Tigran Hamasyan - 37 Newlyweds (Official Video)

Dear Friends,
About a 100 years ago Armenia was at the edge of existence when the Ottoman Army was already inside Eastern Armenia after massacring and deporting Armenians of Kars, Mush, Sassoun, Zeytoun, Karin (Erzrum), Van, the list goes on…. In 1918 when the Ottoman Army was reaching Aparan region and it was clear that this was a battle for survival of a nation (Bash Aparan battle), 37 newlywed couples from 37 surrounding villages put on black tunics, marked their foreheads red, got on white horses and rode into the battlefield to fight the Ottoman army.
About a 100 years later, Armenia is again on the brink of its existence because of dictatorial regimes in Azerbaijan and Turkey, whose governments are doing everything to take over Armenian lands and cleanse these territories from Armenian identity.
It is incredible that the release of this video is coinciding with the current aggression on Artsakh and Armenia.

This song is dedicated to 37 Armenian newlywed couples from 37 villages who, in 1918, put on black tunics, marked their foreheads red, got on their white horses, and rode into the battle to fight the Ottoman army.

I have taken the lyrics from two different Armenian folk songs and composed a new melody for them.

Սարիցը պաղ քամին փչեց,
Վառվում եմ, վառվում,
Վառ կրակ դառնում։
Ամպել ա կամար, կամար,
Ես կմեռնիմ քեզի համար։

The cold wind blew from the mountain,
I am burning, burning,
Turning into a bright fire.
It has turned clouded as if arch after arch,
I will die for you.

Grand Island Public Schools’ mask policy questioned at meeting (Grand Island, Nebr. Independent)

Grand Island Public Schools’ mask policy was front and center during the Board of Education meeting Thursday night.

Parents expressed concerns about the district’s policy mandating that all students and staff members wear masks and the need to adjust the policy. The parents are a part of the “No Masks GI” Facebook group. At least one parent outside the group supported the district’s mandatory mask policy.

Shree Arends said she hoped the board could “have an open mind and heart to hear our concerns for our children and community.” She asked the board to consider giving parents a choice on whether their students wear masks at school.

“We live in America. We deserve a choice to wear a mask or not wear a mask,” Arends said.

Shorter wingnut: We live in America. We deserve to infect your children and kill the teachers.

More in that article says parents were also mad that visiting fans from other schools’ teams were banned by the Kearney school board.

The board said the reason opposing team fans were banned was because they received numerous death threats against the students and staff over mask requirements. The school board said they banned opposing fans to protect students and staff.

Republikkkans out number Democrats in this district by over 40k. It’s an uphill battle. The Democratic party probably should have tried talking a veteran into running here. It’s probably the only way you will ever turn all these old white pearl-clutching dudebros out here away from the mystic ᚱ rune.

The people who will scream bloody murder over the idea of having LGBT teachers in classrooms because “They’ll brainwash our kids!!!” and actually try to argue that just the presence of LGBT teachers can influence kids…think that measures meant to prevent the spread of an actual disease that has killed 200-300K Americans should be put to a vote.

I know, I’m in the district just south of his old one and north of his new one.
And how weird is it to have two Arabs running for congress in that district? Progress, I guess? At least there’s less overt racism in the GOP campaign this time.

15
Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus  Oct 13, 2020 • 11:02:30pm

Interesting thing is that 538 is predicting that the House numbers will not change. Well, 1 additional seat is leaning Democrat.

The reconfiguration from the census will not change this much. A few more urban-centric congressional districts scattered around the west and south may lean Democratic but not guaranteed (save if Oregon adds one House seat, or Washington state.) Texas will probably add a seat but given how the Republicans gerrymander that state I expect it to be designed to be Republican.

Sad reality that just hit me earlier: Assuming that Trump doesn’t abandon ship on the promise of Mike granting him a pardon or tries to actually pardon himself and roll the dice with the USSC, then next year will see one of the most truly cynical acts of political theater in our lifetimes: Media pundits arguing that Biden should grant Donny a general pardon in order for the country to “heal.”

That’s just the beginning.

Every pundit will strive for fame and fortune, and the need to drive ratings will keep TV a hopping with faux Democrat scandals, some nefarious object in Harris’ past, etc.

The big kicker will not be to pardon Trump but that Biden must compromise with the Trumpers and GOP minority (hopefully) in the Senate.

Let’s face it, Trump is old, not that healthy, and will face state (NY) legal charges beyond a Presidential pardon.

The real problem for Biden is that the GOP and Trump have set up the US for a great economic crash. If we have one worse than 2008 (possible), then the Trumpers will come back strong for the next demagogue that comes by in 2024.

538 has my district remaining blue for another 2 years, projecting an 83% +/- chance that Luria will win another term. I can’t tell whether that’s due to the projected turnout on Election Day…or the fact that people haven’t forgotten that the guy running for the seat (Scott Taylor) got caught in ‘18 running an operation out of his office to get a third party candidate on the ballot in the hopes of skimming just enough votes off the final total to squeak by.

Yeah but the physical boundaries did not change in any major way so that that I remember. CA 50 of today and CA 52 from before 2013 are more or less the same districts.

What is CA 49 and CA 50 today *were* the 2 safe Republican districts left in San Diego County until 2018, then CA 49 flipped and Issa was thrown out. So now he moved a few miles inland to try again here in South Jesusland, CA.

CA 50 is DEEP RED. I don’t see this changing before the 2030 census changes go into effect (assuming there is one).

Protest held over import of sub-standard produce

Member of the Thirsk and Malton Green Party, along with local farmers, delivered a letter to the Old Malton office of MP Kevin Hollinrake on Saturday.

Barbara Hickman, on behalf of the group, said: “We are rightly proud that here in the UK we have a reputation for having some of the best animal welfare, environmental and food safety standards in the world.

“If we allowed in mass-produced chlorinated chicken and meat from cattle and pigs raised in terrible conditions and pumped full of antibiotics and artificial hormones, we would throw all that away.

Youtube being a social media site of course offers suggestions based on one’s interests, so among many different topics Youtube throws up orchid videos for me.

I wasn’t expecting this though, a luxury private garden in Jamaica:

The Doctor’s visit: A fabulous Vanda garden in Mandeville

That’s quite a garden, I suspect the owner has to be one of the richest people on the island, given Jamaica is not known for being a wealthy nation.

Note: Vandas are not terrestrial orchids. Though they are shown in beds, they are in pots (with gravel), and then sunk into gravel beds. The gravel just anchors them so they don’t fall down.

Yes, that Vanda garden is impressive! They certainly do look healthy and happy.

As you note about them, all the vandas I had ever seen were suspended in wooden frames in greenhouses.

I didn’t see any irrigation equipment so I assume that they are watered by hand. That is a lot of time. But the general cleanliness of the garden implies to me that there is a full time professional gardener. As you point out, that set up is expensive.

I didn’t see any netting, so I do wonder why there are not a lot of birds feeding on the koi in the pond.

The trusted traveler program allowed people traveling out of the country easy access back in. No long lines at customs, just scan your card and pick up your luggage.

So revoking that for NYers meant 1 plus hours standing in a line at customs when you return from a trip.

Trump’s gonna be a bigger millstone for the party to carry than any in recent memory. He’ll be only the second president in the past 30 years to fail to win a second term. If the polls hold true between now and November, he won’t even have a thin-margin loss that he can spin as due to “fraud,” his loss will be a resounding one that will likely cause the party several Senate seats and perhaps the majority of the chamber. The worst part of it all? Barring a last-minute resignation in exchange for a pardon by “President” Pence,” they’re gonna have to carry this failed presidency to term.

And as much as they’ll want to, they can’t direct the angry mob towards him while screaming “HE’S THE ONE YOU WANT!” as they duck out the back. They took so much pride in keeping him from being removed from office so they can’t treat him like they did Nixon, and there’s no one policy that he enacted against their wishes like Bush Sr’s tax increases that they can pin the blame squarely on him. Every step of the way, they were willing accomplices and fought with all their might to keep him from facing the consequences of his actions.

My personal belief? They’re gonna try and make the promise of a pardon part of any negotiations for CV-19 relief/debt ceiling increase. They’ll float a trial balloon sometime in the weeks immediately after the election, acknowledging what everybody knows: Donny’s biggest fear about losing is facing federal charges for his acts both in and out of office. They’ll say it’s a way to ensure a peaceful transition: Trump gets a pardon, Biden looks magnanimous, and the country “moves forward.” Unspoken will be how it also allows them to push public anger onto Biden for Trump skipping out on the consequences of his actions.

And another song from long ago:

Filhos do Tempo - Didá Banda Feminina

The picture is a famous one of the slave Anastacia who is venerated by many in Brazil.

There are a lot of conflicting stories about her and her life. But the main theme that goes through them is that although a slave she is a powerful and independent woman. This frightened her masters who forced her to wear a muzzling facemask.
en.wikipedia.org

Some background on the group, Didá Banda Feminina:

When Carnival season comes around, as it does every February, it’s the percussion groups and their electrifying rhythms that dominate Salvador’s streets over the course of the one-week event. They parade up and down and around the city, producing various beats from samba and axé to samba-reggae, a Caribbean-Afro Brazilian genre that originates from Bahia. Of all these genres, one instrument is always present - the drum. Drumming traditions are at the heart of Salvador’s music and was always an instrument played by men.

Banda Didá is proving that traditions can and do indeed change. Formed in 1993, the band is the first all-women Afro-Brazilian percussion band (known as a bloco-afro) in Brazil and are bringing visibility to black women in Brazil. Since their success on the Salvador music and Carnival scene, several other all-female percussion groups have been inspired to follow in their footsteps and bring more female-produced music to Bahia.

In any normal world, we would just accept that the president has completely cracked, and even the remote possibility of leaving him in office, much less re-electing him, would be unacceptable

This is the New Media Reality, which Trump helped usher in, but not without the active and willing assistance of mainstream and social media.

They’ll burn that bridge when they get to it. While Biden and/or Congressional Dems couldn’t order NYS to make the state/local charges “go away,” it’s possible that they could hinder or even kneecap such by revoking federal support of the investigations. Or apply pressure to accept guilty pleas in exchange for light sentences that don’t include jail time.

I really doubt Biden would do that. There is little reason for anyone, even Republicans, to support Trump when he no longer is in office.

I do expect that the talking-heads will be the chorus for Republicans whining about how Biden won’t compromise with them.

This is why this election is so important in being a mandate. Enough Senate seats have to flip to really scare the GOP into thinking they are looking at a future that the Republicans haven’t faced since FDR.

I’m shaken to learn that Judge Barrett served on the Bd of Trustees of a group of private schools that barred children from attending their schools simply because their parents were unmarried. In the year 2017.

These are the “family values” that the GOP embraces: not valuing families enough to actually help them raise and educate their children, but working to impose a certain social and ethical model onto them.

I wanna take a sec to point out that I said that Repubs would push for a pardon, I never said that Biden would go along with it. And the reason they’re going to pursue such is because they want to make the man disappear in the worst way, but at the same time when the dust settles the MAGAts will still be there. This isn’t some horror film where the death of the Big Bad makes all his little minions scatter or dissolve into dust. The reality that he will have cost them most of their remaining “moderates,” leaving most of the TPers there to drag the party further to the right will only make matters worse for them in the short term.

The reason that none of the other GOP primary candidates would attack Trump in 2016 is that they all believed he would flame out and hoped to pick up his support.

Now they are struck with an unruly base that wants only Trump (or someone worse) and has no use for moderation or compromise.

I agree. My ‘thought’ for the evening…

It seems to me that Trump’s public power is due to his ability to create ‘entertaining’ content for the media. By entertaining I mean that attracts lots of viewers. (A lot of them out of fear and anger.) And Trump is very good at this.

The media love this for the revenue and power it brings them. They prioritized his content over all others in 2015-2016. Traditional campaigns using traditional methods were tied by norms, such as respect and truth while Trump, who respects nothing, did anything and everything that created more media for himself. This handicapped the ‘normal’ candidates, although I hesitate to use ‘normal’ to describe much about Cruz and Graham.

This is one reason why Clinton got buried in the media. This is what I think critics mean when they say she ran a ‘poor’ campaign.

The problem is of course, that this content-creation goal is in place of rational governance. Because the goals of the two objectives are very different. It seems to me that this is why Trump is portrayed as both brilliant and an idiot. He is just playing a very different game with very different goals.

Without rational governance, millions of citizens lives and well-being are put at risk. A lot of the media have not yet figured out that they are in as much danger as the rest of us.

Meanwhile, the entire circle around Trump are grifters, criminals, and sociopaths. Normal organizations try to filter these folks out in favor of the competent. Trump has sought them out because they are weak and compromised. This results in a weak and compromised government.

Further most of the competent people have filtered themselves out because they favor goals of competent governance.

We need to vote out the current administration before they do further damage and fatally weaken our country and its institutions. And then we need to inventory the damage, fix it and encode the lessons into law and into our institutions.

I guess because some may actually treasure their country and a future for themselves, their families and loved ones.

Fortunately us voters do have some free will, occasionally a few have wisdom, and even more occasionally, a small number will exercise the two. So not all will be listening to the media and obeying the media’s desires.

The US also has an advantage in that being a large, and (still) wealthy country, it has a diverse media and information industry. That will hopefully help. Many small and poorer countries lack that.

Police in Milan say they have arrested a 39-year-old Italian woman, who has worked for Cardinal Angelo Becciu, a senior Vatican official who was demoted last month over embezzlement claims.

Cecilia Marogna says she was paid €500,000 ($587,000; £454,000) by Cardinal Becciu.

Ms Marogna was arrested after an Interpol warrant was issued at the Holy See’s request, according to reports.

Both Ms Marogna and Cardinal Becciu have denied any wrongdoing.

In interviews with Italian media in recent days, Ms Marogna confirmed that she had been paid €500,000 by Cardinal Becciu through a company she operated in Slovenia. She said she received the money to provide “parallel diplomacy” to help missionaries in conflict areas.

A senior Vatican source told Reuters news agency that Ms Marogna was suspected of “embezzlement and aggravated misappropriation in complicity with others”.

The cardinal allegedly authorised the payments to Ms Marogna while serving as number two in the Vatican’s Secretariat of State, which manages the Church’s donations.

re: #70 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

It was petty af. Pure trump stupidity.

As for Republicans in NY/CA, fewer and fewer every day.

But, as ever, the law of unintended consequences applies.

It wasn’t just rich international travelers in NYC and LA who used those trusted travel programs. One of them was the NEXUS card, designed to speed crossings at land borders with Canada for frequent crossers. It was a boost to the economy in places like Detroit/Windsor, Buffalo/Niagara… and up in New York’s North Country, where commerce to and from eastern Ontario and Quebec is vital.

But guess what? Between shutting them out of that program for no good reason and then ineptly handling the pandemic in a way that’s kept the border with Canada sealed shut probably into next year, Trump has seriously fucked with the North Country economy (and western NY too.)

And gerrymandering being what it is, the Republicans who still dominate the rural areas are neatly packed into a few House districts that have already been swingy the last few cycles and could be brutal this year.

The one I’m watching most avidly is Elise Stefanik in the North Country. She leeched herself so tightly to that orange ass that she has to own all his failures, especially the border. It *should* doom her and cost the GOP that House seat.

But the border regions also take in John Katko’s Syracuse-based seat, which swings back and forth with very tight margins even in normal years. And in Niagara Falls, the seat that used to belong to criminal Chris Collins (who just went to prison, finally) is super-vulnerable.

All three seats have great Democrats challenging for them: Tedra Cobb against Stefanik, Dana Balter against Katko, Nate McMurray in the old Collins seat. They’d be a nice trio of pickups.

And the icing on the cake is that redistricting will take away at least one upstate NY seat. If we put Democrats in all of those (plus the two safe D seats in Rochester and Buffalo), it will make it easy for the Democrats in Albany (at or near a supermajority) to craft new lines in 2022 that will keep those seats safe but send the Southern Tier Republican, Tom Reed, home to Corning.

Pittsburgh-area mail carrier under investigation is apparent QAnon conspiracy theorist (Pittsburgh City Paper)

According to screenshots of a Facebook page apparently belonging to Troesch, the mail carrier has been trafficking in conspiracy theories related to QAnon for at least the last several months. QAnon is a baseless pro-Trump conspiracy theory that falsely believes elites and Democrats are running an underground child prostitution ring and eating babies. Belief in this conspiracy theory has been growing over the years, and many QAnon supporters have been seen at Trump rallies.

Missoulian now endorsing Tranel for PSC (The Missoulian)

We didn’t know she was a wingnut, honest!

Readers and business leaders contacted the Missoulian after its initial endorsement appeared Sunday morning offering their opinions and asking the Missoulian to review its endorsement, which the Missoulian did.

The Missoulian determined that it failed to give proper weight to Fielder’s connection with groups such the Coalition of Western Property Owners and the Bundy family that led an armed takeover of a wildlife refuge in 2016. She also recently helped spread baseless rumors about Antifa supposedly traveling to Missoula to foment violence at Black Lives Matter protests, which encouraged militia-style groups to attend those protests.

The Missoulian has staunchly supported Black Lives Matter peaceful protests and opposed the activities of the Bundy family and other groups posing a threat to our government. Fielder also actively supports transferring management of federal lands to the state government, which the Missoulian has long opposed.

The Missoulian erred in its initial endorsement and is rescinding it. In short, we blew it.

Meh. Let him make an ass out of himself on national prime time TV. He can barely speak for two minutes coherently. His vocabulary is limited too, so every question about what he’s going to do to MAGA will be “we’re looking at that very strongly” or “we have a plan we’ll reveal after the election” or other crap. This is timed to run against Joe and syphon off viewers. Then the next day he’ll tell everyone how bigly his ratings are over Joe’s.

Photos of a Delaware federal court subpoena given to The Post show that both the computer and hard drive were seized by the FBI in December, after the shop’s owner says he alerted the feds to their existence.
But before turning over the gear, the shop owner says he made a copy of the hard drive and later gave it to former Mayor Rudy Giuliani’s lawyer, Robert Costello.

Steve Bannon, former adviser to President Trump, told The Post about the existence of the hard drive in late September and Giuliani provided The Post with a copy of it on Sunday.

Retired Navy Captain Rick Holdcroft has attacked State Sen. Carol Blood as a “radical Democrat” who is “too extreme for Nebraska” in a series of campaign fliers in the lead-up to the November election.

Blood this week poked fun at the ads, suggesting they be used as kindling for family bonfires, to remove gum from the bottom of a shoe or as a scoop for animal droppings.

The exchanges show how differently Blood and Holdcroft are running their campaigns for the District 3 seat in the Nebraska Legislature.

Holdcroft and Republican groups have sent out several fliers in recent weeks. Some claim Blood voted to reduce jail time for “violent convicts” and “pedophiles” and that she has “let our police down” with her votes in the Legislature.

Blood, a Democrat who touts her commitment to focusing on bipartisan cooperation, said the fliers contain half-truths and lies and go “beyond the pale” of how campaigning should be conducted. She said she doesn’t engage in “negative” campaigning.

LOL

In a video posted on Facebook Monday (1:44), Blood offered other uses for the fliers against her, at one point tossing a Frisbee with Holdcroft’s face taped to it for a dog to fetch.

Paul Krugman thinks that SCOTUS may not strike down the ACA, which would put intense pressure on Congressional Democrats to expand the Court, because Charles Koch has another target. He wants SCOTUS to end Chevron deference and return to the Lochner era of a century ago, when SCOTUS routinely struck down laws regulating economic activity. His vision is of corporate America being freed of regulations protecting consumers, the health, safety and right to organize of workers, and especially environmental regulations.

Amy Cooper Made Another 911 Call on Black Birder—and It Was Worse Than the First

thedailybeast.com

Amy Cooper, the white woman who called police on a Black man after he asked her to leash her dog in Central Park, called 911 twice during the Memorial Day incident, falsely stating in a previously unreported call that he “tried to assault her,” prosecutors revealed Wednesday.

Cooper, 41, was charged in July with a misdemeanor count of falsely reporting an incident in the third degree, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office said. In a 911 call captured in a viral video, she allegedly falsely reported that Christian Cooper, 57, was threatening her life. The charge is punishable by up to a year in jail.

However, Cyrus R. Vance, the Manhattan district attorney, said in a statement Wednesday that Cooper allegedly “engaged in racist criminal conduct” when she made a second 911 call in which she “falsely accused a Black man of trying to assault her.”

LOCK HER UP!

Its people like this who undermine the credibility of women reporting actual assaults. Her conduct is utterly reprehensible; she attempted to commit murder by cop, and she should go to prison.

In case anybody missed it: that story from yesterday about that unexploded WWII “Tallboy” bomb they found at the bottom of a shipping canal in Poland?

The problem has been resolved: “BOOM!!!”
(via BBC: w. video)

It was described as having gone off “while being defused”, though the report also said that nobody had been injured. Since Tallboys loaded 5,200 lbs (2400kg) of explosive, that “BOOM!” was pretty big: either it was being worked remotely, or those Polish divers are a really sturdy lot…

The Polish EOD team were apparently using an underwater robot to deflagrate the charge in the bomb i.e. burn it out of the casing. They weren’t trying to “defuse” it since the original fuze had failed in the first place. Most bomb disposal operations on old bombs involve extracting the explosive charge by deflagration or steam injection since the fuzes are usually rusting lumps of scrap after the passage of sufficient time. They did take the precaution of evacuating residents from the area around the canal before attempting this operation. Wise.

The explosive charge in a Tallboy bomb was about 2.2 tonnes of Torpex, a compound with a high brisance. It was originally concocted for torpedo warheads as the name indicates. It used aluminium powder as an accelerant (just like modern rocket boosters) and unusually it was melted and cast into the Tallboy and Grand Slam bomb casings for maximum explosive energy and mechanical stability on impact.

I’m still a little surprised this bomb’s charge high-ordered during the attempt at deflagration. It’s possible the charge’s chemistry may have degraded a little over the 75 years or so since it was poured and become unstable.

Trivia note: The bomb bay dimensions of the B-52 were originally set by a requirement that it be able to carry the Grand Slam bomb internally and not, as often assumed, by the dimensions of early atomic bombs, which were much smaller.

Thanks for the background (and what Mom Anon said at #257!).

While I realize that no ordnance ever has had a 0% fail rate, after reading the wiki on the Tallboys, I’m also surprised that none of its multiple detonators worked to set off the charge, given that these bombs were virtually individually hand-crafted, and machined to very exacting standards: (old Barnes Wallis really knew his craft) - I would have thought the detonators would have been quality-controlled to exacting standards.

Interesting fact about the Tallboys: they were so hard-to-make and expensive, that aircrews using them on bombing raids were forbidden to jettison them if they were unable to drop: they were considered more valuable to try to return and re-use than the aircraft (and crews)
jeopardized thereby.

Trivia note: The bomb bay dimensions of the B-52 were originally set by a requirement that it be able to carry the Grand Slam bomb internally and not, as often assumed, by the dimensions of early atomic bombs, which were much smaller.

The B-series Lancaster bombers of 617 Squadron (“The Dambusters”) that flew the Tallboy and later Grand Slam missions were heavily modified — the “earthquake” bombs were carried in conformal configuration, half inside and half outside the fuselage and all the defensive weapons and some of the armour was removed to save weight.

This version of the Lancaster was a candidate to carry out the nuclear bomb attacks on Japan in 1945 as the Silverplate nuclear-capable versions of the B-29 had a difficult development. The original B-29s had two bomb bays, one in front and one behind the main wing spar that ran through the fuselage. They needed a single large bomb bay to handle the Little Boy and Fat Man bombs but the wing spar was in the way and it needed to be relocated to make space. Conversely the Lancaster had limited range so experiments in in-flight refuelling were carried out but in the end the Silverplates were ready in time for their nuclear missions.

There’s a good summary of this secret history in a Youtube by the excellent Mark Felton.

Microsoft warned that Trickbot has infected a number of public government agencies, which could suffer worse damage if the operators encrypt files or install programs that interfere with voter registration records or the display and public disclosure of election results. Microsoft worked with companies including security firm ESET to disassemble Trickbot installations and trace them to their command IP addresses, and invoked copyright law to secure the court order. Said Microsoft’s Tom Burt, “Ransomware is one of the largest threats to the upcoming election.”
