Following up from downstairs, I remembered the one other time the militia was called up and it wasn’t a disaster: the suppression of the Whiskey Rebellion. The most amusing thing about that one was that George Washington commanded the militia, the only time a sitting president has taken to the field.

It is also the divergent point in one of L. Neil Smith’s libertarian screeds masquerading as novels. Washington was executed by the heroic tax protesters… barf.

I seem to recall that the Continental Army was greatly shored up by professional French military, such as the Marquis de Lafayette and others. But yeah, professionalism was generally lacking among the volunteers.

His opinion of the militias in general was very low. Even through the 1800s, the state militias tended to be little better than military police units: Draft-dodging was widespread among the ranks of able-bodied men, while many volunteers would refuse to leave the boundaries of their home states. Most of those who showed up did so with the minimum required under the Militia Act, expecting that things like provisions, uniforms, and munitions would be provided for them. Most officers were so poorly trained that they were next to useless, having received the jobs either through nepotism. And training among the whole lot was poor that weeks or months would end up wasted just getting them to march in formation properly.

The militia fled in panic almost at the first shot, leaving the regulars out-numbered and out-flanked. The British duly advanced to the national capital, burned the White House and various other public buildings and withdrew back to their fleet. The incident led to a famous quip by British officer George Gleig “Never did men with arms in their hands make better use of their legs.”

The tendency of the militia to cut and run was so well-known on both sides that the Continental Army was actually able to exploit it at the Battle of Cowpens, getting the Redcoats to march right into an ambush by having the militia fire two volleys and then appear to retreat.

The Civil War reinforced the idea that a professional standing army was a good one in light of the early failures of the war by the Union and the losses by the Confederates in the latter half. And the Spanish-American War basically sealed the deal by showing that relying upon the states to properly arm and train their own militia might save money in peace-time but it meant huge expenditures when war were declared.

Studies of the Civil War also revolutionized the training of professional soldiers, as it was realized that the masses of volunteers would very rarely fire their shots. It is a testament to the deadliness of the technology, the primitiveness of the medical profession, and the pigheaded stupidity of the military tactics that the war was as deadly as it was.

And even then, Washington had to deal with draft-dodging and riots, towns in the states under rebellion raising liberty poles in open defiance of the federal government, and even state and local officials refusing to obey direct orders. Hell, the existence of Vermont as an independent state has a lot to do with the local officials harboring rebels in defiance of New York’s efforts to support the newly-formed federal government.

Scientists discover the unique signature of a lion’s roar using machine learning

With the data collected by the biologgers, the scientists trained a pattern recognition algorithm to “learn” each individual’s roars and then tested the algorithm on sequences that it had not seen before to determine whether the shape of the contour as a whole is an important distinguishing feature.

Results, published in Bioacoustics, reveal that it is possible to classify roars according to individual identity with 91.5% accuracy. These findings suggest that the overall shape of the fundamental frequency (f0) of the full-throated roar contour is consistent within each individuals’ roars and sufficiently different from other individuals to allow for accurate classification of individual identity.

Previous research has shown that lions can recognise the calls of other individuals, allowing them to locate distant companions and also to avoid potentially hostile neighbours. But little has been understood about how individuals convey identity information in the structure of their calls.

These new findings reveal a possible mechanism for individual vocal recognition amongst African lions. They indicate that individual lions may be able to learn the subtle variations in the fundamental frequency of other lions’ roars and thereby associate particular variations with particular identities.

This is actually becoming quite interesting on both Georgia Senate races. Ossoff up by 6 is a nice surprise - they had been running almost neck-and-neck for the past month.

The other (and the one I am REALLY intrigued by) is Warnock has pulled even with the COMBINED totals of Loeffler and Collins. Earlier in the year, Lieberman and Warnock were very close, and because of it both Democrats were in danger of losing out on making it to the runoff. With Lieberman falling off the map almost completely, it’s more a question on who Warnock will be facing in January, and I can guarantee that both the Democrats and Republicans are going to turn that into the most expensive runoff election ever.

Just had what I thought was a cardiac episode. Intense pressure in the chest, some burning, no pain in the extremities. BP 165/100. I took a nitro tab and some aspirin, and it is much better now. 134/82. The farm manager and his wife are here, God bless them, and they will sit with me for a while to make sure it doesn’t recur.
This has me thinking again that I should perhaps move to town to be closer to emergency care but the advantage may be illusory. We can get to the Weatherford ER pretty fast down I-20 and a chopper can land right in the front yard here if it comes to that. Try that in the ‘burbs.

As someone with a husband who has 11 stents in his heart at age 54, please don’t wait. The last time my husband had a heart issue he died 3 times in less than 24 hours, once while I was holding his hand and trying to explain to him why he was in the hospital. Once in the ambulance while it was sitting in the driveway and then again in the ER before I could get there. He was on a ventilator in a medically induced coma for 5 days and not expected to live. He did, but he will never be the same physically.

Just go see a doctor, even if you feel better. Please?

Apalachicola Florida used to have a thriving oyster industry. Now closed due to drought and low flow in the river by the same name, drained by Atlanta, primarily.
