Well, they’re partially right, the Satanic Temple* is emblematic of left-wing and Enlightnment views. Their tenets include:
- benevolence
- justice
- individual autonomy and respecting the freedom’s of others.
- empathy
- rejecting tyrannical authority
- a reason and science based world view

I think most Americans once they think about things would agree with those tenets at least partially.

They’re also using the RFRA to try to interfere with unreasonable abortion restrictions that have no medical justification, and aren’t popular with the majority of Americans.

Ok, couldn’t help myself, clicked over to see what this stupidity was about, and came across this dandy:

One tenet, in particular, is notable: “The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.” In other words, the law is dispensable in the pursuit of justice — a remarkable statement coming from an attorney. The ends of equity justify the means of tearing down institutions. Sound familiar?

This is emblematic of the conservative movement’s failing. The “law” is not an end unto itself. Rather it is a means to justice. When a law is unjust, it should be stricken down - either by the courts, the legislature, or (if available) the people via referendum. Slavery, and segregation were legal but they were unjust. Like this shouldn’t be hard to figure out.

one of my favorite genres of fiction in the last few decades has been “the devil as hero” or at least “misunderstood protagonist.” The TV series Lucifer does this quite well. The only “President” Trump will be in 10 years is a largely ceremonial position in RT In Russia or some other entirely made-up media outlet under the complete control of Putin.

All media access by Trump will be limited to heavily scripted and edited videos of Trump railing against the United States and its leadership and policies under Democratic politicians and Republican “traitors”. No more Twitter, no FB, no off-the-cuff remarks will be allowed under the “protection” of his Russian benefactors.

Trump will however be afforded a prominent position under Putin as the single greatest trophy propaganda turncoat and traitor in world history.

The first question Dems should ask Amy Coney Barrett is a version of “If appointed to the Supreme Court will you uphold the First Amendment to the Constitution, particularly the separation of church and state?

Such a question should end with “…I know you are going to lie to me, so please try to make your lies more believable than Trump’s lies.”

A rather thorough article about Barke—he sounds like a real charmer (his compassion for the son-of-a-millionaire rapist is just stunning):

To sum up, Dr. Barke worked for the campaign for republican candidate Ben Carson, then volunteered for the Trump campaign; concocted a paranoid theory without scientific proof about a self-destructing healthcare plan by Democrats; published about this unfounded conspiracy theory without full disclosure of his political activism; was a defendant in a wrongful death lawsuit; and is a proud climate-change science denier who, as an elected School Board Member for Los Alamitos Unified School District, promotes the notion that schools should teach “alternative facts” about … science and evolution. We also know he likes to golf (wink!) and importantly, he has compassion - for sex offenders.

Back from afternoon shift at the sort of socially-distanced VR table. First guy I talked at this morning was a full-blown Trumpster, hat and all, who seemed to be leading a captive audience in the opening queue. He went on to tell us masks were useless. Then told everyone about his stay in the local hospital with CV19. It’s OK, though, he’s been cleared and “most of the local hospitalizations are S. Georgia border-jumpers anyway.” Asked a lady of a certain age if she wanted our Absentee Voter package, and she said; “It ought to be outlawed.”

I’d get her to explain her interpretation of the first and ask follow-ups from there. I see it as a way to try to get around it turning into accusations of Dems saying it’s about her Catholicism. Republicans are going to go there but Dems need to try to keep it about the relationship between church and the state. Regardless, the confirmation hearing is going to be a shitshow, but Dems have to give it the good old college try.

I know a lot of people are going to try and focus on “outcome” questions, but I think we would be better if we pressed on “process” questions - that’s ultimately what did Bork in. Ask questions like “what unenumerated rights exist under the ninth amendment? which branch of government is best suited to determine those rights?” Or things like “when investigating the purpose of a law and its constitutionality, what sources would you look at or consider? The Congressional record? Public statements of politicians? Presidential signing statements?”

Those are the sorts of questions that will tell us a lot more about what kind of justice the nominee would be.

And *only* seven parties running slates (Dems, Reps, Cons, Working Families, Greens, Libs and “Independence”). Oh, and an all-Democratic slate of judges: four names and the note “vote for any four”…..

She’s on the permanent absentee list: I asked for mine back on 9/15, so I’m not surprised I haven’t gotten it yet)

Grain of salt but a number of news sources are reporting this:

BEIJING, China (AP) — A Chinese pharmaceutical company said Thursday the coronavirus vaccine it is developing should be ready by early 2021 for distribution worldwide, including the United States.

Yin Weidong, the CEO of SinoVac, vowed to apply to the US Food and Drug Administration to sell CoronaVac in the United States if it passes its third and final round of testing in humans. Yin said he personally has been given the experimental vaccine.

“At the very beginning, our strategy was designed for China and for Wuhan. Soon after that in June and July we adjusted our strategy, that is to face the world,” Yin said, referring to the Chinese city were the virus first emerged.

“Our goal is to provide the vaccine to the world including the US, EU and others,” Yin said.

Stringent regulations in the US, European Union, Japan and Australia have historically blocked the sale of Chinese vaccines. But Yin said that could change.

SinoVac is developing one of China’s top four vaccine candidates along with state-owned SinoPharm, which has two in development, and military-affiliated private firm CanSino.

More than 24,000 people are participating in clinical trials of CoronaVac in Brazil, Turkey, and Indonesia, with additional trials scheduled for Bangladesh and possibly Chile, Yin said. SinoVac chose those countries because they all had serious outbreaks, large populations and limited research and development capacity, he said

According to our ABC affiliate, WSB, there were “about 300 people there, mostly black.” He was also not IN Atlanta. AF1 flew into Dobbins Air Base in Marietta, GA and proceeded to the Cobb Galleria Center, which is a popular spot for trade shows and smaller “con” type gatherings. It’s a big place but it’s not made to hold huge crowds, like tens of thousands at a time.

The deeper conspiracy is the Shredder is a ninja, the most popular G I Joe masked characters are both ninjas, and Darth Vader’s mask is patterned off of the samurai helmet of Date Masamune….

I’ll admit to knowing nothing about Date Masamune, but I do recall that the Metropolitan Museum in NY once had a suit of black-enameled armor in their Arms And Armor Hall which I always thought of as “Darth Vader’s great-great-grandfather” - it had the same flare-bottomed helmet and wide breastplate (lower-tech, though: obviously) - and was, of course, all black…

This is the scenario I suggested some weeks ago here - what if the US media simply chooses to pretend that Trump won, or that the outcome is in doubt simply because Republicans say it is? The major networks have learned that reality is simply what they say it is for many Americans. If they don’t say there’s a pandemic and hundreds of thousands dead, there isn’t. If they say the economy is great, it is. So what happens if they simply say that Democrats didn’t really win an election?

I agree with her outcome - the American people will ultimately agree that Democrats didn’t win, that reality isn’t real.

Yes, this is about the only positive thing I can infer from the thread I linked - that the usual both-siderist, GOPer-enabling media garbage will only succeed if enough Americans roll over and accept it (in thinking back to 2000, that was an open election which started out with a lot of disillusionment and voter apathy - hence the Ralph Nader support. A similar dynamic played out in 2016. But now? Those apathetic fence-sitters damn well know what they have to lose).

What makes it worse is that Rabin’s efforts and legitimacy are constantly under attack by plenty in the Israeli right. Those attacking him, who despise the smallest notion of a Two State Solution will be empowered by this.
And on top of that, others on the Israeli right who have been against her “Squad” due to actions by Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib will now point to this as further proof that AOC really is hostile to Israel and to Jews.

I don’t see anything - on her Twitter anyway - to indicate she’s actually bailed, just that she’s looking into it. Reading the threads this has spawned, I can see that Rabin has a more… varied past than the usual facile US media histories go into, and that he means very different things to people on different sides.

If she has/does bail, it’s fair to drag her. But if she got promised a “Peace Good!” event and the real arrangements on the ground are something different then ducking out rather than getting used is the right play. It seems unfair to consider her burnt on this data point.

Also, things are a little crazy right now in the US - granted she doesn’t need to run a serious campaign in her district, but we’re all off our game a bit.

They can’t emphasize daily how many lives have been lost and how many have suffered permanent damage? They can’t discuss how the pandemic itself is due to Trump’s negligence — the disease started in China but it could basically have been confined there if we had been proactive with the resources that Obama put in place before Trump dismantled them.

Because again, it would mean they’d have to walk back on their firmly held belief that the GOP are the only legitimate party allowed to exercise power, and Dems are always illegitimate no matter what. They refuse to say it outright, but the fact that they always go out of their way to state how much they need to privilege conservative voices despite them being dominant in the industry for night unto 3 decades speaks volumes.
