I’m with you Charles. I too fell into the trap of developing a strong hatred of “those people” after 9/11, even though I knew none of the ones I saw walking around had anything to do with the attacks. I never openly lashed out at anyone, but I do remember not good thoughts coming into my head every time I boarded a plane and noticed someone who appeared Middle Eastern on it.
Thankfully, I never fell down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole or became a truther.

Wanted to add: 9/11 happened about a month after my 20th birthday so I was still a very impressionable young man back then, so it wasn’t a big stretch for me to fall in to hating Muslims. I’ve long since abandoned such silly, black and white views.
I was naive after 9/11 in a different way. I was skeptical about all interventions. Obviously I still think Iraq was a huge mistake but the mistake was going into Afghanistan and then going into Iraq and ignoring the Afghan theater.

We buy paper calendars, too - it’s a good way to keep a record of what we do in a given year, shows, day trips, etc. This year’s, needless to say, is a lot less crowded than the past few years.
Lucky me, I had spent 15 years in a university town and interacted with middle-easterners of all stripes before 9/11 happened. So they were (varied) people to me, and I was never tempted to make a category of them.

I think it was more that UAE and Bahrain wanted access to Israel’s military gear (and US gear), and that greased the wheels. They’re both more concerned about Iran than the Israelis.
Israel never posed a threat to the Arab/Muslim dominated countries. Iran was always the bigger threat, and now that Iran’s nuclear program isn’t constrained by the JCPOA when Trump abrogated the deal, the other countries are now reconciling the fact that they need to deal with Iran and that Israel isn’t the enemy they built it up to be.
I’d expect to see deals signed selling Iron Dome packages to both UAE and Bahrain in short order.

A group of coworkers and I scheduled a visit to local mosque several months after the attack. . Folks there were incredibly happy to welcome us and spend time with us discussing Islam. I was sincerely touched by their reaction.
I focus on that time rather than on the attacks. I don’t need to think about or revisit the events to be motivated to prevent tragedies. But pulling together as people is the means, not the hate that triggered the tragedy in the first place.
For those who don’t know, the 1890 census records were wiped out in a fire. It creates a huge gap of information for researchers. My dad’s grandparents all came of age between 1880 and 1900.

Orientation was put off until late June here.
I went early July boro building here.
Supposed to be 7 but 5 showed up.
Out of 5 of us, 2 were clean morons.
Long story short: Meeting went to shit as those 2 had to pick apart everything that was just explained to them. To the point of distraction.
We were then told 15 minutes before the end we were not going to be going door to door, but to “group homes”.
You can figure out what that means.
I asked who would we be dealing with, not the individuals I hope?
Oh we were assured only the “staff” would be our contacts and we would not be on personal contact with “residents”.
Then they told us there was a test to take in the book.
The book we never opened. Among all the other shit we had in a big box.
The test was about swearing in people to do our job if the “staff” didn’t get around to actually doing their job.
Huh?
And that we may be transferred and work a different county.
What?
And we were being paid less than some of the other counties around us, but we would not receive the rate in the county we might be working.
Pardon me?
I went home and looked at the test.
For 2 months paid?
Gone. Bye bye.
That was my experience, and I’m sure it’s worse elsewhere.
For under 15 bucks an hour?
No way.
My 2 cents.
I was in college and living at fraternity house. We had one older guy who was Muslim. I remember on September 11-12-ish he was at the house for lunch and we got up to leave at the same time, and he offered me a ride to my next class. On the way, he talked about how much crap he was getting and expected to get from all the other guys, and said something along the lines of not seeing him much around the house anymore. That was the last time I saw him.

The bright side is that the census is no longer a once a decade thing. The Census Bureau operates year round every year, so if the data is complete trash, we will know based off of estimates they’ve done between 2010 and now.

The French presidency is for a 7 year term (and they don’t have term limits). So I don’t think 8 years would necessarily be too long. It would make congressional elections more important, and would likely require the congress to be more aggressive in their use of power vis a vis the presidency.
My thinking, and it wasn’t too deep at the moment, was mostly about how to strengthen congress and constrain the presidency. Line of thought was mostly that with 8 years, Congress can’t rely on voters bailing them out as so many seemed to want between 2017 and 2019.

I think they will. If so, they need to be smacked down very hard. If law enforcement can’t or won’t do it, the job falls to the people themselves. That’s why I want a pact in 2022: No performative grief on 9/11. Yes, the families and friends of the dead can mourn, or not. Everyone else must move on. No, the Peabody (MA) police department will NOT have 9/11 off! (True! They wanted the day off! Fortunately, they lost that one.)
As I see it, I’m doing everyone a great favor: The freedom to move on without guilt or obligation. Not everyone will be able to do this, but to those that can—especially politicians!—it will be the boulder released from our shoulders.
