Yeeeep, my family visited this weekend and it was predictably miserable. The lowlights:

* My dad telling me he had to keep the car locked because he had his pistol in it;
* My dad and my father-in-law trash-talking Dr. Fauci (I had to physically leave the room before I ordered them to leave the premises at that);
* My dad complaining about Governor Holcomb of Indiana, intimating that he was coerced by a conspiracy of Democratic governors to alter his reopening plans rather than it being due to his not being a complete fucking dumb shit.

I should, but I can’t. We did do that once and it seemed to work, but I’m just not willing to deal with the confrontation (Mrs. Fish took care of it last time).

Satellite image of US shows that smoke from fires along the west coast blowing around, first the low level winds moving smoke to the west, and then high level winds blowing the smoke south. There are some clouds formed from the smoke too, and additional low level clouds (like around the Klamaths) that can confuse one with smoke, but the image is dramatic. Note also the long-running fire in southern Washington. The past few days have see a couple of large fires in northern Washington too, though today are not producing much smoke:

Image: goes16-truecolor-us.gif

Note also the strong low pressure center now in Utah. This is going to give us gusty winds here in California the next few days, which will be dangerous.

I have a German Short Haired Pointer. She’s now about 10 years old. Super athletic, but would plow through anything and everything, and has the scars to show it. That little hiccup wouldn’t have slowed my GSP down for a second. I remember one time I took her running through the woods. Everything seemed fine, until we got home and she started licking her front leg. I check her over only to find a quarter sized gash in her in her front leg down to the bone. She never limped, yelped, or otherwise notified me of an issue. I still can’t imagine how hard she must have hit something with her leg to cause that.

Gee, he says that like it’s a bad thing.

Trump is still operating off of what the “urban” and “suburban” populations looked like some time around 1972. He has no idea how diverse either of those things are today. Nor does he have any idea how much the lines have blurred outside of NYC (where the whole island thing makes it easier to differentiate).

It’s because Trump is a candidate that finally speaks and intends to do what the hateful right (religious or not) wants: racism, bigotry, and fantasy genocide.

That’s why the “base” hated the likes of Romney, who was very polished and proper on the outside. He did not resonate with the inner essence of the “base”, which frankly is as ugly as any throw-back group in history.

Glory, our goofy American-English coonhound, is the same way.
Even after she had her front leg amputated (after someone shot her), she never gave up(and was still jumping the four-foot high fence).
She’s going on 12-13 years old now (we’re not sure, but the vet figured she was maybe 2 years old when she showed up in January 2010). Had emergency surgery last Christmas for a bleeding tumor on her spleen (turned out to be two tumors) and her running the woods days are over, but that nose isn’t missing a scent when she’s lounging on the porch. She reaching the end, but says it’s still not time to go meet up with her best bud Daisy, the Jack Russell Terror, who went to the Rainbow Bridge first day of spring last year.

This is, in general, not a very smart strategy for Team Trump (unless they think they’re going to lose in November and are just trying to run out the clock). Feels like the sort of thing that can hurt the presidency a la Jones v Clinton back in the day.

The only other alternative is that he thinks going this way means the settlement funds will be paid out of the US Treasury…

No way was he acting on behalf of the ‘office of the president of the united states’ when he denied an assault that he as private-citizen was accused of from years earlier.

his statement was not made within the “course and scope” of his employment as President even if it was made from the podium with the seal on it.

Jerry Falwell Jr. apparently cannot keep his mouth shut.

Reuters article in question:

After this story was published, Jerry Falwell spoke by phone with Reuters. He said that “someone stole some pictures I took of my wife in the back yard. Topless. Big deal. OK?” But he said his endorsement of Trump had nothing to do with Cohen’s role in suppressing the racy photographs.

“It was no quid pro quo,” Falwell said. “There was no me supporting Trump because of whatever Michael was doing.”

Falwell said he endorsed Trump, at Cohen’s behest, because Falwell “believed that a businessman needed to run this country.”

Toward the end of the call, Becki Falwell, who has not commented on the Cohen book or the photographs, could be heard urging her husband to cut short the conversation with Reuters. “Hang up the goddamn phone,” she told her husband. “Hang up the phone, Jerry!”

Video

Re: “Eyes on the street” effect. When I worked for an armored car company in the 70s, people were amazed that we would deliver millions of dollars to rural banks by simply parking in front and carrying the loot in through the front door. They thought there had to be a secret concealed door with a super-secret codeword and special knock, etc. I explained that rural banks were usually on the town square, and there were a lot of people around during business hours. One of them might be a robber but they couldn’t all be robbers. Being rural Texas, a good percentage of the non-robbers were probably armed as well. It was a powerful deterrent and the industry’s collective experience bore this out. Even Bonnie and Clyde never hit an armored car, at least not a bank transport one.
We could do essentially the same thing at big downtown urban banks, though not usually from the street since they had driveways specifically for deliveries (still very public though). Even in those days, though, we wouldn’t try this at suburban banks. They had, if not a secret door, at least a locked one in back of the building, and their guard had to come out and stand watch before we unloaded. It wasn’t that suburbanites were more likely to rob banks, it was that there was probably no one around but us and the potential robbers.

Though one shouldn’t discount that it also means the Trump Org stops bleeding money on lawyers for his defense. Suggestion to the Biden campaign: Make a statement that his future AG’s first job next year will be dropping Trump as a “client,” followed by sending the Trump Org a bill for providing his “defense.”

Sounds good. Definitely make it a point to talk about how Barr politicized DOJ to be Trump’s personal legal protection.

I was head over heals for Barbara Rush, who was best known for movies, but did quite a lot of TV work too, some of it pretty recent.

This is my favorite scene of her then-24-year-old self as Joyce Hendron in When Worlds Collide (1951). She is about to tell leading man Richard Derr “Oh, I don’t know,” in response to his question about whether she and her doctor boyfriend really intend to get married. This sets up the inevitable romantic triangle subplot that most of these movies seem to have. Her look, pitch, and tone were perfect for setting a young boy’s heart aflutter.

I was a bit amused, and annoyed, to see that one of the google searches for her is “Barbara Rush funeral.” In fact she is still with us at 93 and apparently quite active.

On the negative side, she is the mother of Fox News reader Claudia Cowan.

This is bananas.

The world is on the verge of 900,000 COVID deaths and the Trump administration is shutting down the USAID coronavirus task force.

This pandemic is not over, no matter how much Trump wants to pretend it is.

Based on figures in worldometer, the number of cases and deaths in the United States seem to be declining. Assuming this isn’t an artifact of under reporting by red states, it is possible that the pandemic is gradually losing its potency here. Certainly we’ve gained more skill and knowledge in treating patients, which may account for the decrease in mortality.

It is still a disgrace to close down the task force. The sole purpose of this action must be to conceal any damage this disease continues to inflict on our nation. Trump wants to focus on civil unrest and nothing else that happens under his watch.

I’ve been following the IHME projections out of the University of Washington. They’re not perfect (predicting the future is hard). But I’m satisfied that they’re more likely to be correct than me, or anyone I know. They’re projecting that the number of cases and deaths will be ramping up gradually for now, then more quickly thru October to the end of the year. They’re projecting that the number of deaths will more than double to over 400K by then.

Assuming this isn’t an artifact of under reporting by red states, it is possible that the pandemic is gradually losing its potency here. Certainly we’ve gained more skill and knowledge in treating patients, which may account for the decrease in mortality.

The decrease in mortality is in part due to improved treatment, but also due to better testing regimes in some areas that find more asymptomatic cases. This is why the death rate per case in places like New York are so much higher than other places - cases spread and spread until there was a sudden critical mass that resulted in a large death wave, and many asymptomatic or mild cases went undetected and untested.

Cases aren’t declining, though. Not meaningfully. The rate of exponential increase has dropped, but even with poor Labour Day weekend reporting, the US still added 30k cases today, which represents uncontrolled spread. Why the rate of increase is slowing may be for various reasons - underreporting, undertesting, but also simply better practices, masking, and the natural course of a pandemic.

It’s also the natural course of a pandemic, however, to have another wave, or two. I expect there will be a fall and winter wave, as there usually is in diseases like this. The ‘summer wave’ in the US was just spread to new hotspots in Florida, California and Texas.

They Hit Bottom And Kept Digging, Juanita Jean Herownself

There was a Trump Parade in New Braunfels, Texas. I spent many happy days of my childhood in New Braunfels tubing the Comal River and taking my own children back to build memories of their own.

New Braunfels has officially become the nastiest place in Texas.

They had a Trump parade that they call The Trump Train. That’s a thing in Texas, these parades. But this one was way beyond simply a thing.

The lead truck in the parade pulled a Black Lives Matter flag off the back bumper through town.

Reminding folks of what happened to James Byrd nearby. She said people lined the road and cheered. They must be rooted out, period.

re: #148 Hecuba’s daughter

Based on figures in worldometer, the number of cases and deaths in the United States seem to be declining. Assuming this isn’t an artifact of under reporting by red states, it is possible that the pandemic is gradually losing its potency here. Certainly we’ve gained more skill and knowledge in treating patients, which may account for the decrease in mortality.

It is still a disgrace to close down the task force. The sole purpose of this action must be to conceal any damage this disease continues to inflict on our nation. Trump wants to focus on civil unrest and nothing else that happens under his watch.

California is a big state, and our numbers are dropping by a lot (finally! and let’s hope the Labor Day holiday doesn’t set us back too much) — last week we were around/over 5,000 new cases per day, yesterday about 3,000, today 2,600. Northeastern states are following mask protocols, and even some of the southern states have had their noses rubbed in reality and are enforcing mask wearing. The places where the epidemic is raging unchecked are comparatively sparsely populated.

But yes, it’s not time to shut down the task force. The epidemic hasn’t lost its potency, the word on the best current way we now have to combat it has passed, in spite of our malevolent moron leaders.

This is the actual headline: Olympian Kerri Walsh Jennings apologizes for Instagram post saying she bravely went shopping with no mask

She is apologizing because she got called out. Full stop.

Jennings faced quick backlash, with one user responding to her post: “I’m a nurse and all healthcare workers are reusing PPE and we don’t have routine access to testing. We put ourselves at risk daily to care for patients the least that everyone else can do is social distance and wear a mask in public.”

Another user wrote, “This is incredibly selfish and ignorant.”

“To those I’ve upset so deeply, I am sorry,” Jennings wrote in a follow up post.

“To those who are open to hearing where I am coming from, I appreciate your openness and civility. To those in agreement, I appreciate you expressing your views. To those calling me dumb, selfish, privileged, bigoted, and racist and telling me that ‘you are better than this,’ I fully acknowledge that addressing such an emotional, layered, nuanced and polarizing topic on social media was not the smartest thing.”

Asshole. And a complete disappointment.

The problem with this: “To those calling me dumb, selfish, privileged, bigoted, and racist and telling me that ‘you are better than this,’ I fully acknowledge that addressing such an emotional, layered, nuanced and polarizing topic on social media was not the smartest thing.”

is that the issue of masking in public is not emotional, it is not layered, it is not nuanced, and it damn well shouldn’t be polarizing.

Masking in public during covid19 is entry-level civilization 101 (just like voting straight ticket D in every general election). Those who refuse to do so are barbarians.

I would love for someone to find a way to say that the DOJ doctrine is not law, and that you have to be found guilty to be pardoned. I suspect the challenge for that will take years and we’d better have replaced Thomas by then or the conservatives will declare it established law.

This is me theory. Pence will pardon trump or at least try. Pence will not look good doing this, but who knows if he cares. His career is over either way.

If Trump loses in November, the logical thing for him to do is take the federal crimes off the table with a plenary pardon from Pence.

However, this would require the most malignant narcissist of all time to admit defeat. IMO Trump would rather see the world burn than admit defeat on this scale. Trump’s term in office during the lame duck period is likely to be dominated by the necessity to keep the nuclear launch codes out of his tiny hands.

This drop isn’t a sudden thing, our numbers have been declining steadily since July. (Schools are not reopening in CA.) There’s a steeper dip in late July, followed by a hump, explained by a problem with reporting (lower numbers at first, made up by adding back the underreported later), but if you take the hump numbers and plug them into the dip, you get a nice, smooth and steady decline.

All those state charges floating around for old behavior, well, that’s another matter. And if he’s thinking straight, he’d better not plan on hanging around in Europe or a lot of the world because there’s a good case to be made for child kidnapping and genocide by his administration.

Yeah, my son-in-law has a very nice dual fuel, which I have used, but I really would prefer not to have to hook it up every so often to run whether I need it or not, and anything stored outdoors is subject to critters chomping on the gas hose. Good point. He was on the verge of losing the Governorship in Indiana in an election year, the Equivalent of Cuomo losing an election in a Presidential year in blue NY. There seems to be no groundswell for a 2024 bid. So Pence would have little to lose by granting Trump a pardon. Don’t worry about it, if you buy a generator Murphy’s law says you’ll never need it again. I bought a generator 9 years ago when an ice storm knocked out my power for over a weak, and haven’t needed it since. I fire it up every now and then just to make sure it still runs.
