re: #178 The Ghost of a Flea

He’s a self-involved schlub but the party is now in the hands of the actual sadists, the pepole who have hooked together all the cultural strings forming American “conservatism” and recognized that the common theme is they’re the superior kind of people—of no particular hierarchy, but whichever hierarchy in the moment grants the most license—and everyone else needs to be hurt until they comply…or just die.

But that’s what conservatism has always been. Back when the so-called father of conservatism Edmund Burke was writing, he was writing about the French Revolution and the abolition of the monarchy and aristocracy. His position was there are natural rulers and natural subjects, and the reason the aristocracy was defeated was because they had poor aristocrats. (The modern translation of this is “conservatism cannot fail, it can only be failed”.)

Burke opposed the idea of democracy spreading across Europe, calling it “mob rule.” (We haven’t heard that one lately out of conservatives.)

When it became apparent that monarchies had to adapt or die, he shifted his positions to note that capitalism could be used to control liberal democracies by buying its politicians in the service of power. This prompted Adam Smith’s book “Wealth of Nations” in which he argued unrestricted capitalism is a cancer on a democratic society.

There is literally nothing different about today’s American conservatives and Burke’s Whigs.

Bonus item on my way out.

Last night a member of the Valentine City Council attacked the city manager, accusing him of trying to eliminate the city police department one officer at a time. Most citizens speaking at the meeting supported the police department.

That member had placed an agenda item on two days before the meeting for a motion to fire the city manager over that accusation, which failed 3-2.

There was such interest in the motions that the meeting had to be held outside yesterday evening, as there was insufficient room in city hall.

Police department Stays, City Manager Stays (KVSH-AM, Valentine, Nebr.)

The Valentine Police Department employs six officers.

It looks worse than it is. Though it’s still very bad, the fire is about 10 miles from my house, and would have to jump two rivers. The wind more or less cooperated on the 14th, it was much less windy than on the evening of the 13th. The main fire trended more southeast, away from town. We’re definitely not out of the woods but no evacuation orders are being called. Hot dry weather is the order of the weekend, no chance for rain until maybe Tuesday.

35
teleskiguy  Aug 15, 2020 • 1:20:15am

Here’s the start of the fire. It’s now over 15,000 acres burned. Police and firefighters say it might have been started by a blown tire with sparks flying from a rim or chains dragging from a trailer as there were multiple start points.

Just after we replaced the refrigerator that died our microwave died. The new microwave was installed today. I just reheated a cup of coffee and 60 seconds brought it up to tongue burning temperature. I would say it is much more efficient than the old one. We’ve replaced or repaired (furnace - twice) all our appliances except the dishwasher, dryer and garbage disposal in the last 2 years. I expect them to fail by the end of the year because why not it’s 2020 and everything is fucked!

Womp womp, tots & pears, etc. -

President Trump’s personal wealth took a $300 million nosedive in the past year, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, meaning his fortune has plummeted by a whopping 10 percent since his inauguration. It’s the sharpest annual fall recorded for Trump in the past five years, Bloomberg News reports, and is largely down to the raging coronavirus pandemic’s effect on property markets. There have been huge declines in the value of the president’s landmark buildings at 40 Wall Street and Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue, and his treasured golf courses have also lost value over the past year. Both the White House and the Trump Organization refused the chance to comment on the president’s staggering losses. His net worth now stands at $2.7 billion, according to the Billionaires Index.

re: #50 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

That’s true. I figure most of “his” properties are actually owned by LLCs in which “investors” can launder their money. Trump certainly likes to point to these properties as his wealth - when he most likely owns only a portion of them at best. On top of this, to the extent he is an owner of a property, said property is secured by mortgage debt, so his net worth is probably quite minimal. Everything is stacked inside a veritable Matrushka doll of LLCs and investors, which makes it quite difficult to know if he even has a positive net worth, other than a wild guess.

The International Association of Chiefs of Police “asked for each candidate’s views on nine specific areas of crime or other issues that impact law enforcement, and the solutions they planned to provide. The chiefs asked how they would address violent crime, violence against women, hate crimes, homegrown violent extremism, opioid abuse and traffic safety,” the Washington Post reports.

“Biden’s response on the nine issues stretched over four pages, calling for assault weapons bans, massive investment in drug treatment programs and investing $300 million in the COPS program to hire more officers and deputies.”

“Trump did not respond to the nine issues and provided no explanation

Lukashenko’s ongoing woes are giving Pootie-Poot a migraine. Heh.

Russia’s options to preserve influence in its closest ally are narrowing as Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko’s grip on power slips amid swelling popular protests against his 26-year rule.

Some in the Kremlin fear Lukashenko could be forced from office, according to three people familiar with the situation, leaving Russia scrambling to maintain its special relationship with a vital buffer against the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Others see his brutal crackdown on opponents as counterproductive but ultimately likely to keep him in power at least for a while, said another person close to the Kremlin.

“No one is sure anymore about Lukashenko’s future,” said Fyodor Lukyanov, head of the Council on Foreign and Defense Policy, a research group that advises the Kremlin. “He may succeed in the short term in suppressing the protests but there’s a big problem here.”

___________________________________

Some in the Russian elite have called for military intervention along the lines of the 2014 move into Ukraine, but Zatulin said that would be a “monumental stupidity.”

Putin doesn’t want to provide military help for Lukashenko because it would fuel anti-Russian sentiment in Belarus and would be too risky, but if the elite splits Russia could give the green light to his ouster by elements in the security establishment, said Gleb Pavlovsky, a former Kremlin adviser.

“Lukashenko no longer controls Belarus, he controls only the security forces, but will they remain loyal? It’s not clear,” he said. “All this is a headache for Putin.”

Impressive, 637 miles!

Yeah, impressive, but not awesomely so: According to the linked article, those Hyundai models set those records driving on a closed track, under controlled conditions, in a low-power mode. Oh, and did so at an average speed of 30 mph (21 mph). So not really a “real-life” test.

But still a good harbinger of things to come: If the “range” issue with electrics can now be made competitive, there are only the “charging network” and “charging time” problems to be overcome. Though the latter, I understand, involves basic principles of physics, so maybe not so easy.

Why the automakers never came up with even standard charging connectors is mind-blowing in of itself. It’s a shame they didn’t use the propane tank model where you can just swap one out for another as the connectors were all standardized.

This is kind of huge. Jim Wallis has been directing the agenda of the “progressive” “left” Christians for a very long time now through Sojourners magazine. From Hemant Mehta, Friendly Atheist:

The Christian magazine Sojourners has replaced its founder Jim Wallis after shit hit the fan regarding his handling of an article criticizing the Catholic Church’s racism.

As I posted a few days ago, the controversy involved an article first published on the magazine’s website in late June (and in the print magazine later), all about how some Catholics had openly embraced White Nationalism without facing any sort of real rebuke from the Church itself. For example, while priests will deny communion to pro-choice politicians, there’s no word of the Church symbolically rejecting members like Steve Bannon and Kellyanne Conway, who have promoted Donald Trump’s repeated acts of bigotry.

Wallis didn’t read that article before it went up, but he quickly took it down, saying the piece “was offensive and should not have been published.” It turned out Catholic organizations complained about the piece to him personally and Wallis wilted under the pressure. He later clarified in a series of updates that the piece “would jeopardize relationships” between his organization and Church leaders — in other words, an essay that fairly criticized another religion could get in the way of his non-profit’s work. As far as journalism goes, those are two worlds that should never interfere with each other.

Two staffers of color quit the magazine in protest, as did three columnists. Several reliable freelancers said they would stop submitting pieces.

And now Wallis will no longer be running the magazine he’s been in charge of since 1971, though he will still be president of the Sojourners organization.

friendlyatheist.patheos.com

I’ve been reading Sojo on and off since about 1983 and so this is really kind of huge. Sojo has such an outsized influence, it’s hard to overestimate. That said, I really have to point out that Wallis had to be dragged kicking and screaming into seeing that LGBTQ rights were human rights and his past views on abortion can scarcely be separated from that of the average anti-abortion radical. (It’s hard to tell what his current views are and I’ve got to sign on for work in 10 minutes, so no time to search it out.)

Anyway, something to watch.

I’ll be honest, I originally thought Sojourners had published something that was anti-Catholic, which was a surprise. But the article wasn’t available to say and I was willing to give Wallis some room on it. Then I learned that the article was actually more along the lines of “there is unrestrained racism in some pockets of the American Catholic church and the hierarchy is basically looking the other way. Oh, and the racism is longstanding and deep-seated.” That put more nuance on the situation. Then an editor resigned very publicly and noisily, which caused the shit to hit the fan. And now Wallis has resigned after it became clear some Catholic allies had approached him off to the side to urge him to pull this truthful article because it was embarrassing to the hierarchy.

What. a. mess.

(We won’t go into the lack of ethics since apparently lacking integrity in public office or public service is not a crime.) So the cogs will get the jail time and fines while the upper folk skate to make money on the talk circuit and FOX.

Well, let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Lukashenko could “invite” the Russian Army in to help “stabilize the situation”.

There was an article somewhere yesterday about it, and I think part of the problem is that Putin can’t afford to send any troops. Plus, it doesn’t look like Lukashenko has all of the government on his side.

Yeah, pulling a “Czechoslovakia ‘68” probably isn’t going to play well in post-Iron Curtain Europe: It’s probably much more likely that - should protests/unrest continue - Lukashenko will rely first and foremost on his own domestic military/security forces to “restore order”, i.e. clamp down hard on any threats to his regime. And this is a Russian-style regime: that clamp can get quite unpleasantly tight.

Of course, Lukashenko can always appeal to the public: after all, 80% of them voted for him…. ////

Fuck Newspeak. It’s just another cog in the Moonie Brainwashing machine.

It Took Newsweek Three Days and a Staff Revolt to Apologize for Kamala Harris Birtherism Op-Ed

AND these assholes did the usual half-assed apology job…

Newsweek Editor-in-Chief Nancy Cooper and the magazine’s recently hired opinion editor, Trump-backing conservative activist and attorney Josh Hammer, apologized on Friday after nearly a week of defending a right-wing law professor’s op-ed questioning Sen. Kamala Harris’ U.S. citizenship and her eligibility to be Joe Biden’s running mate.

Hammer—a former Ted Cruz aide and member of the Federalist Society and the right-leaning Claremont Institute, who joined Newsweek in May after writing for Ben Shapiro’s Daily Wire—declined to comment, telling The Daily Beast in a brief phone conversation, “I’m not interested in speaking. Thank you.”

And then hung up the phone.

Several of Newsweek’s journalists were alarmed by Hammer’s arrival because of his hyper-partisan leanings—and especially because former Trump adviser and Breitbart CEO Steve Bannon, perceived as a Hammer ally, apparently continues to hope that he will one day buy the magazine.

So the cogs will get the jail time and fines while the upper folk skate to make money on the talk circuit and FOX.

Trump’s attacks on the Postal Service deserve sustained, red-alert coverage from the media, wonderful Margaret Sullivan, WaPo

Dan Gillmor, co-founder of the News Co/Lab at Arizona State University’s journalism school, told me he sees a need for news organizations to put aside their competitive urges.
“Some stories demand collaboration, and this one is a plain example. The nation’s newsrooms — working together and, crucially, with the help of the public in communities around the nation — could find out and explain what is going on, at the macro and micro level,” he said.

Speaking of the Catholic Church, the bishop of the diocese of Sacramento recently excommunicated a priest. Basically the excommunication of Jeremy Leatherby was because he a) exercised his priestly faculties when he was already under suspension, AND b)because he refused to pray for the current pope, Francis, and instead substituted the name of the previous pope, Benedict into the canon of the mass, and c) refused to pray for the local bishop, aka the guy who has now excommunicated him.

These points require a bit of elucidation. The background of point a) is that Leatherby had been suspended from the priesthood in 2016 due to some truly skeevy, disgusting and predatory action towards women and one woman in particular. If you want to get into the weeds on this one, here’s an article. And the weeds are MIGHTY THICK.

catholicherald.co.uk

Points b) and c) require the background that Leatherby had started saying mass again because he thought the people should not be denied the Eucharist even though, you know, *pandemic*. In the process of saying these masses, he replaced Francis’ name with Benedict’s because he apparently does not believe Francis is the current pope. Oh, and dissing the bishop by not saying his name

And given that the Catholic Church is a huge organization with many, many people and many, many moving parts, it should come as absolutely no surprise that Leatherby has supporters who think he’s being persecuted.

Again, you can get into the weeds with this article if you like. ncronline.org

Two sites that amplify hoaxes given special treatment at Trump’s briefings despite restrictions, by Paul Farhi, WaPo

Under an agreement between the White House press office and the group representing reporters, the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA), the limit was eventually set at 14, a number that allows reporters to maintain an appropriate distance from each other. News organizations that want in on the briefings have to wait their turn; the WHCA set up a rotation system, giving each outlet a shot about once every 10 days.

Gateway Pundit and Epoch Times both jumped the line with the White House’s blessing starting on Thursday. They joined conservative cable network One America News (OAN), whose correspondent was initially barred by the WHCA but has been granted an exemption by Trump since April.

So they were not supposed to even be in there on the approved rotation.

And now Wallis has resigned after it became clear some Catholic allies had approached him off to the side to urge him to pull this truthful article because it was embarrassing to the hierarchy.

What. a. mess.

So I actually met Wallis about thirty years ago.

My (small, Christian) high school did this thing where late fall they would call off classes for the week and send us all off all over the place in small groups for real-world learning/service. Older students got to go farther, do more interesting things. Senior year (?) I got to go with a group of 8 or so to DC and do a bunch of stuff that swung between general student tourism and middle-lefty activism.

One of those things was visiting Sojourners headquarters. I was aware of the magazine since I spent way too much time in the school library. And we got to talk with a few people there.

I did not come away impressed. The magazine seemed to be about the idea of liberal Christianity for the sake of being that role, without having any strong commitment to anything that would mean. I don’t remember the precise words of the conversation after all this time, but I remember that he was moaning about the rise of the frothing conservatives and the slow decline of Sojourners’ readership, yet I couldn’t really see the separation between him and the cons on any specific issue that came up.

I suppose they found more readers in the years that followed to survive this long. I haven’t been in a religious library in a couple of decades (and I wouldn’t go in a “christian” bookstore for anything now) so I guess I’d sort of assumed it had imploded by now.

I don’t want to say that all christians are bad people - I really don’t believe that. But there are some large groups (and the American Catholic hierarchy is an important one) that you simply cannot associate with without compromising yourself.

August 15, Minsk / Corr. BELTA /. At the first request, Russia will provide comprehensive assistance to ensure the security of Belarus in the event of external military threats. The head of state Alexander Lukashenko said this today at a meeting at the Center for Strategic Management in the Ministry of Defense of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

“When it comes to the military component, we have an agreement with the Russian Federation within the framework of the Union State and the CSTO. These are the moments that fit this agreement. Therefore, today I had a long, detailed conversation with the President of Russia about the situation. I must say, me I was even somewhat surprised - I am absolutely devoted to what is happening, “the Belarusian leader noted.

“And we (Vladimir Putin. - BelTA note) agreed: at our very first request, comprehensive assistance will be provided to ensure the security of the Republic of Belarus,” Alexander Lukashenko said.

Based on the actual reports, it’s probably 5,100, not 5000, but I’m sure that over the next week it will drop to 5000, to prove they have it under control. Eventually the actual cases may catch up to them, but dictatorships have many ways to manipulate statistics so that the truth never reaches light.

I wonder if the disease is traveling through their military, maybe making them less anxious for interventions elsewhere.

I read an excerpt from a historical research journal once, about the flight log of a WWII Lancaster bomber pilot. He was the experienced commander of a crew of eight men flying bombing missions over Germany. He “celebrated” his coming-of-age 21st birthday on one such mission, noting that he was the oldest man on board his aircraft that day.

He did not survive the war.

My dad made it to 22, flying 2 1/2 credited missions out of Parham (Framlingham).
