It’s a little over two months to the election and a bit less than six months until Inauguration Day. Maybe Putin reckons this might well represent his last opportunity to consolidate territorial gains in eastern Ukraine - move those forces in there and grab as much as they can (ideally, they can make it to the Dnieper River) and then hunker down for the winter months and by next spring, you’ve created a fait accompli, a divided Ukraine with the Dniper as a natural border.

That makes sense from Russia’s POV. Instead, she waited 7 months to start Impeachment Inquiry hearings, when she had a good set of witnesses lined up and relevant committees got their ducks in a row. Leading to weeks of compelling live-televised hearings, and the Senate punted, and suddenly half a dozen Republican senators found their re-election much less likely.

Trust in Nancy. She knows how to math, and she knows how to calendar.

The Post Office has brought out some really cool Forever stamps.

In the past year I have picked up sheets of Star Trek stamps, Halloween Stamps, 2 flavors of Hanukah stamps, Cherry Blossom Festival stamps, Solar Eclipse Stamps that change color, and Dragon stamps. The dragon stamps look like some sort of landscape art until you look closely and realize that there is a dragon in there.

One of my neighbors has 3 German Shepherds so I picked up a sheet of the “Military Working Dogs” and gave it to them recently.

Two other neighbors have started keeping small groups of chickens, but I have not yet seen any chicken stamps.

Apparently though, keeping chickens is an ‘in’ thing locally right now. I did mention to the neighbors my mother’s experience with chickens from her aunt’s farm outside of St Joseph Missouri. That chickens are either pets or dinner. It is a bad idea to try to make them both.

Since my brother is not mass marketing eggs he puts up with reduced production from his small flock (6-9 hens). Usually adds a few pullets per year to replace losses. And doesn’t “stew” non/low producers (or make chicken pies from them). He gets sufficient eggs to keep himself supplied plus gives/sells a dozen here and there to people.

Yep. My brother puts in a obstacle course when he has young chickens added to the flock. Something they can dodge through when chased that the older/still slightly larger chickens can’t navigate as well. He’ll also temporarily divide the sleeping area of the coop for a while when the pullets go in there.

Well, who knows.

She is the third person in my tree that I know was executed. but so far the only person beheaded for being a witch. Two great-great-something grand fathers were hung.

It appears that witch trials were quite the thing in Norway in the 17th century. In my aunt’s case, both her father and brother were parish priests, but they had already died before she was tried and executed.

It appears that witch trials were quite the thing in Norway in the 17th century.

Sweden also. One of the more infamous trials were the Torsåker witch trials - that led to 71 people (65 women and six men) being beheaded and their bodies burned on a single day.

Two boys were employed to point out the witches, apparently by noticing an “invisible mark” on the accused’s forehead. After the trials and executions, those two boys were found with their throats cut from ear to ear; it’s presumed by most they were killed by the relatives of the “witches” who’d been executed.

A legit point of criticism of Harris is that the bank settlement she touted in the past as one of her landmark achievements was pretty much dogshit and fell far short of what she promised at the outset. Over promise and under deliver by 3x or so, and then take a victory lap is not a good look.

Still, none of that matters because Biden/Harris are running against Trump. Trump can’t be allowed to win again.

If they’re UV-C (aka far-UV) sterilising lights you need to be out of the room when they’re on, also remove pets, kids and anything that would normally fade or be damaged by really really bright sunlight, stuff like unstabilised plastics, computer screens, TVs etc. Properly-rated glasses will protect your eyes but UV-C will cause sunburn on exposed skin, too much will cause skin cancers.

Basically, UV-C lamps aka Awesome Flesh-Burning Death Lamps are as dangerous as fuck and amateurs who have to ask questions like you just did shouldn’t play around with them. UV-A and UV-B lamps are less dangerous but they don’t sterilise worth a damn.

In ancient days Nikon marketed a lens to image in the UV, the Quartz Nikkor 105. Several elements were fused silica. It was rare and hellishly expensive.

For some strange reason (COVID-19 cough cough) there’s been an upsurge in interest in UV-sterilising kit and the Far Eastern manufacturers have gotten on the bandwagon selling lamps and bags which reputedly are UV-C rated. It’s actually rare for the LED-based units to actually produce UV-C (about 250nm wavelength), they are usually UV-A or UV-B disco-style blacklights with a wavelength of about 350nm. This is a lot less dangerous but pretty much useless for sterilising purposes. Genuine sterilising units nearly all use mercury vapour tubes like the one Big Clive in the video I linked to was demonstrating — basically if you smell burning flesh when it’s working it’s the real thing as it destroys dead skin and skin bacteria.

Genuine UV-C LEDs do exist but they tend to be very expensive but sticker price on these kinds of units does not guarantee actual UV-C performance. You can test them with green bananas, a few seconds exposure to real UV-C will cause the banana’s skin to turn yellow.

Remember also the difference between bacteria and viruses — the size difference alone means you have to use a lot more sterilising light to destroy a virus because it’s much smaller. Most UV-C lamps are intended to kill bacteria like E. coli and Legionnaire’s Disease in water supplies and the like, they’re not really rated for viruses.

Having come from farm country in Illinois and Indiana one thing that surprised me when I lived near Richmond, VA was the existence of Black-owned farms. They simple don’t exist in Illinois and Indiana. Black people migrating to your part of Indiana were basically chased through the state to make sure they didn’t settle down outside of urban areas. So, yeah, high probability of some racism there.

I read about the Great Migration a few years back. The legacies of slavery and Jim Crow are very real and still relevant in the 21st century.

I made two predictions after 2016 - one, that he would win again in 2020 easily, and two, that he would have more voters in 2020 than the 62 million in 2016. The first may turn out to be wrong - given the naked voter suppression tactics, there won’t be anything easy about the win. I still stand by the second, though. Four more years of Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, and FOX indoctrination will only make more Trumpers.

And another thing that NYT article pointed out was that most respectable pollsters actually have learned a lesson from their miscalculations in 2016, and aren’t taking stuff for granted this time round.
And another factor they point out is that unlike four years ago, there’s no real movement to third parties: Libertarians and Greens are polling in the fractions: a sudden shift (from either end of the spectrum) is considered really unlikely this year.
It’s North Carolina, though: it will likely be close: but it does illustrate the (dire) need not to get overconfident, and work away ceaselessly til Nov. 3rd.

It never was. What happened is a lot of those midwestern towns got more diversity and they couldn’t handle it. I had an UN of classmates from the start. Had classmates with parents from all over and I attribute that greatly along with my own pedigree and now extended family how I view the world. One of my childhood best friends was from Peru as is my sil and my niece’s godfather is black. Plus my dad worked with many immigrants as an equal as have I.

We’re just as determined. I’m just trying to tell you and others that healthy optimism is okay. We can’t live in the wreckage of 2016. We have to get on our feet and that’s why I’ve spent the past three years immersing myself locally. We haven’t always won. I still have a homophobe troll delegate in Richmond but I also have a great champion of transgender people in Washington and a state Senator in Richmond who isn’t writing letters praising Assad.

Yeah cautious optimism. I just ask people not go but 2016 when they see Biden beating Trump. Trump as challenger and Trump as President are two different games. We have to be ready for anything but I don’t want people despairing too. I think we can get a repudiating landslide this fall. I really do.

I made two predictions after 2016 - one, that he would win again in 2020 easily, and two, that he would have more voters in 2020 than the 62 million in 2016. The first may turn out to be wrong - given the naked voter suppression tactics, there won’t be anything easy about the win. I still stand by the second, though. Four more years of Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, and FOX indoctrination will only make more Trumpers.

Well, except that no mail service will make them poor and sick (no prescriptions, no social security) and covid will make (some of) them dead. I note that registered republicans’ numbers are plummeting.

Meanwhile some critical constituencies (e.g. suburban women) are abandoning him.

Also too, he doesn’t have four more years, he has less than three months. Still a hard fight, but we have a chance to win it. Start now.

The good news: The fire is being blown south due to a northerly flow away from population centers. I woke up to clear skies for the first time since Monday. The bad news: The fire is still 0% contained and grew another 6,000 acres yesterday, to 25,000 acres. A guy I knew from primary school days, his family’s ranch (one of the last family owned ranches in the state) is imperiled.

Just saw a John Cornyn ad. It feated a woman who was talking about school, which flashed to a video of a full classroom with no masks. I was washing dishes, so I didn’t hear what she was talking about, but I’m assuming it was about returning to normal. At the end, the woman and John were talking but had masks on. The woman’s name was Becky.

Having come from farm country in Illinois and Indiana one thing that surprised me when I lived near Richmond, VA was the existence of Black-owned farms. They simple don’t exist in Illinois and Indiana. Black people migrating to your part of Indiana were basically chased through the state to make sure they didn’t settle down outside of urban areas. So, yeah, high probability of some racism there.

Reminder that Indiana was one of the states where the KKK got control of the state government back in the 1920s.

Well, just more evidence (which OUGHT to be obvious, but as far as a lot of the Internet is concerned, ain’t), that the election is far from a “gimme” at this point: and that a lot of good-old-fashioned national campaigning (though modified for the ongoing pandemic) is going to be needed to put this thing away on Nov. 3.

An interesting piece in today’s NYT about those “hidden” TRump voters the GOP seems to be relying on so much (article focusing on NC): the bad news is that they DO exist - the better news is that their numbers are unlikely to be as large as the Trumpsters are trying to hype. RTWT.

There are plenty of folks on Social Security that I deal with who boast of how much they love Trump. Last week I dealt with one who said she would be willing to take a bullet for him. “Trump won’t take our Social Security away. Pelosi will. Watch Fox News and see how Democrats are sabotaging Social Security and Medicare”

I have to listen to this shit and keep my mouth shut.

I get really annoyed when people act like ugly racism has only been a Southern thing. Lots of sundown clauses, defacto segregated neighborhoods, limited social advancement, etc up North.

Segregation was alive and well in Ambridge PA until the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Our Borough Pool was for whites only. Jews and “Colored” were “asked” to stay out.

The Penney’s store was for whites only. “Colored” and Jews were welcome at the Sears store.

Plenty of “clubs” and bars were “restricted” for whites only.

There was a backlash in the 1964 Democratic Presidential primary when there were lots of write-in votes for George Wallace. Wallace actually beat LBJ in my home precinct.

When I lived in the Pacific Northwest with my parents as a kid, the house they’d bought included a covenant that stated that it was forbidden to sell the house to a black person, a Jewish person or (oddly, I thought) a Catholic.

The Oregon State Constitution originally contained a “Whites-Only” clause.
