A Far Right Plot to Kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Has Been Thwarted

US News • Views: 36,938

Today we learn that the FBI has broken up a domestic terrorist plot to overthrow the Michigan state government and kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Their motivation for this plot can be traced directly back to the president of the US, who was angry with Whitmer over her attempt to stop the spread of coronavirus, and in April tweeted this:

Trump went much further than this, though, repeatedly tweeting hatred directly targeted at Gov. Whitmer — and today I discovered that he’s deleting those tweets. Here’s a screenshot of one of them, posted March 27:

[ See correction below… ]

The FBI revealed Thursday that it thwarted a plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, unsealing charges against six people who it said contemplated a violent overthrow of the government and conducted firearms training, tested explosives and tactical drills.

The plotters, according to an FBI affidavit, seemed to be motivated by their belief that state governments, including Michigan’s, were violating the Constitution. One of those involved complained in June that Whitmer (D) was controlling the opening of gyms — an apparent reference to coronavirus shut down restrictions. But unbeknown to them, the FBI had confidential informants recording many of their discussions, according to the affidavit.

On the one hand, if this was a real threat, I’m glad they caught the bastards. Also, this seems like the sort of thing that if it happened would have actually started a civil war, so, again, good that they caught the bastards. On the other hand…

Law enforcement has a history of creating these “monsters” themselves, so, yeah…

My husband used to work at a luxury apt complex next door to that hotel/venue, while it was under construction. It’s for rich people, you or I could never afford to live in the apartments, stay in the hotel or have a party there. The hotel company forced the apartment company to make space for their guests in their parking garage, threatened legal action etc. The event planning company also has other properties that aren’t Biltmore hotels, its a big company. That was no tiny wedding, 11 bridemaids and 8 groomsmen. Great, just what Atlanta needs, more walking disease vectors and workers getting sick.

Just six of them and they still couldn’t maintain operational security. Imagine trying to organize 30 or 40 of these milk duds, let alone several hundred, into some kind of RW putsch. They would require serious cooperation from law enforcement for that and even then, someone on the LE end would give it away.

I’m fond of the idea of Trump spending long and miserable years in prison, broke and debilitated from covid19 aftereffects, dying while still imprisoned and then getting buried in an unmarked ditch somewhere because nobody else cares enough to get him a headstone.

Here’s a particularly ugly case of history at least rhyming.

Hitler’s treason case after the failure of his beer hall putsch was dealt with by a right wing Weimar court that went very easy on Hitler. Trump is obviously trying to pack the judiciary (especially SCOTUS) with fellow travelers in case he needs the same kind of ‘protection’ by courts.

Sure, long-term. But the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch was a debacle for Hitler and the Nazis; Hitler ran away with a dislocated shoulder, Göring was shot in the leg and developed a lifelong morphine addiction, Himmler…hell I don’t know what Himmler did and a bunch of Nazis lay dead in the street.

Only the courts saved Hitler’s useless ass, allowing him enough leisure time to dictate what would become Mein Kampf. Had the judges not been sympathetic to Hitler and instead sentenced him to some real hard time and then promptly deported him back to Austria, the world would be quite a different place.

Not that different. The WR was ripe for a far right fascist rising and if the Nazi’s had failed, then some other group would have risen and possibly with competent leadership. Imagine, if you will, a far right government coming to power in the mid 30’s with Reinhard Heydrich as chancellor?

Trump’s COS Meadows’ daughter had a wedding in the middle of the pandemic in Georgia.

Even at that time, Georgia’s idiot governor Kemp limited indoor events to 10 people or less.

There’s more than that in the wedding party (click through to the photo spread):

While millions were losing their jobs and struggling to deal with massive outbreaks and shutdowns, Meadows was partying it up.

I know people who cancelled their weddings, bar/bat mitzvahs and other events because of the pandemic. Meadows didn’t care.

The part about killing cops was a bridge too far for one of them. There is a total of 13 people being charged. Some are in another part of MI and likely being rounded up now.

One thing was interesting, the terrorists were listening to a police scanner and heard the cops were surrounding them or on the way. The informant excused himself and got the hell out of there before anyone could stop him. I think this is legit, they didn’t need to be coerced or led to doing what they wanted to do. The idea was to create a diversion by an explosion, kidnap the governor in the chaos and then put her on trial in their own clown court. Most likely the last stage was execution for treason. They got triggered initially because, among other things, their gym was shut down because of COVID, which is so fucking UNmanly and pathetic I can’t even.

Electoral whack-a-mole. I mean, I suppose he could be doing that because his internal, unskewed polls have him leading in those states, but that really reads like someone that is just trying to keep the score close. There is no path for him without the Rust Belt and the upper Midwest.

The upper midwest should have been conceded two months ago. But he can not win without Ohio. No path at all.

Two of my cousins had to cancel their weddings. We usually do a few group family gatherings a year especially when my cousin visits from the UK but that couldn’t happen this year either.

Yesterday when the information was trickling out it seems that everyone concluded that Trump was conceding those states. But the odd thing is Trump is farther behind in places like Florida than say Iowa (which Trump has a decent chance of winning) or Wisconsin or Ohio (both also possible wins for Trump.)

Florida and NC would seem to be farther away for Trump than those states.

It almost reads like the idea is to try to keep the score close in as many states as possible, so that when he starts challenging election results, he has a greater possibility of hitting on a few of them and stealing the election.

He was already impeached, though it went out with a whimper and not a bang. I see a bunch of “we need to come together” horseshit so nobody is going to do the heavy lifting required to indict 30+ people.

I’m fine with the idea, but that’s a lot of resources and negativity to devote to a bunch of assholes while Biden would be sniped at daily for causing the country to fragment even further.

OTOH, a lot of people need jobs. It could create a lot of jobs.

i’m not arguing, just observing
if biden is smart he distances himself from the doj and his AG - appearances matter
they could go the special counsel / investigation route for more distance
the impeachment was (basically) over one issue - there are scads more
the fix was in (R senate)
a lot of those ‘scads’ might be easier to prove in court than to an adversarial senate jury
these people spent four years fundamentally breaking so many things, and pointing out so many holes in the system, that to basically ‘move past it’ with so many actual people hurt or affected seems somehow not likely

i guess we’ll see

First thing I thought of was:

Abstract

In this paper, a novel double MPEG-4 compression detection method is proposed based on block artifact measurement. According to the properties of recompressed frames, an adaptive post-filtering technique is used to measure the strength of block artifacts in decompression domain. Then, the measurement of block artifacts is combined with the Variation of Prediction Footprint (VPF) using an adjustive parameter for each frame. This combination aims to enhance the robustness of the measurement sequence against degradations caused by lossy recompression. Finally, a temporal periodic analysis method is applied to the measurement sequence to detect double compression and estimate the size of the original Group of Pictures (GOP).

So, today’s my birthday. Four years ago to this day, my partner and I were visiting San Francisco for the first time as part of the festivities. Visited Alcatraz and saw the Blue Angels on the ferry ride back from the island. Great place, can’t wait to go again if we get back to “normal”.

Anyways, part of what I thought really added some oomph to the day was the fact the night before, the Access Hollywood tape broke. I thought that was it. Motherfucker is toast. No one in American politics, particularly an alleged Republican, gets caught cheating on their wife with a porn star and comes out unscathed.

Holy shit, was I wrong.

That’s why when Trump announced he had Covid, my gut reaction was “Eh, he’ll somehow beat it. Won’t matter in the long run.” He may come out less healthy than he was before (which, Jesus Christ, that’s a low bar), but in about two weeks, this’ll be a plus. You’re already starting to see that.

We plan on early voting and I’m not throwing in the towel or anything like. I’m just stunned that this guy can:

• facilitate the spread of the worst pandemic in 102 years,
• get people killed while doing that
• catch the damn thing himself
• become the 21st Century equivalent of Typhoid Mary;

and still be in power and in the goddamn race.

Even if Biden wins and the Senate flips, I sometimes feel like we as a country are done. No other country in their right fucking minds should or will want to have anything to do with us. If Biden becomes President, watch how the idiot “independents” and folks like the Lincoln Project turn on him if he doesn’t magically fix everything in 8 months.

This last four years has been a helluva century. Christ.

So, how’s your day going, LOL?

Dunno if I’d attribute detailed knowledge of nuclear physics to Heydrich.

However, he would have appointed people to positions of power based upon how smart & efficient they were, rather than whether they sucked up like toadies (Goebbels) or were just sadistic & ruthless (Himmler, Borrman).

Smart, evil people can do only so much damage on their own. It’s when they’re joined by other smart, evil people that they really make a dent.

re: #132 Mattand

• become the 21st Century equivalent of Typhoid Mary;

and still be in power and in the goddamn race.

Christ.

So, how’s your day going, LOL?

first

then - 8 months is generous //(1/2)

finally - we are not done. there are too many of us who refuse to accept, believe and succumb to that. there is a way. multiple ways through. right now the paths are unclear. this will be a long slog.

re: #133 William Lewis

And he was smart enough to see where the scientists - especially Heisenberg- were intentionally going the wrong way with the program.

Wasn’t going to happen. It took the greatest industrial nation on Earth at the time with unlimited access[1] to electricity, materials, scientists, technicians, manufacturing and all the other resources to make two lashed-together nuclear bombs and a Rube-Goldberg test device in four years from a standing start. The Nazis didn’t have any of that to spare and they were hopelessly fragmented — the Third Reich’s Post Office had an atomic bomb program, for example.

As for Heisenberg and co. they were treating the project to build a bomb as an academic research opportunity rather than an industrial operation, they knew they didn’t have the resources to complete it to make dozens of weapons — much of the world’s uranium at that time came from Canada, for example. The Tennessee Valley Authority’s generating capacity outmatched anything the Nazis could provide to supplu the necessary power-hungry isotope separation facilities. The Oak Ridge U-235 production plant was the biggest single building in the world, built from scratch during the war and, unlike German research and production facilities immune to attack.

There’s a radio program from the BBC, a dramatised account of the reactions by Heisenberg and co. to the news of the Hiroshima bombing secretly recorded by their Allied captors at Farm Hall in the British countryside at the end of the war. They were astonished that a bomb could have been developed in such a short time, they themselves thought they were ten years from being able to create such a weapon.

[1] An American company that made war-material items was puzzled why their highest-priority customer for carbon blocks was the University of Chicago rather than electric motor and truck starter manufacturers. They were told not to ask questions, just prioritise deliveries.

Take all your fries, put them in the brown paper bag, puff it up and shake them. Just the fries.
Like more salt? Add it.
Watch the grease come to the surface of the bag.
Turn the bag, shake every way.
Then lay it down and rip it so the bag is the plate.
Try it.

Not that different. The WR was ripe for a far right fascist rising and if the Nazi’s had failed, then some other group would have risen and possibly with competent leadership. Imagine, if you will, a far right government coming to power in the mid 30’s with Reinhard Heydrich as chancellor?

I’d rather not.

Trump’ s “understanding” of the 25th Amendment - or any other part of the Constitution- is probably on a par with his claim that he somehow “deserves” a few extra years in office because of the “crimes” committed against him in the 2016 campaign….

The president, who repeatedly insists that we respect the office of the presidency, must first do so himself. When he speaks, he speaks in our name — whether we agree with him or not. masks are medical equipment
actually, life support equipment:
they protect you from the environment you’re in (and the people in it)

they have the additional benefit of protecting the environment you’re in (and the people in it) from you

an unadorned plain mask is not a political statement
or a sign of weakness

it is not a stigma or a value judgement

re: #332 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

I’ve long felt the bullshit sold as reality TV drama is very harmful. That’s not something to emulate yet everyone wants to be the next Kardashians, which I understand because cha-ching. It’s not reality. It’s made up drama. And it’s absolutely nothing to aspire to.

I saw this T-shirt at work the other day.
