About that WaPo story on Covid mutating…

Scientists in Houston on Wednesday released a study of more than 5,000 genetic sequences of the coronavirus that reveals the virus’s continual accumulation of mutations, one of which may have made it more contagious.

The new report, however, did not find that these mutations have made the virus deadlier or changed clinical outcomes. All viruses accumulate genetic mutations, and most are insignificant, scientists say.

Also, the protections we should be taking (disinfecting, sanitizing, washing hands) work just as effectively on any version of the virus.

So…I signed up for the PA trump rally to mess with the totals and now I’m on the email list and just got this PA specific appeal

President Trump needs you to stop the Liberal Democrats in their tracks and request your ballot to vote SAFELY and SECURELY.
Request your ballot here: vote.donaldjtrump.com
President Trump is fighting for the future of Pennsylvania, but he can’t do it without you.

uhhhhh….???? I couldn’t finagle using the link for an imaginary friend, but how is this anything other than a mail-in ballot?

Once this festering pustule has been vanquished I’ll sage my laptop to get the trump slime off it.

I’ve got three ballot applications from the Trump campaign. It’s twice the size of the ballot, the other side is a picture of the orange turd with his dumb fake smile and some bullshit about making your vote matter or some shit. You have to tear off the picture of trump and the actual application is the same as the one the county sends you when you make a request. This is the first year ever that any Republican mailings have been addressed to me directly. And there have been a bunch of them. From Trump and David Purdue’s campaign mostly. Some scary Jon Ossoff ones too, I get those about once a week.

He gave a half hearted correction later in the episode.

“We made a mistake at the top of the show and we want to correct it, as we always do,” the Fox News host stated. “We flipped the names around of a couple people inadvertently. We said police believed Breonna Taylor’s boyfriend was a drug dealer—he might have been. We meant to say her ex-boyfriend. We wanted to correct that, sorry.”

OK, all you black licorice lovers (including me)…read this! I have a jar of licorice drops my brother gave me a few months back, and they’ve been sitting there, and I haven’t eaten them and I’ve been thinking about getting rid of them…uhm, yeah.

A Massachusetts construction worker’s love of black licorice wound up costing him his life. Eating a bag and a half every day for a few weeks threw his nutrients out of whack and caused the 54-year-old man’s heart to stop, doctors reported Wednesday.

“Even a small amount of licorice you eat can increase your blood pressure a little bit,” said Dr. Neel Butala, a cardiologist at Massachusetts General Hospital who described the case in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The problem is glycyrrhizic acid, found in black licorice and in many other foods and dietary supplements containing licorice root extract. It can cause dangerously low potassium and imbalances in other minerals called electrolytes.

Eating as little as 2 ounces of black licorice a day for two weeks could cause a heart rhythm problem, especially for folks over 40, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warns.

Post-tropical cyclone Teddy on Marble Mountain, Newfoundland weather radar from Environment Canada.

weather.gc.ca

Teddy’s looking pretty ragged now. The National Hurricane Center in Miami just issued their last report on the storm.

At 1100 PM AST (0300 UTC), the center of Post-Tropical Cyclone Teddy
was located near latitude 51.0 North, longitude 57.3 West based on
the Marble Mountain, Newfoundland, radar and surface observations
along the west coast of Newfoundland. The post-tropical cyclone
is moving toward the north-northeast near 32 mph (52 km/h), and
this general motion is expected to continue through Thursday. On
the forecast track, the center of Teddy should move closer to the
northwestern Newfoundland coast tonight and into the Labrador Sea on
Thursday before merging with a larger extratropical low.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts.
Little change in strength is forecast before the system merges with
the extratropical low on Thursday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 205 miles (335 km)
from the center.

North Korea ‘killed and burned South Korean official’ (BBC)

A South Korean official has been shot dead and burned by North Korean troops, said the South’s defence ministry which condemned the “brutal act”.

Seoul said the man had disappeared from a patrol boat near the border and was later found in the North’s waters.

North Korean soldiers shot him, then poured oil over his body and set it alight, the ministry said. It had come to this conclusion based on its analysis of “diverse intelligence”.

Pyongyang has not commented.

North Korea has tightened its borders and is thought to have a “shoot-to-kill” policy in place to prevent the coronavirus from entering the country.

I did go watch it and at one point Steve Schmidt mentioned the ACLU fighting back against Trump’s election meddling so I decided to make a donation to the ACLU this evening.

Yesterday I called my senators to tell them to fight as dirty as necessary to save this election and the supreme court because traditions have been shattered. I’ve make a number of donations to senators and the MN DFL over the last month and I voted on Monday, so I’ve done some stuff to help.

Someone called in with a question about making sure that all the criminals wind up in jail and Steve Schmidt went on a lame rant about how it wasn’t appropriate to want to lock up the opposition. Picture of things to come after the election. There was only about 10 minutes left so that’s when I shut it off.

well, she could shut the fuck up about the filibuster and stop believing that this is 1983… and I don’t mean this as DiFi as a woman, but she has a peculiar habit about being a traditionalist regarding Senate procedures at the absolute worse times and maybe that’s based on the press asking her certain questions in certain ways to get an anticipated response but if she wants to make an impact on Judiciary, she should be keeping receipts on all of the GOP toadies who have been granted access into the courts and be ready to impeach them once a Dem administration comes to pass. After all the GOP is throwing people into the judiciary who’ve never been in a courtroom, tried a case and are even under censure for behavior. I would much rather have DiFi weigh in on that (not that she would ever get asked).

LGBTQ+ people belong everywhere—in the corner office, in the classroom, in the military, and in the halls where laws are made. While we are moving toward greater inclusion and equality for all people, the tide of history only advances when people make themselves fully visible.

They belong wherever they are. And they come from everywhere.

They came to congregate in big cities because there they found a community and were not treated as freaks and outcasts.

Think about all those GI’s returning to NYC or SF after WW2 and deciding to stay there with other people like themselves that they had met in the course of their service rather than go back to their small towns and remain repressed and closeted or risk the consequences.

Sitting here printing flyers for our Voter Registration/Education drives. Yesterday at our table outside the library, I started shifting the message from VR to mail-in or absentee walk-in voting, especially for codgers. Almost no-one was interested in that, most were determined to use the polling place in November. (It’s right across the parking lot.) One old guy made it plain: “Soldiers went to war and died for it. I’m not going to be scared away from the voting line.” Hoping he wasn’t a Republican.

I am generally in favor of in-person voting over mail-in….under normal circumstances.

If so, they have a case.

If not, then case closed…

paying off a debt of another is a gift to the individual

that they were paid directly to the creditor is irrelevsnt

Yup. That’s why I’m pushing walk-in absentee, though I don’t think our structures are in place to handle a large switch. It’s the middle ground between safety and security. Neither the Left or Right in this area trust the USPS to deliver a clean vote. (Our rules require the ballot be delivered on Election Day by noon, regardless of postmark.)

Well, these asschapeaus seem to be full of their own bravado, reading the article at Bellingcat. That said, it only takes a couple of these numbnutz to create a terrorist cell.

The problem with terrorism, wherever it comes from, is the FBI or other authorities can stop a hundred planned attacks, and things go on as normal. It only takes one to get through for everyone to be thrown into upheaval.

Same.

From the Bellingcat article was this bit:

In the end, Whitebear decides to put a Trump/Pence flag [sic, it’s a yard sign, not a flag] on display, “With mouse traps on the backside…lol!”

The sign is pictured, put up near a house with mousetraps attached to the backside of the sign (presumably a deterrent against theft). That would work for a Biden/Harris sign as well.

So Fox is going to call the election for Trump on election Night based on in-person vote tallies. Then Trump will challenge as many mail-in ballots as he can so the issue goes to the courts.

It’s the only way he can win, and again, he cannot afford to lose.

It’s a Texas Goat Rodeo! (Juanita Jean’s)

Back in July, Gov. Abbott extended early voting in the November election by one week. Early voting will begin October 13th instead of Oct. 19.

Well, here it is late September and The Quorum Report - behind paywall - is reporting this morning under breaking news that Texas Republican Party State Chairman Allen West (yes, that Allen West), “Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller, conservative activist Dr. Steve Hotze, Sen. Charles Perry, Sen. Donna Campbell, and others have signed onto a lawsuit against GOP Gov. Greg Abbott focused on his decision to extend early voting in Texas.”

No shoot, Sherlock, they are going to the Texas Supreme Court, who took “Equal Justice Under the Law” off the court building and replaced it with “Attilas the Huns” once they seated nine far right conservatives on the bench.

They waited until campaign materials were printed, people to work the polls were hired, locations were reserved, and things would get real crazy if you change things that are written in print and hanging on peoples’ refrigerators doors. And then, and only then, did they want to shorten early voting time.

Juanita Jean Herownself seems happy about it.

And then, to add a third ring to this circus, they went to the Texas Supreme Court, which I may have mentioned is total Republican. Four of the nine of them are up for reelection and face a strong challenge by four Democratic women with sparkling credentials and a boatload of money. So, no matter which way the four of them rule, they are going to piss off this group of Republicans or that group of Republicans. If nothing else, Democrats will know their names when they go vote and what they do for a living, which is something judges like to hide now that Texas doesn’t have straight ticket voting.

Oh Lordy, this is going to be fun. You know, in fights like these, I always say it’s sad that one side has to be the winner. But no, Texas Republicans have been kind enough to give us a case when both Republican sides lose no matter what happens.

From The NY Times it seems like they aren’t investing the Clinton Foundation, they are investigating the FBI agents that were investigating the Foundation:

Mr. Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut assigned by Mr. Barr to review the Russia inquiry, has sought documents and interviews about how federal law enforcement officials handled an investigation around the same time into allegations of political corruption at the Clinton Foundation, according to people familiar with the matter.

Mr. Durham’s team members have suggested to others that they are comparing the two investigations as well as examining whether investigators in the Russia inquiry flouted laws or policies. It was not clear whether Mr. Durham’s investigators were similarly looking for violations in the Clinton Foundation investigation, nor whether the comparison would be included or play a major role in the outcome of Mr. Durham’s inquiry.
The approach is highly unusual, according to people briefed on the investigation. Though the suspected crimes themselves are not comparable — one involves a possible conspiracy between a presidential campaign and a foreign adversary to interfere in an election, and the other involves potential bribery and corruption — and largely included different teams of investigators and prosecutors, Mr. Durham’s efforts suggest the scope of his review is broader than previously known.

Bold on my part. The delay might be because they opened up a Pandora’s Box of high corruption.

This isn’t Durham’s first rodeo.

Oh, if only it were that simple. Durham’s investigation was supposed to be about allegations that the DOJ was being used by the Obama admin to actively kneecap Trump’s campaign through false allegations and illegal intelligence gathering. Now, at the 11th hour, suddenly Durham swings into a totally unrelated investigation involving Trump’s opponent. Related:

As the 2016 election approached, then-candidate Donald Trump’s rhetoric escalated. He would lose only if there was fraud committed against him, he said at multiple points, and he regularly derided the process as “rigged.” …

When he won the election anyway, this idea that he had somehow been cheated persisted. After all, he had lost the popular vote, so he has repeatedly as president asserted that somehow millions of illegal votes were cast without being detected, enough to suggest that it was he, not Hillary Clinton, who was actually the choice of the overall electorate four years ago…

“Mr. President, real quickly, win, lose or draw in this election, will you commit here today for a peaceful transfer of power after the election?” a reporter asked. He noted various incidents of violence that have occurred in recent weeks, apparently to demonstrate the elevated national temperature. “Will you commit to making sure that there is a peaceful transferral of power after the election?”

Trump’s answer was not reassuring.

“Well,” he began, “we’re going to have to see what happens.”…

“We want to have—” Trump continued, before changing direction. “Get rid of the ballots and you’ll have a very trans — we’ll have a very peaceful—”

We’ll awkwardly interject here to illustrate how Trump’s thought process was probably playing out. His argument, which he seems perhaps to actually believe, is that mail-in ballots are subject to massive fraud, which is not at all demonstrably true. Since those ballots will be counted after Election Day, he views them (or, at least, hopes America views them) as suspect. While counting the ballots is obviously necessary to determine the will of voters, Trump argues that the inclusion of those ballots is itself an act that introduces instability and uncertainty, a factor that will erode public confidence in the count. Again, this is only because he incorrectly claims that these ballots are subject to rampant fraud, but that’s his position.

But he doesn’t really finish that thought before he realizes what he’s about to say. He begins, “We’ll have a very peaceful—” But the only way to end that sentence is with “transfer of power.” And the only way you have a transfer of power is if he loses. And he can’t admit he loses. So, instead, he abruptly transitions.

“There won’t be a transfer, frankly,” he continued. “There’ll be a continuation.”…

About state legislative races this year:

Democrats are fielding more than 2,000 [new] legislative candidates this year while Republicans have put forth just 1,700, indicating a possible enthusiasm gap between the parties. The gulf is much smaller, though, than it was in 2018, when more than 2,600 Democrats ran for state legislatures nationwide versus just 1,300 Republicans (albeit for a somewhat different set of seats). Partly, though, that reflects Democrats’ success two years ago: The party went into the midterms controlling less than 43% of legislative seats up that year but now holds 47% of all seats on the ballot in November.

Here’s what we know are some of Trump’s plans for victory:

-Make the mail late
-Call Biden’s win fake
-Maybe something with courts?
-Convince state legislators to just, you know, don’t let Biden win, or something.

Does this sound like a guy who thinks he’s winning?

He won the last time by gaming the system.

He has to game it a lot more aggressively this time as he has gotten people’s dander up and can no longer count on apathy and indifference to suppress the vote in his favor.

But this time around he he has not only a criminal organization and a foreign government working for him, but also the full powers of the Executive Branch at his disposal.

We need to be prepared for a clusterfucking goat rodeo of an election such as nobody has ever seen.

After all the GOP is throwing people into the judiciary who’ve never been in a courtroom, tried a case and are even under censure for behavior. Don’t sell yourself short. You’ve got lots of experience navigating government (and maybe private?) programs for your son. You’re not a homemaker; you’re a home manager. JFC, you’re probably more qualified for public office than Sarah Palin. Being a mayor and governor for a short time didn’t make her qualified to be VP, but it looked good on paper I guess. I think the problem a lot of people have is not seeing how skills they actually have transfer to other things. To me one of the biggest skills you need to run for office is self promotion. It’s a skill I lack for myself, but I’m kickass at promoting other smart, capable people.

What Repubs learned from Watergate is that the answer to future scandals…was to stick together and gaslight the fuck out of the public. Portray impeachment not as the enforcement of the law, but a political process by the opposition using drummed up charges to attack a “successful” president as “payback” for an electoral loss. That all they need to do is deny the Dems the voted needed for removal and the public will eventually “move on.”

it’s not just ‘we do not learn from history’. Look at the media and their fond, fond memories of 2016. For a whole lot of our discourse, the problem is not learning the lessons of things like 2016, but learning the exact wrong lessons. The media has fully and lovingly embraced the role they had 2016, given Trump an even softer hand despite him ramping up the hatred and fearmongering toward them, committed even further to ‘both sides same thing’ and horse race coverage, given the GOP even more benefit of the doubt, etc. They only learned that they were ‘too harsh on Republicans’ and ‘not adversarial enough toward Dems’ because of fucking course.

Except if Trump is behind on Election Night. Then he will have to adopt a different strategy. Maybe freeze counts in states where he is ahead and allow continued counts in states where he is behind? re: #233 Hecuba’s daughter

Except if Trump is behind on Election Night. Then he will have to adopt a different strategy. Maybe freeze counts in states where he is ahead and allow continued counts in states where he is behind? Maybe challenge any red state results that go for Biden? Interesting to see what stunt he pulls. Or maybe if he loses, take a plane to Moscow on November 3?

If he doesn’t “win” on Election Night, then it’s going to make court battles difficult to impossible. There’s virtually no way for the courts to rule that some states can continue to count until Trump “wins,” but others must stop as soon as he’s “won.” Bush v. Gore only addressed a recount, not the counting of votes received by the state’s deadline.

re: #231 Citizen K

it’s not just ‘we do not learn from history’.

Wrong for whom?
Wrong for the good of our country? Well yes. 1000 x yes!
Wrong for the profitability of their publication? No way. Very helpful for them in fact.

It’s becoming more obvious that the plan is to declare the election “over” on Election Night, that any votes counted past midnight are “invalid,” and try to use the courts to overrule states who continue to count those “invalid” votes rather than simply certifying results that declare Trump the “winner.”

And he can try, and Biden will stand up and say that it’s not over until every vote is counted, and 2/3 of the country will agree.

The only way Trump will win is if we let him get away with it.

It’s clear that Trump has no idea where he votes. He went to vote by mail when he was living in NYC because he couldn’t remember his proper polling place.

Now, he’s supposedly living at Mar a Lago, but that’s not a valid residence for purposes of a ballot. That technically means that NYC is still his proper polling place.

I wouldn’t be surprised in the slightest if we come to learn that he tried voting in both NY and FL.

Depends… he may not be eligible to vote at all, he’s publicly declared that NY is no longer his state of residence, so he might not be able to vote there. And if MAL isn’t a legal residential address, then he might not be able to vote in Florida either.

Of course, knowing the criminality projection complex that is Trump, he’ll probably try and vote in both states.

If it was bloomberg directly it would be a gift.
Gift tax is a pittance /rounding error to him

The $15k is per each individual giver/recipient combo and is per year, not lifetime. The lifetime limit is about $5 million now, and only kicks in if the $15k limit is exceeded in a year and is then usually taken from the givers estate tax exemption.
