New Audio Excerpts From Woodward’s Book: Trump Says, “Nothing More Could Have Been Done” About COVID as He Obsesses Over the Stock Market

Politics • Views: 19,073

YouTube

There’s nothing really surprising here — we all knew Trump is a delusional narcissist after all — but it’s still remarkably disgusting to hear him speak about this when he thinks the public won’t hear him.

Bottom line: Donald Trump’s failure to deal with COVID-19 was not a mistake and it wasn’t a fluke. He chose exactly the wrong path at every turn, deliberately — because he simply feels nothing for the citizens of this country. The only important thing to him, ever, in all this horrible mess, was getting re-elected. And he thought he could do this by lying to the public about the extent of this killer disease. He let hundreds of thousands of people die deliberately, with full knowledge.

More could have been done.

Trump could have moved heaven and earth to get testing kits to NYC metro to contain spread before it killed 10s of thousands, including 2 people I knew, all while sickening tens of thousands more.

He could have pushed nationwide masking/social distancing mandates that would slow spread and given time to contain small pockets of outbreaks without causing economy to collapse. He could have followed the fucking playbook he inherited. He could have not disbanded the pandemic prevention teams (supposedly cost cutting measure, which looks pathetic now that we’re spending trillions to try and prop up the economy and it teeters on the precipe of another collapse because the nation still knows covid19 is a threat).

Most Americans know covid19 is serious and deadly real. Trump’s know nothing base doesn’t care, and that has dire repercussions. Trump hasn’t addressed domestic or international air travel. He loves to tout that he shut down travel to China and Europe, except that he didn’t. He has no screening or mandated rules on masking/social distancing on flights, that would help improve air safety for passengers and crew alike - along with a sense of consistency around airlines dealing with the problem of unruly Trumpists who refuse to mask up and make scenes and cause mayhem and delays.

Trump’s done absolutely everything wrong, and we got containment in many parts of the country despite Trump and his know nothing base. The same people attacking Cuomo for shutting down the state are attacking Cuomo for nursing home deaths (at a time when Trump refused to make more tests available or refused to move resources ASAP to NYC). NY was coping with a mass casualty event, and Trump was too busy golfing to care.

Same as now.

He doesn’t care.

I have a colleague who had to drive from NY to WY after visiting family. They drove through the Dakotas. Not a single person to be seen wearing masks in stores/businesses. It’s as though they think covid isn’t a thing (it is).

It’s close to 100% here in Colorado. That’s because we have a statewide mask mandate. Most, if not all businesses won’t let you through the front door if you don’t have a mask.

My county is (was) high on the list for numbers of new cases, my state is California, but in my little town of 122,000, we’ve had a total of six deaths. I attribute it to early and near-total compliance with masking rules.

Texas went on lockdown early. The governor tried to keep from having to do the mask order, but finally gave in. Mask wearing went from about 40% to over 90% after his order.

When the quotes from Woodward’s book first dropped last week and we heard that Donny didn’t want to “cause a panic,” it was pointed out that the panic he really wanted to avoid was in the stock market. And I pointed out how he didn’t seem to deviate from that course until the markets reacted to the states/cities taking action by shitting the bed.

If you really think about it, his aversion to shutdowns and masks makes total sense as efforts to keep the markets happy. Especially when you notice that the markets really began their “recovery” in the weeks leading up to Memorial Day and have only gotten shaky whenever there’s been the suggestion that lockdowns could happen again or profits/productivity might undershoot estimates due to consumer shakiness.

The whole plan/goal of Donny trying to play down the severity of CV-19 and avoiding shutdowns had to do with worries (since justified) that if people stayed home due to businesses being closed or avoided open businesses because of masks, then the markets would take a shit and rob him of his “GREATEST ECONOMY EVAH!!!!” talking point for reelection. It was a calculated gamble…by a guy who is seriously bad at math.

My corner of South Jersey seems to have its shit together regarding mask wearing.

Not everyone though. We just tried a new pizza place a few weeks ago. The second time I went in there, there’s this little old guy with no mask off to the side of the register, making small chat with every (masked) customer who comes in.

The kid behind the register was wearing a mask, and old dude was at least 10 feet from the counter. Still, he had a little bit of a COVIDiot-esque smirk on his face.

If he’s there next time I order, I’m going to ask “Y U NO MASK?” Quite frankly, depending on the answer, I may stop going there.

Also, I’m worried my dentist neighbor is in the whole “Yeah, it’s just a flu” camp. He said they’ve got all sorts of protocols in place, but he dropped in a little aside about “You know, such and such virus lasts 9 months longer than COVID on surfaces.”

I was honestly too unsure of what he was saying to respond. He also had his 3 year old with him, so it probably wasn’t the best time to challenge him if was going Full Metal No Big Deal.

You’re out of luck, you’re out of luck
Ship is sinking

Who are the ones that we kept in charge?
Killers, thieves, and lawyers
God’s away, God’s away
God’s away on business
Business
God’s away, God’s away
God’s away on business
Business
Digging up the dead with a shovel and a pick
It’s a job, it’s a job
Bloody moon rising with a plague and a flood
Join the mob, join the mob
It’s all over, it’s all over, it’s all over
And there’s a leak, there’s a leak, in the boiler room
The poor, the lame, the blind
Who are the ones that we kept in charge?
Killers, thieves, and lawyers
God’s away, God’s away, God’s away
On Business

On Business
Business, ha
Goddamn there’s always such a big temptation
To be good, to be good
There’s always free cheddar in a mousetrap, baby
It’s a deal, it’s a deal
God’s away, God’s away, God’s away
On business
Business
God’s away, God’s away, God’s away

Here’s the truth. He was unable to lead because he finally got a crisis that he couldn’t weasel out of. This is the natural coincidence of wanting a “straight talker who tells things as they are”, “an outsider”, and a “successful businessman.” Trump having zero elected experienced should have been a huge warning to people but it wasn’t. They just wanted the fresh meat about the wall, the Clintons, and whatever else was chipping Trump’s asshole at the moment.

A couple of reasons I can think of:
1. We have a lot of people here not originally from Texas, or even the United States. That gives us way more viewpoints.
2. I’m sure businesses started telling Abbott that the only way people were going to go back to buying and selling was if people wore masks.

re: #49 Backwoods_Sleuth

here in TheBackwoods forestland, most times when a tree falls, it just rots down to excellent spongy compost.

Trees here generally “explode” when struck by lightning.

Pretty sure it works the same way in most of forests in this hemisphere.

Closest I have ever been to an exploding tree is about a quarter of a mile. Lightning hit a maybe 30 or 40 foot pine tree. I was inside with windows closed and dang it was LOUD. Next day went looking for it - it was pretty obvious which tree got ‘sploded. But what do I know - maybe it exploded cuz nobody had been raking the woods near that tree.

We were on the receiving end of a lightning strike in the back yard a few years ago, maybe 200 feet away, tops. It sounded like a bomb going off - which, given the damage, it pretty much was. The next morning, there was 3/4 of a tree laying in our yard, along with a bunch of wood shards.

I found these orange tabby kittens under the stairwell outside my apartment with a bowl of water, clearly dumped there. There were 5 but I was able to find 3 of them homes and have two females remaining. I have reached out to rescues in the city but no luck with any of them being able to take them in. I am unable to keep them due to pet limits in my complex and an older cat that has not been friendly to them.

I lived in Massachusetts at the time, not exactly an arid area - those pine trees had a LOT of sap. I understand that it’s the sap being rapidly boiled that blows up the tree. “The investigation is focused on events in February, according to the two sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity, when prosecutors for Stone have said they were told to seek a lighter sentence for Stone than they had previously considered.”

“Attorney General William Barr ultimately intervened to override the prosecutors’ recommendation of seven to nine years and ask for a lighter sentence. All four prosecutors quit the case as a result.”

Biden’s been pretty consistently leading in Arizona since March. Biden seems to be gaining in Iowa, but it’s probably still leaning Trump. I don’t think Nevada was ever really in play. Ohio is probably a toss up at this point. And there’s only been one poll out of Pennsylvania since the end of May that showed Trump with a lead.

Nope, but the house isn’t the tallest thing in its nearby neighborhood, either. It’s more likely to hit the tree in the front yard, which is also much closer. Also, looking out the back window at the trees down the hill, they actually just might be taller than the house.

Trump would be in deep trouble, trying to win in places like Az, Nv, Mn, NC, and NH. I don’t think he has a path to actual victory. I think his play is to hope he leads in enough states on November 3 to declare “victory”, then try to stop the count of mailed in ballots due to “fraud” and get state GOP officials to appoint Trump electors or at least block Biden electors so that the election is thrown to the House, where he has an edge.

strictly by polls and the EC and ignoring election shenanigans, as im reading it, on electoral-vote.com tipping point state page:

IA and AK are within 2 points so MOE either way - virtual ties.
TX and NC are within 1, so ditto moreso.
If trump doesnt hold all 4 he’s toast.

If he does, THEN he’s got to get through GA and FL before AZ (or NV) would even start to matter.

THEN to even approach 270 he needs GA, FL, AZ, NH, NV and OH

In PA Biden is +5%.
WI, MI, MN are 6 points or more right now.
Everyone’s committed. It’s fantasy to think he could swing 5+% from Biden in the amount of time left. (imo)

re: #151 NO SMOCKING GUN!

Yeah I just don’t see that working out for him. It wouldn’t be the first time we didn’t know the outcome of an election immediately and everytime he’s tried to cry fraud, it’s backfired on him.

That’s pretty good, as I was just reading a report earlier today that they were leaning on forcing the state to put Hawkins on the ballot, which would invalidate all ballots already mailed and put the crunch on the state to get new ballots printed and mailed before the legal deadline.

Nope, but the house isn’t the tallest thing in its nearby neighborhood, either. It’s more likely to hit the tree in the front yard, which is also much closer. Also, looking out the back window at the trees down the hill, they actually just might be taller than the house.

Well-grounded masts offer something called “the cone of protection”. Imagine a pole or tree, extend a line on the ground twice its height, and make that the radius of a circle. Anything that stays inside the cone described from the top to that circumference is (probably) protected. Except when it’s an ammunition magazine and the magic doesn’t work. It’s one of those models that work best with perfectly spherical cows.

strictly by polls and the EC and ignoring election shenanigans, as im reading it, on electoral-vote.com tipping point state page:

(imo)

I think the first time that the media called a state “wrong” (or, in this case, too early) was in 2000 with FL. Here’s the thing: It’s really easy to see if increased testing is responsible for increased positives. The question to ask yourself is, “Is the percentage of new infections rising, falling, or staying the same, as the testing increases?” If it is rising, that means your testing is playing catch-up to an undiscovered hot-spot, possibly due to targeted testing; if it’s falling, it means that your previous testing was inadequate, and the percentage of new positives was erroneously low. If it stays the same, then your previous testing was adequate and your new testing is the reason for the increased positives.

Exactly. He’s in a terrible way right now. He already had a low ceiling of support as demonstrated last time and it’s going to be more difficult because the third party candidates won’t be able to help him. In a two person race, I easily see Biden getting over 50% of the PV and I think Biden will be closer to 55% than Trump will 50%.

certainly true
and of course i;m not an expert
and 538’s model is different from electoral-vote.com for sure
i think it’s both - the closeness of the polls and the nearness to the tipping point

i’ll reiterate
there’s 50 days to the election
the polls - state and nationwide, and the candidate favorability/unfavorability ratings have been pretty rock solid all along.
that includes the 4-6% divided between undecided and third party.
hell trump’s been rock solid for 4 years.

using wisconsin as an example, trump needs 5.8 points to turn the state pollwise.
- there’s only 1% undecided. give him 100% of that though it’s not likely.
- then he needs to turn 4.8% of actual biden voters into trump voters
- that’s something like 134k voters changing their mind from biden to trump in these next 50 days.

it’s an awfully tall order because there’s no untapped market to target.
(i havent considered first time voters because current polling should cover them)

so i’m not sure i’m worried about him turning that many biden voters
and that’s just one state.

dont a lot (most?) positives get retested relatively quickly that the numbers would be adjusted for the false positives?

I know that if election day was tomorrow, that Biden would legitimately win an EC landslide. That doesn’t mean that FFVCS won’t try every trick in the book to steal it though.

So we need to not give him any opportunities to do so, and spazzy white guys on CNN and MSNBC who treat the election like it’s the NFL playoffs calling states at 8pm EST Nov 3 when most ballots aren’t counted yet is one way to give Trump exactly one of those opportunities.

I am far more worried about the latter than the former. If another Republican asshole - one with brains - comes in while we are in the process of recovering, we’re doomed. But if we can ensure that their power to do damage is limited and we can recover safely, then making plans to actually do the recovery are much easier. Republicans aren’t likely to work with Biden on much of anything, so we’ve got to make it count.

Which I think is a big part of the reason why people are engaged in all sorts of speculation about what lengths he’ll go to in order to not only steal the election, but retain power if his efforts to win “legitimately” should fail.

People are glued to their tvs or computers on the night of the election trying to decipher what the incomplete results mean. Each media company wants to be first in predicting which candidate won any particular state. And even partial results can have an impact: people out west may decide not to vote if the numbers in certain eastern states suggest a particular outcome appears guaranteed. I don’t know the best way to prevent a possible disaster because mail-in votes are not counted until several days later.

Let’s just hope that the night of the election shows an overwhelming Biden victory to discourage any claims that may arise if Trump is ahead on election night but ultimately loses when all votes are tallied.

“I don’t,” Cruz responded. “It is deeply honoring, it’s humbling to be included in the list … but it’s not the desire of my heart. I want to be in the political fight.”

Note, he did not say he wanted to serve the public or represent the great state of Texas in the Senate. No, he wants to be in the FIGHT. This is the Republican view of governing, and it’s been a problem long before Trump rode down that escalator.*

I think it’s plausible we’ll see him show up for the first debate, if only because his ego will demand it. But short of Biden dissolving into a dribbling mess, the media is not likely to be able to sell it convincingly as a “win” for Trump no matter how low the bar is lowered. And that’s when he’ll declare his refusal to participate in any further debates, at which point it will be spun as Biden’s “fault.”

It is still an amazing thing to me is that, during the 2016 primary season, Trump skipped one of the GOP debates, claiming - of course - it wasn’t FAIR!!, and held some kind of event that was supposed to bring in money for veterans.

Months later, David Farenthold starts inquiring with the Trump campaign about where the money went. It had gone nowhere. In a moment of obvious panic, they quickly donated it to the first veteran-related charity they could find.

What’s amazing to me is that these stories, which paint such a clear picture of Trump’s lack of caring about veterans, or indeed anyone but himself, never gain any footing with his followers.

So now we’re down to just two states - NV and AZ - and a vanishingly small number of theoretical hesitant undecided voters who won’t have made up their minds by 7 PM MT on the last day of voting season?

This reminded me of an incident back in 2003 here in Arizona. The then Catholic bishop of Phoenix, Thomas O’Brien, hit a man crossing one of our major streets here. And then he drove off, because he thought he hit a DOG, or a CAT, or a ROCK. (This is complete and utter horseshit, IMHO.) If you’ve ever looked at a map of the Phoenix area, you’ll see that it is, for the most part, a grid system with one mile spacing. However, there are usually no lights between the one-mile intersections. O’Brien hit Jim Reed just shy of the intersection of Glendale and 19th Ave up on the northwest side. He was sentenced to four years probation and 1,000 hours of community service.

I’m just sharing this article to show how utterly disgusting and crass O’Brien’s family and friends were about the verdict.

Fast forward to today. Enjoying my mid-afternoon blueberry snack. Gave one to Teddy. He looked at me like I was poisoning him. Remembered why I don’t share my berries.

Even weirder is the fact that Teddy is now a Tropical Storm…

Seriously I don’t know where hte Trumpers get the idea that Trump somehow is going to land this knockout blow on Biden at the debates. Clinton beat Trump at the debates last time and Biden isn’t exactly inexperienced at debating. I do wondering who is playing Trump in the prep though heh.

Don’t know (they’re being pretty closed mouth about it) And who the fuck knows what the vulgar talking yam is up to in his debate prep:

August 9—The team agreed to meet at least every 10 days or so between now and the first debate, according to two sources familiar with the results of the meeting.

August 23—“The president said he’s already prepping for the debates. Are you?” Muir asked.

September 4—President Trump is taking a new approach to the upcoming presidential debates by doing something he didn’t in 2016: prep work.

September 9—The president has dismissed the typical debate preparations he participated in four years ago, joking to aides and allies that he’s been preparing for debates since he was born. His ability to fire back at an opponent in real time, he’s argued, “isn’t something you have to practice.”

Right. Who can forget how effectively he countered HRC calling him “Putin’s Puppet” with the rapier-like comeback of “No puppet! No puppet! You’re the puppet!”

At my local youth center back in the ’80s, we had a guy spell out a designated delivery area as “STPO.” We also have a current resident along the main highway advertising a house “For Sail.”

I’m pretty sure Antifa caused that dent.

I’m betting Jack Danial’s did.
