San Diego County. The middle steps where the USPS notifies the registrar that I mailed it are missing because I dropped it off directly there.

This was actually in Slade Canyon, which is near Provo, Utah. But yeah, seriously tense moments.

I have yet to receive my ballot. Maybe I missed it in a pile of mail I got this week but I just checked my box and still not there.

The State tracker says it was mailed on the 4th.

I hope I don’t have to go wait in line, with my poor knees.

Mine was mailed out on the 4th and got to me the next day. My GF got hers a day or two later.

I don’t have mine yet either, but it always seems to arrive late — compared to when they start mailing them. I wonder whether they do them by zip codes.

In states where he could get on the ballot as a Presidential candidate he did. In others if he could weasel his way on to the ballot, this is the way he did.

“I’m feeling proud as my God has come to India. I worship Trump as God and believe that I shall meet him soon. He has played a major role in fight against terrorism,” he said earlier this year, according to Asian News International.

He just might get to meet him soon at the rate Trump is going.

That location is the main office of the county board of elections. I am glad to see turnout up, but they also could have opened up some of the early voting locations that have been open in years prior and that might have helped.

So I started to notice how much the music in Halt and Catch Fire sounded like Tangerine Dream.

Good reason for that. Paul Haslinger. Adds a nice air of eighties authenticity.

Well, yes, but the Republicans don’t want people to vote. Hell, I just found out today that they tried to get the ballot extension in Minnesota thrown out - all it did was move the deadline for ballots from “must arrive by Election Day” to “must be postmarked by Election Day”. And they took it to federal fucking court!

I concur. This is part of what I do in my day job, setting standards that are supposed to be applied across disparate teams - similar to the way the federal government should be advising the states. There are ways to do it that don’t nullify state sovereignty.

Weren’t there photos of what looked like the Reagan 1984 electoral map on the Resolute desk? No logical reason for him to have that unless his staff is telling him he had an epic landslide win and he sure acts like it. He’s never once acknowledged he lost the popular vote. It’s gonna crush him when he loses.

Some random Freeper was predicting an electoral blowout for Trump. His methodology? He started by giving Trump all the states he won in ‘16 (why? who knows?) and then added in some others (because reasons.) Results? Trump would sail to a huge victory.

It’s honesty sad. I’ve tried to be realistic in my assessments over the years. I genuinely thought Clinton would win last time and I feel the same about Joe this time. I’m trying not to be a homer but all objective measures tell me Joe will win and win pretty big. I think people are exhausted by Trump and his goons.

I think there needs to be a uniform set of rules and regulations for voting. I get that states make the rules and why, but this is just craziness. It should not be this difficult or complicated. And it should be far more uniform from state to state.

Our brother has periodically told us that Trump was going to get an overwhelming victory. That seems to be the standard talking point. Maybe their polls only interview white people. Or only interview men.

In any case, I cannot rest easy until the votes are counted and confirm that truth has won. The morning of November 8, 2016 I was joking about the coming apocalypse that night — but before the votes were counted that evening, I was sure the results would be catastrophic. I just cannot take this.

This afternoon I went through Indivisible training on Thrutext to use for a project to text to voters in Wisconsin and Michigan and realized that my hostile responses to Trump/GOP texts may indeed have been viewed by a human being, instead of an automated system. I’m not sure that I will actually sign up to do the texting since the process seemed cumbersome.

Based on my readings, many Native Americans in North America called America something similar to “Turtle Island” or some variation of that, and in their own languages of course. In Mesoamerica it was generally some variation of “Land Surrounded by water” and South America “Land of Life”. I’m sure there were dozens or hundreds of other names used as well.

But “Ours” gets the point across the best while there are idiots who don’t get why today isn’t a day to be celebrated.

Er, this is a case of you need to RTWT in order to avoid being taken in by a not-specific-enough headline:

But a look through history reveals that Biden is in a better position at this point than any challenger since 1936, when the first scientific polls were taken in a presidential race.

In the 21 previous presidential elections since 1936, there have only been five challengers who led at this time. Of those five, only one (Bill Clinton in 1992) was ahead by more than 5 points. None of those five were earning more than 48% of the vote in the polls.

The infamous 1936 Literary Digest poll was seriously flawed; the poll had 2 million respondents, certainly far greater by orders of magnitude than modern polls. Unfortunately for them the selection criteria for respondents produced a highly skewed sample — akin to my comment above of only selecting white males for a modern poll.

But it did demonstrate the importance of choosing a sample that is truly reflective of the voting population. The question remains whether that is really possible in a time when people don’t answer phones, don’t respond to texts, don’t reply to emails, and may lie if they actually get back to the pollster.

So it’s only been confirmed to have happened 5 times, and all that hand-wringing from Asia about re-infection back in the spring was way overblown.

Based on this, it means reinfection has happened 0.000013226979% of known cases, which we know to be lower than the true number.

There’s many possible reasons why, but my guess is that “it can happen to everyone and we don’t even get short term immunity to it” is not one of them.

Interesting trailer!

The Brits have a history with orchids going back to at least William Cattley. I suspect that you know the story, so I will defer to your telling of it.

Growing up in the 1960’s, a neighbor who was a doctor, had a hobby of raising orchids in his own greenhouse which was attached to his house. As I suspect that you already know, the rare, exotic, expensive nature of orchids has been mostly ended by tissue culturing.

For grins, I tried keeping some orchids back in the 1990s. Sadly, it did not turn out too well for the orchids.

Thanks for posting!

We’ve all known for some time that the nature of American society, with Trump having found such die-hard marks that they are willing to be suicidal for him, is not going to go away.

And that this election, saving a last minute revelation of the likes US elections have not seen before, was determined a long time ago.

This is not an accident.

Today’s state of America is directly tied to the publication and proliferation of The Fundamentals. An explicit movement to keep people from accepting the discoveries of the modern world, The Fundamentals and those who adhered to them and propagated the ideas throughout American churches set up the culture wars in which we are engaged today.

We are in a religious war, but only a few American commentators are willing to admit this in public. But this is where we are at in 2020.

Democrats, not all but I’d say at least 90% of them, are too afraid to talk about this. In no small part this is because religion, and often conservative religion, plays a large part in the Black community and in the Latino community.

Again I will say, a person being religious is not a problem for the United States.

But when that person believes (and acts like) their religion is a prescription for the rest of society then we have a problem.

re: #139 ckkatz

The genus that bears Cattley’s name did make a big splash in Victorian England. One of the ironic things is that plants of that genus were simply used as packing material for other plants which were sought after by collectors. When the orchid plants bloomed, though, the impact was large.

But that is where the misconceptions began. For the most part, showy orchids of the Americas do not grow in the hottest, low altitude parts of the Amazon. (A large part of the Amazon basin is at sea level and will flood if all the ice in Antarctica melts.)

Continental US native orchids are almost all terrestrial (only a few epiphytes found in Florida and along the GoM coastal waters.) Most of these terrestrials are lovely but are hard to grow, and are threatened with extinction. I would not try to grow them (and it’s illegal to collect them.)

As you noted, mericloning has made the availability of the finest orchids common to any Home Depot shopper. Many of these, phalaenopsis mostly, are imports from low-labor cost areas of SE Asia. The hobbyist orchid business in the US is struggling, like so many hobby specialties that are now considered old-fashioned.

The fad of houseplants, that emerged in the early years of this century, among the formerly-known-as-Yuppies urban apartment dwellers has been focused mostly on foliage, not exotic flowers. I think this fad is fading a bit already, as the Youtube channels that were hot in this field just a couple of years ago don’t seem to be growing much any more.

I don’t see a lot of young people interested in horticulture. Perhaps I am blind to their presence. But to me it seems the computer gaming generation doesn’t have much use for the real living things in this world (flora or fauna.) I consider it a generational sin for the parents of this generation to let the precious years of youth that used to be expended on exploring the outdoors (whether gardening, hiking, etc.) or constructing complex projects (models, woodworking, etc.) now be spent sitting in front of a small screen acting out some violent confrontation with an inanimate thing.

So yes, orchids have an interesting history that can be found entwined with the rest of human history the past two centuries. As can be said of the rest of horticulture. The long arc of our species during the late Pleistocene and Holocene is tied to mastering how to exploit and grow plants.

Columbus was such a tyrannical monster in Hispaniola, not only to the Natives but also to other Spanish living there, that he was replaced as Governor and brought back to Spain in chains. He was imprisoned in Spain for 6 weeks. He lost his official position but was eventually set free and the Spanish crown financed his last voyage but barred him from any governorship.

During his last voyage he beached in Jamaica and was stranded there for over year. The current governor of Hispaniola despised him and obstructed any attempt to rescue him.

This how hated this asshole was.

I repeat: Saudi Arabia is no friend to the United States. We fawn over and support them because we need their cooperation and their resources. We hesitate to inflame their delicate sensibilities, no matter how inflammatory their behavior. It takes a lot of mental gymnastics to call them our ally, but every administration in recent memory goes through those contortions.

FWIW The United States has yet to rise to the level of how Saudi and Russian dissidents are hunted and silenced, but I believe if we continue with the current administration, it’s likely. We currently have all the self proclaimed ‘monarchs in high places’ necessary to ignore the rule of law, and they become more emboldened by the hour.

A small bit of comforting news from electoral-vote.com today

Joe Biden has not trailed in any poll of Michigan, Pennsylvania, or Wisconsin that is in our database, and there hasn’t even been a “close” poll of those states since early September. Meanwhile, that is eight Florida polls in a row where he has led

Since me and mine already voted there’s not much more we can do* so were going the optimistic route

They also explain why it’s likely that
-Biden will be declared winner on election night
-If trump were somehow to win there is no way it could be called for him on election night

*(Oh but we’re still writing gotv postcards)

But the Trump Administration has “contorted” a lot more than others.
And the power dynamics wrt KSA are somewhat different now than in previous years: the Kingdom has pursued a more-aggressive policy of influence on the Arabian Peninsula (such as its disgraceful war in/on Yemen), and - tacitly - encouraging better relations with Israel mainly as a counterweight to Iranian influence. And since, as far the US is concerned, Iran (especially in Trump’s Admin) is still more-or-less the Official Boogeyman Of Evil, it’s unlikely the US can/will/cares-enough-about to do anything to shift them. Regarding the 1943 pogrom, or “race riot” as it was called, ISTR reading, a long time ago, comparing the 1943 event to the 1967 event, that what happened in 1943 may have been a result of Axis psy-ops, spreading rumors that “A Black man raped a white woman!” among whites and “A White man killed a Black mother and her baby!” among blacks.

As for 1967, I was in high school, my friends (of all races) and I were interns at the DIA and we were having a bunch of fun until the riots ruined it.

Oh, I don’t care at all about that part yet. I’m mostly trying to establish a baseline for just how effective the vaccines in test actually are. I’m trying to get a handle on just how “normal” our post-vaccine life will actually be. I mean, if the vaccine is only minimally effective, much of what we’re doing today will have to remain in place, possibly forever.

I had it on for a little bit while driving around from an early work emergency.

It’s all a farce, of course - we know who”ll vote which way, and the only suspense that’s left is whether there’s any procedural maneuver the Democrats can use to delay (Schumer apparently hinted something about denying a quorum over the weekend?), or, the long shot, whether senators get sick and become unable to vote.

But having said that: for all the legit criticism of DiFi as being too old for the job, she brought it this morning, using her personal experience from the 1970s with women’s rights and LGBT rights to lay into Barrett. Not that it made any difference.

The only thing that saved Columbus from being “lost at sea” was that he’d conned the crew into not mutinying for longer that they might have been willing to go on by promising them a generous pension for the rest of their lives as the first person to spot new land.

In keeping with everything we know about the man, he later claimed the pension for himself by lying that he was the first to spot land.

You said it. What’s giving me cognitive dissonance is that they are strictly originalist when it comes to reading books - which is an insanely literal philosophy - and yet they can’t even live in reality and have to invent their own, which is the extreme of imagination.

It’s just lazy and I blame Scalia for legitimizing it. Scalia wasn’t a stupid man but I do think his judicial philosophy was both lazy and hypocritical- see his votes on Lawrence and Obergfell in which he let his pre-existing biases against LGBT people override the 9th amendment.

The only thing that saved Columbus from being “lost at sea” was that he’d conned the crew into not mutinying for longer that they might have been willing to go on by promising them a generous pension for the rest of their lives as the first person to spot new land.

Well, Fauci has been saying that he doesn’t expect a safe and effective vaccine until the end of 2021, which puts us in the same place as distrust and paranoia. Eclectic Cyborg  Oct 13, 2020 • 8:16:49am

So I was just thinking about stuff as I ate breakfast alone. Specifically the topic of court packing and how some organizations are trying to attack Biden for even considering this.

Then it occurred to me: If this situation was reversed (and of course we know that likely wouldn’t happen because Dems would probably wait until after an election to fill a vacancy, but work with me here) and the Democrats were on the verge of setting up a 6-3 supermajority on SCOTUS for themselves…

…Think of the bricks the GOP would be shitting.

…Think of the near heart attack Rush Limbaugh would be having.

…Think about the endless stream of talking heads on Fox News who would be FUCKING DEMANDING the GOP pack the court ASAP when they regain power.

…Think of the bullshit pieces WaPO and NYT would be running SUPPORTING court packing as a “good idea” and “necessary step forward for American Conservatism”

…Think about all the religious wackos telling us we must pack the court to restore a “balance to America”

…Think about the Militias threatening war if the GOP DIDN’T pack the court to stop a 6-3 Dem majority.

Think about all that, then try to come up with a good reason why the Democrats should not consider packing the court.

I bet you can’t, because there isn’t one.

Doug Jones made his name prosecuting the Klan. That’s what the times require. Again.

Yep. All three of those names are great names though and all three I think could fit in somewhere. That’s the good news. There’s a lot of people who could fill multiple positions. If Jones isn’t AG, I think putting him in charge of the civil rights division would be great due to exactly what you’re talking about.

A small bit of comforting news from electoral-vote.com today

Since me and mine already voted there’s not much more we can do* so were going the optimistic route

They also explain why it’s likely that
-Biden will be declared winner on election night
-If trump were somehow to win there is no way it could be called for him on election night

*(Oh but we’re still writing gotv postcards)

OHIO as “exactly tied”?
Excellent news - along with that persistent lead in Florida.

Florida’s had a lot of polls with Joe at plus 50. That’s very encouraging along with Biden’s growing strength with seniors. I’m optimistic about Ohio. It won’t be as big as Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and Minnesota but I think Joe will nip Trump there.

After the corona bug and some re-certification you might be able to get a ride in a B17 for about $500. Before last year’s crash, their predecessor B17 made the flight to Europe for a WWII commemoration. Don’t know how comfortable that would make your German neighbors.

He was the European who opened regular trade and contact…but again, we need to take a more nuanced and balanced view of his role in history.

We were all taught about him in the context of the triumph of the human spirit and perseverance in pursuing a dream and a goal, but his actual personal history is a lot less savory…

Also a question of when someone would next make the attempt to go west, given that the size of the earth was not a secret and the technology then available was unable to support travelling that distance from Europe to Asia by sea. Would it be 100 years before anyone would try again? Our entire world would be very different.

IANAL but that was the decision that led me to lose all respect for Scalia and to reach the conclusion that a person’s heart was more important than their mind in deciding who should serve on SCOTUS. I read the dissenting opinions of both Scalia and Thomas. While I disagreed with Thomas, his opinion was sane and logical given his philosophy, and expressed in acceptable moderate language. OTOH Scalia issued an offensive screed with objections based on fanaticism and not the law. The last thing we need on the court is another lying religious fanatic and Scalia clone who is guided by theocratic principles and RW ideology.

39%!!!

As the election heads into its final stretch, Sinclair Broadcast Group, the largest operator of television stations in the United States, is amplifying Trump’s misinformation about mail-in voting.

Sinclair owns and operates dozens of affiliates of NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX. In some areas that may determine the next election, Sinclair controls multiple local news stations. In Columbus, Ohio, Sinclair controls the local ABC and FOX stations. In Pensacola, Florida, Sinclair controls the local ABC and NBC stations. In San Antonio, Texas, Sinclair controls the local NBC and FOX stations. According to its latest disclosures to the SEC, Sinclair produces “approximately 2,550 hours of news per week at 129 stations in 81 markets.” In total, Sinclair reaches “thirty-nine percent of American viewers.”

If she had signed such a petition in 1996, she would be entitled to a pass. This court will definitely overturn Roe v Wade; the question is what additional restrictions, if any, will it impose on women seeking abortions in states where it is legal. Scandal in Nebraska.

The governor’s office hired an outside consultant (who happens to be a long-time friend and lives next door to him in Omaha) to “right-size” the Health and Human Services Department, specifically the part which oversees the pandemic. That cost the state $500,000.

On top of that, the outside consultant recommended a complete reorganisation (in the middle of a pandemic), firing a bunch of people, and placing the state epidemiologist under the oversight of the “CEO” (yes, Governor Ameritrade renamed the department head CEO) as an advisor.

He also moved the state medical officer, who has no experience in epidemiology (he’s a surgeon) into his briefings to the public instead of the state epidemiologist.

Elect conservatives, get corruption (both theft and trying to hide Nebraska’s shameful epidemic numbers). A Democratic state senator has oversight of HHS and is enquiring where did this $500,000 come from, how the governor picked his neighbour, why are we reorganising during a pandemic, why is the epidemiologist now in an “at the pleasure of firing of his boss” job, &c.

However, the legislature is out of session, so it seems unlikely much will happen.
