Bob Woodward Book: Trump Says He Deliberately Lied About the Coronavirus Threat Even Though He Knew How Bad It Was

Politics • Views: 20,681

Donald Trump knew how deadly the COVID-19 virus was in January.

But he lied to the public for months afterward, downplaying the severity and predicting it would magically disappear.

Matthew Pottinger, the deputy national security adviser, … told the president that after reaching contacts in China, it was evident that the world faced a health emergency on par with the flu pandemic of 1918, which killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide.

Ten days later, Trump called Woodward and revealed that he thought the situation was far more dire than what he had been saying publicly.

“You just breathe the air and that’s how it’s passed,” Trump said in a Feb. 7 call. “And so that’s a very tricky one. That’s a very delicate one. It’s also more deadly than even your strenuous flu.”

“This is deadly stuff,” the president repeated for emphasis.

At that time, Trump was telling the nation that the virus was no worse than a seasonal flu, predicting it would soon disappear, and insisting that the U.S. government had it totally under control. It would be several weeks before he would publicly acknowledge that the virus was no ordinary flu and that it could be transmitted through the air.

Trump said he lied to the public because he “didn’t want to cause a panic.” But we all know that’s bullshit; Donald Trump couldn’t care less about causing panics. He lives for causing panics.

He was concerned about one thing: his re-election. And he thought he could lie his way out of this crisis like he’s lied his way out of everything else his entire life. But the virus wasn’t listening to his lies.

Bob Woodward has the audio recordings.

Full story: Bob Woodward book: In Trump interviews for ‘Rage,’ president says he downplayed coronavirus threat.

I’m really tired of all these books with revelations about how awful trump is and their proof of it. Where in the actual fuck were these people at the beginning of the year as coronavirus started taking more and more lives? So they could line their pockets with book sale money? And the fucked up thing is all these damned books will be best sellers and the people who wrote them get to be heroes. I’m fucking pissed about this. Woodruff should have released the damned tapes months ago and let us know. But no. Money. These authors are shitty humans, I’m not spending a dime on anything they have written. Fuck them.

He downplayed it because he hoped someone would fix the problem for him…and then he could take credit for it.

Unfortunately for him, that didn’t happen.

From previous thread. The first trailer for Denis Villeneuve‘s version of Dune has appeared, and it features a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Eclipse” from Dark Side of the Moon.

re: #181 Dr Lizardo

Seems like Villeneuve did an homage to the Alejandro Jodorowsky’s version - he intended for Pink Floyd to write the soundtrack.

That makes me wonder about something that I always found a bit odd about David Lynch’s version- that the soundtrack was largely by rock band Toto, with some ambient bits by the Eno bothers.

I’m now wondering if Lynch knew about Jodorowsky’s idea to use Floyd for the soundtrack, and tried to go with this idea for his adaptation? Except, of course, Roger Waters-era Floyd had broken up by this time, so he arranged for Toto to do the loud bits, and Roger and Brian Eno to do the quiet bits?

Quite a few have burned themselves out and disappeared, actually — mostly strains of some “umbrella” disease, like influenza ( e.g. the 1918 version). Leprosy — Hansen’s disease — suddenly became almost not contagious around the end of the middle ages (outside of the tropics, and even there, it was less serious).

That’s no reason to sit on your ass and hope this one will just go away.

The Black Plague and Spanish Flu basically ravaged enough of the population that they have become too small to have a significant impact. H1N1 followed a similar route only because the Obama administration did just about everything correctly; that’s why there was no further vaccine development.

There’s a huge difference between not inciting panic and actively encouraging people to risk their lives. The smallest of steps (wear a mask, social distance) would have saved innumerable lives.

The “not to create panic” falls completely flat. Completely.

From mistermix over at Balloon Juice:

I was too busy with grown cops throwing tantrums in Rochester to comment on yesterday’s Cuomo Show. The backstory for this episode is that Cuomo has been low key (well, as low key as Cuomo gets) passive-aggressively fucking with the NYPD and their babyish ways. The NYPD (38,000 officers) is doing essentially no enforcement of COVID mandates, while the New York County Sheriff (150 Officers) has been doing the bulk of the enforcement (example here), along with a task force comprised of State Liquor Authority agents (20 or so) and State Troopers. That task force makes an impressive number of visits to bars (5,981 during the last week in August), and has cited a few (35 during that week in August, for example).

Yesterday, Cuomo upped the ante by refusing to allow resumption of indoor dining in New York City until there’s an enforcement plan in place. Or, as the New York Post put it (not gonna link), “Bill de Blasio and Andrew Cuomo Wish Death on NYC Restaurants”. The only real enforcement that can take place is via the NYPD, and apparently they’re all hiding in their rooms with their favorite plushies working through their feelings.

Whatever you think of Cuomo, his enormous ego is very much tied into this graph and our sub-1% positive rate:

** insert graph about how NY is at < 1% infection rate **

And that graph is in danger , especially with schools re-opening, so he’s digging in on NYC restaurants until the NYPD steps up. As far as I’m concerned, this is fine. I’ve just spent 6 weeks in a state where the governor only cared about how far she could climb up Trump’s asshole, so it’s hard to express just how happy I am to have Cuomo running the show, instead of Dollar Store Sarah Palin.

Also, I wonder just how much good will the cops think they have in the bank on this one. New York has witnessed some true heroism from medical personnel who have died fighting this fucking virus, and most of them don’t have anything approaching the pension and/or union protections afforded to the average street cop. When these motherfuckers get defunded, I hope they have plenty of kleenex to wipe away their tears, because they won’t have my shoulder to cry on.

The flaw of the gLibertarian ideology is that they don’t consider the potential for bad actors. Like they broadly understand the concept of “fraud” but don’t understand that there are ways to limit it. I mean, there’s a reason why Hamilton made the point that the opposite of tyranny isn’t freedom, but license (or as we’d call it today, “anarchy”) and that the point of government was to establish and maintain ordered liberty.

I went to the grocery store earlier and my headlights came on automatically, as apparently did every light in the neighborhood that’s on a photo cell.

This is a view towards the northwest. Normally we see San Francisco some 30 miles to the north. This morning we’re lucky to be seeing maybe 3 miles. The saving grace is that most of the smoke is quite high so the air quality is crappy but not horrific. But it seems to be getting darker by the minute, so maybe the asteroid is getting closer?

Normally, I would agree, in the sense that it would be an attempt to shine a light on past crimes during an election cycle in order to influence voters to change course.

However, in this case, it’s different. The coronavirus response was an urgent public health crisis even at the time. Lives of US citizens were, and now even more, at stake depending on the government*’s response. This is not a normal situation that one can or should be keeping a lid on. Not acting, or postponing action, is quite frankly a dereliction of duty in this case.

Greetings from “sunny” CA. It’s 10:40 a.m. and I need to have my keyboard lit up to see what I’m typing because there is a layer of clouds/fog overridden by about 4 layers of smoke from every fire in the state.
I went to the grocery store earlier and my headlights came on automatically, as apparently did every light in the neighborhood that’s on a photo cell.

[Embedded content]

This is a view towards the northwest. Normally we see San Francisco some 30 miles to the north. This morning we’re lucky to be seeing maybe 3 miles. The saving grace is that most of the smoke is quite high so the air quality is crappy but not horrific. But it seems to be getting darker by the minute, so maybe the asteroid is getting closer?

It’s about the same here in the East Bay, where it looks like the fake sepia toning they always add to movies in Mexico except yellower. There was a light bit of dust everywhere outside in the morning, but the AQI is still only 70, not the 150+ it was a few days back.

Mike Pence is planning to attend a fundraiser hosted by QAnon adherents: report

apnews.com

Vice President Mike Pence and top officials from President Donald Trump’s campaign are slated to attend a Montana fundraiser next week hosted by a couple who have expressed support for the QAnon conspiracy theory, according to an event invitation obtained by The Associated Press and a review of social media postings.

The hosts of the fundraiser, Caryn and Michael Borland, have shared QAnon memes and retweeted posts from QAnon accounts, their social media activity shows. The baseless conspiracy theory posits that Trump is fighting entrenched enemies in the government and also involves satanism and child sex trafficking.

In other words, it’s a gathering of mainstream Republicans…

Normally, I would agree, in the sense that it would be an attempt to shine a light on past crimes during an election cycle in order to influence voters to change course.

However, in this case, it’s different. The coronavirus response was an urgent public health crisis even at the time. Lives of US citizens were, and now even more, at stake depending on the government*’s response. This is not a normal situation that one can or should be keeping a lid on. Not acting, or postponing action, is quite frankly a dereliction of duty in this case.

I see your point, but let’s be realistic. If Woodward’s tapes were made public as soon as he had them, how would it have improved the Federal response to covid19?

The only path to improving the Federal response to covid19 is to start with removing Trump and the only path to removing Trump is via the November election.

Fuck them.

Fuck them.

The hardcopy books will all be in the remainder pile at bookstores in a few months. I’d make a point of pirating the digital versions if I could be bothered. (Right, I’m going to wade through 200 pages of filler to get to the “good parts”. Most books written by pols are shit.)

93
Charles Johnson  Sep 9, 2020 • 11:11:07am

To be fair, Woodward’s book deals with things that happened just a few months ago. It takes a lot of time to write, proof and fact-check a book like this.

I agree that people like John Bolton and Michael Cohen deserve the anger for holding back what they knew to profit from it. I’m not sure the same anger should be directed at Bob Woodward, though. This book just might help change the course of the election, and releasing it close to the election maximizes the impact.

Let’s not lose sight of who’s the real villain here: Donald Trump.

Relaxing some restrictions for travelers from places with the virus under control? Maybe. But China, Russia, and some other areas? Silly to stop checking.

Though, given I doubt they’re screening domestic flights and we have lots of uncontrolled spreading locations of our own already.

And this is why they didn’t release the numbers earlier… Trump pulled in slightly more than half the money Biden did in August.

Trump and Republicans’ August fundraising falls $154M short of Biden and Democrats
The news comes roughly a week after the Biden campaign and the DNC announced they raised a record $364.5 million, with $205 million coming from online and small-dollar contributions.

The RNC and the Trump campaign touted their $76 million haul over the course of the four-day Republican National Convention, which bested Biden and the DNC’s haul of $70 million during the Democratic National Convention the week before.

In fairness, I suspect temperature checks were health safety theater.

Really? They do them in Scotland now when you go in a pub or restaurant. And high temperature (Due to fever) is one of the recognised symptoms.

I can understand why people might view it as theatre though. The temperature check is done by someone pointing what looks like a Star Trek phaser at one’s forehead, and then it bleeps and lights up green when the temperature is normal. So, plenty of potential for japes and theatricality there- unless of course the “phaser” lights up red…

It turns out masks are probably even better for numbers, but temp with the IR scanners is so easy why not just do it.

In Scotland they’re doing both in pubs and restaurants. Generally the visit goes like this:

1) Go in the door, and wait at the sign that says “Wait to be seated”, just inside the door. This applies to pubs/bars as well as restaurants. If there’s someone already waiting, you have to wait outside the door. If there’s an actual queue, everyone has to maintain social distancing of at least 1 metre.
2) If you’re at head of the queue, then you’re greeted by someone. Both you and that person are wearing masks.
3) If there’s enough space in the place for without contravening social distancing rules, (Or you have booked in advance, which is required for restaurants) then you get the temperature check.
4) Once you pass that, then you get some anti-bacterial gel to put on your hands, and you’re led to your table.
5) You have to fill in some personal details (eg Phone no., email) in case there’s an outbreak, and the authorities have to contact you. These details are kept on paper and in a safe in the establishment, and anything more than 28 days old is destroyed.
6) Once you’re at your table, then you can take your mask off, but if you need to go anywhere else other than your table, (Say, for example, the toilet) you need to put the mask back on.
7) Payment by card only. (Every bank card over here these days is contactless, or at least chip ‘n’ PIN, and most modern smartphones also support contactless.)

Young Ben Sasse’s Rationale for Blowing Up the Senate Is Pure Comedy Gold
Even more serious than the prospect of an unbathed Chuck Grassley are Sasse’s suggested structural changes.
By Charles P. Pierce

With all that’s going on in the news, I apparently missed the great national groundswell demanding that Young Ben Sasse, Republican of Nebraska, redesign the constitutional structure of the federal government. In a Wall Street Journal op-ed, Young Ben, who is a rising intellectual power in the Republican monkeyhouse, suggests that we go back to the way the Senate once operated back in the days when it was almost incomprehensibly venal—from eliminating the direct election of senators to forcing them to go back to the golden days of communal boarding houses. Hey, it was good enough for Dan’l Webster.

Candidates for the Nobel Peace Prize can be nominated by any of thousands of notable politicians and officeholders around the world, people like government leaders, heads of state, chairmen of international bodies (Red Cross, WHO etc.), leaders of major political parties and the like. President Trump can make a nomination that will be considered by the Nobel committee as can President Putin and Kim Jong-Un.

The committee is less restrained in their choices of which nominations to throw out at the early stages of deliberation and they have no obligation to plump for a popular candidate who gets most individual nominations.

IIRC, the WH announced the “Court nominations” BS a couple of days ago: it’s obviously an attempt at distraction: though if this is intended to be a “normal” presser event, it’s going to devolve extraordinarily quickly if The Orange Anus has to deal with a barrage of questions about Woodward’s book…

And Dog knows what lineup of Federalist Society hacks he’s got lined up to propose for SCOTUS; does he really think that that’s going sway any voters?

Both the President* and Bob Woodward Knew This for Months and Kept It From the Public
Woodward knew the truth behind the administration*’s deadly bungling—and worse—and he saved it for his book, which will be released to wild acclaim and huge profits after nearly 200,000 Americans have died.
By Charles P. Pierce

Oh, Charlie is mad!

For reasons of their own—venal, selfish, inexcusable reasons, all of them—both Donald Trump and Bob Woodward shirked the duties of their respective occupations and, eventually, hundreds of thousands of Americans may be dead in part because they did. The shame of this should be everlasting. Bob Woodward’s nonfeasance in the face of this disaster should stand with Walter Duranty’s covering for Stalin in the matter of the Ukrainian famine as eternal embarrassments to journalism and to simple humanity. Nobody, as the bumper stickers used to say, ever died at Watergate.

re: #111 Charles Johnson

The thing that pisses me off with the Woodward info is that people are needlessly dead. No one can tell what would have been done had this info been made public, but it’s possible Trump might have caved if it made him look bad and there was pushback. His decision to shut down Stars and Stripes was changed in a day because it made him look bad to the troops. He’s backed down or bullshitted his way out of more than one of his dumbass stunts. This isn’t Watergate, it’s far worse by magnitudes. I guess this book coming out next week might help, but in 6 weeks will it even be a blip on anyone’s radar? I’m torn but still want to slap Woodward.

Remember that whole Benghazi business you’ve spent almost a decade obsessing over? The 4 deaths that you think should have indicted every single member of the Obama admin and ensured none of them ever saw the light of day again?

This is like if Obama had sat down with Woodward and told him that not only had the admin known where and when the attack would occur, but they’d made a willful act not to sound the alarm because “We didn’t want to start a panic.”

The outrage you would have felt over that? Now multiply it 50x, and you might begin to understand why so many people around you are seeing red right now.

That this was kept for a book and not a warning is unconscionable. As trump is telling people to not wear masks, why wasn’t the audio released? As trump told people to live a normal life knowing people were going to die and this asshole said and did nothing?

As for Woodward’s book itself, I won’t say it should be pirated like Bolton’s book was, I’m just saying if it is then I won’t lose any sleep over it. In light of the revelation that the man sat upon these tapes for months while tens of thousands died simply so he could secure a book deal, I consider any profit made to be step above blood money.

This is a man whose entire reputation is built upon the idea that he and Bernstein risked their careers if not their lives to bring vital info about wrong-doing in the White House to the people…and today, he’d happily sit on that same info just to write a book months later about what Nixon privately told him after the Watergate scandal fizzled out due to lack of evidence.

look at us now - masks are a symbol of your political alliance
biker=sturgis=maga
on and on

imo trump deliberately weaponized and politicized medical information and facts.
- dont wear masks
- it will all disappear
- open the economy
- open the schools
etc

it was clear to us sure

but if it was made clear that he was actually lying real time through his teeth, it might have caused a not insignifcant percentage of his base to be more careful before this all became set in cement.

I think the biggest laugh line today is that Donny downplayed the danger because he “didn’t want a panic.”

You know, like how people cleared store shelves of toilet paper and bottled water in a totally rational fashion. Or badgered store employees to the point of nervous breakdowns in the belief that they were “hiding” cleaning products. Though I admit there was a measure of rat-bastard rationality in the one fellow who stockpiled gallons of hand sanitizer with the intent of selling it to all those “rational” people responding to the pandemic.

Donny declared his action’s as “leadership,” but one should read such in the same way that Operation Market Garden was “leadership,” namely the leading of a lot of good people into early graves. This isn’t leadership, this is the polar opposition, it is cowardice writ large. Leaders work to combat panic and steer that nervous energy to constructive means, cowards avoid such because they fear failure and that’s Donny’s biggest fear.

i see this differently because it’s medical and affects everyone individually. and most people at least reluctantly, know how medicine and science work. even the magats end up in hospitals, on ventilators. and some of them even went for the ‘easy’ cures - hydroxy, clorox, fish tank cleaner, etc...because they thought they would work.

sure anti-vaxxers are a not insignificant vocal cadre

if trump hadnt taken a rigid stand on masks and distancing (the two early biggies) i think (with no evidence) that sure there would have been grumbling and some dissent and some acting out. it would not be nearly the virtual unanimous 40+% of the country that simply identifies as R/trump supporters and therefore absolutely has to adopt these positions

i have to believe no one would have thought of such heinous and vile thing.

By saying that being honest with the American people would lead to panic, you are effectively admitting that you have no confidence in the American people and they in turn have no confidence in you. That you cannot stand up and be the person people need in a time of crisis, you can only find excuses for your lack of leadership.

That’s all it ever was and his “tone” changed the moment he realized that his bullshittery was not curbing the panic but was actually fueling it. That was the same time that the Senate Repubs pulled his ass out of the fire by moving on the CARES Act, getting money into the hands of businesses and people, leading the markets to “recover” on the expectation that the government was done dithering and was going to do whatever it took to get the country through the crisis.

The “Spanish” flu wasn’t even from Spain it likely started in Kansas. More bs we just swallowed.

It’s unclear where the Spanish flu started, there’s still great uncertainty around an origin point. That said, the reason it was called the Spanish flu was because Spain was not involved in World War I and thus did not have wartime censorship. Consequently, the grave illness of Spain’s king and the progress of the flu were freely reported, as opposed to countries which were censoring news.

Trump is now proving himself even more unsuited for the job than Jimmy Carter. At least Carter tried to resolve the hostage crisis through Operation Eagle Claw. Yeah, it ended up being a total failure and only furthered the perception that he was in over his head, but at least he made the effort. Trump would have gone on record as saying that leaving the hostages in Iranian custody was better than risking the public thinking lesser of him had he tried to rescue them and failed.

With Strzok, you have to keep in mind he was a former government employee who Trump personally fucked over in his attempted retirement. And I am sure that his book had to go through much vetting because of the very real possibility that he might say something that would get him thrown in jail—whether legitimately or not.

I’ve never supported adding seats to the SCOTUS. And a fire-breathing progressive can be just as competent and knowledgeable as a moderate. We already have 5 justices who engage in partisan hackery, not on every issue but often enough. The Florida voting rights case is a perfect example.

It would be interesting to see what happens if Thomas decides to retire now to allow Trump to appoint a new justice, out of fear a delay would mean he would be replaced by a progressive.

Kind of peripheral, but no, this isn’t worse than Watergate, it’s just that those casualties were overseas. The secret bombing of Cambodia and everything that came of it were part of Watergate too.

For MONTHS, the Fake News polls have shown Sleepy Joe ahead of your President in key battleground states.

The lying media doesn’t want to upset their Democrat Partners, so in a recent poll, they’re still reporting I’m down a few points. Ridiculous. They’re trying to TRICK the American People into thinking I have no chance of winning, but WE know that couldn’t be further from the truth.

It’s going to be an uphill battle to win these critical states, and I am counting on YOU to step up and help ensure a MASSIVE VICTORY. I need you to contribute to the Official Battleground State Fund.

Yes, by all means, we should encourage the cult to believe that Trump is actually so far ahead they don’t need to vote. Let someone else carry the load for a change. Go to the store, cough on some old people and curse a few teenage employees, buy yourself a case of Milwaukee, and sit back to watch the libtards panic and commit mass suicide on election night.

Rochester update: zero accountability from ANYONE. Mayor calling for the police union boss to resign. Union boss calling for the mayor to resign. Trumpy US attorney announcing federal charges against two “outside agitators” at one of the nightly protests. City council demanding answers from the mayor about the police response to the protests. Mayor punting to the police chief, who handed in his resignation yesterday and didn’t show up to brief the council today. Protesters painted RESIGN, MURDERERS and BLM on the streets last night. City sent out crews before dawn to paint those over, only to reverse course on the BLM.sign.

There is no actual leadership here now. Just anger.

Or might have made trump take it more seriously - in public. Which may have changed the way REPUBLICANS are behaving. Maybe a statement that a mask was ok, that SD might be a good idea. Something to show there is a seriousness there.

True, nothing will move the base (but we don’t know how big the rock-bottom base is). It would have given some leverage to people who wanted something done at the federal level, it would give warning to people who rely on the CDC for information… it would have had all sorts of good effects.

How does this differ from Hannity, Jeanine Pirro, Tucker Carlson? They all assume the base only looks at Fox and believes everything Fox says.

Again, as I said earlier today, our brother was talking months ago about Trump knowing this was serious but not wanting to panic us — and our brother was totally ok with that logic. He also blames Cuomo for all the deaths in New York, but Trump? No responsibility for anything except his brilliant decision in “stopping” flights from China and thereby saving thousands of lives.

The answer came to me in a flash: They are probably haunted by the prospect that their lazy, drug addled, drooling idiot heirs will lose everything post haste if they are not left with the insurmountable advantage of hereditary privilege. This privilege is threatened by practically every form of social progress as well as by modern methods of business and the progress of technology.

Trump is playing so much defensive he has time for little else, but these topics are going to be in the debates (Biden will make sure of it).

I’m not sure if lives could have been saved if Woodward released the tapes sooner. We needed a leader that trump was never going to be. trump’s followers are so willing to bend over backwards to defend him, that nothing else matters to them.

In short, I’m not buying woodward’s book, but I’m saving all my anger for trump. And when he dies, I will piss on his grave.

The GOP playbook never changes. Back in the day, the main GOP response to the AIDS epidemic in the US when that started was “This thing kills gays and drug users? Great! How can we expedite it?” They only started taking it seriously when ‘innocent’ (feh) people started dying from it.

Here Trump and co. were giddy at the initial US news of the terrible covid19 outbreak in NYC because that is enemy territory for Republicans.

That’s because Spain wasn’t involved in the Great War… all the parties to the war were censoring the news, including about the pandemic in their home country and among their soldiers. Since Spain wasn’t in the war, it had a relatively free press who could report on it… and then the Spanish king got the bug, and we were off to the races…

Yes, I’m thinking that Trump’s claim will work.

Also, the likes of Fauci are now so compromised that we are indeed in trouble, the undermining of faith in scientific medicine is real.

One problem with many scientists is that they don’t operate well in the public sphere. They are not equipped to counter propaganda, to manage their public persona, or to confront ignorance. That latter may come as a surprise to some of you, but the scientists I have known, on the whole, never impressed me with their social management skills. Paige Patterson, the former president of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, who was ousted for generally being a jackass a couple of years ago (including harassing a woman who had been raped on the campus of the previous seminary he’d been president of) is back in the news. Seems ole Paige has his fingers in a foundation’s pie, and is basically trying to take it over and direct it away from its original stated purpose, which was to donate funds to Baylor University and the aforementioned SWBTS.

In a Tuesday filing in Tarrant County, Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and Baylor University allege that they were not notified about changes to the bylaws and charitable purpose of the Harold E. Riley Foundation. The changes came days after Patterson’s 2018 ouster as president of Southwestern over his handling of students’ sexual abuse reports.

The suit names the foundation’s current president Mike Hughes — who served as Southwestern’s vice president for advancement under Patterson — as a defendant.

The foundation was established by Riley, a successful businessman, in 2002 to support both schools. Recent tax filings show it holds more than $15 million in assets, mostly via shares in Citizens Inc., the Austin-based insurance company founded by Riley, who died in 2018.

According to the suit, the foundation’s new leadership has already sold off $4 million in shares while significantly curtailing its donations to both institutions — a direct violation of the foundation’s stated purpose.

The suit also accuses the foundation of using funds to purchase a car, to hire “high-priced law firms to engineer the secret coup” and of improperly appointing associates to salaried positions within the foundation.

that’s a great damn idea, if we build a national net/web structure to make it so more people have more access to the world that interests them, is that a totally crappy goal?

and jobs, jobs jobs, infrastructure isn’t sexy but you need it to compete and our country has been doing some serious laurel resting imho

It’s long since overdue tbh, our networking infrastructure lags far behind the smaller countries that have an easier time nationalizing infrastructure and rolling out these kinds of plans.

So, and some of you will not like me writing this, I believe that Trump will actually be improved in his numbers by his claim of not wanting to scare the public.

Many are too modeled by academia to live in an ivory tower.

Then you need to hear how the even news covered it. They were in full on “What the fuck?” mode on ABC, and they played Biden’s reply.

Speaking of Biden, I saw another commercial on Adult Swim. None of the four I have seen were the same.

Not IMO, but there still seems to be a pervasive attitude in a lot of the country (as Anymouse will attest) that fast, reliable Internet connections are some sort of frippery, or luxury service, rather than a fundamental component of 21st-Century economy/society.
And, as fripperies, considered (by Republicans, anyway) unsuitable for subsidy by taxpayer dollars*

* for customers, at any rate, they’ll be sure to find some excuse to shovel the money at telecom mega-corporations

And even if there is an “unpersuadable” bloc of voters who are either going to ignore, rationalize, or excuse Trump’s COVID bullshit, they key to the election isn’t (unfortunately) going to be about changing their votes, but keeping the (so far) majority of likely Biden voters from changing (or losing interest in) theirs. And to that end, Woodward’s interview may work quite well…
