Christian conservatives and libertarian cranks are the first to bleat WE’RE NOT A DEMOCRACY WE’RE A REPUBLIC whenever someone talks about the threats to democracy.

That’s because they don’t believe in democracy. They believe the Constitution is a conservative document of, by, and for Christians and property owners. Remember the right to vote was available only to white male land owners over the age of 21 when the Constitution was ratified, and there are many conservatives who believe anyone receiving government assistance of any kind - even unemployment insurance - should be stripped of their right to vote.

We know if Joe mentioned Merrick Garland Fox and OANN would whip up the MAGATS to start with the death threats.

It wouldn’t simply be them. Let’s be honest, anybody Joe mentions would almost immediately have reporters air-dropped on their front lawn to bang on their doors, dig through their garbage, and give their animals body cavity searches for any sign of something “untoward” that could be used to question Biden’s judgment.

Yeah, I think this might be a bit much even for the “Trump or Death” “moderates” in the Senate. Kavanaugh gave them at least a bit of cover by never giving a straight answer on the abortion question. There is no real way they could face voters and say Barnett would “keep an open mind” or “would decide the cases on their merits.”

Whenever I see crap like that, I think of a 2012 article written by Christy Wampole—
“Guns and the decline of the young man.” It is a total, complete piece of shit, with “thoughts” like:

From the civil rights and feminist movements of the 1960s and onward, young
men - and young white men in particular - have increasingly been asked to yield
what they’d believed was securely theirs.

Can you imagine being in the shoes of the one who feels his power slipping away?

For those of us who belong to a demographic that is doing increasingly better, a trained empathic reflex toward those we know to be losing for our gains could lead to a more deferential attitude on our part and could constitute an invitation for them to stay
with us.

Wonkette broke down the swillfest brilliantly, and it’s stuck with me all these years later.

I do wanna suggest to Senate Dems that they spend every moment they’re not ripping the nominee a new one replaying ever single video and displaying huge print-outs of every statement from these jagoffs indicating how they were not only dedicated to stealing the seat from Obama, but they (particularly Tailgunner Ted) were willing to keep that seat empty through a Clinton administration just to deny it to her.

Power begets power begets infinite power, and too many of our arbiters of reason and objectivity tacitly buy into the idea that the GOP has an inherent monopoly on legitimacy. And that may very well kill us in the end, no matter how much we should win under ideal, fair rules.

85
A Cranky One  Sep 20, 2020 • 1:42:54pm

For Republicans, the truth is whatever they are saying now; what was said before and may be said in the future is irrelevant.

The same holds true for Trump. The lie of the moment is the “truth”. And that’s one reason he was able to absorb the republican party.

His supporters are happy to enable this behavior, thus no amount of fact checking or demonstrations of republican hypocrisy will penetrate.

Maybe JMO, but “birth control and reproductive health” seem to have very little - if anything - to do with the fanatical anti-abortion* movement: “abortion” per se seems way more of an abstract symbol - an unmitigated and inexcusable Evil to be fought against to prove one’s Virtue and Rightness in the political sphere. And the more specific and political the arguments, the more the fanatics are motivated to remove the discussion onto the plane of Absolute Right and Absolute Wrong: since their obsessive crusade gets less popular the more “victories” it earns. “Reproductive health” is a triviality: the real issue is (oppressive) social and political power wielded in the name of “God”.

*I refuse to call it “pro-life”.

88
Jack Burton  Sep 20, 2020 • 1:51:33pm

We can scream all we want. We can pull out the receipts and show them. We can play back recordings and videos of GOP Senators being hypocrites.

It doesn’t matter. They.don’t.give.a.fuck. We also know they have no morals, no spine, and no qualms about looking like hypocrites. Unless there’s an actual Senate function that the Democrats can do or control to stop it, they are going to get their Judge Pirro.

The only solutions to this are, besides simply voting Biden.

Stacking courts which can backfire.
Impeaching Judges which we probably won’t have the votes for, and if it looks too partisan will turn off a lot of the public.

Really we have two options to end this:

Start pushing to make a few things (LGBTQ rights, Women’s rights & Abortion rights, Racial equality, and Voting rights in particular) constitutional amendments. Which is a lot of work but will put a few issues to rest forever more or less if we can get them passed.

or

Start making backroom deals with GOP Senators for their votes, and make sure that it’s done in a mostly legal way too. Most realistic, much easier. Many of these clowns are likely to get booted out of office this year. Some of them are going to be investigation targets next year if Biden wins and the Derpenburg Trials begin. There are things to work with.

Pissing and moaning and saying “look they’re hypocrites!” isn’t one of them.

QAnon conspiracists believe in a vast pedophile ring. The truth is sadder

Rather than confront the reality of child abuse, Trump fans have dreamed up an elaborate fiction to justify their support for a morally indefensible president

QAnon is an elaborate fiction dreamed up by Trump fans to meet the psychological needs of those who cannot allow themselves to admit what is plain as day to everyone else: that the man they voted for and support is mendacious, narcissistic, incompetent, corrupt and horrifically unfit, both morally and intellectually, for his office. He is so ostentatiously unfit to be president that the only way even his most ardent supporters can justify his position is to elevate their own denial into a baroque theology in which his opponents are Satanic pedophiles, and he is the defender of the children.

Bill Clinton to Jake Tapper: “But you can’t keep a democracy if there is one set of rules for one group and another set for everybody else.”

This needs to be the tagline in every ad for Dems. The choice in this election is between a democracy or kleptocracy.

Except a Clinton said it, so therefore it cannot be true whatsoever and 75% of the country will run screaming the other way at top speed just for spite, because fuck yeah, contrarianism is the best belief system. ///////

EDIT: Case in point, almost all the responses to the CNN tweet on that interview boil down to “FUCK YOU, VOTE TRUMP BECAUSE HE’S NOT YOU AND FUCK THE LIBS TOO JUST BECAUSE OF YOU!!” It doesn’t fucking matter because Dems are the great grand font of all things bad in this country and the more you try and point out that the GOP is doing shit, the more that all sides round on you to scream ‘No, you’re to blame!!’ and shit on you endlessly forever.

EDIT: Bleh…meant this as an edit to the last post, not a reply. God, I need to step away from this shit for a while.

QAnon conspiracists believe in a vast pedophile ring. The truth is sadder

There’s also the fact they invented a fake pedophile ring, while basically ignoring 2 real sex trafficking rings: Epstein and ICE/CBP. Their Derp Messiah who is going to stop all this (and four years with no opposition has done nothing of the sort obviously) is involved in one, and technically runs the other.

And they inject it with bullshit ripped off directly from the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

Man accused of killings arrested in NM posing as brother

State court records allege that Dakota “Outlaw” Briscoe was driving his brother’s 2004 van and using his brother’s driver’s license when he drove to a border patrol inspection checkpoint on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old’s scheme might have worked had his brother, Austin Epps, not had a warrant for his own arrest. Epps had a warrant for failing to appear in court in 2019 on a drug charge. Additionally, Briscoe’s 28-year-old brother had a suspended driver’s license and the van’s registration had expired, according to court records.

That’s it apparently.

First line from the Wikipedia entry:

Albuquerque (/ˈælbəkɜːrki/ (About this soundlisten) AL-bə-kur-kee; Spanish pronunciation: [alβu(ɾ)ˈkeɾke] (About this soundlisten); Navajo: Beeʼeldííl Dahsinil [pèːʔèltíːl tɑ̀xsɪ̀nɪ̀l]; Eastern Keres: Arawageeki; Jemez: Vakêêke; Zuni: Alo:ke:k’ya; Jicarilla Apache: Gołgéeki’yé), abbreviated as ABQ, is the most populous city in the U.S. state of New Mexico.[5] The city’s nicknames are The Duke City and Burque, both of which reference its 1706 founding by Nuevo México governor Francisco Cuervo y Valdés as La Villa de Alburquerque.

It is a gang tattoo for a prison gang in New Mexico, the Burqueños. The year the city of Albquerque was founded.

Watching the Kelly Loeffler/Doug Collins vs Raphael Warnock(Democrat, and head of Ebenezer Baptist Church) commercials and I’m noticing something. Loeffler and Collins are attacking each other or making vague general promises. Loeffler keeps talking about the stifling of conservatives freedom of speech, Collins talks about how all the right conservatives like him, including Trump. Neither of them have said a word about Warnock. His commercials focus on equality and growing up in Georgia and wanting more fairness for everyone.

It’s not a secret that only the younger Cuban Americans who were born here vote Democratic in any appreciable number. The older ones, generally buy into the rhetoric of Democrats = leftists = communists. Some Democrats praising Castro for various things over the years has in no way helped that perception.

I’m honestly curious to see if Trump was so bad that older Cuban Americans are holding their noses and voting for Biden or not, or if the younger generations are outweighing the older group.

Well, in all the crazy news, this just slid by. I would say “shot…and chaser” but that would be tasteless here.

From Friday:

Warrant to be issued for Jake Gardner, Omaha bar owner charged in death of James Scurlock

A grand jury on Tuesday charged Jake Gardner, 38, with four felonies: manslaughter, attempted first-degree assault, making terroristic threats and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

Gardner shot James Scurlock during a struggle outside Gardner’s bars near 12th and Harney Streets. He says he acted in self-defense. If convicted, he could face up to 95 years in prison.

*snip*

On June 1, Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine announced at a press conference that he wouldn’t be charging Gardner because interviews with witnesses and video of the scuffle between Gardner and Scurlock supported the self-defense claim. But Franklin [special prosecutor brought in after an uproar] came to a different conclusion. Omaha police and Franklin’s investigators, both of whom are retired Omaha police detectives, continued to investigate the case. The investigators interviewed 60 witnesses.

omaha.com

There’s more at the link about how one legislator said Jake Gardner was getting special treatment in turning himself in.

Which brings us to today:

Jake Gardner has killed himself in Oregon, authorities say

In a stunning development, Jake Gardner — the white bar owner indicted in the killing of a 22-year-old Black man during protests in downtown Omaha on May 30 — has been found dead near Portland, Oregon.

Gardner shot himself after authorities in Hillsboro, Oregon, received a call of a suicidal party, said two law enforcement sources who spoke on condition of anonymity. The death happened this weekend, though Hillsboro police would not confirm the death or the time it happened.

More at the link: omaha.com

If he’d been arrested after the warrant was issued, would he be alive now?

Probably all of the killing people without suffering consequences.

Like, “let people die because they cost too much to insurance companies” is a pretty natural follow up to “let Guatamalans die because Dole need cheap banana land” and “let people die because butt sex that isn’t MY butt sex” and “let people die because it’s emotionally fulfilling to turn an Afghan wedding into Melton Mobray pie filling and maybe kill one terrorist by a broad definition of terrorism and this is completely different and better than the bombing we did in Vietnam.” It’s all kind of suggestive that there’s a pretty easy path to getting away with social murder.

Just tell you in group that everyone that died was the out group. Especially if the people who died were of the in group.

Been seeing a lot of “you can’t shame a Republican because they have none, so why bother?” I think we should keep doing it — blanket the airwaves and the internet with ads showing the bare-faced flip-flops. No, they won’t be ashamed, but they’re not the target — we’re aiming at the sporadic voters. The message is “Do you trust anything this person says?” We can keep saying this isn’t normal; this isn’t acceptable; this is disgusting.

I wonder if we can also teach a lot of non-political people what IOKIYAR means, and ask them if they think that is an effective way to run a country? Some of them will say yes; others will bothsides at the top of their lungs. But make them aware of the double standard so they might keep noticing it. Not sure how to do it in a way that doesn’t get the automatic response of dismissing the uncomfortable new information.

Jimmy Kimmel had a great opening monologue about it. He says he’d been asked why they were doing it, and was it necessary to have one now. And he responded that none of them were ever necessary. But they are meant to be fun, and meant to be a diversion. And people needed both right now.

My wife is watching them, and a whole lot of other people are as well. And they are doing it at home. I suspect there are too many football watchers not at home.

And we all have our diversions. Mine is making way too many comments here.

I’m happy Leah Remini got an Emmy for the third season of “Scientology and the Aftermath.” She found out she won at a livestream of the “lesser awards.” I’m pleased because I’m sure it had the leader of Scientology, David Miscavige, completely losing his shit.

Otherwise, I could care less.

Thank you. I’m not watching because I give a fuck—it’s just a diversion and satisfying curiosity about how they would pull it off. (Plus, because of being home 24/7, I’ve seen more of the nominated shows than I ever have before.)

I am honestly surprised they have a live crowd there.

EDIT: Nevermind. That’s what I get for only watching the first few minutes.

They don’t have an actual crowd, unless it’s changed in the last half an hour. They used video from previous Emmy’s at the beginning, and then Jimmy found himself in the audience.

On @CNN, Bob Woodward drops new audiotape in which Trump gives himself an A grade for his handling of the pandemic. At time (July), 142,000 had died. Woodward calls it “saddest” taped statement by a president, including Nixon.

If in the movie Jaws the mayor kept the beaches open and let the shark keep eating people, and then gave himself an A grade for handling it, the movie would have been panned for being so ridiculous.

I’m not against breaking tradition. Any move like this must be a well thought out comprehensive change in several aspects of the structure of the US Government. Not some rushed thorough bullshit that can be easily undone with the next administration or turned against us.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with tradition. However, when tradition becomes an excuse to bring societal progress to a halt, then tradition needs to be reconsidered.

At some point, unthinking adherence to tradition devolves into little more than the dead imposing their will upon the living.

re: #276 Dread Pirate Ron

Moscow Mitch didn’t acquire his moniker by standing up to the Russians. The entire Republican party in Washington is compromised; they are all either being blackmailed or else they are witting participants in the efforts to undermine our nation. McConnell has always been a white supremacist (yes — his wife is Asian — but it’s black and brown people he detests) and so he may be a totally willing partner with the white supremacists and oligarchs running Russia today. And let’s not forget McConnell’s refusal to stand with Obama in a bipartisan effort in 2016 on Russian election interference.

How explain Ron Johnson’s efforts to promote Russian disinformation from Ukrainians working for Russia? And the visit of 7 Republican Senators and a Republican congresswoman to Moscow for July 4th, 2018? The Republican party is compromised, yet the Trump cult doesn’t care about their affiliation with Russia. My Trumpster brother continues to rant about China being the threat and is not concerned at all about Russia. Trump supporters describe this all as the Russia hoax.

It’s appalling that there seems to be no one in the party who is willing to blow the whistle. There are some, like Joe Walsh, who has been vehement from December 2016 on Trump’s public displays of admiration and support of Putin, but there appears to be no one who has private information that they are willing to release to provide evidence of the secret hold Putin has on the GOP. Power over loyalty to our nation — even if the power comes with the support of a foreign adversary.

Well, in all the crazy news, this just slid by. I would say “shot…and chaser” but that would be tasteless here.

From Friday:

omaha.com

There’s more at the link about how one legislator said Jake Gardner was getting special treatment in turning himself in.

Which brings us to today:

More at the link: omaha.com

If he’d been arrested after the warrant was issued, would he be alive now?

What the hell was Gardner doing in Oregon, and had the Douglas County DA done a proper investigation rather than saying “self-defence” followed by massive protests in Omaha over the shooting, this asshat would have been in jail.
