Oh, and, happy weekend!

If we live on as a democracy I won’t have a manhunt after my ass after election day, that is what the privileged douche bag POTUS and I differ.

The Nuremberg trials were a good test run.

And another one down…

Ohio’s new health director backed out from the job hours after her appointment was announced, saying that harassment of her predecessor played a part in her decision.

Joan Duwve, a native Ohioan who has been serving as South Carolina’s public health director, hastily resigned on Thursday hours after Gov. Mike DeWine praised her at a news conference. In statement to the State newspaper on Friday, Duwve said “conversations” in which she learned about difficulties faced by Amy Acton gave her pause and led her to ultimately reject the offer.

All you need to know about the ass-kissing, Trump spelling ambassador, courtesy of wiki:

According to those interviewed by CBS News, the work climate at the Embassy in Reykjavik was “untenable” under Gunter’s leadership; in fewer than two years on the job, Gunter had already had seven deputy chiefs of mission (DCMs), the second-highest positions at the embassy, held by career foreign service officers.[8] A State Department official told CBS that the first DCM spent months learning Icelandic, but was rejected by Gunter, reportedly because the ambassador “didn’t like the look of him” at their first meeting.[8] The second DCM spent only six months in Iceland, and was followed a series of short-term temporary DCMs, with whom Gunter reportedly clashed frequently.[8] CBS News also reported that Gunter “accused others of various, unsubstantiated infractions, including trying to undermine him to Washington and being complicit with the ‘deep state.’”[8]

In February 2020, after taking personal leave after a conference in Washington, Gunter refused to return to his post in Reykjavik. The State Department attributed Gunter’s delayed return to Iceland to the COVID-19 pandemic; however, “multiple sources in Washington, Reykjavik and elsewhere said Gunter wanted to work remotely from California and told senior officials he would not go back overseas unless expressly ordered to do so by Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.”[8] A series of senior State Department officials failed to persuaded Gunter until Pompeo called him; Gunter returned to Iceland in May 2020.[8] Gunter is controversial in Iceland, with many objecting to his description of COVID-19 as “the Invisible China Virus!” on Twitter.[8]

Smell of smoke in the air. Don’t think this is a new fire. And as the wind is onshore, I doubt it was the local fire I’m smelling. Wonder if the very large “smoke deck” hanging around the west coast is drifting down to ground, given the cooler temps.

I called a friend in Daly City this morning to wish his husband a happy birthday. It sounded like there was a lot of tension on their end of the line. My friend just lost his driver’s license due to his worsening Parkinson’s disease. There was a TV or monitor blaring in the background so I was struggling to understand the conversation. It wound up being a very short, confused call and I felt fear for how they’re doing in the disaster out there.

It was just a test.

But an “emergency alert” blasted out a little after 9 a.m. Friday by the Town of Tonawanda that somehow ended up on thousands of Erie County residents’ cellphones caused momentary panic - before people read it and realized it was just a friendly reminder to wash your hands and wear a mask.

It turns out that the town’s emergency services was testing out the alert system, according to town officials.

“Somebody made a mistake. A bad mistake,” acknowledged Town Supervisor Joseph Emminger, who apologized for the incident in a series of posts to Twitter throughout the day.

He also acknowledged that it was “an inappropriate day to do it. An inappropriate time to do it.” Friday marked the 19th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks and many communities were holding solemn commemorations in the morning when cellphones buzzed with the alert.

On the football front, our tax money is still being used to go after the Big Ten. The state attorney general says the Big Ten is out-of-compliance with the state non-profit act, because it’s decision-making process is opaque (they’re referring to how the Big Ten arrived at the decision to suspend its football season this year). The goal is to force the Big Ten to hold football and other sports or lose their not-for-profit status in Nebraska.

Things are certainly back to normal here. It’s like there’s no disease at all.

Second Nebraska prison under quarantine; state stops accepting new male inmates (Kearney, Nebr. Hub)

LINCOLN — A COVID-19 outbreak forced a second state prison to go into quarantine on Friday, and this shutdown may end up affecting local jails as well.

The State Diagnostic and Evaluation Center in Lincoln, which serves as the intake point for new male prisoners, was put on quarantine after a jump in infections among inmates.

No new male inmates are being accepted by the state, which, if the quarantine persists, could cause overcrowding at county jails, which transfer those convicted of serious crimes to state prisons.

“If this drags on for a while, it could clog us up,” said Douglas County Corrections Director Michael Myers. His jail, which holds about 1,200 inmates, sends about 1,000 a year to the state, he said.

Testing of more than 200 inmates at the Diagnostic and Evaluation Center on Thursday found 30 inmates, from multiple housing units, positive for COVID-19.

Before Thursday, 15 inmates at the prison had tested positive.

The Sidney, Nebr. Sun-Telegraph has an article about a woman who recently contracted Covid-19 taking care of a friend, then passing it on to her hub.

They describe the symptoms they went through.

The problem with the article is she promotes the idea of hydroxychloroquine and how horrible doctors wouldn’t give her a prescription for it, while she has a friend in Texas who she claims got better faster with it. The newspaper doesn’t note anywhere that this is not a proper treatment for the disease.

Surviving COVID

In the world of the cynic, “No good deed goes unpunished.” In the world of Karen and Bill Sydow of Sidney, serving a friend in need resulted in their own illnesses.

The symptoms caused concern because they aligned with the general description of the nuvo [sic: novel] coronavirus symptoms.

“I was exposed when I took care of someone who came home from a hospital, not here,” Karen Sydow said.

She said her friend likely contracted the virus while in the hospital because of how quickly after coming home she tested positive. She started coughing her second day home from the hospital and her doctor wanted her to be tested. Her test confirmed her positive.

Karen’s experience is a little different. She and her husband Bill are in their 60s and have no outstanding health issues. When she spoke with her doctor, the doctor recommended she quarantine at home.

She describes how the disease affected her, then this part:

She said the frustrating issue in the experience is to go to the hospital and request hydroxychloroquine and be told “no.” She said she was told “it would kill me.”

“She (clinical nurse) told me it was a virus and go treat it with cold medicine,” Karen said.

She and her husband Bill said they have friends in Texas who used hydroxychloroquine and recovered much sooner.

‘They did feel better in two days,” she said.

And the last bit:

She credits their lack of fear to their faith in God.

Where was God for all the people who’ve died? Didn’t pray right? Not the correct sort of Christian?

“I’m still dealing with the tiredness and breathing,” she said.

Then you’re not over it.

She said while sometimes the breathing is more difficult than normal, it is not stressed.

“It’s not prideful. Its just the way we feel,” Karen said.

Yes, it’s prideful.

The whole article is “see, it’s not bad, we got through it, and what’s wrong with the medical community that they won’t let us sign up for Trump’s snake oil?”

Lululemon lampooned for ‘resist capitalism’ post (BBC)

Lululemon, known for its £128 yoga leggings, is facing mockery on social media for promoting an event about “decolonising gender” and how to “resist capitalism”.

The event was featured in an Instagram post in which Lululemon recommended other accounts to follow, including the host of the workshop, Rebby Kern.

The yoga instructor is a US-based brand ambassador for the firm.

Lululemon distanced itself after the irony of the message drew attention.

“We recently shared on our social channels an upcoming event organised by one of our ambassadors.

“This is not a Lululemon forum and it does not represent the company’s views,” a spokeswoman told the BBC.

She said the firm was removing the post.

Obituary: Shere Hite, pioneering sex researcher (BBC)

“All too many men still seem to believe, in a rather naive and egocentric way, that what feels good to them is automatically what feels good to women.”

Such terse pronouncements made Shere Hite - a sex researcher who a died this week at the age of 77 - both a feminist hero and a controversial figure in 1970s America.

Her pioneering work The Hite Report upended prevailing notions about female sexuality.

The book, which came out in 1976, laid out the views of 3,500 women on sexuality and the female orgasm. It challenged many male assumptions, and was derided by some, including Playboy, which dubbed it the “Hate Report”.

She endured intense and lasting criticism in the US, and eventually renounced her American citizenship in 1995.

Just a piker, a tropical depression (number 19 this year). It won’t be a tropical storm until it reaches the Gulf of Mexico, though tropical storm watches for South Florida have been discontinued.

Watches are up for the Florida Panhandle, though the track now has it going into the Miss./La. state line area as a tropical storm.

Meanwhile, over in the UK, I see that Boris Johnson is blaming the EU for trying to “carve up” the UK.

It’s all about the Brexiteers not wanting to take responsibility for what Brexit really means in Northern Ireland.

Namely, the only way to have the EU and the UK to have controlled trade is to have a hard border between NI and the RoI.

But of course the Irish don’t want that.

So now Johnson is saying the EU is going to set up a de facto border in the Irish sea.

When all along it was the Brexiteers who ignored the Irish.

The chickens will eventually come home to roost.

That said, I can see real issues with giving tests remotely.

Many professional and certification tests are conducted at third party testing centers. Maybe schools need to convert some classroom space for onsite testing.
Students could cycle through as required, no need for all students to be in the same room.

When I heard on NPR the other day that she was being appointed (I listen to WKSU, Kent State so get all local Ohio news) I thought the announcer said her name was “Doobie”. I giggled.

At least this one had a mask on - even here in the derp center of Minnesota, it seems people are mostly taking this seriously. As we were being driven back to HQ at the end of the day we went through the Temple U campus. We drove by the football field and saw many players with no masks at all. That and the Temple Campus as of September 3rd has no in person instruction.

In the meantime, MN GOP Senators are being petty assholes, voting to remove Governor Walz’s Commerce Commissioner during their special session as payback for the Democratic-led House refusing to end the Governor’s peacetime emergency powers. The Governor is rapidly running out of fucks to give, firing back with strong words about the GOP trying to pretend the pandemic isn’t real and directly linking their behavior to the continuing fatalities from COVID-19.

but really, people are just tired of not being able to do the things they want, so they’re starting to just do them anyway.

it is also that the potential risk is entirely downplayed.

‘going out to a restaurant’ is no big deal
of course it isnt if you’re gonna ignore that it could kill you
or that you could potentially kill someone else

for me, very little right now is worth the risk

You’re quite right on all of this. I also agree with your last line - I go to the gas station once or twice a week for incidentals, we do takeout, the only risky thing I do is go to church and even then, I refused to attend our massive outdoor “united services” because of the risk. There’s no point going out to eat, or going to a movie, nothing is worth contracting a disease that I could give to my in-laws which would almost certainly kill them.

Fair Game in this fact free environment? Or not?

You know it’s a real damn shame these violent Trump fanatics are starting fires in the states they hate. Trump 2020 campaign funds in action. Out there pretending to be BLM and shattering windows to incite a riot. Showing up in heavily armed convoys and paintball shooting people on the street. And deliberately infecting others with COVID by refusing to mask in public. Trying to force open indoor venues where crowds can gather and get ill, only to infect many others. Even a Sheriff did his best to ensure the spread of COVID in his county by banning masks from his deputies. Ever hear of a Pox party? The GOP is the Pox party now.

We already know they resent our existence. We already know Homeland security rates White supremacy movements the prime, or #1, most likely terror threat in the United States. What a thought for September 12 huh?

There were a record 27 named storms, of which 14 were hurricanes, exceeding the 1969 record of 12 hurricanes, and 7 were major hurricanes. Of the 7 major hurricanes, an unprecedented 3 reached category 5 status, with a 4th reaching the greatest possible windspeed within category 4 of the Saffir-Simpson scale. The season has been remarkable for its early beginning and number of storms as well as the intensity of the hurricanes, including the most intense hurricane on record for the Atlantic.

This Indianapolis charity says it helps police. Police chiefs say it’s a scam. (Indianapolis Star)

An elderly man in Trenton, Michigan, received a dire letter that warned about the “greatest threats to our public safety in our nation’s history.”

The solution, the letter says, is clear: “Give our law enforcement officers the crime prevention tools they need.” A donation of $10, $15 or $25 would help keep communities like Trenton safe.

Donations, however, aren’t directed to the Trenton Police Department — or typically any other police agency, for that matter. Instead, the money makes its way to a new nonprofit based in Indianapolis.

At least four police departments in four states have found the letters to be confusing and misleading enough to issue “scam alerts” in their communities. One police chief even reported the operation to a federal postal investigator.

Politico: “The health department’s politically appointed communications aides have demanded the right to review and seek changes to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s weekly scientific reports charting the progress of the coronavirus pandemic, in what officials characterized as an attempt to intimidate the reports’ authors and water down their communications to health professionals.”

“In some cases, emails from communications aides to CDC Director Robert Redfield and other senior officials openly complained that the agency’s reports would undermine President Trump’s optimistic messages about the outbreak.”

the best comment i read:

For the umpteenth time, it’s a scandal that would have ended most presidencies but doesn’t cause a blip here. He’s forcing a federal agency charged with protecting public health to withhold information politically inconvenient to the president in a way that directly threatens the lives of Americans. It’s so awful no past president would have contemplated it, but now it’s so ordinary it doesn’t even raise an eyebrow. In a way, it’s not Trump’s fault. He’s just a broken subhuman shit acting according to his nature, which is not in any way concealed. Indeed, he flaunts it. The real villains here are the people who continue to support Trump.

If you’re eating, you cannot wear a mask. The question is: were the tables properly spaced?

The current situation in Scotland for hospitality (Cafes, bars, restaurants, etc.) is that you’re assigned to a socially distanced space (eg a table) where you can take your mask off for eating or drinking, but if you move outside that space, you have to do it with your mask fully on.

Looks like Trump’s “vote twice” instruction is nothing new, it’s just out in the open now. This story is from 2017 and refers to the 2016 election. Note the role of conspira-liars.
Iowa woman charged with voting twice for Trump pleads guilty

An Iowa woman charged with voting twice for Donald Trump last fall has pleaded guilty to election misconduct.

Court records show Terri Lynn Rote entered a plea on June 27 to the felony charge and a district court judge in Des Moines accepted the plea. Sentencing is set for Aug. 15.

Rote, who is 56 and lives in Des Moines, told police she turned in two absentee ballots before the November election because she believed Trump’s unsubstantiated claims that the election was rigged and that her first ballot would be changed to a vote for Hillary Clinton.

Former Republican strategist Stuart Stevens told Vanity Fair the GOP under Donald Trump is a party of cynics, stooges, racists, and obsequious enablers whose profiles in cowardice bear an uncomfortable resemblance to 1930s Germany.

Said Stevens: “When I talk to Republican politicians, I hear Franz von Papen,” referencing the German chancellor who convinced Germans that so-called radical leftists were a far greater threat than Adolf Hitler.

He added: “They all know that Trump is an idiot. They all know that he’s uniquely unqualified to be president. But they convinced themselves that he was a necessity.”

More: “It is the combination of the anti-intellectualism, the anti-education elements of the Republican Party, and the anti-elite elements of the Republican Party, so-called, that have culminated in this toxic brew that is killing tens of thousands of Americans. I mean, more Americans are going to die because of this combination of political beliefs than major wars.”

“As democracy is perfected, the office of president represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. “There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. Reading David Neiwert’s Alt-America: the rise of the radical right in the age of Trump.

About halfway in he gets into two groups that are disparate in psych profiles but when coalesce form a very toxic political environment. I see this with clarity now.
SDO: Social Dominance Orientation: people strongly influenced by a belief in social heirarchy and domination, themselves wanted to be dominant/leaders
RWA: Right Wing Authoritarians: people wanting an authoritarian society, willing to live inside one

Forgot to add that frankly, Paramount blew up a golden opportunity. I get that Paramount wants to protect its intellectual property, but if I were the head of Paramount and saw that fan film, my first response wouldn’t be to file a lawsuit.

My first response would’ve been to call in the people behind that film and say to them, “If we give you a budget of around $30 million or so and hooked you up with ILM, what could you give us and when?”

Yeah, Prelude to Axanar was easily the best fan-made film.

Trek fans like to shit on CBS and Paramount (at the time, separate entities) for getting the follow-on full-length feature Star Trek: Axanar pretty much shut down, but the Axanar folks were trying to build a professional production house on the back of the Star Trek IP to compete with both CBS and Paramount, among other things. Do I wholly agree with CBS & Paramount on this? No, but I don’t agree with how Axanar Productions was doing things either.

How horrible! Imagine what would happen here if the identity of the site owner/operator were to be publicly revealed! Oh. Wait.

QAnon Website Shuts Down After N.J. Man Identified as Operator

(Bloomberg) — A popular website for posts about the conspiracy group QAnon abruptly shut down after a fact-checking group identified the developer as a New Jersey man.

Qmap.pub is among the largest websites promoting the QAnon conspiracy, with over 10 million visitors in July, according to web analytics firm SimilarWeb Ltd., and served as the primary archive of QAnon’s posts. The website aggregates posts by Q, the anonymous figure behind the QAnon theory, and the creator of the Qmap.pub website is known online only as “QAppAnon.”

The fact-checking site logically.ai identified Jason Gelinas of New Jersey on Sept. 10 as the “developer and mouthpiece” for the site. New Jersey state records connect QAppAnon to Gelinas’s home address, Bloomberg found.

Gelinas is, or was, an information security analyst at Citigroup.

Both of which coalesced when Thiel Merry with them. They’ve since splintered and Thiel stopped funding them. They hoped Thiel would be their George Soros. Thankfully he didn’t. But this is who Thiel is.
