I have many mental health diagnoses, worn like medals earned in a war against myself.
When depression grips, I hide in worlds sheltered from human emotion. One time I was hunkered down watching a documentary about fish. This was new footage, of undiscovered creatures who live in the very deepest parts of the very deepest oceans. Down there it’s cold, bleak, there’s no light, and almost no life. The fish that roam this wasteland alone are hideous beasts with terrifying fangs and luminescent lures.

Thinking about these tragic monsters left me pretty upset. For days. Until eventually I realised, they must come from somewhere. There must be a daddy hideous sea monster, and a mummy hideous sea monster, and, despite the odds, they must meet, and fall in love, and make little baby hideous sea monsters.

And is that so very different from us? So I wrote this love song.

I would prefer not to have the Holy War that would erupt here in the USA between the various religious sects if they were to get their hands on that kind of power. I mean, the fanatical Catholics think everyone else is wrong, the Evangelicals generally think Catholics and Mormons are going to hell, and Mormons, well, they send missionaries EVERYWHERE. Do you think these (or any other religious combination) would be willing to share power? Hell no. It would be the Thirty Years War but here in the USA.

For all those who think the public will be outraged by McConnell’s hypocrisy: everyone knew that he was lying in 2016 and that the only principle he followed to obstruct everything that the Democratic President did. For those bashing New Jersey and New York over the early outbreak of Covid-19 rampaging through convalescent homes:

Nearly half of Nebraska’s COVID-19 deaths come from nursing homes; tracking the deadliest outbreaks (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Gov. Pete Ricketts and state health officials for months have rejected calls to release the names of Nebraska nursing homes with COVID-19 outbreaks, offering only statewide aggregate numbers of cases and deaths in long-term care facilities.

But the World-Herald recently mined a federal database to reveal COVID-19’s toll on Nebraska’s 200-plus nursing homes and their 11,500 residents.

In all, through Sept. 6, 31 homes have reported fatal outbreaks, totaling 185 deaths. That’s approaching half the state’s total death count of 400-plus, underscoring the critical need to protect nursing home residents.

Nine homes had 10 or more deaths, including five in Douglas County. In Grand Island, one home saw 20 resident deaths.

And up until now, the vast majority of the deadly outbreaks have never been publicly disclosed.

Gov. Ricketts has been one of the Republicans bashing Gov. Cuomo over nursing home deaths. Now we know why he’s been so resistant about releasing those numbers. The percentage here is even higher.

That’s the sort of argument someone like me cannot make.

I’m aware of what’s in the Bible, what it says about abortion (nada except for an adultery test in the Old Testament), what it says in the New Testament (also nada), but no one is going to listen to an atheist calling a Christian so-called pro-lifer a hypocrite, or working contrary to their goals of no abortions.

It takes other Christians to do that.

If I had my way religion wouldn’t worm its way into politics at all, but that’s not the country I live in. Since it’s there, it will take those who are Christians to make those arguments (since atheists are less trusted than rapists or paedophiles in our country).

The overwhelming majority of Christians believe in Hell. Liberal denomination does not matter.

Not quite the same. I didn’t meant to imply predestination, more that saying “But I was saved and he wasn’t” didnt actually mean much to God.” More that following Jesus was great, but if you did the right things, that was way more important.”

The preacher who made those statements at the church I went to as a kid was eventually driven out by the older congregants.

When we first moved here, we went around the neighbourhood introducing ourselves (Oklahoma plate on the car, making sure people knew we lived here now).

The woman across the street from us invited us to the Lutheran church within a couple minutes of meeting her (she no longer lives here), and was stunned when we told her we were atheists, but thank you. She lost it: You can’t say that! God will send you to Hell! You need to repent immediately! (Made our way out pretty quickly.)

Threats of Hell are a very good way to keep the faithful in line, but carry no weight amongst non-believers. (Christians don’t seem to understand why that threat carries no weight. They believe it so it must be true.)

That’s OK under the Centrist RC Thomistic doctrine. Love is the goal, faith is the threshold, obedience is the requirement. “Outside the Church there is no salvation” is the default. But there always was a very narrow acceptance of exceptional grace, held to save non-believers who led near-perfect lives. That’s why there are old churches named for Saint Moses.

There’s about a billion and a half RC-compliant Catholics. Thus there is quite a broad range of beliefs that can be squeezed into orthodoxy.

My understanding of the ACA case as a non-lawyer:

The big tax cut of 2017 cut the penalty for the individual mandate to $0. Therefore, the wingnut circuit judge decided that it was not a tax anymore per the 2012 SCOTUS decision and therefore the individual mandate was unconstitutional and therefore the whole of the ACA is unconstitutional because why not. The wingnut appeals court said that the individual mandate is unconstitutional but punted on the unconstitutionality of the whole ACA.

Therefore, if we get the House, Senate and Presidency in November, this case can be mooted in January by passing a non-zero individual mandate penalty and therefore it’s a tax again. I don’t think the President could do it by executive order, but considering the mess the goopers made of the tax cut legislation, I guess we’d need an expert opinion.

My opinion is expand the Federal courts and SCOTUS anyways. You don’t have to make a political argument: there are too few courts to handle the case load now, and each SCOTUS justice is handling multiple circuits. The whole gooper power grab is based on very carefully gaming a tightly controlled system, and once you throw that up in the air a lot of this crap falls apart.

This could be interesting. I haven’t gone very deep into it yet, but the scale of money laundering is about what I expected (multiple trillions of $), and Treasury looks like they’ve been sitting on a mountain of suspicious activity reports that serve as bank get-out-of-jail-free cards.

I think this explains a lot of government bad behavior: follow the money. Also, a new Democratic AG who is not weirdly uninterested in money laundering involving conservative organizations may make things very unpleasant for a lot of gooper Senators.

Woman suspected of sending poisoned letter to Trump arrested (KTVZ, Bend, Ore.)

A woman suspected of sending a letter containing the poison ricin to President Donald Trump was arrested as she tried to enter the US from Canada at a border crossing in New York state, a US law enforcement official said.

The woman was carrying a gun and arrested by US authorities, according to the law enforcement official.

US prosecutors in Washington, DC, are expected to bring charges against her.

CNN previously reported that law enforcement had intercepted a ricin package sent to Trump last week, according to two law enforcement officials, and that investigators were looking into the possibility that it came from Canada.

A person familiar with the investigation told CNN’s Josh Campbell the letter was mailed from St. Hubert, Quebec, and contained a granular substance with similar physical characteristics to ground castor beans.

Gov. Ricketts has been one of the Republicans bashing Gov. Cuomo over nursing home deaths. Now we know why he’s been so resistant about releasing those numbers. The percentage here is even higher.

The percentages are even higher despite having months of lead time to prepare and do better.

Cuomo and Murphy were dealing with a crisis with no information, Trump angling to block aid and support, and everyone was on a crash course trying to figure out steps to take to keep people safe.

Ricketts should have benefited from the weeks and months of lessons learned in NY and NJ, but instead, he squandered it, just as surely as other GOP run states did. They ignored the primary lesson of masking and social distancing, and that reopening too fast and too soon has deadly consequences.

But sure, it’s all blue states fault that our death toll is so high.

Right now, on per capita basis, NY ranks 12th, NJ is 15th (worldometers). There’s a metric shit ton of GOP run states who have higher per capita cases than blue states: LA, FL, MS, AL, AZ, GA, TN, SC, IA, AR, and TX all come in higher than NY.

On per capita deaths basis, NY and NJ are still well ahead of the rest of the nation, but not for lack of trying. The death rates in GOP states are rising, despite what we’ve learned about spreading covid19 and what it’d take to stop the spread.

Covid19 causes myocarditis. That’s an infection of the heart muscle, and it can kill if you don’t catch it in time. It’s dangerous stuff. We’ve seen a bunch of pro and college athletes diagnosed with it.

That it’d cause heart attacks in otherwise healthy people isn’t surprising me in the slightest. I heard what it did to a family friend - it killed him. He was otherwise healthy and both he and his wife got covid. She recovered, he never did.

CDC is currently updating its recommendations regarding airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). The “election to choose the electors” is their general election. The state courts would have to invalidate the whole thing — not declare a winner — for that clause to operate.

Bell on sterilization, 1944 Korematsu v. U.S. on Japanese internment. This court has been heading in the wrong direction every since Scalia joined. There were some good decisions — but they have been overwhelmed by many terrible ones under Roberts.

So, basically, the states have until December 8 to determine who their electors are.

In a US population of 330 million, that means 165 million cases (at 50%). If there’s a 1% case death rate, you’re looking at… 1.65 million deaths.

Only problem. US case fatality rate is 2.9%, which means you’re looking at 4.79 million deaths.

I still think Espy is a long shot, but he’s an inexpensive long shot. Buying media in Jackson, Biloxi and Tupelo isn’t very expensive, and there’s been so little polling that we really don’t know WHAT that race looks like.

In some ways, I feel like a dollar there is a better investment than in, say, Texas, which is probably THE most expensive state for media buys per capita, since it has four big markets plus close to a dozen smaller ones and you need to buy them all to make a dent.

Espy is running to unseat Cindy Hyde-Smith, who is not exactly beloved in these parts. While Mississippi does reliably vote GOP most of the time, that’s not always the case. We did have a Democratic governor in the not too distant past.

Also, this state has a large black population that fucking hates Trump and Espy is African American. This state has never elected a black person to U.S. senate.
