I’ve had this in my collection for a while but for some reason never listened until today, and I was completely blown away by the Punch Brothers’ cover of the uncoverable: Radiohead’s “Kid A.” It’s the very last song you’d expect a group of acoustic instrumentalists to attempt, and that’s what makes this band amazing.

I think it’s a leftover meme from a few years back when California was in a drought: Devin Nunes and a bunch of CA GOPers were whining and bitching about water allocations for their agricultural districts - fair enough complaints, but of course (being GOPers) they cast it in classic anti-environmentalist terms: “necessary” (for them) water being “wasted” by America-hating left-wing hippie eco-freaks because of some “little fish” in the SF Bay.

Needless to say, California’s water-allocation issues were (and are) considerably more complex than the simple-minded RW narrative, but I guess a good hippie-punching stereotype is too useful to let go of.

I’m voting in person next week when the local early polling sites are first open. For judges, I always review the Illinois voteforjudges.org website which posts candidate evaluations of 13 separate legal organizations and vote only for judges that get all (or almost all) positive reviews. In any contested race, I vote Democratic, as long as the judge is qualified.

There are other state level races which in another time, I might have voted Republican but not now — not until the GOP has been completely reformed.

Colorado voting:
Received an email Friday from my county’s ballot tracker to say my ballot went in the mail. Ballots arrived Saturday.

Sat down with hubby at the breakfast table today and re-read the handy guides the state and county send out to explain the ballot issues. Ditto the judges reviews. Checked with the county Dems website to determine the candidates for the local races that didn’t list the party.

Filled out ballots. Inserted into the personalized outer envelopes. (Noted that there’s no secrecy sleeve this year. Interesting.) Signed and dated the envelopes. Saved the “I voted” stickers that come with the instructions.

Dropped off ballots in one of the 32 official drop boxes for my county, which are monitored 24/7 by security cameras.

When my envelope is received at the election office, I will be notified by email.

Still need to bug my kid to fill out his ballot, but two out of three straight-D votes for the household are complete.

I started listening to the podcast, Cocaine and Rhinestones. Absolutely fascinating history of 20th century country music. (Tyler Mahan Coe, David Allen Coe’s son. He knows some shit because he lived it.)

Anyhoo, The first season is killer, but it’s obvious that TMC is a complete dick (Allegedly). And there’s never been another season, because TMC is a complete dick. (Allegedly)

But oh that first season. So damn good. I am on the Kershaw brothers episode. Wow!

I’m going to have to take a deep dive into forties and fifties country because it’s so great.

I was fortunate enough to see Doug Kershaw in concert. Didn’t even really know who he was. I mean it was ‘81. I was digging the Cars and Culture Club and Depeche Mode. But he was incredible in concert.

I saw not only Flock of Seagulls but also the Fixx, opening for the Police on a scorching summer day outdoors at a decrepit soccer stadium in the summer of 1983.

As someone who had actually had H1N1pdm09 at the end of April of 2009, it really annoys me to all hell when Clownstick and The Fly rant about what a “disaster” Obama’s handling of it was. Dude it was only 11 years ago. Only children won’t remember. I think more people died of COVID in one month than did in 2 years of H1N1. Someone needs to double blast these fuckers in to orbit on that lie, because it’s one of the most egregious ones, and with these fuckers that’s saying a lot.

I remember it first occuring
getting it,
being sick for 2 weeks,
being over it,
my University considering cancelling graduation ceremony,
we threatened to riot and told them to put out hand sanitizer and wipes.

It was fine…
then I never heard about H1N1 again (after *MAY* 2009) until it was listed on the things I was getting a flu vaccine for years later. I don’t even think I mentioned having it here back then because it was such a non-issue to me.

That totally sounds like a “complete fucking disaster” to me.

Best show I ever saw was in a 300 person theater. (The late and lamented Rainbow Music Hall in Denver) Sinead supporting her first album. She was absolutely freaking insanely good. Was truly obsessed with buying and collecting music when I was a kid and I completely stopped buying and collecting when I got “The Lion and the Cobra”. I honestly felt I had found what I was looking for.

So to see her? And she was everything I could have asked for and more? Crazy.

Was into that album for nearly a year. All I played. :D

I had a roommate during my homeless period who’s father was a Baptist minister. Her foetus died in the seventh month; he relentlessly harangued her against getting an abortion, ensuring she nearly died from sepsis and a hospitalisation of nearly a month when her wanted dead baby was born naturally.

She was ruined: psychologically, medically, and financially (you know he didn’t help with the bills either), and shunned by good Christians in her circle because she must have done something wrong for her wanted baby to die.

Religion poisons everything.

I don’t exactly know how it happened, but we all woke up this morning to a story about a Pinkerton detective, America First-ers and a crime wrongly being blamed on anarchists and yet somehow it is not 100 years ago and I am not currently in a speakeasy singing “10 Cents A Dance.”

Did I blink in front of a weeping angel?

Did we become unstuck in time? Is everything just folding on into itself? Is it that I drank a couple Aviation cocktails last night and now we’re all doing that TV trope where we’re all in the past, usually in some film noir kind of situation, but we’re all also still ourselves? Or are conservatives just super bad at coming up with new material? It is hard to tell.

This weekend in Denver, a protester at a far-right rally was shot and killed after pepper spraying a Pinkerton security guard who was hired by local television station 9News. Police have been very, very clear that the shooter, named as 30-year-old Matt Doloff had no connection to antifascist activists — but, naturally, conservatives have been screaming from the rooftops that dude was basically Sacco and/or Vanzetti and/or Leon Czolgosz. Or they would if they knew who any of those people were.

Totally agree John. This is not the same is personal debt and as mentioned even some of that has a utility. (There is a great scene in Its a Wonderful Life where it is explained.)

This debt is in our currency so it is not the same as Greece or Argentina back in the day.

I was watching the junior NASCAR racing series with my brother on Saturday. It was pouring down rain from Delta, but the race went on, because it was one of the few “road course” races that NASCAR runs. To be blunt, it was a cluster because it was pouring down rain and water was ponding on the roadway. It was funny to see air blower trucks going out and trying to move a half-inch of standing water, with more rain being added despite the effort. The race went like this—start, run a lap or two before there’s a wreck with a few cars, run a couple of laps under caution while the people who wreck go into the pit to try and patch up their cars, wash rinse repeat with the cars becoming progressively more banged up as afternoon turned to evening. At one point, there was a red flag called and drivers had to stop where they were. When they were released to go back to racing, they hadn’t made it even a lap around the roadway before there was a wreck with several cars involved. It was at that point I decided to lay down on my mother’s bed and take a nap. The race finally completed but it was just ugly.

I’d like to see the polling, but I’m far from convinced this is an election issue to anyone but the MAGAts who are beyond reach. The lesson that people learned from the GOP is that when you’re in power, you get to do what you want.

And, if people need extra encouragement, a Dem government will start hearings into the mess the Trump maladministration left it, trials and lawsuits will ramp up, and I don’t think we’ve seen but a fraction of the criminality. And when this shit starts really coming out, the question Dems should ask is where the FUCK were the Federal Courts for FOUR FUCKING YEARS when this shit was going on. Lawsuits were filed from 2017 onwards to stop this and almost nothing got done; they just let the administration drag everything out. The only time they would act quickly was to stop people from voting. The Federal court system failed, and it’s time to fix it.

This on top of record numbers of 110+ and 115+ days this year.

We haven’t gotten any decaying tropical storms or hurricanes from the Pacific this year either.

In a photo posted to social media last week, a young man wearing a mask with Orange County congressional candidate Michelle Steel’s name on it is holding a mail ballot and giving a thumbs up next to a box about the size of a file cabinet labeled “Official ballot drop off box.”

The post, from Jordan Tygh, a regional field director for the California Republican Party, encouraged people to message him for “convenient locations” to drop their own ballots.

The problem is the drop box in the photo is not official - and it could be against the law.

The California Secretary of State has received reports in recent days about possible unauthorized ballot drop boxes in Fresno, Los Angeles and Orange counties, agency spokesman Sam Mahood said Sunday evening. Reports place such boxes at local political party offices, candidate headquarters and churches.

Secretary of State Alex Padilla said his office is coordinating with local elections officials to look into the reports.

Only county elections officials can oversee ballot drop boxes, choosing the number, location, hours of operation and other details. County registrars are charged with making sure every box follows strict state guidelines for security, including making sure they can’t be tampered with and tracing the chain of custody of all ballots.

“Operating unofficial ballot drop boxes - especially those misrepresented as official drop boxes - is not just misleading to voters, it’s a violation of state law,” Padilla said, with a felony conviction carrying a prison sentence of two to four years.

This is the dream my old grad school friend has been waiting for. She went to Notre Dame and was fairly liberal when we became friends. Then as time went on she started attending the local Catholic churches until she found one that she was comfortable with—one that was rigid about doctrine and she dug into her studies of the church until she became that person with anti-abortion stickers all over her car. She visited us last year and gleefully told us that she voted Trump, and this is why. When I say “old” grad school friend, I mean one whom I would help if she called needing help, but I won’t ever go out of my way to contact her again.

ETA: she’s become pretty anti-Notre Dame, too. Thinks it is far too liberal and tolerant of diverse teachings.

The first never tends to do as well as those after. I guarantee you Texas wouldn’t be as close as it is now had Beto not run the way he did. But Harrison is in much better shape than Beto was. Part of our problem here is a good portion of our population, Latinos, undervotes. Harrison isn’t having that problem.

History teaches me that barriers like this were made to be broken. I knew Virginia was becoming competitive when Kaine who is more liberal than Warner won by a bigger margin for Governor in 2005 and the following year when Webb beat Warner. I can’t say if Harrison will win for sure but he’s running a great campaign that will make SC more competitive for the future and beyond.

They identify “secular Americans” (nones, atheists, agnostics, &c) as now the Democratic Party’s most reliable voting block (despite being ignored by the Democratic Party other than one line in the party platform).

Religious people split 50/50 between the parties.

The first paragraph:

Secular Americans, including those who identify as atheist, agnostic, or simply nonreligious, account for 26% of the U.S. population. The 2020 Secular Voices Survey finds that this contingent makes up a growing proportion of both voters in general and the membership of both major political parties. The influence of this population is much larger in the Democratic Party, where they account for 30% of Joe Biden’s voters. I was fortunate enough to see Doug Kershaw in concert. Didn’t even really know who he was. I mean it was ‘81. I was digging the Cars and Culture Club and Depeche Mode. But he was incredible in concert.

If you are at all into podcasts, listen to this one. It’s so damn good.

I discovered that site last year because I googled Bobbie Gentry. Immediately hooked on the whole series. I can understand why he’d give up after one year because he puts so much research into his lengthy stories. It must take a lot of time to put together. I always thought of his dad as a dick so maybe it’s a family trait.

I’m considering donating to outstate MN house candidates today. Trying to decide if I want to give some money to Colin Peterson. He’s a ‘D’ in a district that tends to be close (he won by 4 points last year), but he also voted against impeaching Trump. That’s unforgivable, but he’s still better than ending up with a republican in that district. I may have to kick in a few bucks, but I’ll have to hold my nose. What do you think?

Back when I was in Salem Woods in Virginia Beach, after some petty authoritarian from their HOA came to me to tell me to take down my Gold Star Family window banner, I told them to sue me. I welcomed it. It is protected by federal law.

They also came after me for putting up a clothesline in my backyard. With a privacy fence around the backyard. Which you could not see unless you came in the backyard.

If the Dems get Congress and the White House (INSHALLAH) then that takes away a favorite SCOTUS weapon. Things like the ACA came to the court fixed in stone, since the window to actually pass anything had come and gone. Then the court conservatives could toss around “Congress meant this” and “Congress could do this”, knowing full goddamn well that Congress meant no such thing, and Congressional Goopers were making sure nothing could get done about it.

Once you can pass a supplementary bill in a couple of weeks that says “Congress didn’t mean any such fucking thing, and we’re changing the law enough to moot the case”, then the calculus changes a lot. It’s still really bad, though, because then conservative assholes on the court then start doing the same thing with the Constitution.

The only hope to make it a nonfactor is the interstate popular vote compact getting enacted by states with 270 electoral votes, but then that can be undone by Republicans repealing it. I would increase the size of the House, which would give big states more votes in both Congress and the electoral college.

Warning, which is in effect from noon today to 6 PM MDT this
evening. The Fire Weather Watch is no longer in effect.

* AFFECTED AREA…Fire weather zones 310 and 313.

* WIND…Sustained west 25 to 40 mph with gusts to 55 mph.

* HUMIDITY…As low as 12 percent.

* IMPACTS…Any fires that develop will likely spread rapidly.
Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Hmmm. Didn’t know that, as I’ve only bought one house (this one, and if someone tried to start an HOA here they’d be burned at the stake).

My impression is that the original developer sets up the HOA. It may not be true any longer, but mine also barred political signs. I think that the only ones they allowed were for sale signs, but that may have changed. In any case, the HOA has made life simpler: the monthly fee covers landscaping, snow plowing, and water. As a widow living here, I am grateful not to have to worry about arranging for the landscaping and snow plowing services.

I’m my own snowplow (sung to the tune of “I’m My Own Grandpa”).

I do pay my neighbour to mow my lawn. I’m not sure if a landscaper would do anything about the massive amount of toilet paper snagged in the top of my elm tree this morning, about forty feet up. (I was going to take a picture of it in it’s flaming yellow autumn colour, but it looks more like a Charmin advert now.)

The rest is part of the village government (trash, water, &c).

It is clear that supreme court justices should have term limits. That would reduce the nonsense of appointment of judges not based on experience but who will live a long time.

We’re probably edging up on a time when a sufficiently wealthy person could have a lifespan unconstrained by aging, so we’re going to have to do something at some point.
