In the Dumpster fire that is the Senate race in Nebraska, Chris Janicek was in the Panhandle campaigning. (That is unusual; the only people in either party who ever campaign here, or even visit here, are those running for local office here. The last time we had a statewide anybody in the Panhandle was when Governor Ricketts came to my village to view the total eclipse … he never met anyone in town, going to a friend’s ranch north of town the day before. He left without greeting anyone as soon as the eclipse was over.)

Janicek spent the latter half of the week touring western Nebraska in a bid to unseat U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse. But Janicek is traditionally campaigning while running a very untraditional campaign. His uphill battle to kick Sasse out of Washington D.C. includes more hurdles than the numerical reality of Republican majority in Nebraska.

“I’d probably run as something else, but all those seats are taken,” Janicek told the Star-Herald in a interview Friday, Sept. 18.

Nebraska Democrats are few and far between. According to the Nebraska Secretary of State’s office, just 29% of the state’s registered voters are Democrats, compared to 47% registered Republicans.

If that weren’t enough, Janicek is also running without the support of his party.

After Janicek won the party’s nomination, he sent a text message to a group chat explaining he’d been in an argument with a female staffer. In the message, Janicek wondered if the campaign should spend funds toward “getting her laid,” and made crude comments about group sex.

“I made a huge mistake in sending that text message,” Janicek said. “It was a stupid mistake and I owned it immediately.”

Janicek told the Star-Herald the female staffer accepted his apology shortly after the message happen. Despite Janicek’s claim, the Nebraska Democratic Party (NDP) withdrew its support and resources from Janicek’s campaign and demanded that he withdraw from the race, citing the text message.

Have to work overnight shift tonight. I don’t mind that and it gets me Sunday off. Still, supper now. Got rice cooking and some restaurant packaged Sloppy Joe I got from the pantry heating in a sauce pan. I think it’ll go well with the rice.

Oh, and a nice hot cuppa tea since it’s still cool for the time of year and supposed to get windy tonight.

It was good.

Also, this year we got a LOT of apples!

Today in childish conservaderp:

A toilet and a sign: Statement or not, it may be illegal, Ingham County clerk contends (Lansing, Mich. State Journal)

MASON - A toilet perched on a front lawn, accompanied by a sign saying, “Place Mail In Ballots Here,” might be construed as a political statement of sorts.

However you interpret it, Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum said, it might be illegal.

“It’s solicitation of absentee ballots into a container,” Byrum said Friday evening. “Our election integrity is not a game. I expect everyone to act appropriately, and this is unacceptable.”

Byrum issued a statement with a photo of the display in Mason, saying she filed a police report about it with dispatchers on Monday.

Mason police contacted her on Wednesday and promised to call her after they’d spoken with the homeowner, she said.

Under Michigan election law, illegally taking possession of an absentee ballot is a felony punishable a maximum of 5 years in prison and a $1,000 fine, Byrum said. The statute language can be found here.

And this part:

In her statement, Byrum, a Democrat, said she found it “more than a little ironic” that the person registered at the address has voted absentee for the past three years [emphasis mine]. That type of information is publicly available, she said.

Beautiful apples!
Galas?

Probably. Shortly after we got the tree, we rented goats to get rid of the ivy. Turns out “a kid’ll eat ivy, too”, but only after they eat EVERY OTHER GREEN THING in the yard. They went for the apple tree like it was what they’d lived their whole lives waiting for. Ate all the leaves and branches and stripped the bark off the remaining stick all the way down to the ground.

The tree that grew back grew from below ground, so MAYBE it’s from above the splice where they graft the varietal onto the rootstock. Maybe not.

Anyway, the apples are pretty good. Crisp, could use a bit more sweetness, but they were ready. Almost fell off the stem.

19
ckkatz  Sep 19, 2020 • 7:10:44pm

Sorry to hear about the tree. Glad it, or at least part of it survived and is highly fruitful.

I am amused because a couple of female friends went over to a local winery Saturday morning to do “Goat Yoga”. Apparently it involves doing yoga while a herd of goats hangs around. And it does involve wine afterwards. One friend said that it was fun, until a goat bit her on her finger. I didn’t ask more.

In the conservative religious assertion of private enterprise can do everything better than government:

Wait for coronavirus test results in Nebraska varies by lab, can be up to four days (Omaha World-Herald)

The state lab and the University of Nebraska Medical Center have turnaround times of about one day.

Commercial labs have a turnaround time of about four days.

In his weekly coronavirus video, Dr. Bob Rauner, president of Partnership for a Healthy Lincoln, questioned why the state’s testing system, part of a $27 million contract, was still averaging longer times for test results.

“What boggles my mind is why are we putting millions of state dollars into TestNebraska, which still has a 3½-day turnaround?” he said.

Leah Bucco-White, a spokeswoman for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, said the TestNebraska times are trending in the right direction.

Narrator: No they’re not. DHHS has been lying about TestNebraska and their Utah libertarian dudebros with no medical experience since Gov. Ricketts first gave them a no-bid contract.

Still amazed at the massive hypocrisy unleashed by Ginsburg’s passing. I’m seeing people posting quotes/memes/videos of Ginsburg, Obama, other liberals speaking to nominating SC justice in an election year. The implied meaning is hypocrisy. Yet nothing about Garland or the Banana Republicans.

If your issue is hypocrisy, it’s isn’t the liberals.

Geez. What a time we’re living in. I just don’t know what to say anymore. My new rowing hobby/obsession is in full swing since Tuesday when I had my Concept2 Model D delivered. Thanks Amazon. I lucked out. Been on the waiting list with C2 for almost 2 months and my expected order date kept getting pushed back. Getting it sooner was worth the extra $50ish.

I rowed on the water for the college team back in the day. I was worried I would struggle with technique/form but it too is like riding a bike. That was a great feeling. I’m slow as hell at my old age (snicker) and after my cardiac episode last year. This is a much better workout vs. my recumbent bike which I’m considering selling. I could use the space.

If anyone is struggling mentally, try finding a physical outlet. I tell ya. When trying to go flat out during a 500m row, you can’t think about anything other than trying to not die. Lol

One of the cabins my parents rented up north had a kayak, and going out on the lake first thing in the morning, just myself and my paddle… It’s possibly one of the easiest ways I’ve found to commune with God. No, It’s mostly moving North; to the right of my photo. The Towercam photo looks scary, but we have a very large cistern next to the 100” dome and fire crews on site. The closest building to the flames in that shot appears to be our machine shop. The 60” and 100” domes have an asphalt apron around them, and problematic trees were removed a year or two ago. Our director has made sure the crews understand the historical significance of the observatory; it has first priority on the mountain.

Been a part-time telescope operator there for about a decade. Dream come true for this originally amateur astronomer!

It was the station fire that last came through if I recall… So glad to hear it’s okay.

So Trump says Biden will destroy God if he’s elected president. Doesn’t that sort of imply that Biden already has the power? Or is Trump saying he personally can destroy God if he so chooses?

Can’t we just go back to tan suits and Dijon mustard?

When Donald Trump invokes “God” he means “Donald Trump.”

When the lickspittle horny-for-cruelty people that follow him invoke God they mean “any authority that lets me indulge this hate boner.”

They are incapable of a God that transcends their petty-but-almost-erotic fantasies of spiteful abuse of personal power.

Subsequently, anything that cockblocks them is attacking and dethroning God.

I also remember pundits insisting that Kavanaugh’s hearings were so contentious and Dems so “mean” that it was going to hurt them in the mid-terms. Instead, the man’s confirmation vote has been an albatross hanging around the neck of every “moderate” who found an excuse to vote for him.

They need their God to be strong enough to kill others, but weak enough they can control Her.

They love when their God Trump kicks down colored people and queers. That’s what Evangelical Xtians live for. They orgasm when their enemies are hurt.

And just when you thought it couldn’t get any weirder—step right up, Mr. Jones.

ALEX JONES (HOST): She’s leaving the marching orders. And this, you know, I talked to a White House adviser as well, not just the two of the White House lawyers today, just in the last 30 minutes before we went — when you were already live, I was talking to them.

And they said, “Look, the really sick math is they had her on life support, they could keep her alive with adrenaline and growth hormone and blood transfusions, and it was her wish to go ahead and die to get the vote out as a blood sacrifice because her main mission was to get abortion, which she helped get through, and that blood sacrifice that [Sen. Chuck] Schumer [D-NY] talked about, if you want a war, quit letting us have the blood of the babies, we need that satanic energy.”

As narcissists they can’t actually conceive of a being bigger than themselves, in the sense of knowing more, being more, being better. When they try to speak about God, they simply describe themselves but with the power to do whatever they want. But since they’re also desperate for external affirmations of legitimacy and value shallow symbolism because they can’t really grasp deeper meaning, they’ll never actually acknowledge that they’ve invented a new God or a new theology.

So…as is pretty much always the case…the “attack and dethrone GOD” thing is a confession masked as an accusation.

What vivid imaginations these right wing nut jobs have. But let’s be real here.

Alex Jones would be formidable in a post-Trump GOP presidential primary. The deplorables want to hate while being entertained, and Alex Jones will be good at that.

Chris Janicek tours western Nebraska amid bid to unseat Ben Sasse

A periodic reminder: in a true wave election, an unknown with no qualifications can defeat a respected experienced well-financed incumbent. The unknown may only serve a single term, when sanity returns, but anything is possible with an outraged electorate.
