Psychedelic Friday Jam: The Flaming Lips: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert

Music • Views: 27,910

The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music’s Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It’s the same spirit — stripped-down sets, an intimate setting — just a different space.

Bob Boilen | October 9, 2020
Wayne Coyne has appeared inside a bubble for over a decade. At concerts, he’d roll over the tops of adoring fans, their outstretched hands keeping him aloft. That was novelty long ago; now it seems prescient. For this Tiny Desk (home) concert, Wayne and his bandmates are seemingly quarantined from one another, with the bubble-sharing green-haired drummers and keyboards pairing off, playing together yet apart.

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say that going to a Flaming Lips concert stoned is a thing. The Flaming Lips have always embraced the surreal. Drugs are undoubtedly part of the culture, and on their new songs from American Head, drugs are at the core. These are songs for the lost, the overdosed dreamers, the damaged, the car crashed. On the album’s opening track “Will You Return/When You Come Down” (which also begins this concert), Steven Drozd asks in falsetto, “Will you return? Will you come down?” while Wayne Coyne responds, “Thinking back to those lost souls / And their ghosts / Floating around your bed / Hear it said / Now all your friends are dead.”

This visually enchanting Tiny Desk comes down to earth, with technical glitches that are fun to witness and keep it real.We hear old tunes sparking old memories, including “Be Free, A Way” from 2013’s The Terror and “It’s Summertime” from 2002’s Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots. It’s a thoughtful treat from a band that keeps on giving.

OK, loony-tunes as Trump’s gibberings about “tiny fish” are/were (and yes, this was a direct ripoff of some Alex Jones nonsense), this screed was from 2016 (though four years’ aging haven’t increased its flavor).

I disagreed with President Bush about many things, but I never found him to be an indecent person like this baboon.

The Irish Times:

Exhibit No 1 was George W. Bush, the shrub who would install himself on the White House lawn. Bush had apparently been letting his tongue run loose in the presence of a reporter. The subject had been the death penalty, a topic upon which Bush is almost uniquely qualified. In September the state of Texas executed the 100th person to have met death under his governorship.

Specifically the name of Karla Faye Tucker came up. Tucker, convicted of a double murder, had become a born-again Christian in jail and, as the date of her execution approached, had become a media star in many places…

In brief, Bush was apparently asked if he had met any of those pressing Karla Faye Tucker’s case for clemency. Bush said he hadn’t, but claimed to have seen an incident on the Larry King show wherein King had asked Karla Faye Tucker what she would say if she could speak directly with George W.

What was her answer? the Talk reporter asked Bush. And George W. apparently puckered his lips and, in a mocking, simpering tone said: “Please don’t kill me.”

For a while the old rap against Bush snr, the man born with a silver foot in his mouth, appeared to have returned to haunt George W. His campaign team denied that the exchange had taken place and the squall passed over quickly as America continued to admire the slick funding operation which has made Bush such a phenomenon.

He’s responsible for a lot of damage, his administration and political operatives began fomenting hatred of liberals within days of 9/11. But I don’t think he personally hated liberals and wanted them dead. Or hung as traitors. His biggest issue was not slapping that shit down to win another election. That laid the groundwork for where we find ourselves now.

I generally agree with this. I’ve always regarded him personally as an okay guy - by all accounts, easygoing, halfway intelligent, and personable. I’ve also maintained that most of his bad decisions were the result of trusting men like Karl Rove and Dick Cheney - his lack of judgment when it came to choosing his trusted advisers is his biggest mistake, in my eyes.

Reagan and Bush were uniquely bad managers. Reagan in particular was a terrible head of government. Bush wasn’t as “bad”, but I thought he took too many bad habits from Reagan.

Also remember that the Mercers, Kocks, et al, were and are prominent in the Republican community. They have played the long game for 50 years, ever since LBJ.

In January of 2017, Michael Tubbs of Stockton, California, became the city’s first Black mayor as well as the youngest person elected to that office, at age 26. Not long after coming into office, Mayor Tubbs announced that Stockton would become the first American testing ground for a basic income program. Stockton has suffered economic hardship since the early ’00s and Tubbs promoted a leadership that would invest in the people of Stockton and not simply the image of Stockton. “Work does have some value and some dignity, but I don’t think working 14 hours and not being able to pay your bills, or working two jobs and not being able—there’s nothing inherently dignified about that.”

The Stockton program, funded by private donations, began in February of 2019, through the Stockton Economic Empowerment Demonstration (SEED), giving 125 residents $500 a month with no stipulations on what the money could be used for. One of the benefits to this kind of program is that it allows individual residents and their families make decisions on what is the best way to spend that money, to meet their personal needs. As Tubbs told The Guardian in March of this year, “Everyone we talked to, there was a different way they would use $500, and they all made sense. There was no way, as a government official, I would be smart enough to think of all that.”

Tubbs has been able to extend the program through January to help meet some of the stresses the Trump-driven pandemic has brought to his city. But his example, considered radical just a couple of years ago, is finding its way into other mayoral platforms and policy pushes. CBS reports that mayors in at least 25 cities are pledging their support for similar UBI-style pilot programs.

Let’s not forget that if Trump had not maliciously dismantled the Obama programs to detect and deal with novel diseases, many of the 800,000 deaths and counting outside the United States might also have been avoided. So Trump may be responsible for as many deaths worldwide as Shrub.

You know what’s truly unfair, Bob? The fact that Biden showed up early enough to submit to the test that both campaigns agreed to as part of the pre-debate prep, but Trump was allowed to skip on the “honor system” because he rolled in late. What’s unfair is that, as people work through the evidence, it’s becoming clear that Trump either knew or suspected he was infected prior to the debate and so willfully violated that “honor system” because an admission to the committee would have meant canceling the debate. And what’s unfair is the very real possibility that Trump went there with an active infection with the hope that one or more members of the Biden campaign would catch it from him.

Now blow your “bias” out your ass, Bob.

Hurricane Delta has been downgraded to a tropical storm.

It is expected to become a tropical depression later today as it moves over northern Mississippi, then into Tennessee, then into Kentucky, southern Ohio, and Pennsylvania.

A deep trough plunging into Texas is directing the storm, keeping the High Plains under stable but cold weather. (Hurricanes usually affect our weather here in Western Nebraska with strong northerly winds, frequently causing snow late in the hurricane season.)

Ari Melber (paraphrased): While Biden is doing no better than Clinton in most states, he is doing better in key battleground states.

Most states are baked in for one party or the other. “Doing better in key battleground states” means Biden is doing better than Trump.

Ari going with the “I’m not interested in a horse race” then immediately promotes a horse race.

As alway, ymmv. And you have shown yourself to be an astute observer. Further, far be it for me to defend Ari Melber.

However, his argument is that in Pa Biden is up 7.1 but Clinton was up 8.4 at this same point in the 2016. In Wisconsin Biden is up 5.5 but Clinton was up 6.7. In Michigan the numbers are Biden 6.7 but Clinton 10.7.

That said, one of the failings of the 2016 polls was in the determination of “Likely Voter”. In particular, the polls significantly underestimated “Likely Republican Voters”.

Maybe it means nothing, maybe it means everything. What it means to me is that this thing is not in the bag at this point.

DISCUSSION…As of 09Z (4AM CDT), Tropical Storm Delta was located
about 45 miles south-southeast of Monroe, LA with the storm
continuing to steadily weaken as it lifts north-northeast through
the lower MS Valley.

The radar depiction of Delta continues to deteriorate with the
heaviest rain confined to an area northeast of the center over far
northeast LA and west-central MS where some very cold convective
tops have blossomed over the last couple of hours. In fact, MRMS
data show some isolated 1.5 inch/hr rainfall rates occurring
within this cluster of stronger convection. However, the rest of
the precipitation shield associated with Delta is much less
impressive.

It is very considerate of your lady to do what she can to protect you.

It’s interesting how folks respond to the pandemic. Some, such as myself, are fine with playing introvert and staying mostly isolated. Others, such as one friend of mine, almost view the lockdown requirement as a personal insult and a burden.

My planning, has been as follows (with, admittedly, little basis in actual data)

I am assuming that Covid will follow the 1918 Flu pandemic. With two more waves, one this fall and the final one in the late winter and early spring.

Looking at the numbers for my county about 23,000 out of a million folks have been diagnosed with Covid. About 2%. (~2200 hospitalized and ~600 deceased) Many of the infections were concentrated in small communities. (A couple of old age communities and certain immigrant communities.)

For personal planning (and a complete guess), I have been assuming twice that number have actually been infected. Which gives me a rough infection total of maybe 5%. For the purposes of the next wave, I am assuming that the % population infected will increase by multiples of that 5%. For a place holder, I am assuming a 15-20% infection total at the end of the second wave. And that the third wave will again increase the % population infected. For a placeholder, I am assuming a 50% infection total at that point.

I am also hoping that the third wave will finally be met by effective public health response.

Anyway, I am looking at significantly increasing my sheltering in place at the end of October. Thursday I got what I expect will be mu final haircut for this year. I will begin to limit my excursions to one or two per week, mostly to the grocery and hardware stores. I will also further curtail my going into buildings other than my house.

As noted, none of this has much basis in data, but provides me with a framework if I ever do find useful data.

Kara Eastman receives endorsement from Sen. McCollister, Republican who called out Trump (Omaha World-Herald)

Kara Eastman is the Democratic challenger to Rep. Don Bacon (R) in NE-2.

Sen. McCollister (R) is the state senator (district 20) who has called out the GOP for supporting white supremacists.

McCollister criticized Bacon for voting with Trump and the GOP more than 90% of the time. That is fealty, McCollister said. Last month, McCollister endorsed Democrat Joe Biden for president.

Bacon said Friday he wasn’t surprised by the endorsement for several reasons, including that McCollister didn’t respond positively when he reached out earlier this year. McCollister told Bacon’s camp he was staying out of the race. He said he changed his mind because of the name-calling ads against Eastman.

The governments of Pakistan and India, for having their diplomats play “ding dong ditch” on each other’s homes (this was the igNobel Peace Prize)
Politicians Donald Trump, Boris Johnson, and several dictators in Medicine, showing politicians have greater effect on the course of a pandemic than scientists.

What it means to me is that this thing is not in the bag at this point.

edit: We got typos - Iin to in, Wisconsn to Wisconsin, zapped a superfluous ‘campaign’.

Regardless of current gaps, I haven’t seen anyone suggest that Biden is in a worse position. Just the opposite actually. There are basically no undecideds at this point.

From today’s electoral-vote.com

At the moment, if state polls are just as wrong as they were in 2016, then…Joe Biden wins, 319 EVs to 219.

And

could 2016 repeat itself? Mathematically, it is not conceivable under current conditions. That means that for Trump to score a surprise upset, he’ll need at least one of these three things to happen: (1) significant movement in the numbers, (2) large and systematic polling errors, or (3) shenanigans. Numbers one and two are highly improbable, which means the President is really putting all his chips on #3.

This stuff has been circulating around the intertubes specifically now, because the Access Hollywood tape dropped on 7 Oct 16. So, four years ago this time was when we had the polls right after “grab them by the pussy” and before the Wikileaks shit really started to get traction and then Comey stuck the dagger in. Also, with far more undecideds and third party leaners. Plus, the big October surprises this year were supposed to be Burisma and the Durham report, not Trump’s taxes and the idiot getting coronavirus.

I don’t like the whole “we don’t have it in the bag!” spin with this, because nobody is acting like we have it in the bag. Everyone on the Dem side is completely paranoid about Republicans stealing the election and don’t have to be warned off of overconfidence. I kind of look at Lifehouse as Townsend’s Pet Sounds: So hard to translate from his own head to other people that he drove himself nuts. Who’s Next was what happened when Townsend had to rejoin the real world, including his own band. It’s an album full of great Who songs.

My sentimental favorite Who album was their 60’s pop statement, Sell Out. It’s also got “I Can See For Miles” which is as definitive a Who single as they made.

My sentimental favorite Who album was their 60’s pop statement, Sell Out. It’s also got “I Can See For Miles” which is as definitive a Who single as they made.

Pete did not have a Wrecking Crew to work with nor did he have the musical background that Brian Wilson had with Pet Sounds. In any case, the story behind Lifehouse is prophetic: teenagers who live in self-contained computer-linked worlds in an ecological and economic wasteland.

This is not the usual feel good narrative. Ari Melber may be playing contrarian, but he may also have a point. The election is definitely _not_ in the bag.

Ari is banging the gong for Democrats to engage, get out the vote and attack Republicans 24/7 and not give a single fucking inch to Trump and his asskissers.

Interesting study from Canada that supports the policy of giving money directly to homeless people to help them escape their dire circumstances. It does appear that they screened their subjects to select who would be more likely to benefit from this action. Anymouse, if you see this, what do you think? The funds disbursed seem too low to provide significant assistance here.

CDN$7,500 is a lot of money if you’re homeless.

For that kind of money, you can get first/last month rent on an inexpensive apartment, fed, better clothes to search for a job, &c.

This year won’t quit. A woman you could argue was my best friend, has taken care of me since 1978, just died. I don’t know what happened. She was here yesterday, and not feeling good (has a chronic condition that sometimes flares and caused her great pain), so we just had lunch and talked. Texted her last night and she answered promptly. And now her daughter has called.

Damn…

So sorry for your loss.

The Department of Justice will ignore the President’s threats against his political opponents, as it has in the past, because prosecutors who take an oath to support and defend the Constitution must uphold the rule of law.

Barr has made it clear that he will obey the President over the Law wherever it serves the President to do so.

The problem about the McCain hagiography is that the guy was a dick, and, arguably a war criminal.

Of course Trump is worse, so we use every available weapon but don’t forget no republican after my birth (1959) is untainted.

Good Morning. I’m just a couple of issues from finishing my ballot. Where I am really stuck is app based employees, aka Measure 22.

I voted NO on 22 because I have several friends who got stiffed when Uber and Lyft cheated them out of paychecks. Also they are treated as “independent contractors” that let those usurious pricks off the hook for health and insurance benefits and tax withholding. Oh and as “independent contractors” they had to pay the higher self-employment FICA tax.

Voting Yes on 22 allows those greedy prick corporations to continue to stiff employees.
