We’ve been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to YouTube!

The numbers alone bear out The Blind Boys of Alabama’s status as one of the greatest and most venerated gospel groups the world has ever known. Formed under a different name in 1939, the band has understandably experienced many lineup changes in the 72 years since: Singer Jimmy Carter is the only participant in this lineup billed as a founding member, and even that term is up for debate. But there’s no mistaking the tremendous legacy these men embody, from the 60-plus albums and Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award to the group’s 2007 induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame.

That said, numbers and awards don’t sum up the gentle, easygoing grace of this Tiny Desk Concert, wherein these Blind Boys — young and old, blind and sighted — craft an impeccable mix of polished blues, swinging soul and from-the-gut gospel. The Blind Boys of Alabama’s new album, Take the High Road, features an assortment of country stars, from Jamey Johnson and Willie Nelson to Lee Ann Womack and Hank Williams Jr. That the group so seamlessly bridges the worlds of country, gospel, blues and R&B speaks volumes about its impact on performers of every stripe, not to mention the graceful ease with which its message can stick to just about any soul.

SET LIST
“Take The High Road”
“I Know A Place”

re: #4 Charles Johnson

This is the trend that freaks me out the most.

For these assholes…people don’t exist outside of their as-needed functions.

It’s why Herman Cain dead keeps tweeting, and why they can discount Ginsburg’s own last request as insincere: the dead can’t assert themselves, so they’re the perfect medium of exploitation. They can create counterfeits—attribute words to people, or just whole-cloth invent straw men—and then believe those counterfeits because what else is a person but a means. The real person matters less than the self-serving idea of the person they hold….like a man who hits his real wife because she’s disappointing compared to his idealized vision of what a wife is in general and his wife should be in specific.

This is why they obsess about the safety and welfare of embryos but not people: the former are entirely without agency, are blank slates upon which they can project their wants. When those embryos become people, though, they’re inconvenient: the reality of a person that has needs, has limits, and are not perfectly plastic eidolons upon whom you can impose your will bothers them.

Along with their sense of inherent hierarchy, this default to seeing people as means, not ends, is the defining characteristic of US conservatism. It informs their understanding of everything from sexual mores to foreign policy: a person who is not performing a task that is gratifying to them—the better kind of person—is not a person.

This needs to go into the Compare and Contrast file. I like that he finds a sense of peace and feeling grounded by going to church and trying to be an honorable human. I am not even close to religious, but I respect it when a person isn’t either silently or out loud trying to use religion as a baseball bat to judge and hurt others. It’s honestly refreshing to see. Joe wasn’t even in my top three choices, but I do not for a second regret voting for him.

Not a birthday or any other special occasion, but I just wanted to mention that John McCain’s mother, Robert Wright McCain, is still with us at age 108 (born February 7,1912).
Her longevity appears to be genetic. Her father, Oklahoma oil man Archie Wright, lived to be 97 and her mother, Myrtle Fletcher, to 87.
She was born a year before Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, and four years before JFK. Ronald Reagan was the last president who was born before her, and only by a year. She was 49 and already a grandmother when Barack Obama was born in 1961. Her birth date is closer to the administration of Thomas Jefferson than it is to the present day.

It seems like pretty shitty strategy to keep appealing to such a small portion of the American people. But in Trump’s pea soup of a brain, he thinks all those idiotic boat parades, Blexit goofballs and Bikers for Trump are the majority. He’s in such a tiny bubble with only people around him who protect him from any reality or consequences that he really believes that the rest of us, the MAJORITY of people think he’s wonderful. (As in the mess the other day, “Hi There, it’s me, Your Favorite President”)

I firmly believe he understands that a majority do not support him and that’s why he is doing his best to “rig” the election — preventing people from voting, damaging the post office, planning on taking the case to SCOTUS, claiming that he can lose only if there is massive fraud, sending dog whistles to white supremacists etc. His cult believes that he will win and his tweets, rallies, and Fox appearances are there to incite them and make sure they keep the faith. He is a master conman, show man and liar — and he knows exactly what he is doing. Of course, his act may be wearing thin but we won’t know until the night of November 3rd whether our nation has survived.

So I’ve seen repeated comments here and elsewhere in the last week that getting Covid-19 does not guarantee future immunity to it.

Now, I’m not a great believer in absolutes - guarantee is not a word I’m fond of. But my understanding was that documented cases of people re-catching the disease were very, very sparse. Like, single-digits sparse as of a couple months ago. I would not, on my current knowledge, be afraid to characterize someone who had it once as functionally immune.

Have I missed some major reporting on this? Does anyone have links?

Since this disease is so new, we also have little experience with determining how long immunity lasts.

The answer is we do not really know. There hasn’t been much study on those that catch it and then are reexposed later.

But, given that 25% of all cold viruses are novel coronaviruses and we can catch a new version of the cold, I don’t think we can conclude that people are immune from future infection.

COVID-19 has been around for too brief a time to determine how long immunity persists for this new coronavirus. So no one knows how true this particular tweet turns out to be.

You might get an idea from Worldometer’s numbers for the USA. We have a bit over 5 million recovered (of those detected) and we have a raw case/million rate of 24,117.
Immunity might not be guaranteed, but we are clearly getting an effect.

I’m not an immunologist, but the conclusions are a lot more limited than that: they’re limited to antibody-mediated immunity. Much immunity is conferred through cell-mediated immunity, where T-cells are programmed against antigens and then the body ramps up defenses as needed if the T-cells recognize the antigens in the body. So, you don’t expect to have antibodies to everything circulating around in your blood.

Anything to do with the immune system is ridiculously complicated.

The con man part I totally agree with. But I also think something else is happening. Be it dementia, the effects of years of recreational drug use/addiction, being raised in a home devoid of love and compassion, or a deluxe combo platter of those and who knows what, something is wrong and I think there are at least moments where he truly believes he’s the most popular kid in class. Or he’s talked himself into it for so long that that’s his backup he can retreat to when things turn to shit.

I am no expert on anything, but it’s probably a good thing that I can’t completely wrap my head around all of it. I don’t think I want to delve that deep into that level of sewage.

Agree. White people didn’t create it. I’m definitely not trying to have white people take any credit. The closest analogy to what I am attempting to imply would be giving credit to the meteor for the dominance of mammals. It wasn’t trying to create anything, and deserves no credit.

He’s a Russian whore. He should seek asylum now, beat the rush.

Is it indifference, though?

Trump likes people being hurt and humiliated…really likes it. It’s the thing he lingers on, it the thing he sells to his followers. It gets him excited.

The MAGAT base lives to see people get hurt. They get off on it. It’s the only thing that gives them an orgasm.

Glenn’s continued presence; indeed, survival; in Brazil is proof positive that the crazed homophobe Bolsonaro is as much in Putin’s pocket as Trump or Barr.

Don’t know why Nate is going through 7 year old NYT articles… but here is my map anyway:

[Embedded content]

It pretty much picks up that I am from fly-over country.

It made a very astute guess that I’m originally from Boston, though I haven’t lived there for 50 years. I assume almost all of my working vocabulary is influenced by my parents and siblings. Pronouncing Aunt with a long “a” is definitely not a southern thing!

mmmirele  Oct 11, 2020 • 3:55:41pm

Interesting.

I lived my first 12 years in Concord/Clayton, which is just up the road from Stockton, I lived seven years in in Salt Lake City in my 30s, but I’ve lived the last 20 years at the southern end of the Jell-O belt here in Arizona. Where they got Aurora from, I have no idea.

To follow up on something I mentioned last night:

Presidente Hayes (Spanish pronunciation: [pɾesiˈðente ˈaʝes]) is a department in Paraguay. The capital is the city of Villa Hayes. The department was named after U.S. President Rutherford B. Hayes, who awarded the territory to Paraguay while arbitrating a boundary dispute between Paraguay and Argentina after the Paraguayan War.

Villa Hayes (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈbiʎa ˈaʝes]) is a city in Paraguay, and is the capital of Presidente Hayes Department.

Known as “the City of the Five Names” it was eventually named in honor of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President of the United States.
*snip*
On 11/12/2018 Villa Hayes and Fremont Ohio USA (home and burial site of President Hayes) became sister cities.

Looks like I’m a generalized southern talker, with New Orleans nailed for the poorboy sandwich.

I’m pretty close to yours, with the deep red zone a little further west.

I do have a bit of a problem with the poor boy (folks from Louisiana actually call it a po-boy) description, as it isn’t a generic sub-style sandwich, but is a description of a specific type of sandwich, with the meats being shellfish (fried oyster/crawfish/shrimp) or roast beef & gravy served on crisped French bread.

Unfortunately I’m sure not only aren’t they being tested, they probably won’t collapse either. Unless they have severe symptoms, they’ll just soldier through, infecting everyone nearby.

One of the bright spots of 2020 are these faces making inroads into traditionally religious-right and confederate locations.

Time waits for no man, and the old farts trying to bring back the good ol’ days are marching their way out.

It’s been slow, too slow, but I can see a time coming when today’s religious right/Trumpland is looked upon as we view the Whigs - some strange thing in the past.

So — no more money to Jaime. I am spending on a bunch of other campaigns. Practically nothing for my local candidates who all appear to be shoe-ins. Most of my money is directed toward Senate candidates, but if someone has a local candidate they think needs help, I’d be happy to consider sending money their way. (I’m in Brad Schneider’s district in Illinois).
