And in 2019 a virus was discovered that rapidly spread around the world, and the POTUS was told exactly how deadly it was and that it was airborne.
He decided to tell his citizens it was no big deal, and stigmatized those who wore marks as somehow bad people.
To date over 190,000 Americans are dead, with more to die and over 6 Million were infected and no one knows when it will end.
The economy is trashed, millions have lost jobs and business and the Party Of Donald Trump lines their pockets as they continue to try and strip affordable healthcare from people, and destroy Social Security.
We will never forget.

We’re still a couple of weeks away from Yom Kippur, but I think most of the Jewish contingent here at LGF would recognize this as being very much in the spirit of the season.

Would that more of us could search deeply into the ways we’ve wronged others and repent as sincerely.

I’m with you Charles. I too fell into the trap of developing a strong hatred of “those people” after 9/11, even though I knew none of the ones I saw walking around had anything to do with the attacks. I never openly lashed out at anyone, but I do remember not good thoughts coming into my head every time I boarded a plane and noticed someone who appeared Middle Eastern on it.

Thankfully, I never fell down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole or became a truther.

Wanted to add: 9/11 happened about a month after my 20th birthday so I was still a very impressionable young man back then, so it wasn’t a big stretch for me to fall in to hating Muslims. I’ve long since abandoned such silly, black and white views.

I was naive after 9/11 in a different way. I was skeptical about all interventions. Obviously I still think Iraq was a huge mistake but the mistake was going into Afghanistan and then going into Iraq and ignoring the Afghan theater.

Ya learn something new every day! I never knew they named it.

We buy paper calendars, too - it’s a good way to keep a record of what we do in a given year, shows, day trips, etc. This year’s, needless to say, is a lot less crowded than the past few years.

my guess is that it is like the Israel/UAE “deal” in that all these things were happening via back channels for decades and are just now being brought into the light.

I think it was more that UAE and Bahrain wanted access to Israel’s military gear (and US gear), and that greased the wheels. They’re both more concerned about Iran than the Israelis.

Israel never posed a threat to the Arab/Muslim dominated countries. Iran was always the bigger threat, and now that Iran’s nuclear program isn’t constrained by the JCPOA when Trump abrogated the deal, the other countries are now reconciling the fact that they need to deal with Iran and that Israel isn’t the enemy they built it up to be.

I’d expect to see deals signed selling Iron Dome packages to both UAE and Bahrain in short order.

I had a number of close Muslim friends who related horrific stories of discrimination and hate after the attacks.

A group of coworkers and I scheduled a visit to local mosque several months after the attack. . Folks there were incredibly happy to welcome us and spend time with us discussing Islam. I was sincerely touched by their reaction.

I focus on that time rather than on the attacks. I don’t need to think about or revisit the events to be motivated to prevent tragedies. But pulling together as people is the means, not the hate that triggered the tragedy in the first place.

I never saw it in Northern Va after 9/11 but it helped us that we had Muslim classmates from the start of grade school so it was fairly easy for us to differentiate between Al Qaeda and classmates. I even had a classmate senior year who had fought the Taliban as a teenager before coming here. He really enjoyed our US government class, taught by a US military vet.

I had been accepted to do enumeration work for the Census back before CV19.
Orientation was put off until late June here.
I went early July boro building here.
Supposed to be 7 but 5 showed up.
Out of 5 of us, 2 were clean morons.
Long story short: Meeting went to shit as those 2 had to pick apart everything that was just explained to them. To the point of distraction.
We were then told 15 minutes before the end we were not going to be going door to door, but to “group homes”.
You can figure out what that means.
I asked who would we be dealing with, not the individuals I hope?
Oh we were assured only the “staff” would be our contacts and we would not be on personal contact with “residents”.
Then they told us there was a test to take in the book.
The book we never opened. Among all the other shit we had in a big box.
The test was about swearing in people to do our job if the “staff” didn’t get around to actually doing their job.
Huh?
And that we may be transferred and work a different county.
What?
And we were being paid less than some of the other counties around us, but we would not receive the rate in the county we might be working.
Pardon me?
I went home and looked at the test.
For 2 months paid?
Gone. Bye bye.
That was my experience, and I’m sure it’s worse elsewhere.
For under 15 bucks an hour?
No way.
My 2 cents.

I was in college and living at fraternity house. We had one older guy who was Muslim. I remember on September 11-12-ish he was at the house for lunch and we got up to leave at the same time, and he offered me a ride to my next class. On the way, he talked about how much crap he was getting and expected to get from all the other guys, and said something along the lines of not seeing him much around the house anymore. That was the last time I saw him.

The bright side is that the census is no longer a once a decade thing. The Census Bureau operates year round every year, so if the data is complete trash, we will know based off of estimates they’ve done between 2010 and now.

my sister lives in NC
she was planning on coming down just when the virus hit
so we waited and waited
eventually decided she could drive, with caveats because she’ll be staying at moms (who’s 92)
minimal stops
pack your own food
gas and bathroom breaks only, with the proper precautions
just drive, drive drive.
when you get here, shower and laundry (mostly because who knows?)
then 2 weeks ago, literally 4 days before she was about to leave, she gets notified she was in an apartment with someone who the next day tested positive (long story).
!#$@^*@%$^&@&@%&
she got tested on wednesday
results last friday - negative. phew.
got on the road yesterday at 5am.
arrived around 6pm or so and did the routine

i made a spatchcocked chicken over mixed vegetables of carrots, potatoes, onions and brussels sprouts
with a side of beer rice for those who dont want to eat potatoes.
we’re bringing it over later for dinner.

we haven’t seen her since since thanksgiving.
the rest of the family requires air travel and we’re having none of that in either direction.

my sister is cool.
my entire family gets along
mrs dm’s entire family gets along
our families get along with each other
we know how lucky we are about that

Many years ago I read Eric Alterman while he had a blog. One of his bete noires was Andrew Sullivan, who also went to a very dark place after the 9/11 attacks. But then I noticed that Sullivan had changed his tune when he realized the disaster that the Iraq invasion had become. I started reading him at that time and then exchanged some comments with Alterman, suggesting that Sullivan had repented. Alterman assured me that Sullivan was beyond redemption. At that time and for several years afterwards, I thought Alterman was too harsh and unforgiving. It was only after Sullivan abandoned his blog that I really discovered how right Alterman was and how vile Sullivan has always been..

I think Sullivan only turned against Bush because he felt his rights being threatened when Bush pushed the FMA. Even while he went after Palin who I deeply dislike, I was disgusted by him pushing a conspiracy that Trigg wasn’t Sarah’s but Bristol’s. There were a lot of legitimate reasons to go after Palin but her youngest son wasn’t one.

There were countless construction workers who worked on the pile alongside the FDNY, NYPD, EMT, PAPD, and other agencies. They weren’t first responders, but they suffered for their effort. Trump never got past the checkpoints. He wasn’t invited. He was never down there. No one could remember him ever being down there. He had nothing to offer.

Everyone knows that he wasn’t a construction guy. He was a con artist who’d make noise about stuff, but couldn’t bring construction crews to bear, the gear, or the logistics to do any of what was necessary.

You had Skansa. You had Silverstein Properties (which had just signed the lease on the WTC complex). And that’s just what I can remember. There was Bay Crane. I remember crossing into Brooklyn over the Manhattan Bridge with a friend, and Bay Crane had a bunch of medium sized cranes queued up to go into Manhattan to help with the efforts.

Trump was nowhere to be found, because he had nothing to offer. He was, is, and always will be, about self promotion.

Reading that piece on him, I immediately become skeptical of any one claiming to be a libertarian who isn’t 100% pro-choice on abortion. A government small enough to fit into a uterus isn’t one that cares too much for the liberty of half the population.

Perot’s running mate in 1992 was a libertarian. And Admiral Stockdale was very pro-choice. Most who claim to be libertarians now are just Republicans who pretend to be more serious than the typical Republican about slashing government programs to balance the budget.

1. eliminating the electoral college probably happens if/when someone wins an actual majority of the popular vote but loses in the EC.

2. what if the presidential term was 8 years, and you couldn’t serve consecutive terms?

On the second idea, a couple of point:
- people would probably take the election more seriously because it is for a longer period of time
- congress may be more willing to use impeachment for bad acts because of the longer term length

Disagree with both:
1. Only happens if a Republican wins the popular vote but loses in the EC. The most fanatic supporters of the EC today don’t care about the popular vote but only about preserving GOP rule.

2. 8 years is too long a period without the chance to change course if you object to the direction a president is going. Trump would be president for 8 years and thanks to an obstinate GOP would be able to commit any infraction without any public recourse. After all, removal of a president requires a 2/3 vote in the Senate — and no way are the Democrats going to end up with 2/3 of the Senate in 2020.

The French presidency is for a 7 year term (and they don’t have term limits). So I don’t think 8 years would necessarily be too long. It would make congressional elections more important, and would likely require the congress to be more aggressive in their use of power vis a vis the presidency.

My thinking, and it wasn’t too deep at the moment, was mostly about how to strengthen congress and constrain the presidency. Line of thought was mostly that with 8 years, Congress can’t rely on voters bailing them out as so many seemed to want between 2017 and 2019.

“…a new witness to the killing of Rienoehl now alleges that the fugitive task force itself behaved as a violent mob. The witness, Nate Dinguss, released his description of events through an attorney, relating that “officers never attempted to apprehend Reinoehl and did not issue any commands prior to shooting at him.” The eyewitness, his attorney describes, saw the task force ambush Reinoehl, whom Dinguss had seen “walking toward his car with his cellphone in his hand chewing on a gummy worm when two unmarked law enforcement vehicles suddenly converged from different directions and began firing at Reinoehl.”

Dinguss, the lawyer relates, “never observed a firearm on Reinoehl” and did not see “Reinoehl reach for anything.” Instead, Rienoehl ducked for cover by his car as “officers shot multiple rapid-fire rounds at Reinoehl before issuing a brief ‘stop’ command, quickly followed by more rapid-fire shooting by additional officers.” After shooting Reinoehl, Dinguss alleges, officers let the injured man languish, making “no attempt to render life-saving aid … until multiple minutes following the shooting.”

I seem to recall quite a few of them were complaining about the design of the Shanksville 9/11 memorial incorporating a crescent, and therefore that it was a secret Muslim stake to the site.

Same bunch also claimed that a local mosque would be built near Ground Zero on Park Row that would somehow tower over 1WTC (aka Freedom Tower, which is the Western Hemisphere’s tallest skyscraper).

There was a guy, I forget his name now, who REALLY wanted me to push that Shanksville memorial story at LGF, and I think I even posted something about it once before I said to myself, “Wait a minute, this is batshit nuts.”

There was a lot of batcrap insanity, especially with the memorial design and then the mosque (or the Ground Zero megamosque as Geller and other assorted anti-Muslim bigots would repeatedly assert).

That started up again when they found components from one of the planes in a space behind one of the buildings as it was being worked on.

It was always laughable how they would claim a 7 story building that contained a mosque would somehow tower over the WTC complex. But for people who only read headlines, it was all that ever mattered. Same with the memorial design. A random crescent was suddenly a menacing Islamic symbol. It was all bulkshit.

Of course, there might not be any debates. And if there are, Trump won’t be able to pull his stunt of physically stalking his opponent; even if they are on the same stage (probably won’t be in the same city), Trump doesn’t tower over Biden.

The problem of course is that Trump will Gish Gallop Biden and there won’t be time for Biden to answer the question plus respond to the Gish Gallop.

But he does have plenty of nutjob RW militias ready to do his bidding.

I think they will. If so, they need to be smacked down very hard. If law enforcement can’t or won’t do it, the job falls to the people themselves. Btw, I believe this, dealing with armed insurgents until loyal forces arrive, is one of the real intents of the second amendment, as opposed to overthrowing a government one happens not to like. The latter interpretation is fairly new, popularized by racist insurgents from the 1960s onward.
The Putin/Trump auxiliaries, aka nutjob militias, are vulnerable. It is important to gather as much intelligence as possible on them, first because it is standard practice when dealing with an armed enemy, and secondly because it pits our strength, intelligence in all its forms, against their most glaring weakness, their ignorant and delusional worldview. The latter weakness is inherent and not subject to correction, since they have no motivation without it.
Another inherent weakness is their complete disregard for cover, concealment and stealth. This is partly because they are just plain stupid but mostly because their every action is predicated on display and exposure.

He’s right. Nearly any other cause with players on both teams showing unity would get cheers. So many fans don’t look at athletes as anything other than existing for their entertainment. Their being citizens in this society means nothing to them.

Players kneel and these fuckers lose their minds.

They lock arms and these fuckers boo.

One might almost think that it had nothing to do with the anthem…

Those are future doctors, engineers, inventors, and others who could have added to America’s greatness. And now they’ll go to another country which will welcome them, cultivate their potential, and reap the rewards for decades to come.

Per WaPo

The Democratic opponent of Republican candidate Marjorie Taylor Greene, a professed QAnon conspiracy theory believer, said Friday he was dropping out of the race for the U.S. House seat in Georgia.

Kevin Van Ausdal cited “family and personal reasons” in announcing that he could not continue his candidacy in Georgia’s 14th Congressional District. Greene is favored to win the open seat in the strongly GOP district.

In a statement posted to Twitter, Van Ausdal said the next steps in his life would be taking him away from Georgia, “so I will be disqualified from serving in Congress.”

I wonder if Q threatened his family? This sounds like something awful happened.

Ask him what players can do to show support for racial equality that he’d support. Bet you the answer is some stuttered bullshit about how they need to do that “on their own time” and not “politicize” the sport…but they should totally stand and have their hand over their heart for the national anthem “for the troops.”

Zero. I heard the way he used “BLM”.

And there’s this:

Eating at a restaurant, whether inside or outside, is among the riskiest pandemic activities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found.

In a study of 314 adults, the CDC found that those who tested positive were about twice as likely to have gone to a restaurant before getting sick. Researchers asked each participant what they had done two weeks before getting tested, including wearing masks or going to restaurants, bars, salons or gyms.

Both people who tested positive and those who tested negative gave similar answers, except when it came to going to restaurants. The data show people who tested positive were significantly more likely to eat at restaurants in “any area designated by the restaurant, including indoor, patio, and outdoor seating.”

For one, I don’t like assholes speaking for me about God, but they all do it. God wasn’t any more a part of 9/11 or uniting our particular country or treating our country like his favorite child than he decides who wins the fucking Superbowl, so those who pretend to speak for or know God best can ditch that shit and move on to something more productive.

Trump falls in the same tiresome GOP trap of invoking God whenever it will score brownie points with the gullible. It’s like watching the same stupid card trick over and over, even after you know how it’s done and the novelty has worn off.

re: #243 Quoth the raven, Covfefe.

That’s why I want a pact in 2022: No performative grief on 9/11. Yes, the families and friends of the dead can mourn, or not. Everyone else must move on. No, the Peabody (MA) police department will NOT have 9/11 off! (True! They wanted the day off! Fortunately, they lost that one.)

As I see it, I’m doing everyone a great favor: The freedom to move on without guilt or obligation. Not everyone will be able to do this, but to those that can—especially politicians!—it will be the boulder released from our shoulders.

Except for people who rewatch the footage to get off on it. Those people can fuck themselves.

I accept the challenge. I could have come home under a flag, in a full-size coffin though a shoebox would probably have sufficed. This shirt is the product of an ignorant, traitorous mind that has likely been duped by enemy propaganda.

Btw, I actually find it a little distasteful to keep playing the veteran card, since it was a long time ago, a lot has happened since, and they aren’t exactly my favorite memories anyway. Nevertheless, fascist jackals and their drooling idiot accomplices keep trying to steal that card for their own deck, so someone has to keep grabbing it back.
