A. What the fuck does that even mean? Protect them from what? Trump shooting them on 5th Ave?

B. It’s the “first ever” because nobody else has been stupid enough to make such an idiotic statement.

C. Does Kelly O’Donnell ever do anything except quote the moron verbatim?

Also, what the fuck is this shit? Big Pharma said no to $100 Trump cards, so now he’s promising $200 cards?

Here’s an Advanced Course in Ratf*cking to Collapse Representative Democracy, Charlie Pierce

Among other things:

Gellman cites a little-known—OK, I didn’t know about it—legal maneuver that may prove consequential. For 40 years, elections were held under a consent decree by which the Republican Party was required to pre-clear a whole syllabus of ratfcking techniques, most of them aimed at intimidating minority voters, that the Republicans used under the rubric of “ballot security.” (The order had its beginnings in the 1981 gubernatorial election in New Jersey.) Among their other benefits to democracy, these techniques were how William Rehnquist got his start in Republican politics. Anyway, in 2018, employing the same umbrella-in-the-rain Chief Justice John Roberts applied to the Voting Rights Act, a federal judge let the order mandating pre-clearance lapse. The result, according to Gellman, was pretty much what you’d have expected.

This year, with a judge no longer watching, the Republicans are recruiting 50,000 volunteers in 15 contested states to monitor polling places and challenge voters they deem suspicious-looking. Trump called in to Fox News on August 20 to tell Sean Hannity, “We’re going to have sheriffs and we’re going to have law enforcement and we’re going to have, hopefully, U.S. attorneys” to keep close watch on the polls. For the first time in decades, according to Clark, Republicans are free to combat voter fraud in “places that are run by Democrats.”

Well, according to a bunch of GOP stalwarts a pre-existing condition means that COVID-19 can’t kill you. (Well at least in terms of whether your death counts as a COVID-19 death.)

I would have still owed $422 to CVS yesterday for a prescription after this bribery (yes, the one my medication manager hired by the evil too big to fail employer will not cover). It’s an insult in addition to being a bribe. I’m able to pay for my prescription out of pocket but a lot of people need that money. It’s still a bribe. And an insult.

re: #12 Backwoods_Sleuth

[Embedded content]

I looked through this policy..

One of the criticisms are that they’re going by percentage rather than total number overstays. If your goal is to minimize the number of visa overstays given total number of visa holders, you should go by percentage rates, _not_ by total numbers
— that is always how US immigration has managed things.

For example, we allow countries to join the US VWP (Visa Waiver program), if their overstay rate is less than 2% (IIRC). Doing it by total numbers doesn’t make sense, because then larger countries would _never_ be able to join, even if they’re visa overstay rate was ridiculously large. Having a minimum number of visa overstays before a country gets hit with restrictions for countries with both a trivial number of visa applicants and a trivial number of visa overstays, but above the 10% ratio seems like a reasonable solution for this problem, if this is a problem that needs solving.

However, and this is key, these restrictions are _not_ for the purpose of allowing people to travel without visas, they are for people to come on a student visa. Getting a visa already requires proving that you have sufficient ties to your home country, and no plans to stay in the US. If you’re going to apply for any STEM field, further checks may apply. Plenty of people get rejected for student visas.

If you’re from a country with very high overstay rates, and/or which is on the official US government hate list, you _already_ get subject to lots of additional scrutiny, with an assumption that you are either trying to immigrate, or are trying to steal technology, act on behalf of your country etc…

Additionally, and what the real problem is that only a 2 or 4 year visa is granted to begin with, with 6 month extensions which are not guaranteed. How do you come for an undergraduate program if you _only_ are guaranteed to have 2 or 4 year stays, let alone Grad school?

An additional problem: If you were born in one of these countries, even if you never were a citizen of that country or are a citizen of another country, these restrictions will apply to you.

Undergraduate programs, and PhD programs which bring in talent will be hit. Short term MBA programs which are real cash cows.. not that much, but there are likely _relatively_ few people applying from these countries, and they generally finish up in < 2 years.

IMO that stuff is better left unsaid. Accusing someone of having no honor should be a good way to get under the skins of Republicans, particularly the ones from the south that nurture the delusion they have honor so fervently.

That Trump and the GOP openly state they want to confirm a SCOTUS pick so SCOTUS can determine the election outcome should, all by itself, be reason to demand no hearings until the next president takes office.
If the GOP insists on proceeding, they should have to commit to requiring that the newly appointed Justice recuse from any ruling related to the election. Like Rehnquist did on the Nixon tapes.
Every single one should be made to go on record with this.

I deliberately and with full intention put a slice of processed cheese to melt on the noodles at the end of cooking…because that’s a thing Koreans do (true), and therefore I have to experience it (lie I tell to myself).

Probably the best shortcut food I’ve learned to appreciate right now is a tub of white miso and chicken stock for miso soup, because it has a mercury-amalgam quality to it where you can put in pretty much anything (mostly vegetables in my attempts) and get a decent meal.

Just in case you accidentally wander into a voting booth one day, there’s some things you should know, and one of them is, there’s absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we’re the greatest country in the world. We’re 7th in literacy, 27th in math, 22nd in science, 49th in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, 3rd in median household income, number 4 in labor force, and number 4 in exports. We lead the world in only 3 categories: number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending, where we spend more than the next 26 countries combined. 25 of whom are allies.

I asked for a mail-in ballot, but, I’m likely going to vote in person.
My signature varies from day to day. I could see some A-hole invalidating my mail-in ballot because of it.

Not sure what state you’re in, but here I had to call and cancel my order for a mail-in ballot in order to be able to vote in person. Please check your state requirements.

Haven’t had a problem before here in FL. As long as you don’t do both you’re OK

You can’t beg them.

You can’t shame them.

You can’t reason with them.

You can’t negotiate with them.

You can’t appeal to their patriotism.

You must outvote them, defeat them and then ignore them when they are in the House and Senate minority.

Glad to hear it—your FL vote will probably have more impact than my SC one. When I called to cancel, the lady was astounded that I had ordered it in May—you could order primary and general ballots at the same time. Our presidential primary was in February, but the House and other races were in May.

The “Obama phones” were Reagan phones.

Not according to my brainwashed nephew who endlessly called then “N-CLANG” phones on his Facebook page.

I want Limbaugh to live to see Trump lose. Then he can die, and after his widow gets all the money, I hope she marries a woman a week later.

Well, the race is on
And here comes pride up the backstretch
Heartaches are goin’ to the inside
My tears are holdin’ back
They’re tryin’ not to fall
My heart’s out of the runnin’
True love’s scratched for another’s sake
The race is on and it looks like heartache
And the winner loses all

You have to renew your request for vote by mail ballots every two years in FL.
They are supposed to mail them mail them out in the next week
