What I really find interesting is the media at large isn’t even trying to lie about how the “skinny bill” has a chance of passage. All the talk is about what it will mean for the farcical “negotiations” between Meadows and Pelosi, with a bit of suggestion that it might serve some positive purpose for Senate Repubs facing tight reelection races.
Interesting observation in this reply to Nate’s tweet:
So in elections where there was an incumbent running for re-election (or, technically, in the case of Ford, election) the polls held out. If the incumbent was ahead, they won, if the challenger was ahead, they won. The misses came in open seat elections.
— Mike (@Rn_for_Fn) September 8, 2020
That actually makes a lot of sense, since an open-seat election can’t, by definition, be a direct referendum on the incumbent (which means it’s more likely to have a large pool of undecideds who in turn are more susceptible to last-minute developments, October surprises, etc).

As many as 1,000 Georgians may have cast ballots in the June primary both by mail and in person, Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said Tuesday, raising questions about how well poll workers in the state are enforcing safeguards.
Raffensperger’s office is investigating whether those who voted twice did so intentionally and whether two votes were actually counted in each case. Georgia’s June 9 primary was plagued by widespread problems with the delivery of mail ballots and long lines at the polls.
Raffensperger’s office acknowledged that many voters may have shown up in person because they were afraid that their mail ballots would not be counted.

I suggested the quickest way to get that package to me was for CenturyLink to put in an insurance claim for the lost modem.

Phewww… Finally caught up.
From last thread:
re: #237 calochortus
OT, but after the last couple days of repeated power outages, I’m kind of done with all that. Do any Lizards have experience with a battery/solar backup like a Yeti that is big enough to power a refrigerator? We could get a generator, but they’re noisy and require maintenance and having fuel around and it seems like a hassle.
I second the advice from the last thread, particularly the advice on getting propane. And on not needing it once you get it.
I have only used my snowblower a grand total of once since I bought it 5 years ago. And then mostly out of curiosity. My only advice from using it that one time: Ensure that you locate the Sunday paper and retrieve it from the snow before using the snow blower. Clearing the driveway with the snowblower took 15 minutes. Getting the Sunday paper out of the snowblower took almost 2 hours and proved fatal to the Sunday paper.
Anyway, here is what I found when I was researching power sources:
Good question! Sounds like you have answered the first question in the decision tree.
1. Decide whether you want to power the entire house, or just a small part of it.
If you want to power the whole house, get a qualified technician, do an energy audit to decide what circuits you want to power, install a transfer switch and install a standby generator. Having natural gas available to the house, as opposed to using gasoline or diesel is generally a plus. Assume at least 5k for the generator, another 1k for the transfer bar and an annual maintenance contract.
2. If not the whole house, decide whether you want to use the house circuitry for powering. If so, do the audit and install a transfer switch with an external plug.
3. If you are not going to use a transfer switch, assume that you are going to use extension cords since it is critical to run any generators outside for safety reasons. (Death from Carbon Monoxide poisoning can really put a dent on one’s day.) Probably a good idea to stage the extension cords before hand.
4. Look at the plates and instruction manuals on what you want to power. They will give you a good idea of what level of power you might need. Also, note that most appliances have a starting load that is much higher than the running load. And generators also are rated by both peak and expected loads. As a quick and dirty guess, newer fridges tend to use 100-400 watts per hour.
5. You may also wish to run a light or two and be able to power a computer or recharge a cell phone or laptop at the same time. Electric heaters, dryers, hot water heaters, electric stoves are all extremely high electricity users. Do not expect to be able to use a small generator to power them.
6. Most larger generators have both 20amp and 30 amp connections. Before you buy, ensure that the 30amp socket is the correct type for your use. (Iirc, there are at least 3 different types of 30 amp plugs.) Don’t ask I how I learned this…
7. Generators are basically lawn motor engines with power generating attachments.
Brand names are important. Honda is probably held in the highest regard, but also costs twice as much as other brands.
A second issue is that they are noisy. Although some are noisier than others. Consider whether your neighbors would appreciate it while it runs all night. And whether passerby, upon hearing the generator take a sudden liking to it.
Additional good things are an automatic low oil shutoff and a hour meter so you know how long it has run.
Most run on unleaded gas. This is easily available, but can clog up the carburetors if it is left in for too long. Also, particularly with ethanol additives, it can absorb enough water to not work well in gas engines.
Some generators (called dual fuel) can also handle propane. Propane has less energy than unleaded, but can store for much longer. Also, check on how much fuel you can store and where. Some municipalities are decidedly unenthusiastic regarding homeowners storing huge amounts of gasoline in their house.
8. Inverter generators are best used for sensitive electronics, like computers and some medical equipment, that needs a very clean electricity source. (They generate ‘pure sign waves’ rather than ‘modified sine waves’.)
9. Generators are very heavy and bulky, it is probably wise to ensure that you have a place to store them and a way to move them from storage to where you will use them. Also, figure out beforehand how you are going to run them in heavy rain, sleet, snow, etc. Running them in the garage is a bad idea.
10. Battery systems…
A. Goal Zero Yeti is the best known and just came out in the past month with a new series of portable power systems. There are multiple other companies as well. And there are new companies are entering the market on a weekly basis.
B. A lot of the systems are 12volt based and converting from 12v to 120v costs power, reducing the available power from the battery.
C. When researching a battery system, check recharging time. A lot of the Yeti systems took 12 hours or more to recharge. And unless you live in the desert southwest, planning on solar charging may not be very satisfying.
11. What I have -
I first purchased a Goal Zero Yeti 1000 from Costco some years ago. The wall charger that it came with it takes about 18 hours to charge it fully. (60 watts from the wall socket to fill 1000 watts of the battery.) I later purchased a fast charger that can cut charging time down to between 4 and 5 hours.)
The Goal Zero Yeti 1000 has the advantage that it can be used indoors and is quiet. Btw the Yeti 1000 weighs 40lbs.
I also have a Champion 100204 dual fuel generator, again purchased from Costco. (Max is 2800 watts on propane and 3100 on gas, but I am planning for a 25% load over the long term.) Like you, I plan on running it to power the refrigerator for a short term outage. Basically 4 hours on out of 24 to keep the fridge cold. (And recharge the Yeti. But I guess that I will have to watch tv in the dark.(joke) By the way, the generator weighs approx 100lbs.
Hope this helps a bit.

I get your point. There are plenty of combinations that can certainly give one a headache.
Four years ago, FFVCS pulled off the equivalent of an inside straight flush. Based on the current numbers, it would need a 2-card draw for a royal flush to win this time.
Going with 334-204 at this moment, with the hope that it winds up closer to 360 for Biden.
