Music video by Bruce Hornsby performing Cyclone (Live - Bonnaroo Virtual ROO-ality). (C) 2020 Zappo Productions marketed and distributed by Thirty Tigers

Lyrics:

Most of our years have flown away with nothing much decided
Except the board we’re playing on, how it’s to be divided
Will more years yet die alone? The question’s many-sided
Got no answers of my own and none have been provided

When I was a boy there was nothing to know
The wind followed me wherever I’d go
Rain came down where I made my stand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand

There is a game that’s only played in a darkened room with strangers
Dealt down and dirty with unmarked cards eyes closed to dangers
Jealousy folds without playing its hold card, romance raises grinning
I spent several lifetimes there where I could not lose for winning

When I was a boy there was love for free
Glad to be given and received by me
Rain came down where I made my stand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand

I believe I can still make the cyclone rise
Just can’t see it so well, with my fading eyes
A mystery to myself not everything now I was born to be
All I know is when I wanted it so, the wind itself rose for me

You know, if it wasn’t for love
I might just be a wandering man
But believe I’ve made the better choice
To sing about it with this band

When I was a boy, I could summon the moon
With a crook of the finger and a home-made tune
I could ride the clouds when they sailed on by
And sing all the words to a wildcat’s cry

When I was a boy there was nothing to know
The wind followed me wherever I’d go
Rain came down where I made my stand
And the cyclone rose with a wave of my hand

I believe I can still make the cyclone rise
And the cyclone rose
Wave of my hand
Rain came down where I made my stand

Did anyone else watch the PA Dems’ Spinal Tap reunion tonight? It was fun watching the band back together. Hard to believe David St. Hubbins became Chuck McGill, though. Amazing how talented that group was.

Maggie’s worried that after Needi Amin is gone, she’ll have no meal ticket at the paper anymore. Her whole bit for the last four years was having an “in” on the palace intrigue circuit of the Trump admin. There’s no way she’s going to enjoy that level of “access” in a Biden/Harris admin, and her NYT badge means the hard-right assholes that stand atop the smoking remains of the GOP are going to be suspicious of her if not outright hostile.

By this time next year, she could very well find herself wandering the “Cletus Safari” circuit, hopelessly looking for some sign that her fortunes will change in 2022.

I think this is a good point.

The shell shock from 2016 is palpable. But the motivation that Democrats (and some Republicans and unaffiliated) have to send Fuckface packing is pretty fierce. 2018 was a damn good bellwether and people are taking this shit very seriously. We’re bringing this home, all we need to do is make sure people vote. I’ve personally made sure five people (from work and *ahem* court) are registered and have a plan to vote.

He’s never had to worry about getting a positive pregnancy test and then wondering, “What next?” I never had kids, but I did have the experience (twice) of waiting for pregnancy test results. I’ve told the story before, but the first pregnancy test was done by an anti-abortion nurse, who told me I was not pregnant but called me a slut and lectured me. I was 16 and I’d had sex exactly once. This is one reason why I get completely heated about anti-abortion people, because pretty much to a person, they are that kind of shitheel.

From an earlier linked Mother Jones article

It’s no surprise that the Murdochites would engage in such Trumpy reporting. The article was co-written by Emma-Jo Morris, a former segment producer at Fox News for host Sean Hannity and a former communications staffer for the Conservative Political Action Conference.

She is the Deputy Politics Editor at the New York Post. And yes the linked to twitter feed has pictures of her with Bannon, Stone, and a bunch of others from that community.

I’m not sure it’s shell shock anymore. Too many folks who I spent 2017-2019 listening to about how Trump was likely going to win another term and we needed to start preparing have turned their attitudes around for me to believe that the majority of the voices we hear now going “Trump can still win!” are people dealing with night sweats brought on by memories of Election Night 2016.

It might also be worth a quick look at the author of this Post article. The byline on the story is Emma-Jo Morris, who is listed on the masthead as Deputy Politics Editor at New York Post. Since when? Since today, that’s when. Morris has exactly three stories on her resume at the Post … all of them written on Wednesday. All of them about Hunter Biden. What did Morris do prior to her instant appointment as editor? She booked guests for Sean Hannity.

One of the strategies that the House Leadership is working on right now, is to ensure that the House Dems control the house contingents of at least 26 states. This is in case the GOP tries to throw the election into the House.

Believe it or not, there’s a company that sells clones of the 8800 that are not only operational, but you can actually use the case (mostly empty space) to conceal a modern PC. A little pricey if you just want it for something to display, but if you’re looking for a neat PC case it’s better than some monstrosity decked out with LEDs and fans big enough to lift a helicarrier.

You guys will like this story.

I’ve started jogging/walking at least 5 miles a day to try and get my ass in better shape.

Fortunately there is a small neighborhood near where I live that is great for racking up miles. On Monday I passed a house on the corner of an intersection that had 8 Biden signs in the yard (4 on each side that faced a road).

When I passed the same house on Tuesday there were only two signs.

When I passed by today there eight again, one of which was marked like this (embiggen to get full effect)

I really hope I see the property owner outside on one of my runs soon so I can give him kudos for this.

I’m not sure if the management would agree, but I can’t believe how laughably similar “Burismagate” became today to “Memogate”:

- “Incriminating” documents received from an unidentifiable “source”

- Guy of…questionable legitimacy who was relied upon to launder the docs that insists the “source” is totally legit because…well, fuck you, that’s why.

- What we’re provided with are copies of the original docs, with the originals unavailable for analysis

- The docs were provided to an outlet with a known and strong bias that is totally willing to publish them without the least bit of deeper research.

- Everybody involved in the whole “chain of custody” is crooked as fuck and/or connected to past efforts to publish similar “scandals.”

- The docs themselves are under scrutiny as possible forgeries based upon simple visual analysis.

Gets worse, to quote from the article,

“I think a trans person out in the middle of South Dakota might feel a little more comfortable out in Minneapolis,” he said. “There are places in America where if you are trans or bi or any variation… where you as an individual will feel more comfortable… This is why people from small towns have been moving to big cities for hundreds of years.”

These are also words that have been repeated again and again, usually to the same groups of people. If your state refuses to treat you like a regular human being, move to another one. Go to the city. Seek out liberal enclaves where you can at least expect to be benignly ignored, if not loved. Godspeed, teens.

Trump sometimes vaguely adds that Mexico will be paying for the wall through a “tax,” “charge” or “toll” he will impose “soon” on cars crossing the border. Nobody appears to know what he’s talking about.

A tax like a tariff that is levied on a foreign country but paid by US consumers?

He has not even sorted out the mechanism of how “Mexico will pay for the Wall”. Much less has he convened a planning commission, produced design and engineering studies, ordered environmental and legal impact statements for the regions involved, or given us any sort of budget or timetable.

It is clear to all but the blindest supporters that The Wall is just a talking point and a symbol.

A vast number of songs are standards for bands and performers to cover, and the renditions of some songs are so numerous that they can’t be practically tracked.

For the following warhorse of the past 65 years I prefer the early versions, here Belafonte recording a year after the song first made its presence on the pop market:

Unchained Melody by Harry Belafonte on 1956 RCA Victor LP.

Good morning! Lol what was in my CNN morning brief…

China’s President Xi Jinping has told troops to put their minds on “preparing for war.” He made the alarming comments during a visit to a military base in the southern province of Guangdong. China and Washington are on especially shaky ground due to disagreements over Taiwan and the coronavirus pandemic. The White House recently announced it was planning to move ahead with the sale of three advanced weapon systems to Taiwan, bringing the US even closer, diplomatically, with the island country. Since China considers Taiwan a part of its territory, the weapons deal has definitely raised their hackles.

I’ve been hearing this for months. Now there’s a study.

Blood type may affect severity of COVID-19 infection, new study suggests

In a new study published Wednesday, researchers in Canada found that, among 95 critically ill COVID-19 patients, 84 percent of those with the blood types A and AB required mechanical ventilation compared to 61 percent of patients with type O or type B, CNN reports. The former group also remained in the intensive care unit for a median of 13.5 days, while the latter’s median stay was nine days.

It’s still unclear what may be behind the possible distinction; Sekhon said one explanation could be that people with blood type O are less prone to blood clotting, which can often lead to more severe cases.

Either way, Sekhon doesn’t believe blood type will supersede other “risk factors of severity” like age or comorbidities, and he said people should not behave differently based on their group. “If one is blood group A, you don’t need to start panicking,” he said. “And if you’re blood group O, you’re not free to go to the pubs and bars.”

Between minor deferred medical appointments and growing political action, Wife and I are surfacing from a renewed fogey lockdown. Yesterday was the first time I’ve been inside a store since March. The store, one of the Evil Big Warehouse chain, was not very CV-ready—good masking, cart wipedown, no one-way aisles, no shields. They still are limiting TP and paper towels to 1 large package. When I asked the cashier if we weren’t getting beyond that, she said to expect it into 2021 and the the Evil Big company had told the employees to expect to be wearing masks for another year.

The Department of Justice was placed in the awkward position of having to argue that President Donald Trump was not telling the truth when he told his supporters and the world that he had declassified “any and all” documents related to the federal government’s investigation of the “Russian Hoax”—which would have applied to the investigatory records from Robert Mueller’s team and even the full Mueller Report.

In response to an emergency motion filed by BuzzFeed News journalist Jason Leopold seeking unredacted portions of the Mueller Report and FBI witness interview materials (302s), attorneys from the DOJ insisted that it was simply not so that the president had given any such declassification order.

Obama: Trump Glommed Onto Birtherism As An Attention-Seeking Schtick

Former President Barack Obama asserted on Wednesday that President Donald Trump had led the charge on the racist “birther” movement in 2011 merely for the sake of self-promotion, given how he had publicly complimented Obama several times beforehand.

During an interview with Pod Save America, Obama noted that his successor had actually praised him early on in Obama’s presidency, like when he told CNN host Larry King in April 2009 that the then-President was doing a “really good job.”

“And essentially what happened is because the guy just decided he wanted attention, like whether it was to promote Celebrity Apprentice or whatever, he looked and saw what was being said and he said, ‘oh, if that’s what folks want, I can do that with even less inhibition. I don’t need a dog whistle, I’m just gonna go ahead and say it,’” Obama said on Wednesday.

“And that’s how the whole birtherism shtick came about,” he continued.

Good morning, assembled Lizard host! I’m back at home after my visit to the ER. There is no evidence of a heart attack but I did have a pretty serious blood pressure event. My cardiologist has ordered the proverbial “more tests” to determine just what is going on, since I take BP meds and my weight is down to nominally healthy levels. I met some nice folks, including an RN from New Zealand. He was delighted that I recognized his accent and knew the difference between NZ and Oz. He also said that folks at home address him like they would a soldier in a war zone when they write. “Be careful!” “Must be horribly dangerous” “Stay safe,” that sort of thing. I don’t think they’re wrong. I see the local nutjobs less like I would an enemy force and more like I would a pack of dangerous animals. Be aware, take some precautions, but also realize that you are dealing with instinctive rather than rationally determined impulses.

Interesting thread and article. What it boils down to is that Parscale’s reelection campaign for Trump from the beginning was to use social media to activate politically apathetic non-college educated whites through interests that connected them to similar voters such as hunting, NASCAR, etc. So Trump’s primary hope for reelection is that the polls are wrong because they are missing people who don’t fit the likely voter profiles in their models since they weren’t registered and didn’t vote in the past. And there has been a recent GOP registration edge in battleground states. Pinning your hopes on nonvoters is a risky strategy, but when Trump is your candidate, its the only one you’ve got; because all the voters have already made their minds up.

My second computer was an IBM AT which I received for a graduation gift in 1986, when I got my degree in Math & Computer Science.

Trash 80 -> Commodore 64 -> Amiga 500 -> 486 PC

Finally!

“And that’s how the whole birtherism shtick came about,” he continued.

talkingpointsmemo.com

He’s an opportunist. Pure and simple. The only thing he cares about is getting his ugly mug in the news and being racist and antagonistic towards our first black president was a way to do that.

It’s really telling that it seems like the RW punditariat’s main reaction to the NY Post’s bullshit “Hunter Biden Email” “scoop” appears to be focused mainly on vaporing “outrage” about “censorship” and how mean and biased and censorshippy social media has been over reportage on this crap…

And almost NOTHING I have seen* seems to address in the least:
1. Any actual charges/accusations/malfeasance these emails might reveal even if they are real - which is enormously doubtful.
2. Any serious questions as to the provenance/authenticity of either:
a. The “unclaimed laptops” story
b. The data supposed “discovered” via a.
c. The claims of the FBI being involved
3. Any serious inquiry into the timeline of these “revelations”, and the overt involvement of political operatives - from the get-go (lookin’ at YOU, Rudy!)

How it seems to me is fairly obvious: out of desperation at bad polling, the Trump campaign trotted out this stale “Ukrainegate” nonsense for the Murdoch Media to use as political hatchet job on Joe/Hunter Biden. But as usual, ended up chopping themselves in their own foot.

This is why Trump and friends are just happy with an investigation getting reported or mentioned without worrying about any actual investigation being done. They know that the media will run with the mere rumor of a scandal involving the Democrats and not care about facts, accuracy, or the fact they are being conned since those results can be buried on page 6 weeks later when the political damage has been done and the eyeballs of the public are looking at something else. The gossip is profitable, so to hell with journalistic integrity.

So sorry you had to go through that. And yeah, the anti-abortion movement is, at is core, all about shaming women who they view as slutty and promiscuous.

It’s not about the babies. It’s about hating & fearing liberated women.

Media magnate Rupert Murdoch has predicted privately that Democratic nominee Joe Biden will defeat President Donald Trump in the presidential election in a landslide victory, the Daily Beast reported Thursday.

The Australian-born billionaire who has been an influential supporter of the President in the past has remarked to close associates that Trump is his own worst enemy, according to the Daily Beast. Murdoch suggested to at least three Daily Beast sources that Trump has handled the COVID-19 pandemic poorly and ignored advice on how to better manage it, which has created a never-ending crisis for his administration

re: #161 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo

Motel 6 fires agency after founder describes ad campaign as ‘too Black’

Home Depot is also ending its relationship following Stan Richards’ remarks

Motel 6, a longtime client of The Richards Group, has abruptly ended its relationship with the Dallas-based independent agency. The firing comes days after the agency’s 88-year-old founder, Stan Richards, referred to a campaign idea for the brand as “too Black” during an internal meeting that the client did not participate in.

Richards also insinuated that some of Motel 6’s customers are white supremacists, according to a person familiar with the matter.

In a statement to Adweek, Motel 6 said it is “outraged by the statements made about Motel 6 and our customers by a member of The Richards Group during one of its internal meetings. The comments were not only completely inaccurate, they are also in direct opposition of our values and beliefs as an organization.”

Motel 6 will keep the lights on for you…

You have but to ask: here’s a rundown from the WaPo (caution, possible paywall issue)- the laptops (three, reportedly) were brought into what seems to be a small shop in Wilmington (DE) owned by one John Paul MacIsaac. Mac is variously described as “legally blind” and “vison-impaired”, btw, which makes his supposed ID of “Hunter Biden” as the guy who dropped off (and never retrieved) the laptops just a tad suspect….

I can’t read twitter threads at work, but I don’t see Democrats being complacent, and that same criteria - the polls are wrong because they are missing people who don’t fit the likely voter profiles in their models - would tend to miss college students and a lot of people who have been motivated by Taylor Swift.

The worries are why Democrats are turning out like they are for early voting.

Yes, I think this is going to be a huge turnout election favoring Biden. But everyone has to vote because the GOP will have a high turnout as well.

As to “lockdowns too severe,” a month ago, the SF bay area was in category purple, the worst, as was most of the south (LosAngeles and environs). As of Tuesday’s update, most of the bay area and the south have turned red, and some (including my county) is now orange.

And we did it without killing 800,000 people chasing a mythical herd immunity.

Of course, as we’re all saying in a different context, we can’t get complacent.

re: #115 Eric The Fruit Bat

My first computer was a Motorola MicroChroma 68 evaluation board, which was meant to demonstrate the MC 6845 video display controller. I putzed with the RCA CDP1802 a bit, but my “real” first computer was the TI 99/4A. After that I moved to the Atari 520ST, where I jury-rigged adding 512K RAM by piggy-backing it on top of the motherboard.

Mine was a Commodore CBM 8032 from around 1979 - this was the “business” model of the Commodore PET which had a regular (non-chicklet) keyboard, an 80-column black & white monitor and IEEE-488 connections for printer and/or floppy drive. A couple years later I sold it off - which has proved to be a massive mistake in retrospect as it is considered a collector’s item now and worth about three to four times as much as I originally paid for it.

My first computer was a Radio Shack TRS-80 (also fondly remembered as the “Trash80”)

My second computer was an IBM AT which I received for a graduation gift in 1986, when I got my degree in Math & Computer Science.

My first computer instruction was on a TRS-80, and my first computer was an XT clone.

I am glad to see that Twitter has stopped going along with it. This could mark a turning point.

It’s always a turning point. Maybe my problem is that I know too many well-educated or successful people who are dedicated Trumpsters and am still suffering PTSD from our 2016 experience.

I signed up this week to voteforward.org to do additional writing to help out. It does require a printer. The targeted voter list they sent me were for Texas. The letters are all supposed to be sent by Saturday but there probably won’t be an issue if they are mailed a few days later. I feel very guilty for not being more actively involved for this campaign.

As someone who spent over 45 years in programming actuarial software systems, I can understand how Birx, who doesn’t develop software, could be frustrated by the limitations of existing systems and be persuaded by the siren song from an outside vendor that they can magically create a package that does everything she wants.

She never learned that the initial releases of any new software (let’s remember the 2010 ACA release that led to the calamitous GOP takeover of the House and the loss of Senate seats that year) are full of bugs and unforeseen limitations that can wreak havoc. Unfortunately given the urgent nature of the disaster we are living through, there isn’t time to implement all the corrections needed to get things working (assuming that the vendor has staff that can actually implement the changes and the system is sufficiently flexible to accommodate them— that’s not always true)

You want to know why Biden is kicking ass and taking names? It’s because he’s not addicted to social media. 90% of comments you read on a Twitter or Facebook feed for a politician are bots, gifs, bad hot takes, & talking points. Facebook and Twitter have a place. But they’re not the place to run a campaign.

re: #178 FFL (GOP Delenda Est)

This is why Trump and friends are just happy with an investigation getting reported or mentioned without worrying about any actual investigation being done. They know that the media will run with the mere rumor of a scandal involving the Democrats and not care about facts, accuracy, or the fact they are being conned since those results can be buried on page 6 weeks later when the political damage has been done and the eyeballs of the public are looking at something else. The gossip is profitable, so to hell with journalistic integrity.

Isn’t the reason behind this pathetic measure the fact that the Barr investigations have turned up nothing and so the Trump campaign doesn’t have the October surprise they were counting on? I still believe Barr is quite capable of doing what he did in 2019 and publishing a dishonest summary of the uncompleted Durham report, though this year early voting would diminish the impact of such a statement. And this year the MSM (Maggie excepted) would be far less gullible in supporting his words.

I recorded several episodes of the NPR wiring of the radio series off-air as a teen. When I got married, one of my gifts was a set of of off-air recordings of the original Radio Four broadcasts a British colleague of a college friend had made way back when.

Comparing the two, the NPR broadcasts were slightly edited, I think along the lines of the edits noted in the book compiling the radio scripts released ca. 1985 (and re-released ca. 1995), but it has been decades since I did the comparison.

And when the press complains about Biden’s “lid” end of press stuff, they are also complaining about the lack of easily covered events like rallies where all they have to do is mingle with the crowd. And the Biden campaign is also finding just how much a waste of money most of them are anyway. Just the cost of reserving venues and setup must be staggering at times, let alone the cost in staff time and salaries in setting them up and taking them down.

I don’t doubt that after corona, rallies will make some kind of return. But there won’t be as many. You can reach more people online safely and more cheaply anyway with all of the bells and whistles of a show.

Nailed it.

That may be true but a good friend from Wisconsin was ranting yesterday how Biden’s failure to show up in Wisconsin to accept the nomination really hurt him with voters there; she was pleased with his (and Kamala’s) subsequent trips, but reiterated that Wisconsin voters interpreted his change in venue as a lack of respect for their state. Little things like that do matter especially to older voters who are not as wired as we are.

re: #166 NO SMOCKING GUN!

I’m going to throw out a wild theory here:

So yesterday morning I saw a chart showing something like 20k shares/relinks/whatever for the Hunter Biden smear on Facebook (I don’t Facebook, I don’t know the terms) and only a small number on Twitter and some other social media services. This was early morning, before Twitter rather obviously started blocking it, so the obvious reading was that someone botted an amplified distribution on Facebook.

So… what if that was tried on Twitter too - and their monitoring of obvious russian bots saw that this was getting a too-well-timed push there as well, and their recently-more-aggressive moderation team just said “nope” to the whole thing. Then took the link to the exec team, said “here’s the russian spam of the day” and they did a cursory look at its provenance and decided to treat it with the respect it deserves.

That’s what realistic, responsible wide social media moderation can look like. NO ONE IS READING ALL THE MESSAGES - no company can afford to do that. But they can see large trends coming and quickly apply wide filters if given the authority to do so.

Twitter takes a lot of shit, and there are people gaming its system on both sides, but generally speaking I’ve felt they’ve acted responsibly. Facebook has been in bed with the right by comparison, Youtube has an algorithm problem.

[Embedded content]

electoral-vote.com this AM - “How Polling Has Changed since 2016”
- just some salient clips pointing out that “the polls” are likely not wrong; they are not all missing this same contingent of people

…pollsters are being much more careful this time…

To start with, just about every pollster is now weighting for education in order to have the right number of noncollege whites in the weighted sample. …

Some pollsters, including Pew and Ipsos, are now weighting education within racial groups…

…paying more attention to geography. He wants to be sure he has the right number of urban, suburban, and rural voters in his samples….careful not to undersample rural areas.

…in states that register voters by party and publish the party registration is that the pollster can more accurately get whatever percentage of Democrats, Republicans, and independents it wants.

Another change is far more calls are being made to cell phones….

Some pollsters, including Cygnal, PPP, Emerson College, and SurveyUSA are conducting polls by text message. …men and people in urban areas prefer answering polls by text rather than by phone, so the response rates go up when using texts.

On the plus side, in 2016, most of the undecideds voted for Trump. The polls couldn’t and didn’t take that into account. This year the number of undecideds is under 5% and may be even smaller by Election Day, so that factor is minimized….

i know im in a minority - i dont see those cases as legislating from the bench so much as recognizing human immutable truths.

i see them as recognizing that human rights do in fact exist and are intrinsic, though their exercise may have been repressed by others. No one is ‘granted’ extra or new human rights.

What happens is the courts stop government(s) from continuing to repress natural rights. They are allowing people to exercise rights they always had though were unable to exercise because they were actively repressed, or in many cases went unquestioned/unrecognized until they became ripe/salient/obvious.

the civil rights act didnt grant new rights. those rights were always there.

imo same with Loving, Griswold, Roe, etc

Trump again upends stimulus strategy, complaining Mnuchin hasn’t ‘come home with the bacon’
McConnell, meanwhile, rejects the president’s call to ‘Go big or go home’ as he prepares to try to advance slimmed-down bill, edited to add: WaPo

President Trump called Thursday for even more stimulus spending than the $1.8 trillion proposed by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin in his talks with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, injecting yet more chaos into the unruly negotiations as the election nears.
“I would take more. I would go higher,” Trump said in an interview on Fox Business Network, repeating his directive from earlier in the week to “Go big or go home!!!
Trump said he’s communicated his views to Mnuchin.
“I’ve told him. So far he hasn’t come home with the bacon,” the president said.
Trump’s latest comments illustrate the fluid and disorganized state of affairs in the stimulus talks at a time when the economic recovery appears to be stalling less than three weeks from the election.

Amid the dissonant messages, Mnuchin appeared to be moving in Pelosi’s direction in their ongoing talks. He said Thursday that the administration was basically prepared to accept language Pelosi has insisted on to establish a national coronavirus testing strategy.
“When I speak to Pelosi today, I’m going to tell her that we’re not going to let the testing issue stand in the way. That we’ll fundamentally agree with their testing language, subject to minor issues,” Mnuchin said on CNBC. “This issue is being overblown.”
It was not immediately clear, however, what if anything was being agreed to. Mnuchin and Pelosi had yet to speak, and a Pelosi spokesman said they had not yet heard specifics from the Treasury secretary on what he was agreeing to.

Kos has a diary up about the whole “Fight like we’re ten points down” nonsense (which he’s against), and posted this challenge:

So here’s a test—are you motivated by Democrats leading the Maine Senate race by five points, or losing the Kansas Senate race by five points? Which one gets you more excited to donate and volunteer?

If you say “losing by five points,” you are lying. Because we can see how Maine’s Sara Gideon has raised more money and generated far more national excitement than Kansas’ Barbara Bollier. That doesn’t mean that we can’t win the Kansas race! It doesn’t mean we aren’t fighting for it! But which one gets people more excited? Time and time again, it’ll be the race in which we’re leading (or tied).

Conservatives know this, which is why they have a media machine to feed them sweet, sweet reassuring lies, which is why Trump screams about “fake news” and “fake polls,” and why conservative bunk polling outfits like Rasmussen and Gravis exist. They create an alternate reality in which they’re always winning, because even hints of losing demobilize base participation.

In 2010, Democratic chances plummeted the more we realized we were losing. There wasn’t any “oh, we’re losing by 10, I’m so fired up!” Nah, people said “fuck it” and walked away from politics. And we got saddled with a decade of Republican gerrymanders at the federal and state levels, and the voter suppressive legislation that cost us the 2016 election.

Don’t tell people we’re losing, or to pretend that we’re losing, because you’re hurting the cause.

Six post-Trump reforms to help protect the rule of law, Opinion by Bob Bauer and Jack Goldsmith, WaPo

Bob Bauer, the White House counsel from 2009 to 2011, is a professor at New York University Law School on leave this fall to work as a senior adviser on Joe Biden’s presidential campaign. Jack Goldsmith, a professor at Harvard Law School and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution, was head of the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel from 2003 to 2004. They co-authored the book “After Trump: Reconstructing the Presidency.”

1. The next administration will immediately face the fraught question of whether and how to investigate and, if warranted, prosecute possible crimes Trump committed while in office. If such an investigation of an ex-president occurs, it should take place pursuant to a transparent process supervised by the attorney general. The investigation and prosecution should be conducted by a special counsel. A former president seeking clemency should have to apply for it, and the application should not be considered until any charges have been filed. The process should include analysis by the attorney general and consultation with Congress.

2. Clarify statutes on how obstruction of justice applies to the president.

3. Reform the pardon power: specifically Bribery (see Roger Stone).

4. Reform special counsel regulations: limits on authority to collect information; ensure reports are publicly reported.

5. Justice Dept. needs reform of internal rules “to clarify obstruction-of-justice statutes apply” to partisan actions.

6. Justice Dept. needs reform of rules such as the Durham investigation: should be done by independent IG rather than in house. If crimes are discovered, they should be pursued by a special counsel.

All of these struck me as healthy steps!

2 points.

At this point, with over a half a billion dollars thrown at Biden, plus all the money going to other candidates, 2 points down is depressing as well. We’re reaching the stage where the only applicable sport is hockey.

About time someone said it. It is nonsense and it feeds the whole Biden and Democrats have no enthusiasm bs narrative. I don’t think people realize how historically unpopular this clusterfuck of a President is both personally and as President.

Remember the Strong Horse Theory? People back the candidate and team that acts and appears stronger. Pretending that we’re ten, fifteen, twenty, fifty points behind demoralizes the team, undermines confidence, and often has the effect of psyching oneself out of victory.

Six post-Trump reforms to help protect the rule of law, Opinion by Bob Bauer and Jack Goldsmith, WaPo

I’d add something about abuse of power. Apparently there’s no legislation directly aimed at abuses like BridgeGate. The prosecution had to rely on legislation directed at financial fraud (i.e. stealing money), which was never a good fit. There needs to be something directly targeting abuse of power for political purposes, which is the modern Putin-esque authoritarian tool.

Nate Pollyanna Silver gives my Senator 1 chance in 4 of surviving, and Trump 98 chances out of 100 to win my state. I’m a freaking optimist at 2 points. That’s why I’ve got the 4-6 PM shift again today at the VR table.

If the Dems take over the Senate and Biden wins the WH, will we get a stimulus bill at the end of January?

as soon as possible, yes. but by then the Stock Market will have crashed, and Biden will have to choose between tossing more billions in to prop it up or letting it recover on its own accord…either way will be an impossibly tough call

I’ve never heard it before but it checks out. I know it’s hope for the best/prepare for the worst but it certainly is demoralizing and it makes it hard to create enthusiasm when we could be looking at the biggest presidential win for a Democratic presidential nominee since LBJ but you’d never know it because people are chicken littles after 2016 while ignoring gains in the years since. I get 2016 trauma. I still have it myself but I’m also encouraged that the country is going to send Trump home to wait for many days in court.

If, on January 3rd, when Congress convenes, the House and Senate start passing bills, when do they have to be sent to the White House? Could they pass a stimulus on the 4th, and hold onto it until Biden is sworn in? I mean, they could pass it out of one, and then wait until the 21st to pass it out of the other, but that would give too many people time to delay it.

I’d guess that if the 117th Congress (both Dem-controlled Houses) are going to pass a stimulus bill at all, they’ll get the details worked out and finalized, and ready to send to the President ASAP. If that President is still Trump, he’d probably be likely to veto it just out of spite, so I imagine that (unfortunately) we are going to have to wait til 1/21.

BTW, is there a special term applicable to a Congressional session like the one we will have in 2021 (and had in 2017) where there is a brief “interregnum” between the start of a new Congress (Monday 1/4 next year), and the swearing-in of a new President/Administration?
The opposite of “lame-duck”??

If the Dems take the Senate and Biden wins the WH, the bill should be signed the day after he takes office.

Also… Dems should announce in November that landlords who don’t evict anybody, the Dem stimulus bill will cover those tenants getting caught up on their rent. Landlords who do evict people, so sorry but you’ll have to eat the shortfalls yourself.

You want Congress committees to be up and running in time for confirmation hearings, it would also be nice for a new POTUS to already have some sweet legislation sitting on his desk……just saying…

re: #388 Eclectic Cyborg

It used to be worse. Up until FDR’s second term, presidents were not sworn in until March 4. That gave Congress a head start on legislation while also holding up the incoming cabinet. That’s why presidents were often regarded as merely chief clerks until the 20th century.

Historically, they are a lot closer than they used to be: until the 1930s, Election Day was early November, Inauguration Day was March 4, and Congress usually didn’t formally meet until December (!).

The AS400 were neat machines, technically. I’m glad I never had to admin one for work but I’d love to play with one. Token ring, now that brings back nightmares… not even scsi bus issues could need as many sacrifices and dark rituals to get working right.

AS 400s are still in use at my old company.

Started with an Atari 800XL, went to an Atari ST then on to a 386 based clone. I was coding in C and Fortran in DOS when Windows was all the way up to version 2.

Started with TRS-80 with 4K of RAM, then to an Apple IIc, then to the MCS system (primitive DTP), then to a PC-AT, then Coyote, then finally to a Zeos 386-25 that I installed a SoundBlaster and a 24/96 modem to connect to Prodigy and CompuServe.

… and there my troubles began …
