There’s no way she’s going to enjoy that level of “access” in a Biden/Harris admin, and her NYT badge means the hard-right assholes that stand atop the smoking remains of the GOP are going to be suspicious of her if not outright hostile.

I think this is a good point.

The shell shock from 2016 is palpable. But the motivation that Democrats (and some Republicans and unaffiliated) have to send Fuckface packing is pretty fierce. 2018 was a damn good bellwether and people are taking this shit very seriously. We’re bringing this home, all we need to do is make sure people vote. I’ve personally made sure five people (from work and *ahem* court) are registered and have a plan to vote.

He’s never had to worry about getting a positive pregnancy test and then wondering, “What next?” I never had kids, but I did have the experience (twice) of waiting for pregnancy test results. I’ve told the story before, but the first pregnancy test was done by an anti-abortion nurse, who told me I was not pregnant but called me a slut and lectured me. I was 16 and I’d had sex exactly once. This is one reason why I get completely heated about anti-abortion people, because pretty much to a person, they are that kind of shitheel.

I’m not sure it’s shell shock anymore. Too many folks who I spent 2017-2019 listening to about how Trump was likely going to win another term and we needed to start preparing have turned their attitudes around for me to believe that the majority of the voices we hear now going “Trump can still win!” are people dealing with night sweats brought on by memories of Election Night 2016.

PCs were meh till the 386 and Unix was available. Windog was windog then just like now.

One of the strategies that the House Leadership is working on right now, is to ensure that the House Dems control the house contingents of at least 26 states. This is in case the GOP tries to throw the election into the House.

My first computer? A Hewlett Packard (model escapes me) with a 386 running PC-DOS. There are days when I wish I still owned that beast, if only because trying to emulate old DOS games is such a pain these days. Even with DOSBox, trying to run those old games on modern PCs can be a nightmare at times.

Believe it or not, there’s a company that sells clones of the 8800 that are not only operational, but you can actually use the case (mostly empty space) to conceal a modern PC. A little pricey if you just want it for something to display, but if you’re looking for a neat PC case it’s better than some monstrosity decked out with LEDs and fans big enough to lift a helicarrier.

You guys will like this story.

I’ve started jogging/walking at least 5 miles a day to try and get my ass in better shape.

Fortunately there is a small neighborhood near where I live that is great for racking up miles. On Monday I passed a house on the corner of an intersection that had 8 Biden signs in the yard (4 on each side that faced a road).

When I passed the same house on Tuesday there were only two signs.

When I passed by today there eight again, one of which was marked like this (embiggen to get full effect)

I really hope I see the property owner outside on one of my runs soon so I can give him kudos for this.

I’m not sure if the management would agree, but I can’t believe how laughably similar “Burismagate” became today to “Memogate”:

- “Incriminating” documents received from an unidentifiable “source”

- Guy of…questionable legitimacy who was relied upon to launder the docs that insists the “source” is totally legit because…well, fuck you, that’s why.

- What we’re provided with are copies of the original docs, with the originals unavailable for analysis

- The docs were provided to an outlet with a known and strong bias that is totally willing to publish them without the least bit of deeper research.

- Everybody involved in the whole “chain of custody” is crooked as fuck and/or connected to past efforts to publish similar “scandals.”

- The docs themselves are under scrutiny as possible forgeries based upon simple visual analysis.

Trump sometimes vaguely adds that Mexico will be paying for the wall through a “tax,” “charge” or “toll” he will impose “soon” on cars crossing the border. Nobody appears to know what he’s talking about.

A tax like a tariff that is levied on a foreign country but paid by US consumers?

He has not even sorted out the mechanism of how “Mexico will pay for the Wall”. Much less has he convened a planning commission, produced design and engineering studies, ordered environmental and legal impact statements for the regions involved, or given us any sort of budget or timetable.

It is clear to all but the blindest supporters that The Wall is just a talking point and a symbol.

China and Washington are on especially shaky ground due to disagreements over Taiwan and the coronavirus pandemic. The White House recently announced it was planning to move ahead with the sale of three advanced weapon systems to Taiwan, bringing the US even closer, diplomatically, with the island country. Since China considers Taiwan a part of its territory, the weapons deal has definitely raised their hackles.

Blood type may affect severity of COVID-19 infection, new study suggests

In a new study published Wednesday, researchers in Canada found that, among 95 critically ill COVID-19 patients, 84 percent of those with the blood types A and AB required mechanical ventilation compared to 61 percent of patients with type O or type B, CNN reports. The former group also remained in the intensive care unit for a median of 13.5 days, while the latter’s median stay was nine days.

It’s still unclear what may be behind the possible distinction; Sekhon said one explanation could be that people with blood type O are less prone to blood clotting, which can often lead to more severe cases.

Either way, Sekhon doesn’t believe blood type will supersede other “risk factors of severity” like age or comorbidities, and he said people should not behave differently based on their group. “If one is blood group A, you don’t need to start panicking,” he said. “And if you’re blood group O, you’re not free to go to the pubs and bars.”

Between minor deferred medical appointments and growing political action, Wife and I are surfacing from a renewed fogey lockdown. Yesterday was the first time I’ve been inside a store since March. The store, one of the Evil Big Warehouse chain, was not very CV-ready—good masking, cart wipedown, no one-way aisles, no shields. They still are limiting TP and paper towels to 1 large package. When I asked the cashier if we weren’t getting beyond that, she said to expect it into 2021 and the the Evil Big company had told the employees to expect to be wearing masks for another year.

Good morning, assembled Lizard host! I’m back at home after my visit to the ER. There is no evidence of a heart attack but I did have a pretty serious blood pressure event. My cardiologist has ordered the proverbial “more tests” to determine just what is going on, since I take BP meds and my weight is down to nominally healthy levels. I met some nice folks, including an RN from New Zealand. He was delighted that I recognized his accent and knew the difference between NZ and Oz. He also said that folks at home address him like they would a soldier in a war zone when they write. “Be careful!” “Must be horribly dangerous” “Stay safe,” that sort of thing. I don’t think they’re wrong. I see the local nutjobs less like I would an enemy force and more like I would a pack of dangerous animals. Be aware, take some precautions, but also realize that you are dealing with instinctive rather than rationally determined impulses.

Interesting thread and article. What it boils down to is that Parscale’s reelection campaign for Trump from the beginning was to use social media to activate politically apathetic non-college educated whites through interests that connected them to similar voters such as hunting, NASCAR, etc. So Trump’s primary hope for reelection is that the polls are wrong because they are missing people who don’t fit the likely voter profiles in their models since they weren’t registered and didn’t vote in the past. And there has been a recent GOP registration edge in battleground states. Pinning your hopes on nonvoters is a risky strategy, but when Trump is your candidate, its the only one you’ve got; because all the voters have already made their minds up.

I can’t read twitter threads at work, but I don’t see Democrats being complacent, and that same criteria - the polls are wrong because they are missing people who don’t fit the likely voter profiles in their models - would tend to miss college students and a lot of people who have been motivated by Taylor Swift.

The worries are why Democrats are turning out like they are for early voting.

What’s this 64K of ram of which you speak? I had a Vic 20, all of 5K. The book that came with it had a basic program that made a tank that would shoot at a UFO flying overhead. After typing that in a couple of times, I modified it to have multiple UFOs at once.

Good morning, assembled Lizard host! I’m back at home after my visit to the ER. There is no evidence of a heart attack but I did have a pretty serious blood pressure event. My cardiologist has ordered the proverbial “more tests” to determine just what is going on, since I take BP meds and my weight is down to nominally healthy levels. I met some nice folks, including an RN from New Zealand. He was delighted that I recognized his accent and knew the difference between NZ and Oz. He also said that folks at home address him like they would a soldier in a war zone when they write. “Be careful!” “Must be horribly dangerous” “Stay safe,” that sort of thing. I don’t think they’re wrong. I see the local nutjobs less like I would an enemy force and more like I would a pack of dangerous animals. Be aware, take some precautions, but also realize that you are dealing with instinctive rather than rationally determined impulses.

You have but to ask: here’s a rundown from the WaPo (caution, possible paywall issue)- the laptops (three, reportedly) were brought into what seems to be a small shop in Wilmington (DE) owned by one John Paul MacIsaac. Mac is variously described as “legally blind” and “vison-impaired”, btw, which makes his supposed ID of “Hunter Biden” as the guy who dropped off (and never retrieved) the laptops just a tad suspect….

I can’t read twitter threads at work, but I don’t see Democrats being complacent, and that same criteria - the polls are wrong because they are missing people who don’t fit the likely voter profiles in their models - would tend to miss college students and a lot of people who have been motivated by Taylor Swift.

The worries are why Democrats are turning out like they are for early voting.

It’s always a turning point. Maybe my problem is that I know too many well-educated or successful people who are dedicated Trumpsters and am still suffering PTSD from our 2016 experience.

I signed up this week to voteforward.org to do additional writing to help out. It does require a printer. The targeted voter list they sent me were for Texas. The letters are all supposed to be sent by Saturday but there probably won’t be an issue if they are mailed a few days later. I feel very guilty for not being more actively involved for this campaign.

As someone who spent over 45 years in programming actuarial software systems, I can understand how Birx, who doesn’t develop software, could be frustrated by the limitations of existing systems and be persuaded by the siren song from an outside vendor that they can magically create a package that does everything she wants.

She never learned that the initial releases of any new software (let’s remember the 2010 ACA release that led to the calamitous GOP takeover of the House and the loss of Senate seats that year) are full of bugs and unforeseen limitations that can wreak havoc. Unfortunately given the urgent nature of the disaster we are living through, there isn’t time to implement all the corrections needed to get things working (assuming that the vendor has staff that can actually implement the changes and the system is sufficiently flexible to accommodate them— that’s not always true)

I recorded several episodes of the NPR wiring of the radio series off-air as a teen. When I got married, one of my gifts was a set of of off-air recordings of the original Radio Four broadcasts a British colleague of a college friend had made way back when.

Comparing the two, the NPR broadcasts were slightly edited, I think along the lines of the edits noted in the book compiling the radio scripts released ca. 1985 (and re-released ca. 1995), but it has been decades since I did the comparison.

That may be true but a good friend from Wisconsin was ranting yesterday how Biden’s failure to show up in Wisconsin to accept the nomination really hurt him with voters there; she was pleased with his (and Kamala’s) subsequent trips, but reiterated that Wisconsin voters interpreted his change in venue as a lack of respect for their state. Little things like that do matter especially to older voters who are not as wired as we are.

What it boils down to is that Parscale’s reelection campaign for Trump from the beginning was to use social media to activate politically apathetic non-college educated whites through interests that connected them to similar voters such as hunting, NASCAR, etc. So Trump’s primary hope for reelection is that the polls are wrong because they are missing people who don’t fit the likely voter profiles in their models since they weren’t registered and didn’t vote in the past. And there has been a recent GOP registration edge in battleground states. Pinning your hopes on nonvoters is a risky strategy, but when Trump is your candidate, its the only one you’ve got; because all the voters have already made their minds up.

I’m going to throw out a wild theory here:

So yesterday morning I saw a chart showing something like 20k shares/relinks/whatever for the Hunter Biden smear on Facebook (I don’t Facebook, I don’t know the terms) and only a small number on Twitter and some other social media services. This was early morning, before Twitter rather obviously started blocking it, so the obvious reading was that someone botted an amplified distribution on Facebook.

So… what if that was tried on Twitter too - and their monitoring of obvious russian bots saw that this was getting a too-well-timed push there as well, and their recently-more-aggressive moderation team just said “nope” to the whole thing. Then took the link to the exec team, said “here’s the russian spam of the day” and they did a cursory look at its provenance and decided to treat it with the respect it deserves.

That’s what realistic, responsible wide social media moderation can look like. NO ONE IS READING ALL THE MESSAGES - no company can afford to do that. But they can see large trends coming and quickly apply wide filters if given the authority to do so.

Twitter takes a lot of shit, and there are people gaming its system on both sides, but generally speaking I’ve felt they’ve acted responsibly. Facebook has been in bed with the right by comparison, Youtube has an algorithm problem.

i know im in a minority - i dont see those cases as legislating from the bench so much as recognizing human immutable truths.

i see them as recognizing that human rights do in fact exist and are intrinsic, though their exercise may have been repressed by others. No one is ‘granted’ extra or new human rights.

What happens is the courts stop government(s) from continuing to repress natural rights. They are allowing people to exercise rights they always had though were unable to exercise because they were actively repressed, or in many cases went unquestioned/unrecognized until they became ripe/salient/obvious.

the civil rights act didnt grant new rights. those rights were always there.

imo same with Loving, Griswold, Roe, etc

Bob Bauer, the White House counsel from 2009 to 2011, is a professor at New York University Law School on leave this fall to work as a senior adviser on Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. Jack Goldsmith, a professor at Harvard Law School and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, was head of the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel from 2003 to 2004. They co-authored the book “After Trump: Reconstructing the Presidency.”

1. The next administration will immediately face the fraught question of whether and how to investigate and, if warranted, prosecute possible crimes Trump committed while in office. If such an investigation of an ex-president occurs, it should take place pursuant to a transparent process supervised by the attorney general. The investigation and prosecution should be conducted by a special counsel. A former president seeking clemency should have to apply for it, and the application should not be considered until any charges have been filed. The process should include analysis by the attorney general and consultation with Congress.

2. Clarify statutes on how obstruction of justice applies to the president.

3. Reform the pardon power: specifically Bribery (see Roger Stone).

4. Reform special counsel regulations: limits on authority to collect information; ensure reports are publicly reported.

5. Justice Dept. needs reform of internal rules “to clarify obstruction-of-justice statutes apply” to partisan actions.

6. Justice Dept. needs reform of rules such as the Durham investigation: should be done by independent IG rather than in house. If crimes are discovered, they should be pursued by a special counsel.

All of these struck me as healthy steps!

2. Clarify statutes on how obstruction of justice applies to the president.

3. Reform the pardon power: specifically Bribery (see Roger Stone).

4. Reform special counsel regulations: limits on authority to collect information; ensure reports are publicly reported.

5. Justice Dept. needs reform of internal rules “to clarify obstruction-of-justice statutes apply” to partisan actions.

6. Justice Dept. needs reform of rules such as the Durham investigation: should be done by independent IG rather than in house. If crimes are discovered, they should be pursued by a special counsel.

All of these struck me as healthy steps!

I’d add something about abuse of power. Apparently there’s no legislation directly aimed at abuses like BridgeGate. The prosecution had to rely on legislation directed at financial fraud (i.e. stealing money), which was never a good fit. There needs to be something directly targeting abuse of power for political purposes, which is the modern Putin-esque authoritarian tool.

I’ve never heard it before but it checks out. I know it’s hope for the best/prepare for the worst but it certainly is demoralizing and it makes it hard to create enthusiasm when we could be looking at the biggest presidential win for a Democratic presidential nominee since LBJ but you’d never know it because people are chicken littles after 2016 while ignoring gains in the years since. I get 2016 trauma. I still have it myself but I’m also encouraged that the country is going to send Trump home to wait for many days in court.

I’d guess that if the 117th Congress (both Dem-controlled Houses) are going to pass a stimulus bill at all, they’ll get the details worked out and finalized, and ready to send to the President ASAP. If that President is still Trump, he’d probably be likely to veto it just out of spite, so I imagine that (unfortunately) we are going to have to wait til 1/21.

BTW, is there a special term applicable to a Congressional session like the one we will have in 2021 (and had in 2017) where there is a brief “interregnum” between the start of a new Congress (Monday 1/4 next year), and the swearing-in of a new President/Administration?
The opposite of “lame-duck”??

It used to be worse. Up until FDR’s second term, presidents were not sworn in until March 4. That gave Congress a head start on legislation while also holding up the incoming cabinet. That’s why presidents were often regarded as merely chief clerks until the 20th century.

Historically, they are a lot closer than they used to be: until the 1930s, Election Day was early November, Inauguration Day was March 4, and Congress usually didn’t formally meet until December (!).

Started with an Atari 800XL, went to an Atari ST then on to a 386 based clone. I was coding in C and Fortran in DOS when Windows was all the way up to version 2.

Started with TRS-80 with 4K of RAM, then to an Apple IIc, then to the MCS system (primitive DTP), then to a PC-AT, then Coyote, then finally to a Zeos 386-25 that I installed a SoundBlaster and a 24/96 modem to connect to Prodigy and CompuServe.

… and there my troubles began …
