My dad used to take my mom for rides in the car to help calm her dementia-related anxieties. The rides eventually stopped working, which contributed to my dad’s decision to put my mom in a nursing home.

Sometimes we have to take them for a ride to calm their agitation too.

Not if they have COVID-19. You’re not even allowed to be in the room with them.

Shit doesn’t exist until it effects them directly.

When it does effect them directly, they still don’t learn that other people suffer the same way; they just learn that they want to avoid more pain.

I mean, the whole superspreader event was inevitable because these people decided to just keep playing Russian Roulette…and now there’s been a “bang” and a bunch of them will think that the gun going off wasn’t inevitable, but a “mistake” or made to happen…because it is impossible that the game they chose to play could result in a negative outcome for them.

Yes: Joe (and everyone around him) needs to do daily testing - for everybody: at least everyone in the Biden campaign (from the candidate on down) seem to be taking the CV very seriously, and ignoring the mockery from the Oppo. With the level of protection they seem to follow, the odds on anyone contracting the virus are probably quite low (but not 0 - gotta be careful until a safe vaccine is out).

Oh, and fuck Trump (as if it needs to be repeated) - as Mrs. Jay and I were discussing over dinner: “Fuck Trump” - if he’s really that sick, it’s insanely irresponsible to go out: and if he’s not: why are the taxpayers paying for Covid Theater - just so King Orangeanus can look like some sort of “hero” to the goobers?

re: #20 lawhawk

Trumps say explicitly what his followers…and a lot of reactionary Americans…believe implicitly:

There is a hierarchy of kinds of people that is a priori true and moral.
They are rightfully the high-tier individuals in that hierarchy.
People that work for them, or whose jobs involve service, are their inferiors within that hierarchy.
It is right and good that inferiors are subject to the unconditional demands of their superiors.
It is right and good that inferiors are not treated as equals by their superiors.
It is right and good that superiors feel anger and deliver punishment to individuals that suggest the above axioms are false.

For someone with power to not use that power…to be a superior that does not demand inferiors suffer…is a disruption of the order of the world. While the hierarchy means that the superior kind can be excused many kinds of use of power that cause harm, the one unforgivable crime is to treat inferiors as having unconditional value, as ends rather than means.

Mrs. Fish and I went to one restaurant when they first reopened. At first it was kinda cool, place was almost completely empty, couples were placed at widely separated tables. Then the dinner crowd showed up, and I got reeeeally nervous at the amount of people pouring in, some without masks. We hurriedly NOPED the fuck out of there, and haven’t sat down at another restaurant since.

Honestly I can’t even remember the last time I ate inside at a restaurant… or even on a patio of a restaurant. It was way before COVID was a thing. Probably over a year ago.

I’m “honestly” confused by how many people are freaking out about not being able to certain things to the point of risking their life. As long as I have income of some kind (or a way to not become homeless), I could literally sit in my house eating home cooked meals, watching streaming movies and playing video games until sometime in 2022 when COVID is official announced “defeated” (or something… I know it might never go away fully). I “miss” going out and doing some things, but not to the point of risking my life or the lives of people around me. Fuck that..

I find my ability to tolerate assholes has dramatically decreased. Not that I was very tolerant to begin with (when dealing with assholes), but discovering how many of my fellow citizens are assholes has reduced my tolerance.

Made the necessary trip to a grocery store recently. Had a woman walk by with no mask and singing loudly. Infuriated me that she was so happy about putting others at risk, or just too stupid to understand. (The store did have a mandatory mask policy). Had a similar experience at the hardware store to get a necessary part. Maskless asshole strutting around, just waiting for someone to challenge him.

So would I put myself in a situation where I know there will be assholes that will flaunt health regulations, potentially put me at risk and piss me off at the same time? No way.

My wife and I have been to two restaurants in the past three weeks. Both in NYC, both outdoors. And both had limited seating with plexiglass screens between each table. One in Brooklyn was set up on the sidewalk, and a really good Argentinian spot that we went to yesterday in Alphabet City actually had a wooden platform built in the parking lane in front of the restaurant. It reminded me of when we went to Montreal a few years ago and most of the restaurants had similar setups in the street. It also had the plexi barriers between tables.

It was great to actually have a restaurant meal, but there’s no way we’re going into an indoor spot to eat until we’ve got a handle on this virus.

Fuck to the no.

There are several places around where I live with good outdoor seating — “good” means tables far enough apart for social distancing — and I’ve eaten at them a few times. (I bring my own utensils.)

But we have about five new cases a day in my town, and positive tests are around 2%.

(I also got a pedicure earlier this week, now that they’ve let the salons reopen. I don’t feel secure enough for a manicure, but my feet are sufficiently distant from my nose and mouth. There were two people in the salon, both masked employees. Also, I’ve been going there for years, so I’m willing to take a slight — very slight, I think — risk in the interest of their financial survival.)

My wife and I continued to go to restaurants as normal in March and April. (The fist case did not arrive here until April 1, and numbers were less than ten total through the end of the month).

Since then, we have only eaten out a couple times here at restaurants with outdoor dining areas, and in a couple on our trip to Valentine (during off hours when we were the only people there). For our overnight trip to Denver we took ready-cook food from home.

We don’t have the benefit of take-out restaurants or curbside grocery pickup or other such city amenities.

After watching that, I have to agree. I mean, many actors struggle to convincingly deliver a single character performance in a series or movie. This woman delivered, on cue, a haughty British orchestra snob; an American lady of the South; a young child; and Jesse Fucking Owens.

Last time I was in a restaurant was probably over a year ago. The husband goes out and meets a group of old work buddies about once a month, they eat at a local bbq place and hang out outside. We get take out or delivery about once a month, usually when I am having a bad day and am just over it.

You could not pay me to do more than any of that and I feel like that is pushing it.

And if I lived where you do, I’d probably feel the same way. But we have blue-state manners here, thank heavens.

I think I had to go inside one restaurant to pick up my takeout order. Otherwise, it’s all been places that do curbside or drive-through. We do it pretty frequently - at least once a week, as Mrs. Fish and I have a standing “drive-through date day” where we get takeout from a nearby restaurant or bar, as our way of trying to support the local businesses.

A Cranky One  Oct 4, 2020 • 6:10:14pm

While I’m not in any way willing to risk my health by going into a restaurant, we have used takeout from a few of the local restaurants to support their business and well, because the food is excellent.

There are a ton of Mexican restaurants in our area, but our favorite is a little family owned place just a few blocks away. We’re more than happy to do takeout from them regularly, since the kitchen area is visible and always very clean and the food is excellent. (We’ve noticed that it’s a favorite of the area cops as well. With literally dozens of Mexican food places to choose from, that suggests they know where to find the best food).

And while we’re happy to support their business, no way I would go in and dine. Or anywhere else for that matter. I do feel sympathy for the servers and bartenders that are out of work, but the blame for that is on the mis-administration.

My favorite pizza/hoagie place has a great setup for ordering and paying online for curbside pickup, and the person who brings your food out always has a mask and gloves. The local Chinese place doesn’t have curbside but they’re very concerned about safety, although it can be a little tricky distancing from other customers when picking up. I usually wait outside until it’s clear.

Most of the restaurants around here have tables across the entry doors — you go there to give them your order, or get the order you’re already phoned in. The few that don’t do it that way don’t worry me, since there’s nobody there but the person at the counter who takes the order. The cooks are back in the kitchen. Once in a while there might be another customer.

I have dined outside several times with one other person, and have been willing to go inside to order and to pick up phone orders. But I am not willing to eat inside. Once it’s late October, it will likely be too cold to continue with outdoor dining here. Indoor dining does not seem safe.

It won’t be until Biden (G-d willing!) takes over in January that there will be a chance to get additional aid to businesses and local governments. Let’s hope we can survive until then.

When I said curbside I meant waiting outside for someone to deliver the food to my car, not sitting at a table on the sidewalk. I’ve only dined outside twice on a restaurant patio and I was nervously watching every move anyone made the whole time. It wasn’t relaxing so I stopped doing it.

re: #73 A hollow voice says, Beware the strongman con

Northern NJ has a ton of restaurants with outdoor seating. Some appear to do better job of social distancing/masking than others.

I just don’t trust people; they’re eating. They can get/give covid19 while eating, even outdoors. It just isn’t enjoyable worrying about getting covid for the pleasure of just eating out.

And I say that even as I’m planning a quick getaway where I will stay overnight at a hotel and have to do delivery or eat outdoors away from other people.

I have my risk threshold, and I see lots of people with a different one.

As it is right now, even when I’m at the grocery store. I wont stand anywhere for longer than I have to. If I have questions about the shopping list, I’ll text my GF and then take laps around the store in the wider more open areas until she replies so that I avoid standing in one place for too long. If the lines at the register are too long I’ll do the same thing until I hear a “threes a crowd” call over the PA or I notice it let up. I only go to the stores where the gap between the store aisles and the registers is large enough to have 3-4 people socially distanced in line after whoever is checking out.

I use a cloth mask with 4 layers of blue shop towels in it. This doesn’t make it “N95” but at two layers it makes it at least 6-7 times better at stopping particulates than just cloth alone and I’m doubling that. It’s harder to breathe or talk in it that way but it only seems to lower my SpO2 by 1% or less. I’m less worried about getting it from touching things but I still use hand sanitizer, bring sanitizer wipes to wipe down the cart even if they claim them to be “clean” and wash thoroughly as soon as I get home.

Most mask orders state that you wear the mask in the restaurant, unless you are eating at the table. So you would take the mask off, eat your meal, and put it back on.

The biggest thing is outside dining with lots of ventilation (fans).

What they don’t tell you is there’s a version of that room built so that the president continues to lie down. The floor looks like the back wall, and they have table prop that is perpendicular.

Went out for a 2 hour walk today with the KN95 mask on because the AQI was still around 150. Deliberately looked for a single Trump lawn sign or bumper sticker in my part of Los Angeles.

Result—None BUT there were PLENTY of Biden landslides and lots of Joe Bumper Stickers!

re: #162 Eric The Fruit Bat

Shutting down WWV, WWVH and WWVB would effectively end the life and sales of devices that automatically set their time from their transmission, and deprive scientists of information that is not dependent on having some kind of internet connection.

Typical knee-jerk reaction from Hair Furor…

It would also foul up calibration of any sort of equipment requiring calibration standards, as calibration standards are calibrated to WWV et alia.

WWV and such are transmitted over the telephone (you can call them up to listen for two minutes), but the signal delays and such introduced by telephone lines or cell service make those signals useless for calibrating anything.

Why WWV and WWVH Still Matter (goes to Radio World, July 1, 2020)

By the way, WWV’s 20 MHz signal was used to conduct an experiment to prove radio waves scatter off satellites, and to estimate how they break up as they enter the atmosphere, when Sputnik 1 reëntered the atmosphere. Reception of the meteor scatter off the satellite as it plunged showed how it broke up.

Last year was one of both celebration and uncertainty for WWV, the station adjacent to Fort Collins, Colo., that transmits automated time broadcasts on the shortwave bands.

On the plus side, it marked the 100th year of WWV’s call letters, making the site, operated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, one of the world’s oldest continually operating radio stations.

On the negative side, WWV and its sister time station WWVH in Hawaii nearly missed this centennial. That’s because NIST’s original 2019 budget called for shutting down the pair, along with WWVB, the longwave code station co-located next to WWV, as a cost-saving move.

Fortunately, these cuts never happened, and WWV, WWVH and WWVB seem likely to keep broadcasting the most accurate time from NIST’s atomic clocks, at least for the immediate future. (No further cuts have been threatened.)

WWV and its sister stations could also have relevance now for another reason.

“The internet has become infamous as a purveyor of false information and counterfeit sites,” said Kim Andrew Elliott. “This is true even during emergencies, including the coronavirus outbreak.

“WWV and WWVH can be useful transmitters of emergency information: They are much more difficult to spoof than a website,” he told RW. “If a fake station tries to transmit on WWV/WWVH frequencies, co-channel with WWV and WWVH, the listener will hear immediately that something is not right. If the fake station comes from overseas, it will usually sound distant, compared to the signal we are used to hearing in North America.”

Remember the memo some months ago the DOJ put out saying wilfully spreading this disease could be prosecuted as terrorism (provided you’re not a Republican of course)?

People intentionally spreading coronavirus could be charged with terrorism, DOJ says (CNN, March 25)

If we don’t hold genocide trials, perhaps we can do this after Barr is out of the DOJ.
