No ‘Mistake’ From This Administration* Can Be Presumed Innocent, Charlie Pierce

We are at the point now where no mistake is considered to be innocent. Every mistake is presumed guilty until proven guilty. This is why I was more reluctant than I should have been to believe uncritically the story of this woman who allegedly sent ricin to the White House, nor am I convinced that Iran is suddenly so close to building a nuclear weapon that unilateral sanctions are called for. I believe that pack o’bastids at Camp Runamuck to be capable of almost anything, and that’s not a healthy way for a citizen to behave, especially during the time of a massive public-health emergency that already has killed more than 200,000 Americans.

Nevertheless, when the Centers for Disease Control tied itself in knots on Monday, it was not hard to see the long fingers of the White House political apparatus at work on the ropes.

100+ papers demanded Bill Clinton resign over what Daddy used to call a “popsicle job”.

These same papers gladly lied us into a war that killed my son.

This is why I have NO CONFIDENCE in the Corporate Controlled Conservative Press and I expect them to gladly transcribe every lie given to them by the Republican Party.

re: #180 A Mom Anon

I’ve been thinking about running for something locally but I have zero experience and have been a full time mom/homemaker for over 25 years. And this is Georgia which means dealing with some truly horrible republicans. I’d also guess I would get death threats along with my family. I’m investigating if there’s any way I qualify for any office.

You’re selling yourself short on your experience if you’ve been a full time mother and homemaker for twenty-five years then.

If you’ve attended city council meetings or school board meetings you already know what it is they deal with.

As for homemaker, you manage schedules, budgets, time, events, &c. Pretty much the same thing politicians do.

As for qualifying for any office, usually the only qualifications are being registered to vote and live in the district.

Several people already gave good resources for information on how to run, though I didn’t see “contact your local party office” as one of those.

I wouldn’t worry about receiving death threats. That is very unlikely.

Depending on how large a town you live in partially determines how you campaign for the office. (When I ran for my village board in 2012, I just went around town and knocked on every door. If you live in a large city you might need to do other things; those resources and your local party can help you with that.)

In the last election, our state Democratic Party promoted women running for something, resulting in the largest slate of women up-and-down the ballot in the state’s history (over eight hundred).

I found the hardest part of running for office was screwing up the courage to go fill out the paperwork to declare candidacy.

No ‘Mistake’ From This Administration* Can Be Presumed Innocent, Charlie Pierce

If it was just the White House saying it, I would be sceptical. However, Customs and Border Protection arrested a woman crossing the border from Québec as the suspect after the RCMP tipped off CBP. She is also accused of sending similar packages to the Texas Legislature. The packages were mailed from the same post office in Québec.

Police search St-Hubert condo after woman arrested in ricin letter case (Montréal Gazette, in English)

Mounties say there is a “very clear link” between building being searched and suspect Pascale Cécile Véronique Ferrier, who was arrested by American authorities at the border.

A Quebec woman suspected of sending a contaminated letter to the White House has been identified by many media outlets as Pascale Cécile Véronique Ferrier, 53, of St-Hubert.

The letter, possibly containing the poison ricin, was intercepted at a U.S. government facility that screens mail addressed to President Donald Trump, a law enforcement official told the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. No official at a law enforcement agency on either side of the border had confirmed the identity of the suspect by Monday evening.

Touche.

I’ll expand on my little quip and lay out the obvious. Trump envisions himself and what is a proper leadership model as demonstrated by feudal European monarchies.

Absolute power is necessary to carry out every little whim and all advisors are generally handpicked loons, con men, and psychopaths. Family dynasty is ensured by inbreeding and close ties to sycophant families, as evidence by Trump’s continuous remarks about “good genes” in his diatribes throughout the years.

Trump is no Putin. Putin is content to maintain democratic institutions as a front for authoritarian rule. Trump is not nearly as sophisticated or smart. Trump wants a monarchy- simple to grasp, easy to digest, and handed to him by an enabling and criminal Republican Party. And they are giving it to them as long as they get their own fiefdoms,

it will not get to scotus
they wouldn’t touch it

as much as they’ve been delegitimized from an equal player in checks and balances, committing justice, even ‘just calling balls and strikes’, into instead a partisan rubber stamp, if they hand trump the election (and the power) they would invalidate their own reason for being and Roberts will not do that.

as a refresher, i posted this on May 15.

most every scenario everyone has concocted over the last six months
- can he postpone the election
- what if he wont leave
- can states ignore the results
on and on have been pretty well addressed in the long list of links in there.

a lot of things are possible (a plane could fall on my house today)
a lot less are plausable
a lot less than that are likely
trump is not a svengali
he got lucky last time.
the deck is stacked against him this time for a host of reasons i dont have to mention

The election will take place and on time.
There will be few if any real, consequential shenanigans.

pretty much all he can do is what he’s doing:
- muck with usps delivery
- try and throw a wrench into mail voting
- disenfranchise as many floridians as possible, etc
ie try and keep our votes from counting.

The problem is that there really is no public accountability, despite how much there supposedly is ‘on paper’. If a local gov’t isn’t being cowed by the police in fear, it’s because they’re on the exact same page with this shit. And police basically own all the guns as well as control the real purse strings, so they’re nigh-fucking-invincible.

That’s why so often feds have to get involved when local authorities bigfoot on everything so blatantly…except look who controls the feds.

never happen (not obama or biden either)

If the DOJ had the goods on any of these folks, they would already have moved forward. We can therefore conclude that there’s nothing legitimate (or semi-legitimate) to charge them with.

Charging them with Trumped-up charges would look like the dirty political trick it would be, and would enrage Democrats and many non-Democrats. Meanwhile, the moment the case made it to a judge, the judge would kick it for lacking foundation. And then Barr and his cronies would be civilly sued for malicious prosecution. This would also be an impeachable offense.

further, the foundation has a board of directors. 2 of 9 are clintons. hillary isnt on the board. and there’s a substantial management team.

unless something specific really did exist fundamental to the foundation itself, booting out two board members, even ones who abused the foundation in some way, would not threaten the foundation’s existence.

My $.02 would be thinking of the population makeup of the states.

Here’s why Biden’s lead is big and could get bigger, Jennifer Rubin, WaPo

This is where the usual caveats appear (things can change overnight!). However, I am hard-pressed to come up with a series of events that could change the direction of the race. From everything we’ve seen, Biden is more than holding his own in the final stretch of the race.

any polling result within the MOE could mean the current leader/loser is not actually leading/losing

OH and GA are both virtually tied

either could go either way

waves matter

I think it might be the percentage of the voting population that is black, and, especially, female.

After I found out that they had removed sorting machines at my post office (a REALLY busy post office) I cancelled my absentee ballot request and will either vote early in person or day of (my precinct is never very crowded and only a few doors down from my house, so I can go back later if, for some reason, there is a crowd.)

They added more early voting locations in my county, so I can go to a library about 10 minutes from home instead of having to drive to the county seat. And we have the new two-step voting machines—touch screen (they give out swabs to do it) and it prints out your votes, then you insert it in another machine to scan and count.

That’s a big part of it. Stacey Abrams has done a very good job of working at the local level with her group Fair Fight to get people registered and I believe they are also keeping an eye on corruption of the process. If we can get younger voters and women out there we might see a big change. This state is still staunchly red in many places, it’s a tough slog, but if we can win some federal level seats and swing some things on state and local levels we can kick the door open for Dems here. But it’s a totally uphill climb.

Have to remind myself that not everyone is a political junkie like we are, loads of people wrapped up in the arts, or sports or other pastimes…. that rarely see politics as being a concern, 2020 has kind of changed that.

After going viral with an unusual press release saying they found 9 discarded military ballots and all 9 were cast for Trump, the Department of Justice has deleted the release and issued a new one saying it’s 7 for Trump and they dunno about the other 2.

So, uh, if they were for the general election, how the hell do they know they were for Trump? They opened them? Why didn’t they just get them delivered to the proper addressee? How did they know they were military (I supposed delivered from a military base, APO/FPO/DPO)? Are PA ballots stamped or postage paid (with no cancellation)? What is going on?

I got blowback just 6 months ago from my assertions that “militia” types would be used by Trump to cement his rule. Not so much anymore as well.

Don’t pretend to be surprised when 2 days before the election, Trump calls on all “loyal Americans” (meaning Oathkeepers, III %ers, and assorted loony bin fellow travelers) to secure the White House. Also don’t be surprised when after Trump loses the election he calls on these same types to invade Capitol Hill and “arrest” Democratic Party members… meaning free license to kill them if desired.

Here’s the thing that scares me: It is considered conventional wisdom that right-wing leaning folks are all-in with GOP and are armed to the teeth, while the left isn’t completely all-in with the Democrats, and they don’t pack heat.

What will it take to make the left even more energized and willing to take action if Hair Furor doesn’t accept the election results if they don’t go his way?

Brave Sir John:

When CNN’s Manu Raju asked him about Trump’s refusal to commit to a peaceful transition of power, he did say “no,” it was not appropriate. When asked if the Republicans would do something about it if Trump refused to leave office? “I’m not going to answer a hypothetical,” Cornyn said. Then he actually went onto the Senate floor and said “It’s terrifying to imagine what might come next,” if Democrats win the Senate and move to balance the Supreme Court. He’s not terrified by a Trump coup. He’s terrified by democracy.

We have a candidate for Senator here who wants mandatory genitalia exams for any girl who wants to play sports, to exclude any kid who might be in transition. Notice that does not apply to boys. There is no bottom/low they won’t sink to, excuses or not.

What Kelly Loeffler won’t tell you, and may not know, is that this sort of examination will not just affect transgender girls, but also intersex persons assigned female at birth. We only have to look to what’s happening with Caster Semenya, who would have to use testosterone lowering meds to run in the 800 meter race. If you think this is going to stop with the family doctor taking a look and signing off on a form…it won’t stop there.

I also don’t think they need any excuse at all to be progressively worse, that’s pretty much a given no matter what else happens. They have shown us they have no low they won’t sink to.
