Exhilaratingly Weird: Anna Meredith, “Killjoy”

Music • Views: 19,401

YouTube

Taken from the Mercury Prize shortlisted album FIBS, Killjoy is Anna Meredith’s latest single, shot pre-lockdown at Wayne McGregor Studios in February 2020 - annameredith.plctrmm.to

Directed by Ewan Jones Morris and choregraphed by David Ogle, the video elevates the joyful off-kilter colours of the track. The band roll and dance in flowing lines before snapping into unison - all framed by a circle of GoPros.

Anna says: “I’ve ALWAYS wanted to do a dance routine video and always had in the back of my mind that Killjoy - with lead vocals by my amazing drummer, Sam Wilson - would be the perfect track for it.”

“I knew it’d be a huge ask as (in case it’s not obvious) NONE of us are remotely trained or even (booze pending) willing dancers but we worked with brilliant choreographer David Ogle and he made something so much more cool and ambitious than I expected which meant we had to practise together every moment we could.”

Directed by Ewan Jones Morris
Choreographed by David Ogle
Edited by Florence Kennard
Produced by Rachel McWhinney
Colour by ETC

Actually, that’s something of a positive surprise; it’s the first time I can recall a North Korean leader apologizing to his South Korean counterpart for a serious fuckup.

Maybe all those off-the-record conversations between Trump and Putin were about finding him a nice little dacha on the Black Sea coast.

re: #28 Dread Pirate Ron

The antibody studies have not been coming out as quickly has I had hoped.

The Lancet study in question:
Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies in a large nationwide sample of patients on dialysis in the USA: a cross-sectional study

The sampled population had similar age, sex, and race and ethnicity distribution to the US dialysis population, with a higher proportion of older people, men, and people living in majority Black and Hispanic neighbourhoods than in the US adult population.

Seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 was 8*0% (95% CI 7*7-8*4) in the sample, 8*3% (8*0-8*6) when standardised to the US dialysis population, and 9*3% (8*8-9*9) when standardised to the US adult population.

When standardised to the US dialysis population, seroprevalence ranged from 3*5% (3*1-3*9) in the west to 27*2% (25*9-28*5) in the northeast.

Comparing seroprevalent and case counts per 100 000 population, we found that 9*2% (8*7-9*8) of seropositive patients were diagnosed. When compared with other measures of SARS-CoV-2 spread, seroprevalence correlated best with deaths per 100 000 population (Spearman’s ρ=0*77).

Residents of non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic neighbourhoods experienced higher odds of seropositivity (odds ratio 3*9 [95% CI 3*4-4*6] and 2*3 [1*9-2*6], respectively) compared with residents of predominantly non-Hispanic white neighbourhoods.

Residents of neighbourhoods in the highest population density quintile experienced increased odds of seropositivity (10*3 [8*7-12*2]) compared with residents of the lowest density quintile.

County mobility restrictions that reduced workplace visits by at least 5% in early March, 2020, were associated with lower odds of seropositivity in July, 2020 (0*4 [0*3-0*5]) when compared with a reduction of less than 5%.

Interpretation

During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, fewer than 10% of the US adult population formed antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, and fewer than 10% of those with antibodies were diagnosed. Public health efforts to limit SARS-CoV-2 spread need to especially target racial and ethnic minority and densely populated communities.

9.3% is higher than the early results from the studies in Los Angeles and up in the Bay area. OTOH, the Lancet study does indicate that rates are lower in the west.

He’s still the kind of smarmy guy who has to wait for all the adoring applause to end before he’ll continue to the next point in his monologue. Any other late-night host could have gotten through that in half the time.

Most searing line was about how all the non-voting women can name their babies conceived in rape “Jill Stein”.

Didn’t Maher’s attitude in 2016 encourage a lot of people not to vote? I always remember him as a both-sides-suck kind of guy. I’m glad he’s saying what he’s saying now, but…

The Nation calls Aunt Lydia an extremist — but not a true religious extremist, just your standard GOP RW extremist. However, one must consider the GOP is actually a religion that forces conformity on its members when it comes to any policies that help the poor, women, people of color, or the environment. We call Trumpism a cult, but the evil within the party predated Trump and embraced him.

vox.com

The Senate has long had a filibuster, and it was technically more powerful in the past than today. Until 1917, there was no procedure by which any number of senators could vote to end a filibuster. From 1917 to 1975, it took a two-thirds supermajority to close a filibuster. Even so, filibusters were rare in this period — with the gruesome exception of the Southern bloc of Dixiecrats who used them to block civil rights legislation. But as the Dixiecrats proved, it was relatively easy for a united group of senators to block any and all legislation, if they so chose. The rules gave them that power, and the minority party could’ve used it with abandon. The norms, and the diffuse nature of the parties themselves, kept them from routinely using it.

What’s changed the US Senate isn’t changes to the rules, and it’s not just McConnell. It’s been the sorting of the parties into ideologically and demographically distinct coalitions. And it’s this trend that McConnell has, depending on how you look at it, harnessed for his ends or embraced because of his weaknesses. Either way, he has wrenched the Senate away from its traditional role as an institution unto itself, governed by norms of restraint and civility, and midwifed its transformation into another forum for party combat. He has created a parliamentary environment in an institution where the rules were designed for comity and cooperation. The result has been gridlock, fury, and confusion.

A Brady Bunch movie showed how out of touch the family was by having Marcia drink Tab. Charlie Wilson’s War had a scene with an agent drinking it — again to place the film in the appropriate time. And in my favorite, War Games, Ally Sheedy was drinking Tab while she and Matthew Broderick were plotting to attack Seattle.

According to an article in Vanity Fair, the only two things Democrats can do about SCOTUS:

1) Control Messaging: this will abolish ACA, pre-existing conditions. Maybe women’s ability to control their bodies. Do Not get involved in debating adding justices or abolishing filibusters.

2) Delay.

There’s a link at that site that lets you know when the big ships are coming through. That’s a great time to watch. It also has links to other cams around the Duluth harbor.

edit: There seems to be some problems with the harbor background map at the link over the last couple days.

Revealed: pro-Trump activists plotted violence ahead of Portland rallies

Patriots Coalition members suggested political assassinations and said ‘laws will be broken, people will get hurt’, leaked chats show

Leaked chat logs show Portland-area pro-Trump activists planning and training for violence, sourcing arms and ammunition and even suggesting political assassinations ahead of a series of contentious rallies in the Oregon city, including one scheduled for this weekend.

The chats on the GroupMe app, shared with the Guardian by the antifascist group Eugene Antifa, show conversations between Oregon members of the Patriots Coalition growing more extreme as they discuss armed confrontations with leftwing Portland activists, and consume a steady diet of online disinformation about protests and wildfires. (emphasis added)

The antifa group obviously has a mole among the fascists. Superior intelligence, in every sense of the word, will defeat these terrorists.

The best part is that their contempt for opsec is inherent in their worldview: Operational security, as real “operators” understand it, is antithetical to that worldview and essentially defeats the whole purpose of their movement. The goober militia movement is all about display, posturing, and boasting. It is ultimately about compensation.

Several local supermarkets in northern suburbs of Chicago carry it. I picked up a 12-pack yesterday at the Woodman’s in Buffalo Grove (it vanished for awhile apparently due to the coronavirus but it appears to have returned). And drinking it reminded me of why it was my preferred beverage among diet colas.

I have a friend in southern Indiana who is a Tab fiend and has been in serious withdrawal for a couple of months since it vanished from the stores.

Since the last major revisions of Diet Coke and Diet Pepsi, I don’t have any strong preference. (Though the Diet Coke syrup/fountain blend seems a bit better?) DP is too damn sweet. Generics are just generic fizzy for when you’re in that mood. In northern IN I think I can find Tab in cans, but not 2-liters which is my preferred form-factor. (I don’t think I’ve seen Tab in anything but cans since 1985 or so.) Tab is great - I don’t think they still make it with saccharine, but that was the thing that separated it when everything else went aspartame.

I got a (very simple) K-cup brewer last Christmas, and a large amount of my caffiene intake has migrated to coffee because of it. One K-cup makes a first mug that is a little strong, then a second mug that is a little weak. Sometimes I sweeten, sometimes I don’t. It comes out at 25-30 cents per mug, which beats most cola anymore.

McDonalds branded K-cups are surprisingly good. Gevalia is very nice if slightly pricier. For cheap I’ll take almost any generic that’s labeled as a “breakfast blend” - got a box of 100 of those from Amazon last month which will hold me for a while.

I noticed that since the pandemic hit they’ve cut back on the choices of Coca Cola especially—Before the supermarkets had several versions of Diet Coke & Coke Zero—cherry, vanilla and even orange. The Diet Coke Cherry version was even in the 7.5 ounce cans. Now they just have Diet Coke or Coke Zero stocked everywhere.

Once in a while they stock Diet A&W Root Beer and A&W’s Diet Cream soda which is so heavenly!

Tab has a twofer: both saccharine and aspartame. TBH, the reason I quit Tab was my decision to avoid anything that contains aspartame, since I do not trust that ingredient at all. It would be nice if they would revert to their pre-aspartame formulation.

‘Close to 100% accuracy’: Helsinki airport uses sniffer dogs to detect Covid

Researchers running Helsinki pilot scheme say dogs can identify virus in seconds

“…If it indicates it has detected the virus - usually by yelping, pawing or lying down - the passenger is advised to take a free standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, using a nasal swab, to verify the dog’s verdict.

In the university’s preliminary tests, dogs - which have been successfully used to detect diseases such as cancer and diabetes - were able to identify the virus with nearly 100% accuracy, even days before before a patient developed symptoms.

Scientists are not yet sure what exactly it is that the dogs sniff when they detect the virus. A French study published in June concluded that there was “very high evidence” that the sweat odour of Covid-positive people was different to that of those who did not have the virus, and that dogs could detect that difference.

Dogs are also able to identify Covid-19 from a much smaller molecular sample than PCR tests, Helsinki airport said, needing only 10-100 molecules to detect the presence of the virus compared with the 18m needed by laboratory equipment.”

La Llorana is a ghost story; a woman who killed her children roams the earth lamenting their deaths (and grabbing other people’s kids, living kids, to try to replace hers). Unless you’re a fan of horror stories, you really don’t want to know.

Think Medea, in denial of what she’d done, grieving endlessly over the “unexplained” deaths of her children.
