What Republicans Say When They Think Nobody’s Listening: Videos Show Closed-Door Sessions: ‘Be Not Afraid of the Accusations That You’re a Voter Suppressor’

Politics • Views: 27,094

Of course they talk openly about suppressing votes when they think they’re behind closed doors: Videos show closed-door sessions of leading conservative activists: ‘Be not afraid of the accusations that you’re a voter suppressor’.

Videos provided to The Post — covering dozens of hours of CNP meetings over three days in February and three in August — offer an inside view of participants’ obsessions and fears at a pivotal moment in the conservative movement. The videos, recorded by CNP to share with its members, show influential activists discussing election tactics, amplifying conspiracy theories and describing much of America in dark and apocalyptic terms.

Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, told attendees that same day (August 21) that the left is “war-gaming” a plan to delay the election tally until Jan. 20, 2021, and enable House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to become acting president. “This is kind of like crazy talk” among political people, Fitton said. But he added: “This is not an insignificant concern.”

Expressing concern about voter fraud and disenfranchisement, Fitton called on the audience to find a way to prevent mail-in ballots from being sent to voters. “We need to stop those ballots from going out, and I want the lawyers here to tell us what to do,” said Fitton, whose organization is a tax-exempt charity. “But this is a crisis that we’re not prepared for. I mean, our side is not prepared for.”

[…]

Brent Bozell, a CNP executive committee member and founder of the Media Research Center, another tax-exempt charity, told attendees at one of the August sessions that he believes the left plans to “steal this election.”

“And if they get away with that, what happens?” he said. “Democracy is finished because they usher in totalitarianism.”

Clarence Thomas’ surprise
Judd Legum

Section 230 has two critical provisions. First, “[n]o provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be treated as the publisher or speaker of any information provided by another information content provider.” In other words, if someone posts something defamatory on Twitter, the courts won’t view Twitter as the entity that spoke or published the content. Second, an “interactive computer service” will not be held liable for “any action voluntarily taken in good faith to restrict access to or availability of material that the provider or user considers to be obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable, whether or not such material is constitutionally protected.” This means that YouTube, for example, won’t be held liable if it makes good faith efforts to moderate its service.

But have the courts interpreted Section 230 correctly? On Tuesday, Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas issued an unusual 10-page opinion arguing the courts have gotten Section 230 wrong. Thomas argues that the courts are giving tech companies like Facebook and Google more legal protection than they are entitled to under the law.

Are you shitting me? I knew this in 6th grade FFS. You know, I am just fed the fuck up with inept, ignorant, wouldn’t know what a real day’s work was if it bit them on the ass, no talent assholes not even have to try all that hard and get rewarded over and over for being awful, and certainly being paid “more than they are worth”. Meanwhile, good, hard working people who are struggling to get by can’t even get paid for working hard, not just with wages, but with the shot at being upwardly mobile and working their way to the middle, getting some sort of retirement together, having decent healthcare, etc. I want to punch people in the head over not getting this

“…In February, during three days of meetings in Southern California, a CNP member named Rachel Bovard described the Conservative Action Project’s influence in helping the Trump administration select political appointees for the executive branch. She said the Conservative Action Project coordinated closely on these and other efforts with CNP members and the Conservative Partnership Institute, a tax-exempt charity run by former senator and tea party leader Jim DeMint of South Carolina.

“We work very closely — CAP does and then we at CPI also — with the Office of Presidential Personnel at the White House to try and get good conservatives in the positions because we see what happens when we don’t vet these people,” she said.

Bovard cited as examples two figures who testified against Trump last year in the House impeachment hearings: Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, former director for European affairs at the National Security Council, and Marie Yovanovitch, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine.

“All these people that led the impeachment against President Trump shouldn’t have been there in the first place,” Bovard told the CNP audience. “We want to prevent that from happening.”

They want to make sure they get people who wont tell the truth.

but that freedom to petition for the redress of grievances is a damned important one.

They have plenty of experience. Remember, for example:

1. The eighty billion votes to repeal Obamacare
2. The endless Benghazi investigations (Hunter Biden will be the target now)
3. Gaming the Senate rules to prevent Obama from making recess appointments
4. And oh yeah, SITTING ON THEIR FUCKING ASSES with regards to Merrick Garland.

“A car crash between Nicholas Sparks and Mein Kampf”: in the tangled world of far-right chat rooms, white supremacists are getting organized.

Writer Talia Lavin spent about a year catfishing white supremacists online. The result: personal trauma, predictions of a “bloody” election season, and the realization that many extremists aren’t holed up in basements—they’re bit players in our daily lives.

An interview by Maham Hasan, Vanity Fair.

again, this is not Constitutionally Protected Speech.

Just ask Amy, she can tell you (once she checks her notes) that “CONGRESS shall make no law abridging…freedom of speech…”

i.e., they cannot punish you or forbid you from speaking your mind (within reasonable limits)

This does not apply to privately-owned companies. Anti-discrimination laws prevent them from denying you access to their platform outright based on your race, religion, gender or sexual orientation, but that does not apply to political utterances or other such statements that they deem to violate their standards and terms of service.

Dropped off my ballot today at one of the county drop boxes.

Continued my informal and unscientific political sign survey.

20+ Biden/Harris signs plus those for the other Democrats running for office in this county for state and federal offices.

One lawn with Trump/Pence signs. Including a “Jesus 2020” sign.

Two lawns with just a sign for the Republican running for a state assembly seat. This was the same one I don’t recall seeing on the ballot but I looked up the name and a site said she was on the ballot. (And the web site based on her name, which they apparently were smart enough to purchase, for some reason completely fails to indicate her party affiliation.)

Voted yesterday in far North Dallas. Just a few observations while waiting in the 45-minute queue:

There was a distinct disconnect between the election signage surrounding the polling place (which was massively over-represented by Republicans - at least a 10:1 ratio) and those people in line - who I would classify as “Leans Democratic”, due to the number of women and people of color waiting in line.

Of course, there was the one MAGAt who showed up wearing a Donald Trump shirt emblazoned with a rather racist antithesis to the “Black Lives Matter” slogan, red MAGA baseball cap, and no mask until he got right up to the building. Unfortunately, the poll-workers there let him thru.

I could write a whole other section on the new voting machines they have at the place I voted - very upper-middle class neighborhood, and how superior they are to the ones that are used in less-wealthy (and less white) parts of town.

Agreed. I live in a state that has a mandatory waiting period. It’s a serious roadblock for women.

The only remaining Abortion clinic in MS is in Jackson, which is just short of a three hour drive from where I am. So if a woman from this city wants an abortion, she has travel three hours to Jackson, find a place to stay for two days while there because of the mandatory waiting period (or drive three hours back and then three hours up and back two days later) before she can get the procedure done.

And this is assuming she has access to transportation to get up there and enough time off work to accommodate all this, not to mention money to cover gas, food and other necessary expenses.

My state even passed one of those stupid “admitting privileges” laws which would have closed the Jackson clinic and, in the words of our idiot governor “Make Mississippi abortion free”, but it was struck down by a Judge at the 11th hour so the Jackson clinic has stayed open for the time being.

re: #139 Yeah Sure WhatEVs

Are they still hackable?

I will say that they do have safeguards against it because it is a 3 step process.

1. Get your blank ballot - about a 18” x 2” strip, with your name and voter ID printed across the top, and scanning barcode - all of this printed when you signed in with the poll worker.

2. Insert the blank ballot into electronic voting machine. Each screen has one entry for each item voted on, and allows the user to go back at any time, or completely cancel and start over. Once voting is completed, it prints onscreen each of the items voted on, and your vote for validation. If there is a correction that you want to make, it can be done from here. Once all of this is completed and validated, you then print the actual ballot out, with each person (or other measure) voted for printed in full, with another barcode next to each. This provides an actual paper audit trail.

3. Take the printed completed ballot to a secure GUARDED scanning machine where you insert for tabulation.

There may be post-voting hacking available to this, but the printed ballots mean they can easily rescan for auditing/recounts

It won’t be open much longer. Roe will, if not reversed, be eviscerated soon, probably 2022 is my guess. And then the drive for many women in the South and West will be a whole lot longer than 3 hours.

Booker asks Barrett if she thinks it’s wrong to separate children from their parents

Barrett: “That’s a matter of hot political debate that I can’t express a view or be drawn into as a judge”

Booker: “These are basic questions of human rights.”

The Federalist Society grooms its nominations well — to refuse to answer any question because if they answer one, it would a precedent for their having to address other issues. Moscow Mitch has achieved his lifetime objective into turning much of judiciary into a Fascist racist anti-voting rights anti health care totalitarians who will never stand up for civil rights, the individual, or the Constitution. They will endorse anything Trump says and reject anything a Biden administration promotes.

One other thing about the refusal to address issues: about 14 years ago, a colleague of mine decided to run for Congress in the Democratic primary. I challenged him because it didn’t seem to me that he had a thorough grasp of the many issues he would confront as a Congressman. He presented a non-answer answer that he thought would serve to respond to audience questions during the first debate (there were maybe 6 people running). It is certainly possible that the Federalist approach is also designed to mask the ignorance of the nominee on critical issues they are likely to confront.

Maybe some Senator should ask Barrett, who proclaims herself an originalist, to explain how Justice Taney, who also described himself as an originalist, was correct in his reasoning in the Dredd Scott decision.

This may actually be a bigger deal than it may seem, since IIRC, Georgia has a “majority” requirement (50% +1?) for election winners, otherwise there is a runoff in (? 60 days?): it is virtually certain that there will be a runoff for the “B” race (Loeffler’s seat) given the “jungle” ballot, but the dynamics may change if just the one seat is up.

One thing to remember about these kinds of sampling methods is that the uncertainty is rather large. “+7” is just the peak of the distribution of the possible values.

“With less than three weeks to go before Nov. 3, more than 14 million Americans have already voted in the fall election, reflecting an extraordinary level of participation despite barriers erected by the coronavirus pandemic — and setting a trajectory that could result in the majority of voters casting ballots before Election Day for the first time in U.S. history,” the Washington Post reports.

“The picture is so stark that election officials around the country are reporting record early turnout, much of it in person, meaning that more results could be available on election night than previously thought.

“So far, much of the early voting appears to be driven by heightened enthusiasm among Democrats. Of the roughly 3.5 million voters who have cast ballots in six states that provide partisan breakdowns, registered Democrats outnumber Republicans by roughly 2 to 1, according to a Washington Post analysis of data in Florida, Iowa, Maine, Kentucky, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.”

Those are the words written 250 years ago. “Well-regulated” back then meant “well-equipped”, nothing to do with state or local control of militias. Words change, “terrific” no longer means “inspires terror” for example.

The other thing is that the first and second clauses of the Second Amendment are explanations but not qualifications for the third clause which is the right accorded to all citizens (but not black field slaves and sex toys, Native Americans, Frenchmen, women, Chinese, Irish etc.). Even if times change and the first two clauses become untrue their invalidity doesn’t negate the third clause’s grant of the Amendment’s absolute personal right to keep and bear arms.

Not from the NYT and not from today (hey, Trumpsters can’t get ALL their facts straight//) but—and note that it’s all trump administration peeps talking.

From 10/9:
A Trump administration official leading the response to the coronavirus pandemic says the U.S. can expect delivery of a vaccine starting in January 2021, despite statements from the president that inoculations could begin this month…

Dr. Robert Kadlec said in an email Friday that the administration “is accelerating production of safe and effective vaccines … to ensure delivery starting January 2021.” Kadlec is the Department of Health and Human Services’ assistant secretary of preparedness and response. HHS says a vaccine could be approved before the end of the year but will take time to distribute.

You raise an interesting question. One that I honestly do not know enough to fully answer (to me).

In terms of current meaning, where “well-regulated” means under state/government organization and discipline. I fully agree with you.

In terms of what the writers fully meant. I do not yet know how, when, or even _if_ they disentangled the philosophy and concept of militia as representatives of the King/Loyalist Government versus that of the Revolutionary/Patriot Govt versus representing other interests.

One thing to consider was that the major experience prior to the American Revolutionary War was in the response to raids by Native Americans and by French combatants coming from Canada.

The organization, rapidity and effectiveness of the Massachusetts’ response at Lexington and Concord was because of experiences against those raids.

Understanding that any conflict is basically a series of screw-ups on both sides. And that even the side that screws up less still often loses. The only certainty is that people usually get hurt in these things.

“In Arizona as elsewhere, Trump’s handling of the pandemic — even prior to his diagnosis — is proving costly, leaving him struggling to match his 2016 performance among those over the age of 65. I am intrigued by that Indiana polling. It’s a state I know (too) well, and I’ve been eager to see polling.

Yes, it has some amazingly red areas. Yes, it swung brutally to Trump in 2016. But remember it actually went Obama at least once, too.

It has always seemed to me that the story of Indiana is all about who turns out where. Much like South Carolina, you need Black turnout in high numbers for Democrats to win Indiana. They’re concentrated in northwest Indiana (the Chicago suburbs) and in Indianapolis. If they show up like they did in 2008 and 2012, Trump at least doesn’t take Indiana in a landslide. And with polling as thin as it’s been there… I don’t think you’d be wrong to dream even bigger.

Remember, there’s no love for Pence in his homeland. He was about to lose renomination as governor when he was plucked out of that race to run for VP. Holcomb, the current GOP governor, isn’t widely popular either, especially as the state’s COVID numbers have turned ridiculously bad.

Even the suburban strongholds that did so well for Trump in 2016 - think Hamilton County, the rich white suburbs north of Indianapolis - have the potential for surprises. As poorly as Trump is performing with college-educated white women, that could be very bad news for him in places like Hamilton County, which are fairly upscale and educated as red hotspots go.

I’d love to see more polling.

You raise an interesting question. One that I honestly do not know enough to fully answer (to me).

In terms of current meaning, where “well-regulated” means under state/government organization and discipline. I fully agree with you.

The best thing I have found to understand the founders intent are the first to Militia Acts of 1792.

mountvernon.org

Reading that text is tedious but rewarding. It specifies exactly what was expected - and frankly the requirement that all members of the militia buy a military caliber musket and maintain it when it was not an especially good hunting arm tells me that they probably would have required ownership of an AR had they existed then.

An effective fighting force NEEDS to have proper training and discipline to be, you know, effective. Even if the founders didn’t explicitly state this in the Amendment it’s kind of a given that its intent was to have a functional militia available to supplement the standing Army if necessary.

re: #245 Jay C

The problem is that the “magic words” in the Constitution have to be twisted almost out of recognition to enable a working Government and institutions in the twenty-first century. The Commerce Clause, for example is used to permit and enable a shitload of necessary legislation the Founders never envisaged the country would need when they set America’s future in stone, and as for the Fourth Amendment, what can I say? Is there any part of the American way of life that it doesn’t impact on a daily basis?

Sitting here in a country that doesn’t have a written constitution[1], never mind one made Holy by capital letters reminiscent of an illuminated medieval manuscript I can only kvetch from the sidelines but (heresy!) it might be better for you guys to lose a war, get invaded and conquered and have a constitution suitable for today’s real world imposed on you by your ‘liberators’. It’s kind of embarrassing that countries like Japan and Germany have a more modern world outlook and political system than you do, after all.

[1] We do have a constitution here in the UKoGBaNI, sort of. It’s a lot of good ideas flying in close formation rather than a 200-hundred year old ball-and-chain though.

I spent many years in Indiana. First teaching in Tippecanoe County, then (too long) as a grad student in Bloomington. I kind of lost my faith in Indiana when they turned on Richard Luger. He was a good man who had no problem working with Dems on common goals. Still, I guess the thing to do is check on Vigo County.

Replace. Not supplement. The founding fathers based on their experiences in the English Civil War and the American Revolutionary War feared and hated the idea of a standing Army. The militia was supposed to be instead of a regular army.

However every time the militia was called up, with the exception of Black Hawk’s War (a murderous rampage by the militias) and possibly the Mexican-American War, they were an utter failure and only the Regulars saved the Republic in 1812 & the Civil War.

Key things to know about election polling in the United States

[…]

The real margin of error is often about double the one reported. The notion that a typical margin of error is plus or minus 3 percentage points leads people to think that polls are more precise than they really are. Why is that? For starters, the margin of error addresses only one source of potential error: the fact that random samples are likely to differ a little from the population just by chance. But there are three other, equally important sources of error in polling: nonresponse, coverage error (where not all the target population has a chance of being sampled) and mismeasurement. Not only does the margin of error fail to account for those other sources of potential error, it implies to the public that they do not exist, which is not true.

Several recent studies show that the average error in a poll estimate may be closer to 6 percentage points, not the 3 points implied by a typical margin of error. While polls remain useful in showing whether the public tends to favor or oppose key policies, this hidden error underscores the fact that polls are not precise enough to call the winner in a close election.

[…]

As worthwhile as that Pew article is for reading, even it does not go far enough in explaining what is, and is not, happening.

Probability, measurement statistics, and predictions are all different things. This though is often too complex a topic for an quick internet read.

re: #270 dangerman

Mac Isaac appeared nervous throughout. Several times, he said he was scared for his life and for the lives of those he loved. He appeared not to have a grasp on the timeline of the laptop arriving at his shop and its disappearance from it. He also said the impeachment of President Trump was a “sham.” Social media postings indicate that Mac Isaac is an avid Trump supporter, and voted for him in the 2016 election.

Mac Isaac said he had a medical condition that prevented him from actually seeing who dropped off the laptop but that he believed it to be Hunter Biden’s because of a sticker related to the Beau Biden Foundation that was on it. He said that Hunter Biden actually dropped off three laptops for repair, an abundance of hardware that he chalked up to the Biden son being “rich.”

[SNIP]

Mac Isaac referenced the infamous Seth Rich conspiracy theory—which holds that a DNC staffer who police say was murdered in a botched robbery was actually killed off by Clinton allies because he leaked committee emails—as reason for his paranoia. He said he made a copy of the hard drive for purposes of personal protection.

Yep, this guy seems like a totally credible person.

That is the National Guard. The 2d Amendment only applied to the federal government until the 21st Century, when all of a sudden SCOTUS decided there was an individual right which the states had to respect. That should be reversed, but probably never will.

Covid has hit SEC football. The Florida Gator head coach had been demanding that the University pack 90,000 people into the Stadium Saturday because Governor DeathSantis authorized it. But now 19 Florida players have tested positive so the game is postponed. Nick Saban of Alabama has also tested positive and is in quarantine.

A requirement that they own and maintain a particular type of weapon sounds to me like the founders had no problem with regulating (in the modern sense of the word) the ownership and use of firearms. E.g. the right of The People to have an armed militia shall not be infringed, but the government IS free to write and enforce laws regarding an individuals ownership and use of firearms.

but, But, BUT!! “Originalists” should insist on original intent, which would be the military caliber musket. As ACB insists, the Constitution is NOT an evolving document.

re: #232 Jebediah, RBG

Was “the people” not a plural noun back then? As opposed to “any person’s” right as an individual?
I also thought that back then, militia meant an organized group sanctioned by the government, but I am neither linguist nor historian.

You are right. At the time the Constitution was written, there was a distrust of professional standing armies (one of the lessons of the Revolution). The militia system was intended to take the place of a standing army. Property owning citizen-soldiers were thought to have an interest in defining the nation (ie, their property). All men were expected to participation in the militia and would be fined if they skipped muster. Most of the time spent debating that amendment centered around determining who could skip militia duty because of religious or conscientious objectors.

It’s always gifted kids, one with special needs to prove they wouldn’t abort anything no matter what level of defective, and adopted kids to save and convert. I see this over and over and over with the religious zealots.

I’m not saying people should abort Down Syndrome or special needs children, I’m saying these types would keep a deformed lump of doomed braindead flesh alive with tubes (and prayer! because “God doesn’t make no junk”) before they would consider abortion, and they almost always have at least one in their herd.

As with the stereotypical fetus that becomes a baby, they don’t treat the disabled any better when they grow up. The way that fundies fetishize babies and “poor crippled babies” is just for show. Autistic children just get daddy’s belt, if they’re lucky.
