A woman seeking asylum gave birth alone and was then separated by @CBP from her baby in a San Antonio hospital.

If one wants to use a policy of deterrence against adults, I can understand although I disagree.

My brother has been my parents’ caretaker for the last 12 years, which would have been his prime earning years. The alternative was either for me to care for them (which I was not prepared to do with a full time job and dealing with my own issues) or to waste everything in their savings for a few years at a nice retirement center before shuffling them off to a Medicare-covered place (not so good). So we basically fell into this, where my brother first cared for my dad as he was failing, and now my mother as she gets older, more deaf, more blind and more forgetful.

Even if my mother were to (God forbid) die tomorrow, my brother is 56 and the chances of him getting another job are slim and none. Not just because of his age, but because he has diabetes and has had a couple of serious musculoskeletal surgeries over the last three years which put limits on what he can do. He’s not going to have enough to retire on. I’m already on the “work til you drop plan” (aka work until 70 to get the most out of Social Security). I’ve made him my beneficiary for the 401K and cash balance plans I have been paying into if something were to happen to me. But this is something we’ve got to deal with—there are millions of people out there in far worse shape.

My husband is already collecting disability, around 2400 a month, so I would most likely get that or a bit less if he passes before me. I could sell the house and maybe find something smaller and less maintenance intensive, etc.

But what about women who don’t have any husband in the picture? Daycare for a special needs kid is not cheap, it literally cost more than I made a week at my last job. So since hubby had the biggest paycheck, I stayed home and learned to be a speech therapist, occupational therapist, school advocate and whatever else was needed. And it cost me. A LOT. I’m 60 now, getting a job is next to impossible unless I start my own business of some kind which with no extra money ain’t happening.

I know I am not alone in this. How can a president and congress help fix this? Because the years pass quick, and certain circumstances remain the same, even if your child becomes an adult. I don’t think I could bear or survive being homeless again, it was hard enough when I was in high school and right after, spent close to three years on the street living a very unsafe and unstable existence. If what I did all these years was truly valued this would not even be a worry.

No, when Trump is gone the next series of actions we take need to hold media accountable. They are a HUGE part of how we got here and continue to leave out key details to inform the public. I’m not just talking about congressional actions, the public needs to keep demanding better, protesting, responding in every way possible to their ridiculous bullshit, letters, calls, emails, in huge numbers. I do think that at some point there needs to be a separation of news from infotainment and if you call yourselves a news outlet, print, online, on tv or cable or whatever, then there are standards you have to meet. So far the media has suffered as many consequences as Trump has. Rewrite the Fairness Doctrine to include the updates in how we communicate. If right wingers complain, too bad. Fox can still be on, it just can no longer call itself news or even a news like substance. Real journalism, mostly via newspapers has suffered a lot, even with the internet, but what passes for actual news is pretty much anything but.

This is where our billionaires could be of service, Tom Steyer, Warren Buffett, etc, could create an actual news network or two, and maybe some of those out of work investigative journalists could be of help to talk them into it. People may not read much in print anymore, but there is still a huge void for real journalism without bias and leaving out something a person in power deems offensive. This requires money, which corrupts everything, but one part of this is not letting the rich guys dictate the terms of what the stations broadcast. They are strictly investors. I’m not smart enough to figure out if anything like this would work, but we have to do something. Soon.

However, if there are criminal proceedings underway when Trump wants to declare bankruptcy next time, the bankruptcy court will not be able to shield Trump from the criminal proceedings stopping any action that involves one of his assets.

So a creditor may file against Trump and Trump not be able to do anything about it, if the asset is part of a criminal investigation or trial.

I don’t know how it will work out for the creditor, but if an asset has been used as an instrument of crime, I suspect that a court appointed administrator will hold the asset until the criminal trials are concluded, and then just dispose of the asset to pay off whatever creditors may claim to the administrator.

This is akin to when drug dealers get their cars confiscated as part of a crime, and the car becomes an asset of the authorities once the legal proceedings are finished.

There’s three big reasons that the WH announcing a relief bill deal with the Dems would mean peeling Mitch off the ceiling:

1. Any bill at this point that would pass muster with Pelosi and Schumer is never going to find favor with the “FREEEDDDUMB!!!” wing of the Repub ranks, which would force Mitch to pass the bill in the Senate with Dem votes. This late in the game, that could cost him and other Repubs their seats due to ire from the MAGAt ranks no matter how much Donny insists that it’s an “awesome deal.”

2. At this point, any delay in the SCOTUS fight would pretty much scuttle the opportunity to pack the seat before the election, which (again) could cost the Repubs seats in November if they’re reliant upon the courts to overturn votes in tight races. The odds that ACB will save Donny’s ass are low, but she might be the vote that keeps Leningrad Lindsey in his seat for another term.

3. Passing a bill at this point in the game would make it impossible to pin the blame on any lingering economic maladies due to CV-19 on Biden should he take office next January. As cynical as it may sound, Mitch wants to know that, whether he keeps or loses the majority, he will ensure that Joe’s presidency will be torpedoed below the waterline before he even takes office.

The thing I am extremely worried about if Biden wins is that Dems will decide to “look forward, not backward” and “take the high road” and there will be absolutely no consequences for anyone involved in the ethical and/or legal depravity of the Trump admin. Right now, corporations wait out taxpayers because they can afford to delay and people cannot. Expand the judiciary to meet those needs.

I suspect the writers of the legislation would be considering exactly that. It would expand the geography of where scotus members come from and also by defacto the diversity. I can see Biden also appointing the court’s first Asian or Native American justice. Biden talks a lot about representation. Hell Harris reminded us all that Trump hasn’t appointed one black federal judge. FFS even Nixon did that.

No, when Trump is gone the next series of actions we take need to hold media accountable. They are a HUGE part of how we got here and continue to leave out key details to inform the public. I’m not just talking about congressional actions, the public needs to keep demanding better, protesting, responding in every way possible to their ridiculous bullshit, letters, calls, emails, in huge numbers. I do think that at some point there needs to be a separation of news from infotainment and if you call yourselves a news outlet, print, online, on tv or cable or whatever, then there are standards you have to meet. So far the media has suffered as many consequences as Trump has. Rewrite the Fairness Doctrine to include the updates in how we communicate. If right wingers complain, too bad. Fox can still be on, it just can no longer call itself news or even a news like substance. There are so many of us out there that have to worry about this, for a host of reasons and situations. A universal basic income would help a lot, but it shouldn’t have an effect on your qualifications for Social Security benefits of any sort. I remember both sets of grandparents, all of them worked and the grandpas died first. My grandmothers both were able to keep their homes and lived fairly comfortably. Nothing fancy but nice. When my dad’s mom began declining due to Alzheimer’s, the family chose to sell the house because that was enough money for her care til the end of her life. The grandmas worked factory jobs, one at anchor hocking and the other for a company called Drew Shoes. A lot has changed since then, but it’s super fucked up that you can work hard for years and still end up in poverty or close to it after retirement. Something has to change. A lot of somethings.

I still do read the WaPo but I think a lot of MSM took the wrong message through the rise of digital and social media. It’s great to be able to spread the news quickly. But it’s also important to have facts straight. Too often I see people who see the quick access that we have to news and getting facts wrong. I still remember after the Boston Marathon bombing, Glenn Beck tried to say it was a Saudi student who it turned out had nothing to do with the plot of the Tsarnaev brothers. To a smaller extent, I repeatedly see friends and I include those I agree with here in posting stories that are easily not true or aren’t current events. I go out of my way while I think I know my politics are known to my friends not to make my social media full of hot takes on current events. The media needs to be aware of the responsibility they have in this age of instant news.

A universal basic income would help a lot, but it shouldn’t have an effect on your qualifications for Social Security benefits of any sort. I remember both sets of grandparents, all of them worked and the grandpas died first. My grandmothers both were able to keep their homes and lived fairly comfortably. Nothing fancy but nice. When my dad’s mom began declining due to Alzheimer’s, the family chose to sell the house because that was enough money for her care til the end of her life. The grandmas worked factory jobs, one at anchor hocking and the other for a company called Drew Shoes. A lot has changed since then, but it’s super fucked up that you can work hard for years and still end up in poverty or close to it after retirement. Something has to change. A lot of somethings.

my grandmother lost her house in Yonkers after 50+ years because she couldn’t afford the property taxes after my grandfather died.
She died in a trailer park in Poughkeepsie.

100 US gallons would cost over $200 in most locations, and no doubt, the fuel efficiency leaves something to be desired. The only 105mm ammunition I can think of for general purchase is mortars intended for entertainment purposes (i.e. 4” firework shells); otherwise, I imagine the government takes a very dim view on private ownership of these things.

That Diffen piece isn’t quite accurate, in some important ways.

I don’t get the “bits per second” comparison being made at all. I can engineer an AM station to sound every bit as good as an FM station (or vice versa), but it won’t matter so long as consumer radios are made the way they’re made. 99% of AM radios available today sound like dogshit. They’re designed to roll off any audio above 3 or 4 kHz, which means they sound kind of like an old analog phone call. I can set up my AM station to transmit flat audio out to 10 kHz or so, and it will sound crisp and clear and punchy on my (long-discontinued) Carver tuner. But if I go out to my car, I won’t hear any of those high frequencies and it will still sound like dogshit.

Most FM radios, by contrast, have no problem reproducing audio up to 13 or 14 kHz. So the odds are much better that you’ll hear ALL of the high-frequency audio my FM signal puts out. And while both AM and FM can broadcast in stereo, AM stereo is pretty much dead after a bad start back in the 1980s, so 99.9% of all the AM stations out there are just in mono. (Dirty secret, though: the nature of most car radios is that they have a very active “blend” circuit that means that unless you’re getting a very strong signal on FM, you’re probably actually listening in mono and haven’t noticed.)

Yes, the article is correct that because an AM signal needs only 20 kHz of RF spectrum (KFI in Los Angeles occupies roughly the space from 630 to 650 kHz, centered on its carrier frequency of 640), you can put more stations into any given width of spectrum, since an FM signal needs 200 kHz. But since the AM band is just over 1 MHz wide (530-1700 kHz, or 0.53 to 1.7 MHz), and the FM band is 20 MHz wide (88-108 MHz), the reality is that in any given community you can put maybe 15-20 AM stations and just over 20 FM stations without interference.

And because the medium-wave spectrum where AM operates is subject to something called “skywave” (signals reflect for very long distances off an ionized layer of the upper atmosphere), while the VHF spectrum where FM is located is almost purely line-of-sight, you can actually reuse FM channels much more aggressively than AM.

KFI, as a 50,000-watt “clear channel” station, is basically the only thing in the West on 640. At night, when “skywave” kicks in, you can be in Seattle or San Francisco or Salt Lake City and turn on 640 and you’ll hear KFI. Which means you can’t use 640 in any of those places, at least not at night.

But even a really good FM signal - say, KFI’s FM sister station KOST on 103.5, with a massive signal up on Mount Wilson - still usually goes only as far as the line of sight from its transmitter. That’s maybe 80-90 miles, depending on the height of the antenna and the curvature of the earth. You can’t reuse 103.5 in San Diego or Barstow, because they’re too close, but you can have a 103.5 in San Luis Obispo and one in Las Vegas and so on. So you can have literally hundreds of 103.5s in the same area that only KFI can use across the entire West.

Still with me? About that “AM is cheaper to operate” - maybe once upon a time, but no more. AM stations’ signals need towers hundreds of feet tall to serve as the entire antenna, because their wavelengths are hundreds of meters long. And you need a ground system - hundreds of long copper wires spread out from the base of that tower. Which means lots of expensive land, and technology that most of the younger engineers out there don’t really understand, because it often involves tubes and trigonometry.

But give me a little pole on a decent-height rooftop, and I can use an antenna that’s only a few feet tall to broadcast an FM signal that can cover a medium-sized city with only a few hundred watts. I could build one of those in a weekend with maybe $5000 in equipment if I had to. So these days, FM is usually much cheaper to operate, too.

Expand the court by 3 spaces. 2 young folks and Merrick Garland.

The Court should expand to at least 15. Expand the number of US circuits to 15. Add at least 100 justices across the entire system.

The courts have been stuck at the current levels for decades, and doesn’t take into account the litigious nature of the nation, the number of cases clogging the dockets, and the slow pace of justice.

15 circuits = 15 members of the US Supreme Court.

There’s no rational reason that the court remained at 9 justices when the number of circuits increase to 13. 13 is insufficient, particularly when the 2d, 9th, and 5th are overburdened with cases (because they’ve got NY, CA, and TX respectively).

Up the number of geographical circuits by splitting the 9th in particular.

That should be among the first things Democrats address, along with the DOJ and rescinding that nonsensical DOJ finding about not indicting a sitting president when they engage in felony conduct.

Having been in the Army Field Artillery, I can attest that there are occasionally… mistakes. I was on the receiving end of ‘friendly fire’ several times when I was a forward observer. Which most definitely isn’t friendly.

Below is an example which I, fortunately, did not participate in.

Memory that depresses me. My 1970 1/2 AMC Gremiln had a 25 gallon gas tank and that was back when the highest price for regular gas was around 25¢/gallon. I could fill the tank for $6.25 AND get a premium for filling the tank up…

Aha! That explains the brown cloud in the video at the time of the shooting.

I had assumed that the cloud came from the firearm. So I was trying to figure out whether the shooter was using some sort of black powder firearm with a more modern powder or something.

I have no compunction saying if roles were reversed, we’d be hearing about how the shooter had the right to defend themselves because there was no way to know what they were being sprayed with and that the assault was started by the person getting shot.

Very true. Audio processing technology is actually better today than it’s ever been. I can make my FM signal sound like a million bucks… but I don’t do the programming, just the engineering, and the source material is all contemporary music that comes in already compressed all to hell. Garbage in, garbage out. (The quality of the mastering, not necessarily the music… I’m not old enough yet to be complaining about “the crap those youngs listen to”!)

I clicked through to the better photo in the article. It looks to me like the pistol is in mid-cycle. It has just been fired. I might even be seeing the ejected empty in the air above the gun.
