“That Lonesome Road” from Tanglewood, with the Tanglewood Festival Choir.

LYRICS
Walk down that lonesome road
All by yourself
Don’t turn your head
Back over your shoulder
And only stop
To rest yourself
When the silver moon
Is shining high above the trees

If I had stopped to listen
Once or twice
If I had closed my mouth
And opened my eyes

If I had cooled my head
And warmed my heart
I’d not be on this road tonight

Carry on
Never mind feeling sorry for yourself
It doesn’t save you from your troubled mind

Walk down that lonesome road
All by yourself
Don’t turn your head
Back over your shoulder
And only stop
To rest yourself
When the silver moon
Is shining high above the trees

Y’know, maybe I’m misremembering things I read a few months back, but I could have sworn that it was reported that Durham had finished his “report”, and that the AG was just polishing the details before releasing it. And that said release was interpreted (incorrectly, of course) by the starboard claque to be leading to a raft of “indictments” - if not well-publicized trials and lengthy jail sentences - for all those miscreants involved in the “Crime of the Century” of “illegally” “spying” in the Trump 2016 campaign.

So the Durham Report ISN’T done yet?

Not surprising: the Trump gang doesn’t even seem to be competent at ginning up even fake, non-credible “scandals”: so I wonder how this latest iteration of the “October Surprise” is going to be received,

re: #205 Eclectic Cyborg

Oh, and about that BS about Joe Biden being “terrible to Hispanics”?
Perusing the Washington Post (alert: possible paywall issues), I saw they had a link to a Spanish-language ad (“Arroz”) his campaign put out reminded the listeners of Trump’s poor handling of hurricane and earthquake relief for Puerto Rico. Which I think will probably have more relevance to the Hispanic electorate than Bernie Sanders’ “influence”….

Sportsball
Seahawks @ Falcons in Atlanta
Both teams take a knee on the field following the kickoff
There were mixed actions during the national anthem. Falcons looked to all be in locked arms. Seahawks had a number of players kneeling (Black & White) a raised fist, a couple players and staff embraced with heads down

From downstairs:

re: #92 Targetpractice

To morons like Carlson, it’s always been hot and dry in the Pacific Northwest, so prolonged droughts that turn entire forests into tinderboxes is “just something that happens.” Just like how we’re suddenly seeing so many “once in a lifetime” storms popping up left and right, year after year.

Tucker is not a moron — his viewers are. He is a lying, petty, treasonous weasel, just like the President he supports. Let’s not pretend that he’s ignorant — he is evil. The only difference between Trump and Tucker is that Tucker speaks in complete, coherent sentences. Tucker is probably more the 21st Century version of William Buckley.

I have been watching protests all over the country for months. I always supported Black Lives Matter but now I need to be more than an observer.

The Daniel Prude case has hit me as hard as George Floyd. Probably harder because it happened in my city and it was an MHA, with which I’ve had some unfortunate experience. For various reasons I have not gone to the big matches yet, although I want to.

I found out about the nude protests earlier this week and it just struck a chord with me. Maybe because they were smaller. Maybe because the protesters are heavily supported and protected.

So I went this morning. I felt very safe and secure the whole time. The organizers were great. I will do this again. Being (mostly) naked outside and getting uncomfortable from sitting in one position is a minuscule sacrifice. Daniel Prude couldn’t take off the spit hood or move his arms, and he damn sure couldn’t get up and walk away.

The Bay of Pigs was not JFK’s finest hour, to say the least.

CIA IG Lyman Kirkpatrick submitted his report, Survey of the Cuban Operation, in November 1961 (7 months after the fiasco) but it was not de-classified until 1998. The conclusions were scathing:

1. The CIA exceeded its capabilities in developing the project from guerrilla support to overt armed action without any plausible deniability.
2. Failure to realistically assess risks and to adequately communicate information and decisions internally and with other government principals.
3. Insufficient involvement of leaders of the exiles.
4. Failure to sufficiently organize internal resistance in Cuba.
5. Failure to competently collect and analyze intelligence about Cuban forces.
6. Poor internal management of communications and staff.
7.Insufficient employment of high-quality staff.
8. Insufficient Spanish-speakers, training facilities, and material resources.
9. Lack of stable policies and/or contingency plans.

Being a counter-insurgency air type, one thing that has always jumped out at me was the complete failure to understand the threat from the Cuban air force. The CIA analysts were sure, on the basis of nothing in particular, that most of the aircraft left over from the Batista regime would be grounded by lack of spares. They were stupidly wrong, apparently not knowing that a plane does not automatically stop flying because its engine has exceeded its recommended overhaul time. They also assumed that the T-33 jet trainers, of which several were in fact airworthy, were unarmed. Fully engineered armament installations for the T-33 existed, courtesy of the F-80 fighter from which it was derived, but these had not been provided when the aircraft were sold to Batista in 1958. The analysts did not know that it is trivially easy to add this equipment in the field, and the T-33s were decisive in defeating the invasion. Exiles to this day condemn Kennedy for not starting World War III by openly providing the invaders with fighter cover, though the CIA could have provided it covertly if they had realized it was necessary. This would not have made the invasion a success (the invaders were outnumbered 100-1 or more) but it would have allowed them to retreat and escape capture. It was the latter, the capture of the whole bedraggled force, that turned a bad idea into a monumental disaster.

It was bad enough being an enumerator 10 years ago but I could carry a pocket copy of the Constitution along with me and stop most of the complaints in their tracks by reading the census clause (Art. 1, Sec. 2, Clause 3). Then the wingnuts would grumble but comply.

I was surprised to learn that there’s a “Bay of PIgs” veterans’ group, although I suppose I understand in a way.

It just seems to me like this monumental clusterfuck wasn’t something anyone should be proud of, especially not the veterans who were sent into this mess without anything close to the proper preparation.

LIke the Korean and Vietnam veterans organizations, these generally start as support groups. There was a time when veterans of Korea and Vietnam weren’t allowed in VFW’s because they hadn’t been officially declared as wars.

They really didn’t realize how trivial it would be to stick guns in the nose of the T-33? Good lord… Imagine if the hung some AA-2 “Atoll” missiles on it too.

As an aside, I’ve always thought the P-80/T-33/F-94 series were beautiful aircraft that I’d have loved to be able to fly. I have a copy of the P-80 pilots manual and enjoy just reading it and imagining.

Would somebody please tell me how this rates as “dangerous or derogatory content?”

This is getting on my last nerve. Somebody is harassing me with fake reports, and there’s NO WAY to contact Google about it.

How much more would subscribers have to pay to get you free of Adsense?

this is why, even though I consider it useful to have the Senate as a slowdown on the House, I think that the filibuster will need to go as long as McConnell, Cornyn, and McCarthy are in leadership positions.

Just bringing back the real filibuster would probably be enough.

Republicans are planning to lose and already preparing a scorched earth strategy to take as many Americans down as possible.

Yep. Sounds to me like McConnell’s done the math, looked over the GOP’s internal polls and come to the epiphany that there’s a very good chance they’re gonna get their asses handed to them.

So he (and the GOP leadership) will begin laying the groundwork to sabotage an incoming Biden administration and Democratic House and Senate. And I suspect that if the Dems do win it all this November, that GOP effort is going to ramp up exponentially in the time between election day and when the new House/Senate are sworn in.

You would think so; but AFAICR, the abortive Bay of Pigs invasion has been retroactively transformed into a sort of Holy War Crusade: the last attempt to save the Mother Country from the demons of Communism.
That it failed makes little difference to the Cuban Exile community (and even 60 years on, the resentments and revanchism still persists, though a bit attenuated) - it’s a Sacred Lost Cause, and, like many other Lost Causes, will hang around for generations.
And yeah, Operation Pluto was a “monumental clusterfuck” : but CW has always been that the seemingly immovable support for Republicans in the Cuban/Cuban-American community on Florida was, and has always been, based on anger at John Kennedy for not properly “supporting” the invasion.

And to add to what Shiplord Kirel noted in #46: despite all the (indisputably accurate) facts outlined, the fundamental problem (IMO) with the Bay of Pigs debacle was an unresolvable “error” built into the calculations from the get-go: i.e. that the invasion would not/could not reliably succeed without direct US (military) involvement : yet the entire operation was organized and set in motion to try to avoid that necessity.

College rump-football was weird yesterday, with the plague-defying Big 12 in particular taking some embarrassing hits. Iowa State, formerly ranked #23, was decisively defeated by lowly Louisiana-Lafayette, Kansas State lost to even lowlier Arkansas State, and Texas Tech had all they could handle against Houston Baptist, which did not even have a football program until 2013. The Red Rioters did eke out a 35-33 win, but Houston Fucking Baptist? What happens when they play Texas in a couple of weeks?

My wife is from Jonesboro, AR, and attended Arkansas State. I was having to tell her that Kansas is a major football school, so the fact that it was close at halftime was a big thing. And then my wife had trouble believing me that they won.

But, ever since they dropped the Indians as their mascot and became the Red Wolves, they’ve been a fairly consistent team. They upset Texas A&M in the season opener in 2008 in their first game under the new mascot. Since then, they’ve had three coaches move up to bigger schools, right before they would play their bowl game.

Kentucky Democrats outpacing GOP in absentee ballot requests

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Kentucky Democrats have built a big lead over Republicans in requesting absentee ballots for the November election.

But the trend is drawing starkly different reactions from the campaigns of Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and his Democratic challenger, Amy McGrath.

According to the secretary of state’s office, Democrats held a roughly 3-to-1 advantage in absentee ballot requests as of Friday.

McConnell’s campaign is downplaying the GOP’s deficit, saying the primary showed Republicans are more likely to vote in person.

McGrath campaign manager Dan Kanninen says the lopsided gap shows a groundswell of support for change that benefits McGrath.

They just need to word the rules properly, allowing for the full abolition “at the discretion of the majority leader,” or “as determined by a majority vote of the senators.” I’m not sure they could get a rules change passed without some such interim step in it.

Brexit: Buckland says power to override Withdrawal Agreement is ‘insurance policy’

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland has defended plans to potentially override the EU Withdrawal Agreement as an emergency Brexit “insurance policy”.

He told the BBC he hoped powers being sought by ministers in the Internal Markets Bill would never be needed, as a solution could be found with the EU.

He said he would resign if the UK ended up breaking international law “in a way I find unacceptable”.

But he made clear he did “not believe we will get to that stage”.

Threatening to break a debtor’s kneecaps is just an “insurance policy” in the event they do not pay up full by next week.

It would be a shame if cousin VIto had to do something “inacceptable”…

BIDENZ IS CUMMING FOR YOUR GUNS AND WHEN THE LAST HAS BEEN CONFISCATED, IT’S OFF TO THE FEEMA CAMPZ

If I heard that said in my presence, I’d be like “OK, you do you, but wipe off that gun first. You might shoot your balls off when it slips! Oh, on second thought, let me start Periscope, if you don’t mind….”

It’s … literally not his responsibility to respond to the coronavirus. It’s your boss’s job, Ronna. And he’s failing epically at it.

THIS.

Even if Joe said at the beginning that he wants to see a mask mandate and a national testing program and robust contract tracing and direct payments to all Americans through years end…HE DIDN’T HAVE THE POWER TO IMPLEMENT ANY OF THAT.

It’s like me being upset that someone who doesn’t work at my company wasn’t able to convince my boss to give me a raise.

One of my major gripes about the Senate is how a SINGLE SENATOR can block and kill a bill that would otherwise pass. It should take a lot more than one to torpedo that shit.

I think it’s brilliant strategizing. Really. Ronna knows that the press will go bothsides from now til forever. Those members of the press smart enough to avoid bothsiderism, will spend an extended “leave of absence’” in one of Trump’s camps when he’s elected.

The rest of the press will bothsides from now until Trump formalizes his takeover.

On Trump, NEVER say, “That’s stupid!” Not because it isn’t stupid, but because Ronna and every other Republican has interests that don’t include the public. Interests that require them to put a certain frame on reporting. Bothesidesism. People will equate Biden with Trump no matter what, even if Biden is a private citizen.

Does not matter.

If you can’t see the Sunday talk shows as a way to force the narrative, if you think those shows are really meant to inform, you shouldn’t be watching. I don’t. Stephanopoulous seems to be a good person, unlike his peers at NBC and CBS, but he’s still playing the game.

Time: “This matters not just because of what these voters believe but also because of what they don’t. The facts that should anchor a sense of shared reality are meaningless to them; the news developments that might ordinarily inform their vote fall on deaf ears. They will not be swayed by data on coronavirus deaths, they won’t be persuaded by job losses or stock market gains, and they won’t care if Trump called America’s fallen soldiers ‘losers’ or ‘suckers,’ as the Atlantic reported, because they won’t believe it. They are impervious to messaging, advertising or data. They aren’t just infected with conspiracy; they appear to be inoculated against reality.”

a good summary from a rando:

Screwing around with voter suppression, as in the felon fees in Florida, only affects a fraction of 1% of the vote. Not enough for Trump. Outright cheating is even less likely, since Democrats control the vote counting in enough states to secure over 270 EC votes for Biden, as long as people turn out*.

This concern is all being promoted by the fact, in the year of the pandemic, a much larger percentage of Democrats than Republican are going to vote by mail. In a typical election year, that would not be true. Trump and Barr are doing everything in their power to undermine our system. And certain Republican governors and state legislatures may be totally onboard with implementing processes to assist in a Trump victory.

217
dangerman  Sep 13, 2020 • 3:25:48pm

trump’s at like 43% nationally
he needs 7-10 points behind biden
he needs a slew of new supporters
there arent that many ‘undecideds’ - maybe 6% tops - and he wont get them all

focusing on his maskless base is meaningless. they’re the 43. he’s got them.
and they’re not enough by themselves to give him the win

in ‘16 he got lucky with the EC and a popular vote of 46%

not a chance with 43

Doesn’t each state certify its own results? As in, who cares what it claims, it’s the states that decide what counts as timely ballots as well as when they are satisfied with their counting of them, and until the state says so, there is no official result from that state, no matter what TV talking heads or candidates may claim?
