanding the accumulated debt. For this they will create a 6 month schedule for paying back the past due amount. The regular bill must still be paid ON the due date though, no 10 days of grace or extra payment arrangement time.
