I have many mental health diagnoses, worn like medals earned in a war against myself.
When depression grips, I hide in worlds sheltered from human emotion. One time I was hunkered down watching a documentary about fish. This was new footage, of undiscovered creatures who live in the very deepest parts of the very deepest oceans. Down there it’s cold, bleak, there’s no light, and almost no life. The fish that roam this wasteland alone are hideous beasts with terrifying fangs and luminescent lures.

Thinking about these tragic monsters left me pretty upset. For days. Until eventually I realised, they must come from somewhere. There must be a daddy hideous sea monster, and a mummy hideous sea monster, and, despite the odds, they must meet, and fall in love, and make little baby hideous sea monsters.

And is that so very different from us? So I wrote this love song.

CBS this morning was talking about her. Some of you already know this, but part of what her got onto women’s rights was her own experience with her brother. The family wanted her to get a job so that her brother could go to school. She was going to have to help pay for his school.

I would prefer not to have the Holy War that would erupt here in the USA between the various religious sects if they were to get their hands on that kind of power. I mean, the fanatical Catholics think everyone else is wrong, the Evangelicals generally think Catholics and Mormons are going to hell, and Mormons, well, they send missionaries EVERYWHERE. Do you think these (or any other religious combination) would be willing to share power? Hell no. It would be the Thirty Years War but here in the USA.

For all those who think the public will be outraged by McConnell’s hypocrisy: everyone knew that he was lying in 2016 and that the only principle he followed to obstruct everything that the Democratic President did. Everyone knew th at if it had been a Republican president he never would have stopped the appointment. He has poisoned this nation from the day Obama took office and with Trump in office, he had a perfect partner. McConnell, Barr, and Trump are the ideal trio to bring this nation to its knees and discard all progress of the last 100 years. It’s difficult to see what the Democrats can do to stop his plot — My only solace is that if he really believed Trump was going to win re-election and the GOP was going to hold the Senate, he may have decided to wait until after the election to make this move, so this may reflect his concern that both the White House and the Senate will be lost. Let’s pray this comes to pass and they go down to defeat.

Let’s pray this comes to pass and they go down to defeat.

I think that’s why McConnell is in such a rush to do this - it’s a tacit unspoken admission on his part that he reckons that Trump is likely to lose his re-election bid and that the GOP will likely lose control of the Senate as well.

And with that, off to work….back later.

For those bashing New Jersey and New York over the early outbreak of Covid-19 rampaging through convalescent homes:

Nearly half of Nebraska’s COVID-19 deaths come from nursing homes; tracking the deadliest outbreaks (Scottsbluff, Nebr. Star-Herald)

Gov. Pete Ricketts and state health officials for months have rejected calls to release the names of Nebraska nursing homes with COVID-19 outbreaks, offering only statewide aggregate numbers of cases and deaths in long-term care facilities.

But the World-Herald recently mined a federal database to reveal COVID-19’s toll on Nebraska’s 200-plus nursing homes and their 11,500 residents.

In all, through Sept. 6, 31 homes have reported fatal outbreaks, totaling 185 deaths. That’s approaching half the state’s total death count of 400-plus, underscoring the critical need to protect nursing home residents.

Nine homes had 10 or more deaths, including five in Douglas County. In Grand Island, one home saw 20 resident deaths.

And up until now, the vast majority of the deadly outbreaks have never been publicly disclosed.

Gov. Ricketts has been one of the Republicans bashing Gov. Cuomo over nursing home deaths. Now we know why he’s been so resistant about releasing those numbers. The percentage here is even higher.

That’s the sort of argument someone like me cannot make.

I’m aware of what’s in the Bible, what it says about abortion (nada except for an adultery test in the Old Testament), what it says in the New Testament (also nada), but no one is going to listen to an atheist calling a Christian so-called pro-lifer a hypocrite, or working contrary to their goals of no abortions.

It takes other Christians to do that.

If I had my way religion wouldn’t worm its way into politics at all, but that’s not the country I live in. Since it’s there, it will take those who are Christians to make those arguments (since atheists are less trusted than rapists or paedophiles in our country).

Christians who do not believe in Hell from the Pew Religious Landscape Survey, by age, generation cohort, gender (women far more than men), race (about 70% of whites), immigration cohort, income distribution, education level, parental status, by frequency of attendance at (any) church, by frequency of prayer, &c.

The overwhelming majority of Christians believe in Hell. Liberal denomination does not matter.

That is one counter-apologtics argument against Pascal’s Wager. Any God sufficiently knowledgeable about his or her creation would also be aware if he or she was being hoodwinked to avoid Perdition.

Not quite the same. I didn’t meant to imply predestination, more that saying “But I was saved and he wasn’t” didnt actually mean much to God.” More that following Jesus was great, but if you did the right things, that was way more important.”

The preacher who made those statements at the church I went to as a kid was eventually driven out by the older congregants.

Pretty much.

When we first moved here, we went around the neighbourhood introducing ourselves (Oklahoma plate on the car, making sure people knew we lived here now).

The woman across the street from us invited us to the Lutheran church within a couple minutes of meeting her (she no longer lives here), and was stunned when we told her we were atheists, but thank you. She lost it: You can’t say that! God will send you to Hell! You need to repent immediately! (Made our way out pretty quickly.)

Threats of Hell are a very good way to keep the faithful in line, but carry no weight amongst non-believers. (Christians don’t seem to understand why that threat carries no weight. They believe it so it must be true.)

Live your life in a moral way as possible, but don’t believe, and into the Pit you go.

Live like an amoral ——— all your life but a deathbed conversion, welcome aboard.

But it’s all free will, you choose your fate they say. The person murdered in the streets simply chose their fate. They go to hell (because non-believer), but murderer repents and gets the golden streets. (That is just as odious as predestination.)

That’s OK under the Centrist RC Thomistic doctrine. Love is the goal, faith is the threshold, obedience is the requirement. “Outside the Church there is no salvation” is the default. But there always was a very narrow acceptance of exceptional grace, held to save non-believers who led near-perfect lives. That’s why there are old churches named for Saint Moses.

There’s about a billion and a half RC-compliant Catholics. Thus there is quite a broad range of beliefs that can be squeezed into orthodoxy.

My understanding of the ACA case as a non-lawyer:

The big tax cut of 2017 cut the penalty for the individual mandate to $0. Therefore, the wingnut circuit judge decided that it was not a tax anymore per the 2012 SCOTUS decision and therefore the individual mandate was unconstitutional and therefore the whole of the ACA is unconstitutional because why not. The wingnut appeals court said that the individual mandate is unconstitutional but punted on the unconstitutionality of the whole ACA.

Therefore, if we get the House, Senate and Presidency in November, this case can be mooted in January by passing a non-zero individual mandate penalty and therefore it’s a tax again. I don’t think the President could do it by executive order, but considering the mess the goopers made of the tax cut legislation, I guess we’d need an expert opinion.

My opinion is expand the Federal courts and SCOTUS anyways. You don’t have to make a political argument: there are too few courts to handle the case load now, and each SCOTUS justice is handling multiple circuits. The whole gooper power grab is based on very carefully gaming a tightly controlled system, and once you throw that up in the air a lot of this crap falls apart.

This could be interesting. I haven’t gone very deep into it yet, but the scale of money laundering is about what I expected (multiple trillions of $), and Treasury looks like they’ve been sitting on a mountain of suspicious activity reports that serve as bank get-out-of-jail-free cards.

I think this explains a lot of government bad behavior: follow the money. Also, a new Democratic AG who is not weirdly uninterested in money laundering involving conservative organizations may make things very unpleasant for a lot of gooper Senators.

Woman suspected of sending poisoned letter to Trump arrested (KTVZ, Bend, Ore.)

A woman suspected of sending a letter containing the poison ricin to President Donald Trump was arrested as she tried to enter the US from Canada at a border crossing in New York state, a US law enforcement official said.

The woman was carrying a gun and arrested by US authorities, according to the law enforcement official.

US prosecutors in Washington, DC, are expected to bring charges against her.

CNN previously reported that law enforcement had intercepted a ricin package sent to Trump last week, according to two law enforcement officials, and that investigators were looking into the possibility that it came from Canada.

A person familiar with the investigation told CNN’s Josh Campbell the letter was mailed from St. Hubert, Quebec, and contained a granular substance with similar physical characteristics to ground castor beans.

Authorities are investigating additional similar packages mailed to addresses in Texas that may be connected to the same sender in Canada, CNN previously reported, according to a US law enforcement official.

“We are aware of the concerning reports of packages containing ricin directed toward US federal government sites,” Mary-Liz Power, chief spokeswoman for Canada’s Minister of Public Safety Bill Blair, told CNN on Saturday.

“Canadian law enforcement is working closely with their US counterparts. As this is an active investigation we cannot comment further,” she had said.

not really. evangelicals do this all the time, to everybody. when i die as a practicing episcopalian, somebody on my Facebook page from the evangelical community will be silently praying that i was saved at the end. had someone i rather liked in high school reconnect with me on facebook last week. their first question to me on messenger was if i’d been saved. yes, i told him. lifelong episcopalian. things went downhill from there, so i ended our facebook renewal.

So, they are equal opportunity bigots then. They’d be really upset if atheists unbaptised them.

More on Jake Gardner, the Omaha man who was indicted for the murder of James Scurlock and who killed himself in Oregon:

Sunday, Dornan and Monaghan blamed Gardner’s apparent suicide on a cocktail of behavioral health problems stemming from head trauma he experienced during military service; the belief that people were out to kill him; and an “incessant rush to judgment” by social media jockeys.

In their first public comments since the May 30 shooting, the Omaha attorneys, both former prosecutors, revealed that their client had suffered two traumatic brain injuries while serving two tours in Iraq, injuries that netted him Social Security disability payments. They said the bar owner, who had posted on Facebook the weekend of May 30 that he was going downtown to “pull a military-style firewatch,” felt like he was in a warlike environment during the chaos that engulfed downtown Omaha that night.

I would have let her go:

An Oklahoma woman told police that she had to “poop so bad” before taking off and leading them on a high-speed chase, new body camera footage shows.

Emily Sindt Owings, 28, was pulled over around 9 a.m. Tuesday when a cop noticed that she was not wearing a seatbelt in the city of Enid, according to local police.

She didn’t have her insurance or any identification except for a medical marijuana card, but the officer ran her information and determined that her driver’s license had been revoked

When he informs her that he’s checking for outstanding warrants, she tearfully tells the officer, “But I have to poop so bad,” body camera footage shows.

“It’s my birthday. It’s my f-king birthday,” Owings could be heard saying.

“Why won’t you just let me go?” Owings asked him, to which the cop responds, “Because your license is suspended!”

Oh, wait:

Police said they discovered a pipe with meth when they searched her vehicle.

Gov. Ricketts has been one of the Republicans bashing Gov. Cuomo over nursing home deaths. Now we know why he’s been so resistant about releasing those numbers. The percentage here is even higher.

The percentages are even higher despite having months of lead time to prepare and do better.

Cuomo and Murphy were dealing with a crisis with no information, Trump angling to block aid and support, and everyone was on a crash course trying to figure out steps to take to keep people safe.

Ricketts should have benefited from the weeks and months of lessons learned in NY and NJ, but instead, he squandered it, just as surely as other GOP run states did. They ignored the primary lesson of masking and social distancing, and that reopening too fast and too soon has deadly consequences.

But sure, it’s all blue states fault that our death toll is so high.

Right now, on per capita basis, NY ranks 12th, NJ is 15th (worldometers). There’s a metric shit ton of GOP run states who have higher per capita cases than blue states: LA, FL, MS, AL, AZ, GA, TN, SC, IA, AR, and TX all come in higher than NY.

On per capita deaths basis, NY and NJ are still well ahead of the rest of the nation, but not for lack of trying. The death rates in GOP states are rising, despite what we’ve learned about spreading covid19 and what it’d take to stop the spread.

That sounds like Calvinism/predestination. To be as charitable as possible, that doctrine is supremely fucked up, even for religion.

This is how fucked up it can get. Last year I had a guy outside Apologia Church here in Mesa tell me, in response to my comment that half of all fertilized human ova fail to implant, that God had decided before the foundation of the world which of those fertilized ova would be saved, and which would go to hell. I was completely gobsmacked. You can’t reason with someone like that.

[I do have to admit trying to understand what purpose it would serve to perpetually separate a perhaps 32 cell blastocyst forever from God, or even roast that blastocyst in hell, because blastocysts don’t have any neural wiring whatsoever and it’d be like roasting a fingernail clipping. But then again, I think the idea of the god of the Calvinists is a horrifying monster and my only response to such a god would be a two finger salute and a Bronx cheer.]

Covid19 causes myocarditis. That’s an infection of the heart muscle, and it can kill if you don’t catch it in time. It’s dangerous stuff. We’ve seen a bunch of pro and college athletes diagnosed with it.

That it’d cause heart attacks in otherwise healthy people isn’t surprising me in the slightest. I heard what it did to a family friend - it killed him. He was otherwise healthy and both he and his wife got covid. She recovered, he never did.

Herd immunity would require at least 50% catching this, if not 70%.

In a US population of 330 million, that means 165 million cases (at 50%). If there’s a 1% case death rate, you’re looking at… 1.65 million deaths.

Only problem. US case fatality rate is 2.9%, which means you’re looking at 4.79 million deaths.

“…Kennedy believes that the Administration relied on volunteers in order to sidestep government experts and thereby “control the narrative.” He said that Brad Smith, one of the political appointees who directed the task force, pressured him to create a model fudging the projected number of fatalities; Smith wanted the model to predict a high of a hundred thousand U.S. deaths, claiming that the experts’ models were “too severe.” Kennedy said that he told Smith, “I don’t know the first thing about disease modelling,” and declined the assignment. (A spokesman said that Smith did not recall the conversation.) To date, nearly two hundred thousand Americans have died.

The volunteers were also instructed to prioritize requests from the President’s friends and supporters. According to Kennedy, the group paid special attention to Jeanine Pirro, the Fox News personality. Pirro, Kennedy said, was “particularly aggressive,” and demanded that masks be shipped to a hospital she favored. The volunteers were also told to direct millions of dollars’ worth of supplies to only five preselected distributors. Kennedy was asked to draft a justification for this decision, but refused. “Hundreds of people were sending e-mails every day offering P.P.E.,” he said, but no one in charge responded effectively. “We were super frustrated we couldn’t get the government to do more.”

(via NPR) Young Americans favor Joe Biden over President Trump, according to a new survey, but Trump’s supporters appear more enthusiastic about that choice.

Sixty percent of likely voters under the age of 30 say they will vote for Biden, compared with 27% for Trump, according to a poll from the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics out Monday. But 56% of likely voters who support the president are “very enthusiastic” about voting for him, compared with 35% of likely voters who back the Democratic nominee when asked about their enthusiasm.

The survey didn’t ask if likely voters are enthusiastic about voting against a particular candidate.

As the coronavirus pandemic has upended all aspects of life, including the ways in which people participate in elections, the poll also found significant interest in voting among young Americans. Generation Z and millennial voters account for more than one-third of eligible voters this year.

Sixty-three percent of respondents said they will “definitely” be voting in November’s election. At the same time four years ago, slightly less than half (47%) of young Americans polled said they would definitely vote.

Gee, I can’t imagine why Biden voters wouldn’t be that enthusiastic except for that whole “Trump destroying the country in the middle of a Pandemic” thing…

My opinion is that’s when Trump will be at his most dangerous. He would have absolutely nothing to lose at that point.

Might be almost worth it to offer him full immunity to federal and state charges if he and Pence resigned immediately and let Pelosi serve as a caretaker President until January 20 so that we have a functioning government addressing the pandemic.

Trump’s entire worldview is skewed by whatever he thinks benefits him personally. He constantly lies and obfuscates and ignores facts and reality, all to benefit him personally.

This isn’t just a definition issue. It’s a sociopathy issue. Trump is a sociopath whose actions have killed over 200,000 Americans and counting. He takes zero responsibility all while claiming he’s done a great job handling the pandemic.

Nothing about his response has been great. He’s failed at every step, and he purposefully lied to misinform and undermine the response by states when they needed guidance and help the most.

Whenever any State has held an election for the purpose of choosing electors, and has failed to make a choice on the day prescribed by law, the electors may be appointed on a subsequent day in such a manner as the legislature of such State may direct.

Someone posted here earlier this morning the unexpected clear guidance published this morning on cdc.gov about airborne transmission of COVID-19, and how finally now institutions can plan accordingly. I opened the link in a new tab, thankfully, and was able to screenshot the whole thing. I refreshed the page and yep, the new information is gone and this updated header has been added:

A draft version of proposed changes to these recommendations was posted in error to the agency’s official website. CDC is currently updating its recommendations regarding airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19). Once this process has been completed, the update language will be posted.

it’s this kind of thinking that demonstrates (proves?) that the court was delegitimized long ago.

everyone sees the court as a way to ‘get what we want’.

no one sees it as party in the constitutional tug of checks and balances, or a means of justice.

[Embedded content]

We’ve been spoiled by some of the great decisions of the last 70 years. The court has always been political and has frequently supported evil: the Dred Scott decision, Plessy v Ferguson, 1927 Buck v. Bell on sterilization, 1944 Korematsu v. U.S. on Japanese internment. This court has been heading in the wrong direction every since Scalia joined. There were some good decisions — but they have been overwhelmed by many terrible ones under Roberts.

Of course, Section 5 gives the states more time to make the final determination.

If any State shall have provided, by laws enacted prior to the day fixed for the appointment of the electors, for its final determination of any controversy or contest concerning the appointment of all or any of the electors of such State, by judicial or other methods or procedures, and such determination shall have been made at least six days before the time fixed for the meeting of the electors, such determination made pursuant to such law so existing on said day, and made at least six days prior to said time of meeting of the electors, shall be conclusive, and shall govern in the counting of the electoral votes as provided in the Constitution, and as hereinafter regulated, so far as the ascertainment of the electors appointed by such State is concerned.

So, basically, the states have until December 8 to determine who their electors are.

re: #97 lawhawk

Herd immunity would require at least 50% catching this, if not 70%.

In a US population of 330 million, that means 165 million cases (at 50%). If there’s a 1% case death rate, you’re looking at… 1.65 million deaths.

Only problem. US case fatality rate is 2.9%, which means you’re looking at 4.79 million deaths.

F to the T, the GOP, and mendacious media that enables both.

We do not know the true CFR because most mild or asymptomatic cases have never been officially diagnosed. Although this was more true at the beginning when testing was very limited, even now such people aren’t getting tests. There is a strong likelihood that the CFR is 1% or even as low as .5%.

at 70% and 1% death rates, you’re still looking at about 2.5 million people. And that doesn’t consider the downstream effects. How many people end up with new pre-existing conditions related to the virus? How many people who need treatment for other ailments can’t get them because hospitals are overrun? How many people end up unemployed/homeless because the epidemic kills the economy, and as a result end up in a bad state of health?

Agree with your last bit, but (regretfully) I don’t think MS is really much of a play. Doesn’t hurt to make the GOP struggle for every state in any case: though I’d think IA, MT, and NC are way better chances for a pickup.

I still think Espy is a long shot, but he’s an inexpensive long shot. Buying media in Jackson, Biloxi and Tupelo isn’t very expensive, and there’s been so little polling that we really don’t know WHAT that race looks like.

In some ways, I feel like a dollar there is a better investment than in, say, Texas, which is probably THE most expensive state for media buys per capita, since it has four big markets plus close to a dozen smaller ones and you need to buy them all to make a dent.

I’m not suggesting that this is not a catastrophe, both economically and in terms of physical well-being or that there are not terrible long-term health consequences for the disease, only that we don’t really know the CFR because we have no good estimate for the number of those who actually have had the disease and there is also a problem with the number of deaths, since especially at the beginning of the pandemic, many were attributed to other causes. OTOH, some may have died later when they supposedly “recovered” from damage inflicted by the disease— are those all getting classified properly as due to Covid?

Every dollar the GOP has to spend in Mississippi, Alaska (which might actually be closer than most people realize), or Kansas is one dollar they can’t send in North (or South) Carolina, Iowa, Montana, Texas, etc.
