Here’s a tech college president, aged 56, who died of COVID-19 in Georgia. It sounds like he was a real benefit to his community and I’m sure his death leaves a hole.

North Georgia Technical College President Mark Ivester desperately wanted to attend a drive-thru ceremony on campus last month for spring and summer graduates, but he learned some family members had been diagnosed with COVID-19 and he wasn’t feeling well himself.

Ivester went to the hospital a few days later. He didn’t make it home.

The dreadful state of the Trump administration and the GOP is highlighted by the depressing fact that some deplorable nut job in the administration allegedly sterilizing every non-white immigrant detainee woman he can get his hands on is completely in character.

Decades of right wing raving about ‘anchor babies’ can be expected to have pathological consequences in true believers in this shit.

My parents referred to the NBA in a similar way in the 1980s.

Strangely, or perhaps not, I remember my parents both being awfully racist when I was a kid, but they seemed to become less so as they got older. They are still two white (or rather one white, and one white/native american mix) boomers pushing 70 who probably will never full “get there” but them becoming “better” on race while becoming more conservative on other things I always thought was a little weird.

RELEASE DATE FOR THE EXPANSE SEASON 5

While we are glad that The Expanse will not face the excruciating problem due to the pandemic as the production had wrapped up by February 2020 and we can expect to see the show returning by December 2020.

However, The Expanse requires alot of special effects which make the show the way it is so it might take a while for makers to get done with that, but we see no reason for a delay in season 5.

The intercept capability of C-RAM is effectively a land version of weapons such as the Phalanx CIWS radar-controlled rapid-fire gun for close-in protection of vessels from missiles; the weapon system also contains a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) camera to allow a soldier to visually identify these target threats before engaging the targets. One major difference between the land- and sea-based variants is the choice of ammunition. Whereas naval Phalanx systems fire tungsten armor-piercing rounds, the C-RAM uses the 20mm HEIT-SD (high-explosive incendiary tracer, self-destruct) ammunition, originally developed for the M163 Vulcan air defense system.

The Panhandle has moved to Phase 4, moving to the phase with lessened restrictions on Friday. Tabi Prochazka, deputy director for health prepardeness and promotions, called it a “myth” that the phase means that we can move to a “pre-COVID life.”

In fact, she said, because restrictions have decreased, it increases our personal responsibility to ensure that we are taking the necessary measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

Panhandle Public Health District announced twenty-six new cases, and one new death in Scottsbluff (bringing the total of deaths to eight, and the first in several months, PPHD will not update its dashboard until tomorrow afternoon).

It makes sense therefore to reduce restrictions further and just count on everyone to “do the right thing.”

The change to Phase 4 does eliminate restrictions on gatherings at churches, requirements to wear masks at places such as salons, and other restrictions. However, indoor gatherings remain limited to 75% of occupancy. Outdoor gatherings are allowed to be at 100% occupancy. Organizers of events that will have more than 500 people or venues with occupancy of more than 500 people continue to be required to complete an approval process through PPHD that examines health and safety efforts by planners.

PPHD announced 26 new COVID-19 cases, one additional death (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald, more at the link)

Gee, we could have a Trump Coronapalooza rally here now. Altar calls to meet Jesus early.

Women remain 2/3 of cases (still an anomaly), and most infected age groups remain 40-49 followed by 20-29.

The dashboard is still messed up, with age ten as its own age group, but the 1899 date age group now removed.

Donald Trump Jr. visits Omaha, western Iowa to stump for dad as Biden buys local ad time Omaha World-Herald

TREYNOR, Iowa — Donald Trump Jr. toured a west Omaha gun club Monday before speaking here to a packed house of Trump fans about his dad’s reelection run.

His visit was the latest example of how Nebraska’s largest city and surrounding areas have become targets in the presidential race. Four days earlier, President Donald Trump’s campaign sent his daughter-in-law, Lara, on an Omaha-Council Bluffs swing for the GOP incumbent.

Meanwhile, the campaign of Democrat Joe Biden said it would start airing TV commercials in Omaha on Tuesday, three weeks sooner than planned. Also on Tuesday, Biden’s campaign plans an online visit with civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, who organized farmworkers with Cesar Chavez, and State Sen. Tony Vargas of Omaha.

At stake is the single electoral vote awarded in Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District, the state’s most competitive district, which includes all of Douglas County and western Sarpy County.

Scientists Discover Area Of Brain That Controls Sexual Desire In Men…(All of it,
where’s my millions!?!?!)

A new discovery is opening the door to treating sexual dysfunction in men. Doctors from Northwestern University’s School of Medicine say a specific gene in the brain regulates sexual desire, making it possible for scientists to increase or decrease these impulses.

Researchers say the key is a gene called aromatase. In a certain area of the brain, this gene converts testosterone to estrogen and helps the male sex drive. Until now, scientists weren’t sure how big of a role aromatase played in this process.
“This is the first key finding to explain how testosterone stimulates sexual desire,” senior author Dr. Serdar Bulun says in a media release. “For the first time, we demonstrated conclusively that the conversion of testosterone to estrogen in the brain is critical to maintain full sexual activity or desire in males. Aromatase drives that.”

No. When three prominent Republicans have called for violence to keep Trump in power the last few days, and Trump himself keeps insisting the voting is rigged, so we know he will not concede defeat, we are not being over the top.

Firefighters responded in Bílina na Teplicku due to a fire and explosions of stored ammunition in the police complex. Evacuation of people up to a distance of 500 meters was ordered.

In the first moments after the announcement of the incident, the police did not let the firefighters into the area. “We currently have seven units on site, that’s twelve vehicles,” said Milan Rudolf, a spokesman for the regional fire brigade.

“We are in front of the complex behind a high concrete wall and we are starting firefighting work. We are cooling the area and the site is being evacuated. The cause of the fire cannot be determined at this time, Rudolf told CNN Prima News before 2 p.m.

“Teplice police officers, together with the fire brigade, intervened in the fire of a rented warehouse in Bílina, which is used by the Pyrotechnic Service of the Policie Česká Republika (PCR) to store discarded ammunition. The area has been evacuated and a fire is currently being put out. The circumstances of the incident will be the subject of further investigation,” the police said on Twitter.

The ammunition depot is in the Chudeřice area north of the center of Bílina in the direction of Teplice. The I/13 road leads here, connecting the towns below the Ore Mountains. The road is closed at the entrance to Bílina, the detour route leads through Kostomlaty or Braňany. It was necessary to evacuate part of the Teplice Suburbs and the Czechoslovak Army Street.

According to Bílina Mayor Zuzana Schwarz-Bařtipánová, inhabited houses are more than 500 meters away from warehouses, so there has been no evacuation of citizens from their place of residence. Only the glassworks in Chudeřice, the local companies and the Municipal Technical Service of Bílina were evacuated.

In an interview with CNN Prima News, Schwarz-Bártipánová stated that until the moment of the explosion, she had no idea that there were any ammunition depots in place.

According to the mayor’s information, no one was injured. The rescue service of the Ústí Region did not have to respond, said its spokesman Prokop Voleník.

Nebraska GOP ready to boot Republican senator who accused Trump of “white supremacy” (Salon)

Senator McCollister describes himself as centre-right.

The Nebraska Republican Party called for Republican state Sen. John McCollister to register as a Democrat after he wrote that the GOP is “enabling white supremacy.”

Ryan Hamilton, the head of the state Republican Party, called for McCollister to “tell the truth about his partisan views and re-register as a Democrat” on Monday after he called out the party for being “complicit” to “obvious racist and immoral activity inside our party.”

More. Ryan Hamilton is the state GOP chair. In a nice display of passive-aggression, he mailed Senator McCollister a voter registration form to his office so he can change his party to Democratic.

Hamilton’s statement came just months after he vowed to crack down on racism in the party after an aide to Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts was caught posting wildly racist, anti-Semitic, and homophobic comments on a far-right YouTube page run by a far-right activist labeled a white nationalist.

Axios: “To his diehard supporters, Trump isn’t just a candidate. He’s a lifestyle choice and a vehicle for self-expression — a way to continually flip the middle finger at big media, big business, big government … anything big.”

When I was stationed in Spain in the early Nineties, Andalucia was suffering from a long-term drought. The Navy listed Rota as hardship duty then; the city had water rationing in place when I arrived. (Water was shut off between 1900 and 0600 to homes every night.)

That area of Spain has lots of forest land just north of the coast, with lots of cork trees. It’s amazing how fast a cork tree goes up in flames or explodes in a forest fire.

Yes, aromatase is an enzyme (see Wikipedia).

Reading up on that enzyme says it is indeed implicated in gynecomastia in men.

It is encoded by genes on chromosome 15.

Vicky Phelan appeals for politicians to support bill on assisted dying (RTÉ, Ireland)

Campaigner Vicky Phelan has appealed to politicians to support the “Dying with Dignity Bill” that will be reintroduced in the Dáil tomorrow.

People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny has brought a bill on assisted dying in Ireland back on the political agenda in recent weeks.

At a press conference this afternoon, Ms Phelan said people with terminal illnesses should be given the choice to die.

“No matter how good palliative care is, there is still a certain amount of suffering that palliative care often cannot get on top of,” she said.

“I have two young children and I’m going to die within the next few years and I don’t want my children’s last memories to be of me dying in pain.

“I want to make that choice.”

Just when you thought you knew your computer brands…

To borrow the opening from The Outer Limits, there is nothing wrong with your display, do not attempt to adjust the picture. Yes, there are actually new Gateway PCs on the market, wrapped in cow-spotted packaging like the old days (as in, two decades ago). And they are only available at Walmart.

Some of you reading this might not remember Gateway, serving as a sobering reminder that I’m getting old. Gateway predates The Simpsons by several years, coming into existence in 1985 and maintaining a significant presence in the PC market through the 1990s, and early 2000s. Then the hard times hit, and in 2007 Acer snatched up Gateway for $710 million.

The Gateway brand never entirely disappeared, but its presence was certainly diminished, and I imagine largely forgotten by many. Be that as it may, Acer is looking to leverage the brand with a new lineup of laptops, 2-in-1 systems, and even a couple of tablets.

Walmart is selling Gateway PCs and no, the year is not 1999

Toilet paper is back on store shelves. But you may not recognize some of the brands.

Demand for toilet paper has been so high during the pandemic that in order to keep their shelves stocked, retailers are buying up foreign toilet paper brands, mostly from Mexico. Major chains, across the country, including CVS, Piggly Wiggly, Safeway, 7-Eleven and others, are carrying the international brands.

In recent weeks, a CVS in New York has been selling three Mexican brands: Regio, Hoteles Elite and Daisy Soft. Mexico’s Petalo was on the shelves of a Piggly Wiggly in Sister Bay, Wisconsin. And a Safeway supermarket in Fremont, California, had those same brands, plus Vogue, whose label says in Spanish that it smells like chamomile.

A former Omaha TV meteorologist who threatened to “lynch” and slit the throat of Douglas County Health Director Adi Pour has taken a plea deal.

Ronald G. Penzkowski, who went by the name Ron Gerard, pleaded no contest on Friday to two counts of third-degree assault and was found guilty by a judge. Monday, he pleaded no contest to stalking and was found guilty.

Third-degree assault and stalking are misdemeanors. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail.

Penzkowski, 57, initially had been charged with terroristic threats, a felony.

He will be sentenced next month and in November.

Yes, not all Christians.

As I said above, I haven’t heard of any Jewish or Hindu groups which consistently, every year, claim Hallowe’en is an atheistic satanic holiday which warps the minds of children and leads them astray.

And some people attempt to cancel the holiday, such as noted religion counter-apologist Stewart Varney /s.

Anyway, Varney is lying.

I just had a realization: For some white people, the only source of pride they have is in what they believe to be their inherent superiority to non-white people.

They can’t otherwise find a purpose in or contribute to society, but they would never accept being on the bottom rung of the ladder so to them, the poorest white man is a more desirable friend and ally than the most successful black man and as long as whites are “superior” they by default have someone beneath them on the societal totem pole.

Even if they’re white trash losers.

Trick-or-treating in a pandemic should be discouraged.

Thanksgiving is one of the most heavily-travelled holidays in the year. Moreover, it gathers large crowds of people together in homes closer together than restaurants.

If 162 is true, then 160 should also be true.

Experts advise rethinking Thanksgiving traditions as COVID-19 cases increase (Chicago Daily Herald, nineteen hours ago)

Statistics, then:

Given that, now’s a good time to hit the reset button on your traditional Thanksgiving feast with extended family and friends, experts advise.

Sitting unmasked in proximity with people at a table for a lengthy period means “a high risk of transmission,” Pinsky said.

“I think there’s risk involved having Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends.”

Instead, consider finding an activity to do together that doesn’t involve eating, or consider seating guests apart from each other, preferably outside, he advised.

Mayor Lightfoot wants to cancel traditional trick-or-treating given that it’s not a particularly good idea in the year of the plague for kids to be knocking on people’s doors asking for candy. Many homeowners are not enthusiastic about answering their doors at this time. And the speaker did allege that the next holiday on the hit list was Thanksgiving because the authorities might try to limit the number of people you can have at your dinner table.

This is all on Trump and his continuing refusal to treat the pandemic as a serious threat to human lives and health. There would not be this persistent pushback against health measures if he had been supportive from day one. Yes, libertarians would probably voice disapproval, but without Trump’s megaphone they would have had little impact.

Fox has been going on about religion for many years, particularly against atheists and Muslims. It fits the GOP, which does the same.

This is an apologetics talking point which has been around for generations. It is false.

You know, about 60 years ago, secularists started telling us that, as a nation, we could be good without God. And so we tried to pass along values without the undergirding spiritual foundation for that, and it’s been a complete wreck.

You know, somebody said socialism works until you run out of other people’s money. Well, secularism works until you run out of other people’s faith, and, as a nation, we can’t live on the faith of three generations ago. We have to embrace faith and pass it on to our children.

A former longtime pastor for a Lynn parish, who had been accused in 2012 of sexually abusing a child, has been found guilty by a Roman Catholic judicial court and sentenced to “a life of Prayer and Penance,” the Archdiocese of Boston announced in a statement Thursday.

“He may not provide spiritual direction, may not wear clerical attire and cannot function in any manner as a priest,” the statement read. “He is to live in contemplation of his sins and pray for all of those affected by his conduct.”

The 3000 member church, ordered to pay $112,750 in fines for defying the local public health order over a period of only a few weeks, (such as $52,750 in a nine-day period), took their Wednesday and Sunday evening service outside after being unable to sustain the heavy burden imposed on them, particularly as the fines began to be escalated to $50,000 per WEEK.

He first argued they had no right to suspend their freedom of assembly, then pleaded with them to relieve the fines, then caved and went to outdoor services with people remaining in their cars.

The $112,750 in tithing money which would have gone to the church will now be sent to the city.

I need a new laptop, but Wal*mart is right out.

I’ll get a new one at the same computer shop in Scottsbluff I bought my HP at.

I just picked up one of the HP Envy x360 notebooks from Costco.
These are the new models with the AMD Ryzen 4000 series CPU - dual mode notebook/tablet for under $800 that’s been getting rave reviews. There’s higher-end notebooks out there, but for what I’m using it for it ticks all the needed checkboxes and so far have no complaints at all.

Wow - real tough penalties there for child sex-abuse: basically, “turn in your collar and get lost”?
And what’s to stop Fr. Rev. Mr. Gaudreau from simply moving to another state and opening a day-care center?*

*OK, exaggeration. Slightly. I hope.

The archbishop narc’ed him and is laying more on him than the state did.

The one comment on the article is conservaderp and religioderp:

Thousands of deluded and often feral individuals are coddled and protected by the state as they take to the streets to riot, destroy, loot, and beat/kill innocents over serial felons getting themselves killed while resisting arrest, yet the state brings their mighty weight and wrath against God-fearing people worshipping Almighty God. What country is this?

a) You mean the white supremacists.
b) Resisting arrest does not carry the death penalty by Judge Dredd cops.
c) If your god can only be worshipped in megachurches it’s a pretty puny god.
d) A country that neither permits religious people to sacrifice virgins on altars nor permits feral Christians from sacrificing their neighbours or each other.

I am certainly pro-choice, and have never not been. But around here, when women I know were pregnant (and I never was, unfortunately), their babies were their babies at least by the time they were “showing.” Certainly by the time they were waddling! Yeah, it’s Florida - and still (IMHO) a persistent national shame that every fucking Presidential election we hold in this country still seems to have to come down to who carries this one fucking state - but here we are. And yes, the “Latino” vote is going to be an important swing constituency. Though unfortunately, our “MSM” still seems obsessed with reducing said vote to the obsessive revanchism of the “Cuban Exile” demographic - still pissed at John Kennedy over the Bay Of Pigs, and still (seemingly) wielding outsize political influence in The Sunshine State.

a person can call it anything they like
we all do that
and it’s fine
a kind of metaphor everyone understands what everybody means

public policy debate is different
they are co-opting the word ‘baby’ because of the emotional trigger
they use it medically to mean something it is not
in order to sway opinion to create legislation

it is in this context that a zygote is not a ‘baby’
neither is an embryo, fetus, etc

they also do it with ‘pre-born’, to morph the meaning of ‘born’

it’s all disingenuous intended to make the arguments seem scientific instead of the religious ones they are

Trump sics Barr and the DOJ on Bolton…

(Via NYT) WASHINGTON — The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into whether President Trump’s former national security adviser John R. Bolton unlawfully disclosed classified information when he published a memoir this summer, a case that the department opened after it failed to stop the book’s publication this summer, according to three people familiar with the matter.

The department has convened a grand jury, which issued a subpoena for communications records from Simon & Schuster, the publisher of Mr. Bolton’s memoir, “The Room Where It Happened.” In the book, Mr. Bolton delivered a highly unflattering account of his 17 months working in the Trump administration.

The investigation is a significant escalation in the fraught publication of the book. The Trump administration had sought to stop its publication, accusing Mr. Bolton in a lawsuit of moving forward with publication without receiving final notice that a prepublication review to scrub out classified information was complete. The director of national intelligence referred the matter to the Justice Department last month, two of the people said. John Demers, the head of the department’s national security division, then opened the criminal investigation, according to a person briefed on the case.

Mr. Bolton has denied that he published classified information. Representatives for the Justice Department, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence and the National Security Council declined to comment.

Mr. Bolton’s account of his time working for Mr. Trump and his efforts to get the book published set off a furor. He confirmed elements of the Ukraine scheme that prompted impeachment, wrote that the president was willing to intervene in criminal investigations to curry favor with foreign dictators and said he sought China’s help in winning re-election.

His testimony would not have brought Trump down. Maybe it would have persuaded Lisa and Susan to vote against him — but nah… Certainly not for Ukraine, and Ukraine was all the Democrats had. There wasn’t enough time to do a Kenneth Starr and investigate a whole slew of other improprieties and crimes, especially since the House had no way to get more information on a timely basis due to the WH stonewalling all requests and most witnesses.

Especially since the law says exactly that.

while this ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ is true

note in the last 4 years how many lawsuits trump et al filed arguing whether the plain language of the law said what we all know it said

re: #272 lawhawk

Trump’s again trying to get the DOJ to play personal lawyer for Trump. Bolton gets to spend his money defending against this suit. Fuck Bolton and FT too. Bolton had ability to woman up and testify under oath as to Trump’s lack of character and fitness and criminal wrongdoing, and refused to do so. He wrote a book instead.

Fuck him. Let him spend every dime he was hoping to make on the book defending its publication instead.

it’s part of the publication deal.
no doubt in my mind he and S&S discussed this possibility likelihood before they went ahead.

I bet they’d give you a lively discussion about the difference between clips and magazines.

Not the women I’m talking about; sorry.

further, here’s the likely reason why. Social Programs:

Unlike the official poverty measure, the SPM (Supplemental Poverty Measure) counts income from non-cash programs such as:

- Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program)
- rental assistance
- refundable tax credits for low- and moderate-income families — the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and Child Tax Credit
- Social Security
- unemployment insurance
