If you’re not following Dr Sarah Taber on Twitter, you are *missing out*. She’s a crop scientist and former farmworker and some of her threads are amazing. This is about crop insurance fraud involving sweet potatoes from a few months back.

She returns to it in this thread from today:

She links to an article about tobacco crop insurance fraud in North Carolina in the ’00s, and by the end of the article, if your eyebrows are not grazing your hairline, you didn’t read it.
agweb.com

Also in today’s thread is a discussion about farm labor and migrant workers as well.

Seriously, as a friend of mine just said, “Taber is awesome, I’ve learned so much from her.” You will too.

Biden takes the oath and fires them. Career types serve as acting until Biden appointees are confirmed. Same as happened in 2017 and 2009, respectively.

Does anyone know if any of this is part of the job description or those norms/traditions Republicans are so fond to tossing to the side when it suits them?

I’m 2017, president-elect trump designated some future nominees (fairly common practice in modern times) and they actually had confirmation hearings before Inauguration Day. That process probably violates the spirit of Marbury v Madison (the idea that there’s one president at a time), but none were confirmed until after the inauguration

By custom, heads of Executive Departments (Cabinet) all submit their resignations to a (new) incoming Administration: but even if they don’t: said Cabinet members “serve at the pleasure of the President”, and can thus get canned at any time (though it’s rarely so blatant). And as KGxvi notes above, the relevant Deputy(/Assistant?) acts as Department Head until a replacement is confirmed.

So The Hon. Attorney General Mr. Piggy Barr doesn’t have much of a choice: though I’m not sure exactly how much power he is likely to have as a “lame duck” AG (I doubt whether he has much endeared himself to Justice careerists). But it’s probably that, being Mr. Piggy Bill Barr, he will try his best to do as much damage as possible on his way out.

Previously, Cabinet members would submit their resignations effective the same time the President’s term expires.

I don’t expect Trump’s assholes to adhere to that. Joe will have to fire them and they will run to Fox News and claim martyrdom…

A worry. Could Trump or Dejoy order a complete shutdown of postal service operations just before the election to ‘delay’ ballots so they can be discounted for being late. I imagine something like a 48 hour ‘temporary’ shutdown’ on Nov 1st, ‘to inspect for, collect, and preserve evidence of mail fraud’. It might even be conveniently done in crucial swing states, or even certain cities. Could a last minute directive like that be prevented or reversed?

Maybe this is just my late night, awake in bed, conspiracy theory, but it seemed then like something they might try.

A good article from Teri Kanefield’s blog explaining that democracy is hard work, and the reactionaries will always be pushing back against it. terikanefield-blog.com

Also, her latest article, “We Are In Danger Of Becoming The Puppets”.

This quote is something I DESPISE:

The “we have to prepare” argument goes like this: “We must uncover all of these far-fetched unlikely scenarios so that we can guard against them.”

I HATE THIS.

PREPARE FOR WHAT?

Or, more precisely,
PREPARE FOR HOW?

What are we supposed to do that we aren’t already doing? I can’t “vote harder”!

(Note on voting in Salem, Massachusetts: We have vote-by-mail, but we have dropboxes, and City Hall, and our usual polling stations. I have applied for my ballot and will early-vote.
I never needed to say this: We have odd-year municipal elections, which means that elections are routine. Yes, Brodude, local elections are important.)

If you’re going to scare people (and the “you” refers to pundits, not anyone here), and they can’t do any more than they are already, then it will be VERY ugly.

The “we have to prepare” argument goes like this: “We must uncover all of these far-fetched unlikely scenarios so that we can guard against them.”

We need to be prepared for Trump to pull some outrageous and unprecedented stunts. We have never had to deal with an incumbent President who is aware that he is going to face multiple indictments and charges as soon as he loses Presidential immunity. That makes him truly desperate and ready to stop at nothing in order not to lose.

We have never had to deal with a President who has a criminal organization backing him up along with foreign nations also acting in his interest with his active collusion.

And we have never really seen a media climate so enthralled with an entertainer and scandalmonger who is a disaster as a leader but a total sensation as a media sensation and reality TV star.

There is a good chance that he will manage to piss off even the GOP because he will be acting in his own personal interests, damn the GOP and all the other candidates it has fielded, and that could well be his ultimate undoing.

So much THIS.

If Trump’s value to the GOP establishment is transactional, he’s nearly out of valuable currency to offer in his first term.

Now that he’s given them the Barrett nomination, assuming he’s not re-elected, what else can he do for the party? He’ll have a few weeks to get some lame-duck judicial nominees crammed into lower courts (but Mark Kelly replacing McSally will stop that train after the end of November). They’ll try to do some lame-duck regulatory ratfucking, but the slow nature of those processes means it won’t really accomplish much (and can be reversed in the new year.)

The gravy train of ambassadorships is over. No more cushy White House jobs for his Fox News friends.

Coattails for down-ticket candidates? If he can’t pull Lindsey Graham over the line, he’s going to have the stench of loser all over him and only the crazies are going to want him out on the stage with them going forward.

What’s left? Pardons, and we’ll see those, certainly. But his power to issue those will end, too, and after that, what use is he to anyone? He’s done.

My son and I are sitting down tonight and filling out our ballots. Cleo and I will ride up to the library and drop the ballots off there. The race for Loeffler’s seat is insane. 20 fucking candidates. 7 Dems. 4 Independent. 1 libertarian. 1 green. The rest Republicans. Out of all those, only Collins, Loeffler and Raphael Warnock have run any ads at all. This sucks because unless one candidate gets 50 percent of the votes, then there’s another run off (I think, this whole thing is giving me a migraine).

Warnock is the best choice of the bunch and I am super annoyed the other Dems refuse to bow out gracefully especially that ass Matt Lieberman. Joe Effing Lieberman’s Effing son. This is such crap. The downfall will be more chaotic than we can even begin to imagine, because when you have an entire administration that’s filled from bottom to top with petty criminals out for their own gain and no concept of public service, it’s going to be a race for the lifeboats when the whole thing starts going down. Mnuchin is out only for Mnuchin, Chao only for Chao, Barr only for Barr, and each of the Trumps only for themselves.

On the one hand, it will be ugly and raw and vicious - but on the other hand, I expect a LOT of the crap that we’ve only speculated on behind the scenes will get blown into the open, and nobody with an R after their name is going to walk away from this cleanly.

And I’m OK with that. :)

From Trump’s own tax returns:
1. He is essentially broke.
2. If he is not really broke, he has repeatedly lied to the IRS - a felony.
4. He repeatedly violates the emoluments clause and monetizes presidency.
3. He financially can’t afford to lose the WH.

Lindsey begging for money again on FOX.

During an interview on the Sunday Morning Futures program, Graham blamed his financial woes on the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court.

“Democrats try to destroy Judge Barrett at their own peril,” Graham said. “Their base is going nuts. They’ve raised $300 million, ActBlue has, since the passing of Justice Ginsburg.”

“I’m being out-raised 2-to-1,” he continued. “Every Republican running in the Senate is being hit hard with all this money coming in from ActBlue. So if you want to help me, LindseyGraham(dot)com. Five or ten bucks goes a long way.”

Graham returned to the subject several moments later.

“I know the amount of money coming in since the death of Justice Ginsburg tells me there’s a lot of energy out there to take out Judge Barrett,” he said. “Help me and others — LindseyGraham(dot)com — I hate to keep saying that but just the money is overwhelming.” C&L

Won’t Lindsey lose his incentive to work if you give him money. Boot straps Lindsey, boot straps.

To me, the nut grafs from the NYT’s Trump-finances piece are this:

Together with related financial documents and legal filings, the records offer the most detailed look yet inside the president’s business empire. They reveal the hollowness, but also the wizardry, behind the self-made-billionaire image — honed through his star turn on “The Apprentice” — that helped propel him to the White House and that still undergirds the loyalty of many in his base.

Ultimately, Mr. Trump has been more successful playing a business mogul than being one in real life.

“The Apprentice,” along with the licensing and endorsement deals that flowed from his expanding celebrity, brought Mr. Trump a total of $427.4 million, The Times’s analysis of the records found. He invested much of that in a collection of businesses, mostly golf courses, that in the years since have steadily devoured cash — much as the money he secretly received from his father financed a spree of quixotic overspending that led to his collapse in the early 1990s.

And none of this is really “news” - Trump’s shaky finances, ludicrous tax-juggling and vaporware “empire” have been out in the press for decades: and yet 46.1% of the voters still thought this dishonest charlatan was fit to occupy the White House…..

What happened to our joy is that we once again became a country defined by who we are supposed to hate and who we are supposed to take pleasure in kicking down. The people who are held up as the face of our country are not happy unless they are violently denigrating or suppressing folks who they have decided are not only not really ‘American’ but not really Human in their eyes. That’s what happened. There’s no joy in doing things for personal enrichment because our happiness has become defined by who we make miserable instead.

Just how many people* (lawyers, accountants, clerks, etc.) has Trump had to hire for how long and for how much money in order to keep these tax scams going?
I’m sure he has always written off the costs of the hires as “business expenses”, I’d just be curious to know what percentage of operating expenses he has had to allocate to “tax avoidance”…?

Or he could just order the ballots don’t get postmarks.

“I’m glad I was able to skip out on taxes by having my company pay a consulting fee to my daughter, even though she was working at that company, just like Trump. Did you take advantage of that tax fraud scheme? Why not?”

What should be obvious to people by now, but especially after today, is that Vlad never needed a “pee tape” to control Trump. All he needed to do is regularly remind him that he or his fellow oligarchs possessed the ability to call in Donny’s debts any time they chose.
