In a rambling call to Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business channel and again in a campaign video on Twitter, President Trump touted the experimental drugs that “cured” him of Covid-19 and threw the next debate into question by refusing to appear virtually. #Colbert #BetterKnowABallot #Monologue

So, uhm, no comment on *Pelosi* introducing legislation to set up a 25th Amendment commission to assess Trump’s fitness for office from anyone? From my casual ex-lawyer perspective, I’m thinking this is a constitutional non-starter but maybe there’s an explanation for this. And Pelosi has been criticized in the past for holding her punches against Trump so this is very surprising.

What I want to know is—what changed? Or, better yet, what’s going on to get Nancy Pelosi to do something that seems so very out of character for her? Does she know something we don’t? Or has she completely run out of fucks to give?

Morning Joe had the Green party presidential candidate on the show this morning offering to take Trump’s place in the upcoming debate. Almost every question the show asked him was “Don’t you think this election is too important to fuck up?” He was pretty oblivious as he basked in his 5 minutes of fame.

It could be both but with Biden up by so much why tinker?

For me it *feels* like she knows something. Either they are thinking about it, discussing it in what is left of his cabinet or Pence is sick or something.

If Pence is sick then everyone will want to know what happens *if*.

Otherwise, what is her endgame? We may never know.

I think there was a good discussion of this in the last thread, but the process in the 25th amendment does allow for a congress-appointed panel to act in place of the cabinet. There is no such panel to date, so Pelosi is talking about setting one up.

Without Pence buy-in it’s moot, but it’s good Trump-baiting. Which I think is her goal, to get him even more frothy at this moment when he doesn’t look very stable already. It won’t get him 25th’d, but it will bleed a point or two more support.

yeah, we only seem to see Green Party candidates in presidential races. That leads me to believe that a)it’s a money making scam for certain people. And b) it’s to stir up divisions in the Dem party and syphon off votes. It seems to work every time, but at least it’s a bit less effective this go round.

My guess is that this is both telling the electorate what the 25th amendment is (which is probably news to 80%+ of non-political types), and making it clear that the asshole can be removed from power, but Republicans don’t want to do it. They’d rather leave a stoned seriously ill lunatic in charge of the country rather than cross his equally insane and increasingly violent racist base.

Why?
He’s not going to go quietly in any case.
OK: To clarify a bit:
Even with a Bide “blue tsunami”, Trump is far more likely (IMHO) to spend the post-election week (or two) insanely raving/tweeting about “RIGGED!!” and “FRAUD!!!” and “COUP!!! - and frantically shepherding GOP efforts to “challenge” election results wherever they can (and hysterically tweeting in support of said efforts). And when the final totals get announced - totals that will probably make Herbert Hoover’s look good - he’ll probably do one of two things:
1. Resign/retreat to the bunker/flee the country/try to slink away unnoticed.
2. Hold out to the last minute breathing fire against his “enemies”, then revert to Option 1.

In any case, I would not be surprised to see a policy of utter non-cooperation with the incoming Admin’s transition team: and leaving them a huge pile of incinerated documents to clean up out of the Oval Office fireplace (or the rug)….

Section 4 of the 25th Amendment gives Congress the power to appoint somebody other than the VP and cabinet to make the determination. So, constitutionally, it’s doable. But, given Trump’s mental state these days, you’re probably going to need to override a veto on this.

As anti-police brutality protests continue, armed men without badges or uniforms sow fear

Late Wednesday night, five vehicles full of white men in tactical gear carrying large guns pulled up in front of Matthew Procknow’s home near the border between Milwaukee and Wauwatosa.

Protesters had marched down nearby North Avenue earlier in the evening, and Milwaukee police later said a nearby home in the 3300 block of North 92nd Street was damaged when someone threw a brick through a window.

Hundreds of people had been protesting for hours, in the wake of Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm’s announcement that he would not file criminal charges against Wauwatosa Police Officer Joseph Mensah in the fatal shooting of Alvin Cole….

Procknow approached a small, tan SUV with four men inside. All wore full body armor and helmets and carried AR-15 semi-automatic rifles….

In an interview with the Journal Sentinel, Procknow recalled a disconcerting interaction with the group that stopped in front of his house.

“I said, ‘Excuse me, can I help you?’” Procknow recalled.

A man rolled down a back window of the SUV and told him: “I’m with the police. Don’t worry. I’m here to protect you.”

The men wore no badges, he said. The caravan, which included a black pickup truck and a minivan with taped-up windows, didn’t look like undercover police vehicles to him, so he asked to see some identification.

The man got out of the car with his gun and threatened to arrest Procknow for obstruction. He reached down to his utility belt and Procknow heard a metallic clang — he thinks it was a set of handcuffs hitting the ground, but he was too rattled to look closely.

I just came back from looking at a senior townhouse that’s about 4 blocks from where I live now. I made it to the top of the waiting list. It’s one of the units that’s been adapted for wheelchair users so all of the kitchen cabinets and sinks are two inches lower, and it has a walk/roll in shower. I’m 6’ tall so the kitchen was problematic, and the rooms are smaller than I remembered from seeing a regular unit last summer (two bedrooms - approx. 850sf). About 7-8 residents were holding a painting class out in the back yard of the complex. They were all gathered around a folding table and at least one of them wasn’t wearing a mask. A couple of them were wearing gloves in addition to their masks.

Another issue: I’ve pretty well decided that I don’t want to give up my house and become a renter before I know that Trump is officially gone. My house payments are going to be less at the mercy of the royally fucked up economy we’ll have if Trump seizes a second term. I almost cancelled the visit today just because of this reason.

of a similar mindset, they helped build the beast, seems only fair that they are used as a tool to bring it down.

While I would applaud if Dems used the same tactics, I also fully understand that the media world we live in will not reward such behavior… to note, Lester Holt pinging Joe Biden on his lack of civility post the 1st Presidential debate.

Lester asks it of Biden because he knows that Biden will give him a heartfelt and reflective response… and I can even in fact understand it if you believe and its ingrained in you that Dems MUST always go high, must always have agency, must always be inclusive, yet the converse is NEVER true and who do the networks trot out week after week on the Sunday news shows? Why are GOP debate preppers allowed on the evaluation panel post the debate? Why must every moderator come from their ranks?

While the nevertrumpers help is welcome in this instance, for me its a case of you helped to create this, the least you can do is to help us kill it. As to how they behave post mortem is obviously open for debate, I would love to see Dem candidates push back on this de facto GOP framing for every damn issue.

They should leave the recommendations off. Algorithmic recommendations are one of the main reasons why social media has been so destructive; they help spread conspiracy theories and extremism way beyond their normal reach.

I can see an argument for very, very serious criminal charges possible in many countries when social media recommends following or joining groups that can be designated terrorist organizations. I mean, what the fuck do you think should happen if you hook someone up with the equivalent of Al Qaeda? You should be looking at terrorism charges yourself.

To the shock of absolutely no one:

Marjorie Taylor Greene, the rightwing conspiracy theorist and noted bigot who is all but assured to win her race for Congress in Georgia, has been described as a “Donald Trump in heels.” And according to a New Yorker profile of the future member of Congress and her race, that comparison between Greene and Trump is even more apt than we thought—Greene, who enjoys talking up her strong belief in traditional family values, allegedly has quite a history of extramarital affairs.

Greene often describes herself as a wife, a mother, and a Christian and as someone who will bring those values to D.C. But according to Jim Chambers, the former owner of the CrossFit gym that Greene later took over, it seems part of Greene’s family values is sleeping with men who are not her husband.

For what it’s worth, I don’t necessarily care that Trump cussed on the radio - I think the 7 words you can’t say on tv/radio is stupid anyway. I don’t even really care that “the president cussed on the radio” because again, stupid.

The bigger problem is what he was actually talking about - escalating conflicts with Iran. The even bigger problem is that even before he was getting meds for covid, he was unstable and reckless.

yeah, we only seem to see Green Party candidates in presidential races. That leads me to believe that a)it’s a money making scam for certain people. And b) it’s to stir up divisions in the Dem party and syphon off votes. It seems to work every time, but at least it’s a bit less effective this go round.

It’s almost always a celebrity or stunt candidate, often someone who has a grand total of zero Environmental issues in their campaign rhetoric.

Remember I said I knew at least 4 close friends who I figured would vote for Howie as soon as it was pretty clear Trump would lose in a landslide and because it’s California, and because they don’t fucking learn anything ever…

also with 3 weeks to go, it’s probably too late to start protecting the congress (you mean senate)

“A series of setbacks self-owns for by President Trump has left some Republican operatives and donors fearing that the race for the White House is slipping away and proposing that the party shift focus to protecting seats in Congress,” NBC News reports.

Said GOP consultant Brendan Buck: “We need to protect the Senate and limit the damage in the House. They can’t say it out loud, but the president is likely toast.

I agree with that. But it’s ok to point out his potty mouth, but not for days, you know they would do that on steroids (heh) if it was Biden on air doing that. As long as the point isn’t lost. My feeling is let him run his orange pie hole and mouth off as much as he can. The more unstable he looks, the more he’ll be his own one man voter suppression machine. There are some people that will vote for him no matter what, but I’m guessing there are more than a few who won’t vote at all because voting for a liberal is just a bridge too far, but they are disgusted by the other choice.

yeah, we only seem to see Green Party candidates in presidential races. That leads me to believe that a)it’s a money making scam for certain people. And b) it’s to stir up divisions in the Dem party and syphon off votes. It seems to work every time, but at least it’s a bit less effective this go round.

The Libertarians have been getting more votes than the Greens, lately. Gary Johnson tripled Stein’s vote total nationally in both 2016 and 2012. Johnson got over 4% in 19 states (over 9% in New Mexico, which Clinton won by about 8 points). In 2008, Bob Barr as the Libertarian nominee got .4% nationally, Nader got .56% and Cynthia McKinney got .12%.

It’s basically an open secret in politics that in close races the Dems will help Libertarians get on the ballot and Reps will help Greens do the same.

Part of me thinks we’d be better off with a multi-party system (via an expanded House) and potential coalition governments than the duopoly we currently have.

Several problems with that. It seems that while not designed to be a 2 party system, the structure of our government forces it to be.

All the current 3rd parties are jokes or crazy people that I don’t want having more say.

We already do “coalitions”, it’s just done before they get into the government, not after. The Republican party is at least 3 different parties working together. The Democratic party is, perhaps 4-6.

If we had a Euro-parliamentary type system and similar voting system, neither of the 2 big parties in the US would be nearly as big as they are, and they might not exist as such at all. I’m not willing right now, to start fucking with the structure of government to that level. Getting rid of gerrymandering, the Electoral College, Stolen SCOTUS seats, and Citizens United will fix 99% of our problems IMO.

I don’t think it works unless/until we do away with the electoral college. And expanding the size of the House would help with gerrymandering (more seats means smaller districts means more difficult to draw insane districts).

But even if we were a bit more like the UK where you have the two major parties, a fairly strong third party that can occasionally win nationally (or at least be the lead in a coalition government), and possibly a regional party like in Scotland… I think it might be better over all. Afterall, there really isn’t anything special about our system that requires only two major parties.

Perhaps my view is tainted by living in California where the D/R/I split is 46.4/24.2/23.7 yet in almost every election it ends up being either D vs R or D vs D.

I don’t know an answer to that. I would think the charges brought against people who knowingly spread STIs would be a legal starting point, but I don’t know how the courts/law would have to respond to a case like this. Throw it out? Let it proceed? It would open up cause for all the people who get sick or die from this, maybe? For all we know Dems could be looking at that as one of many options.

I don’t think Russia needs “dirt” on most of these people.

Oligarchs everywhere have common objectives: rake in cash, make people desperate enough to do more for less, never hear the word “no,” tell other people how to live.

The GOP, which is full of people who believe themselves a superior type that should be granted right to dictate the terms of everyone’s else life and be richly rewarded in the process, have a natural affinity for the crooks-but-also-prudes energy the Russia government is running on. Indeed, let’s be vulgar: the Republican ideal is a social conservative society that coincidentally creates a lot of vulnerable exiles available to be exploited…which is exactly what post-Soviet Russia has become.

Fox News anchor Chris Wallace put in as stark as terms possible that, in his esteem, President Trump made a “big mistake” in bowing out of the virtual second debate, Mediaite reports.

Said Wallace: “Where I think the president made a mistake is maybe a virtual debate isn’t an in-person debate, but it’s better than no debate. That’s what the president will get now.”

He added: “He is behind in the polls. He has two opportunities; it seems to me two big opportunities to flip the script, which were the two debates, and he gave one of them away.”

re: #258 Eclectic Cyborg

Will this be a real doctor or just an actor with a stethoscope?

You probably know better than to take Trump’s word—or the word of a carefully orchestrated media appearance on Fox News—that he’s doing just great. The evaluation will reportedly not even happen with a doctor who is with Trump in person. It can’t possibly involve much more than some questions! Marc Siegel, the medical doctor leading this stunt, knows better, too. Before he went on to become a Fox News contributor who downplays the pandemic, he once wrote for Slate on the very topic of how Trump’s health issues will probably be obscured.

There is no fucking job on earth worth dying over. None. Especially when you actually have the control to do SOMETHING about it. Those making smaller salaries and doing the day to day stuff to keep the White House physically functioning, I get why they stay and try to make the most of a shitty situation. But the rest of this herd of monsters? There’s no damned excuse for it. Don’t OSHA regulations have something to say about a knowingly unsafe workplace? Or is the fucking White House just immune to everything except fucking COVID-19?

OREO and PFLAG have released a limited edition rainbow cookie in celebration of LGBTQ+ History Month.
The cookies will not be sold in stores and will instead be given to fans to “reward acts of allyship for the LGBTQ+ community,” a spokesperson for OREO told CNN.
The cookies are part of OREO and PFLAG’s new Proud Parent platform, “a long-term campaign shining light on the importance of a supportive family in fostering greater LGBTQ+ acceptance.”

Most of the non-judicial damage will be in the ranks of the appointees. They mostly rotate out anyway. There is an ugly process called “tunneling in” by which appointees move into the empty slots in senior ranks of the civil service and remain until retirement.
