Yet the explanation is simple: Obama was dunking on Donny at the WHCA dinner the same night OBL was having his brains splattered, knew the operation was underway as he was making fun of Hair Furor, and then “spiked the football” once it was all over.

So Trump is signing onto the conspiracy theory because he hates Obama with a fiery passion hotter than the Big Bang.

I guess the November Surprise will be Trump shooting James O’Keefe in a Bin Laden mask and trying to take the credit. I sort of jest but I don’t even fucking know anymore with this guy. Sure doesn’t hurt that Democrats are voting early and locking in our votes, while Republicans are waiting for November and could yet decide to flip or just stay home.

Exactly. I seldom ever see Trump stress the importance of voting. His whole schtick is resentment after resentment. I wonder how much he’ll gut himself by continuing only to appeal to his Twitter feed. That’s what he’s doing at this point. He’s not even really appealing to his base anymore.

Yeah…I really, really hate the way that lie of his is being handled. I’ve talked a fair bit about the crucial importance of framing and avoiding the Familiarity Backfire Effect by NOT repeating falsehoods (even - or perhaps especially - when trying to refute them).

Consider the following statement: it isn’t true that purple bacterial lifeforms have been found on Mars.

Repeat the above often enough, and what are people most likely to remember? The purple bacterial lifeforms on Mars part, of course. In other words, the more you repeat a lie, the more familiar and thus believable it becomes.

So instead of repeating trump’s garbage about masks, or coming up with the almost-as-lame comeback of “that’s not what the study said”, here’s what the media (such as we’re stuck with) ought to be doing:

1) Repeat actual facts about masks, preferably short and memorable (e.g. about the COVID-positive hairstylists in Missouri who infected NONE of their 140 clients since they all wore masks).

2) Say what the study trump is lying about actually concluded (which I still don’t know! Because all people are doing is repeating trump’s lie!)

True. I just think a lot of them are guilty for using 2016 as their only measuring stick for Trump and Biden.

The biggest issue for them is that CV-19 totally upended the conventional wisdom of how reelection years go. A year ago, the conventional wisdom was that Trump was going to be “tough” to beat because people would love him for the “strong” economy. That it was a good idea for him to focus on making the election a referendum because he could run around, telling people about how Dems were gonna raise taxes and drive the deficit up, while he would finally get the economy up above that 3% hurdle and fulfill all those promises the Dems kept getting in the way of.

Trump ‘kisses dictators’ butts’ and ‘mocks evangelicals,’ Sasse says in call with constituents

Democrats in disarray. /s

WASHINGTON — Sen. Ben Sasse torched President Donald Trump during a Wednesday telephone town hall with constituents.

The Washington Examiner obtained an audio clip of the conversation and was first to report Sasse’s statements. A woman on the call asked Sasse why he criticizes the president so much.

Sasse responded by first talking about areas where he agrees with Trump, such as judicial nominations. But then he said a number of the president’s values are deficient — not just for a Republican, Sasse said, but for any American.

After listening to Graham whining about how unfair Citizens United is, it’s clear that the GOP leadership just never believed that their weapons could be used against themselves. It’s not that they decided it was a risk they were willing to take, or gamed it out in any way: it was just their toy and now the bad people grabbed it and they don’t know what to do.

I don’t think the MAGAt rabble think that way. I think those bunch are all terrified that if they lose power, all the women and gays and browns and blacks and liberals will do to the MAGAts what the MAGAts did to them.

re: #95 ericblair

After listening to Graham whining about how unfair Citizens United is, it’s clear that the GOP leadership just never believed that their weapons could be used against themselves. It’s not that they decided it was a risk they were willing to take, or gamed it out in any way: it was just their toy and now the bad people grabbed it and they don’t know what to do.

I don’t think the MAGAt rabble think that way. I think those bunch are all terrified that if they lose power, all the women and gays and browns and blacks and liberals will do to the MAGAts what the MAGAts did to them.

I’ve been saying for years now that CU has turned out to be the biggest example of why you should be careful what you wish for. Before CU, the party kept control on the backbenchers through threats of withholding campaign money at reelection time. And allowed them to fight off far-right challengers by giving the incumbents a massive war chest during primary season. The thinking behind CU was that that it would only further that advantage by allowing them to tap into a virtually unlimited river of dark money.

Problem is that guys like Adelson, like the Kochs, like Murdoch, and others suddenly weren’t shackled to the party’s leadership. They could dump unlimited amounts of money into the coffers of whoever they liked, which meant that they could shape the party without input from the leadership. That was what made the Tea Party such a potent force in the Obama years, the fact that if you crossed some big money man, he’d bankroll the far-right loon who’d skin you alive. Instead of speaking out against that or pushing for campaign finance reform, the shitheels like Graham went with the flow and ceased to be loyal to the party and instead loyal to the money men.

So he’s got a lot of brass to whine now about how CU is being used against him.

His only realistic hope is that his lawyers can challenge enough absentee ballots in states where the margins are thin to claim “victory.” The courts are not going to order states to stop counting, and it’s very likely states that they try to do so to will flip them off and keep the machines running. And even this strategy only has a hope if turnout is at or lower than it was in 2016. If it’s like 2018 was or higher, then even that strategy will not work for him, only reduce how large a loss he suffers.

Problem is that this is going to end up being a “kid kills parents, begs leniency because he’s an orphan” play. The courts are likely to take a very jaundiced view to any challenges brought by his campaign where “irregularities” trace back to their or the GOP’s efforts to fuck with the vote.

In the approximately 20 minutes before the town hall was turned over to audience questions, Guthrie thoroughly grilled him. As Trump repeated false claims about the coronavirus outbreak and equivocated on things like QAnon and accepting the election results, Guthrie peppered him with sharp questions, follow-ups and fact checks.

When Trump claimed that a study showed 85% of people who wear masks still get the coronavirus, Guthrie noted he falsely characterized the study.

When Trump defended his pandemic response by citing another study that showed 2 million people could have died of the coronavirus, Guthrie rightly noted that model predicted that only if the government did precisely zero mitigation.

When Trump declined to denounce QAnon because he said he didn’t know what it was about, Guthrie provided details about what it was about and invited him to do it, noting Sen. Ben Sasse (R) has flatly denounced it as a baseless conspiracy theory.

When Guthrie pressed Trump on his retweets this week of a bizarre conspiracy theory about Osama bin Laden’s death, Trump explained by saying he was just passing along. Guthrie then provided the retort those tweets have long demanded: that he’s the president, not someone’s “crazy uncle” spouting off on Twitter, and that the information he promotes matters.”

Joe Concha is pushing something like “Trump was asked over 45 questions while Biden was only asked around 10” on Fox. First, I don’t know if that’s true, but if it is it’s because of what you’re pointing at: Biden gave long, detailed responses to technical questions. Trump did not.

Still, none of these extreme game outs are gonna happen..with the courts, the EC, the house etc

the fact that Twitter finally stood its ground and refused to allow retweet of a bullshit article is a good sign. They averted a lot of damage by keeping that foreign misinformation hit piece on the back burner.

The Right are trying to make an issue of that, but that only plays to their base. And Trump is seeing that he can no longer play the social media like a fiddle as he did with such success in 2016.

re: #240 Shiplord Kirel: Fan of USPS, Goodyear, and Oreo

Russia is spreading lies about Covid vaccines, says UK military chief (September 30)

Russia is seeking to destabilise countries around the world by sowing disinformation about coronavirus vaccines that is shared rapidly across social media, the head of the armed forces has warned.

Gen Sir Nick Carter, the chief of defence staff, said the propaganda tactic reflected a strategy of “political warfare” aggressively undertaken by Beijing as well as Moscow “designed to undermine cohesion” across the west.

The senior general accused “autocratic rivals” of “manipulating the information environment” to exploit the Covid-19 crisis for strategic gain - including “pro-Russian vaccine politics” - in a speech at the Policy Exchange thinktank.

Their “disinformation narratives” were designed to permeate anti-vaccination social media groups, Carter added, pointing to an example uncovered earlier this summer by Australian researchers that spread rapidly from Ukraine.

In July, a fake press release was posted to websites of the pro-Russian self-declared state in Luhansk, eastern Ukraine. It falsely claimed that the US had conducted vaccine trials on Ukrainian volunteers, some of whom had died.

These fucking assholes:

Trump Administration rejects California disaster assistance request for wildfires

The Trump administration has rejected California’s request for a disaster declaration for six destructive wildfires that burned hundreds of thousands of acres across the state, including a massive central California wildfire that has become the single largest in state history.

“The request for a Major Presidential Disaster Declaration for early September fires has been denied by the federal administration,” Brian Ferguson, a spokesperson for the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services, confirmed to CNN. The state plans to appeal the decision.

The denial comes after California Gov. Gavin Newsom requested financial aid from the federal government in a September 28 letter to the Trump administration outlining the financial impact of the wildfires.

Writing that infrastructure damage estimates exceeded $229 million, Newsom asserted that “federal assistance is critical to support physical and economic recovery of California and its communities.”

He really thinks he’s only the President of red states and blue states can just fuck right off.

The big rush of satanic panic prosecutions was in the early 80s… I dunno that Reagan had anything to do with it but it sure flourished under him and his justice department.

Actually, Satanic Ritual Abuse was a thing all the way through the 1980s and didn’t start to die out until the early 1990s. It’s all bullshit, of course.

Just to show that “conservatives” and the GRU have not achieved a complete monopoly on dis-information, this bullshit showed up in my FB feed today:

In the past few days two different friends told my wife they had gone into the new hobby lobby store in Marlboro, New Jersey and noticed that, although there already was a lot of Christmas merchandise available, there was none for the Jewish holiday of Chanukah (some people drop the “C” and spell it Hannukah. Same holiday).
When one of our friends asked where the Chanukah goods were, was told there wouldn’t be any, and asked why. According to her, the answer was:
“We don’t cater to you people”
Understandably irate, she called the home office, and was told, indifferently, that hobby lobby doesn’t have Chanukah on its list of holidays.
Having heard this, and always wanting to be certain of what I write about, I just called the Marlboro hobby lobby and asked whether it would be stocking any Chanukah merchandise. I was told it would not. When I asked why, the answer - verbatim - was:
“Because Mr. Green is the owner of the company, he’s a Christian, and those are his values”
FYI, I would guess that, in a five mile radius around that Marlboro store, a solid one-third of all residents are Jewish. But, then again, what is the difference? Since the reason hobby lobby won’t sell Chanukah goods is unrelated to how many Jews are in the area, it wouldn’t matter if the percentage were higher or lower.
The reason is that Mr. green’s Christian “values” preclude him selling anything related to a Jewish holiday - not just Chanukah, but Passover too, based on the call I just made to corporate headquarters.

I have many other complaints about Shabby-Hab but the truth is that they have an extensive line of Hannukah merchandise and apparently always have had. I think my favorite is the Hannukah Dog plush toy, which might well be a recycled X-mas manger donkey.

I don’t know if it’s been mentioned yet but the fundraising efforts of the ActBlue campaign have been immensely effective - with the numbers for Q3 donations being reported.

ActBlue’s stunning third quarter: $1.5 billion in donations

To give you an idea on how big that is, compare it with the Republican WinRed campaign that raised $620 million over the same Q3 period. ActBlue’s totals are almost two and a half times what Republicans were accomplishing, in what would have been an otherwise record haul for them.

I WON THE LOTTO! (1 free ticket)

My wife’s and my ballots arrived in the mail this morning. We’re going to vote so hard they feel it all the way to Washington. Since we’re day-sleepers and it’s already past our bedtime, we’ll be filling them in this evening, then driving them into the county seat in the morning.

The only Republican I will be voting for is the chairwoman of my village board, who is running for Clerk of the District Court. (If she wins, that will open up a seat on the village board which would be filled by appointment, and I’ve already been asked to fill it. I’m considering that. Being back on the village board, in addition to working for the village, would help set me up for a run against my state senator.)

Coronavirus is spiraling out of control in the Nebraska Panhandle. The highest number of cases recorded was October 14, with fifty-four. Yesterday there were twenty-three more.

Total is now 1,237, of which 275 are active. All towns but three have at least one active case (mine, Lisco, and Llewellyn excepted). Deaths remain at 11.

Women and girls are still 2/3 of cases, and the most cases by age are 20-29 followed by 10-19. The largest school district in the region (Scottsbluff Public Schools) went back on their statement in April they would close if PPHD’s risk assessment was “high,” they are going to power through no matter how many children and staff they make sick.

OH NOES! ISIS and Shariah law have invaded my hometown! Block the roads, close the airport, man the barricades!

Oh, wait. The banner does in fact say “Love is for all.” How insidious!

(Citizens Tower is a decrepit 15 story office building that the city got stuck with when the previous owner went bankrupt and no private buyer could be found. There were proposals to implode it but even that would have cost millions. At one point it appeared that the structure might demolish itself: In 2011, several of the half ton marble trim slabs fell off, one of them crushing a state police car on the street below. Nobody was hurt but the trim was removed forthwith.)

The culprit was speedily identified:
Lubbock Police Arrest Suspect for Hanging Arabic Banner

Kyle Alexander Holub, dangerous Middle-Eastern operative.

The charge was reduced to a misdemeanor, Holub paid a token fine and went on his way.

Alma mater of actor Tommy Lee Jones and former First Lady Laura Bush:

MISD community members react to Midland Lee’s new name, Legacy High School

MIDLAND, Texas (Big 2/Fox 24) - Midland ISD Board of Trustees voted to rename Robert E. Lee High School to Legacy High School. After months of deliberation and three nominations by the Citizen’s Committee, trustees voted on a completely new name.

Christian Shedwin says it has been a personal topic over the course of several months as he is a Robert E. Lee alum and a black man.

“I think this was very important that it was done while I was alive and very important for the kids that come after me that look just like me,” said Shedwin. “I was a Lee grad who participated in band, choir, theater, and orchestra. You know, I danced with the Dixie Dolls, I was a TMEA All-Stater, and I don’t think that a name on the building would’ve taken away from any of those things. So to say that it was going to erase the history - it’s just not true.”

Of course, there were neo-confederate critics, pretending that Bobby Lee will now be erased from history, just as Hitler was in Germany after the new regime outlawed naming things for him.

But for President of “Save Lee Rebels.” Carie McNeil, it is wiping away 60 years of tradition.

“We have people that have gone on and done amazing things from Lee High School, and that’s not going to be a legacy. You start over. I don’t care what they say.”

Nearly 200,000 Nebraskans have already voted in 2020 election (Scottsbluff Star-Herald)

The number represents 1/4 of all votes cast in 2016.

Nebraska election officials said they had no way to break out its returned ballots by date but said 235,033 people voted early in 2016, including military and overseas ballots and several rural precincts that vote entirely by mail.

Several states have taken steps to make early voting easier since 2016. Nebraska and its counties sent ballot request postcards to every voter this year.

The state’s 2020 early voting numbers are being boosted by Douglas and Sarpy Counties.

Douglas and Sarpy Counties are Omaha and suburbs (NE-2, now leaning blue against Trump).

Rural counties already have mandatory vote-by-mail whereas cities require requesting an absentee ballot (mail ballots are called absentee ballots in state law so everyone in a rural county gets an absentee ballot). By law, absentee ballots are “no excuse required.”

I’m not sure if this shows a blue trend here (although it probably does in NE-2, particularly in the races between Trump and Biden, and Rep. Bacon and Eastman).

Another local observation:(a little wordy, but I have a point, promise)

I live in a pretty wealthy area, when we moved here in the early 90s, the houses were mostly like mine, built in the 70s, a bit run down, but still pretty nice single family homes, on maybe a half to 3/4 of an acre on a two lane road. We bought the place for 105K and spent probably another 50K over the years on a total remodel, new siding, a couple of porch/deck rebuilding, new windows and doors, pool liners, a fence, etc.

Today there are subdivisions all around us, and the road is 4 lanes. Those newer homes start in the high 300s and there are some single standing homes that are a couple million (including one hideous mess down the road that will end up being 4 or more mil), the lower priced new houses are mostly in “adult communities”, like the one next to us.

I belong to several facebook local yard sale/things for sale pages and every day I’m seeing sales in the newer neighborhoods. Like whole house furnishings, clothing, cars, kitchen stuff, toys, TVs, the whole nine yards. In October, and when I say whole house furnishings, I mean bedroom, living room, dining room, bookcases, etc. This is a rare thing, maybe someone has a moving sale here and there, or yard sales in the spring, and it’s rarely the fancy houses, it’s folks like me and mine. This is new thing, so I wonder how many of these families are nearly bankrupt now and have to get out while they can. This is bad sign for this area, lots of money here, which keeps the local economy humming. But things are not ever going back to normal here, and if that’s how it is here, I cannot imagine living in an even less stable local economy.

Archdiocese of Omaha probe substantiates sexual misconduct allegations against deceased priest (Omaha World-Herald)

An Archdiocese of Omaha investigation substantiated multiple accusations of sexual misconduct with minors made against the late Rev. Theodore “Ted” Richling.

The archdiocese informed the Douglas County Attorney’s Office after it received complaints against Richling last summer.

The archdiocese concluded its internal investigation in September, according to a press release from Deacon Timothy F. McNeil.

Richling died in December 2019. He was ordained in 1971 and served at several rural and urban parishes in northeast Nebraska, according to the press release.

“The Archdiocese of Omaha remains committed to the protection of young people and vulnerable adults, the prevention of abuse, healing for victims of abuse and cooperating with civil authorities,” the press release said. “Anyone concerned about the actions of a member of the clergy or any church worker should contact law enforcement.”

(more, the Archdiocese offers an outreach telephone number for victims to contact outside assistance and the police)

I mean, don’t get me wrong - Trump is absolutely odious enough to be a QAnon believer himself; remember that Trump was a Birther. But even if he doesn’t personally believe it, he’ll never denounce it as long as the people who do believe it still support him.

Trump is a liar about everything. He may have promoted Birtherism but I am 100% confident that he never believed in it. It’s his followers who are the idiot believers, not him. There are only two things he cares about: personal wealth and respect. And he doesn’t have either but puts up a good front that deceives tens of millions of Americans. Independents are always temporarily embarrassed Republicans. All they need is some sort of excuse or rationalisation to wave away their nominal independence or undecidedness to pull the lever for the magic R.

Thankfully, no. Almost of a third of Colorado’s registered voters are independent, so if they voted Republican we would be Wyoming instead of bluish-purple.

You are right in a way though - most of the independents are not undecided or somewhere in between. Most of them almost always vote for the same party and just don’t want to be members for their own reasons.

Anymouse 🌹🏡😷  Oct 16, 2020 • 9:54:18am

It’s been over a month since I wrote a letter to the Scottsbluff Star-Herald, let’s see if they print my new one, responding to a religious wingnut.

His original letter: starherald.com

I’m writing in response to Mr. Ken Trevithick’s letter from Oct. 16.

Rewording his first sentences: As an American veteran myself, I am deeply concerned about the direction the Republican Party is trying to move our nation. The authoritarianism that is being presented and illiberal philosophies being proposed should alarm anyone who knows the foundational platform of the Declaration of Independence.

The Declaration of Independence was a statement to the world about the reasons the Colonies rebelled: That a tyrant king ran roughshod over his subjects’ rights, and Parliament did not heed cries for relief.

What is law in the USA is the Constitution. That lists no god or religion as the basis of our secular government, the very first established in the world, which respects any faith and none. It respects the people.

The world’s largest socialist organization is the US military; the Pledge of Allegiance was written by a Christian Socialist minister.

The part of the Declaration of Independence which is most important: That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That’s all the governed, not just a particular religious sect. The best protection of religion in the USA is a government which stays out of the affairs of religious views.

The Soviet Union’s constitution guaranteed freedom of religion. They didn’t have it because of soldiers and political minders in the churches.

You don’t want a government “based on God.” Such a government would necessarily dictate what God wants. Theocracy rarely works out well for those not aligned with the theocrats.

Alexis de Tocqueville in his book “Democracy in America” written at the start of the XIX Century, noted that in his travels the USA had a flourishing religious life, not because of government involvement in religion but specifically because government stayed out of religion and religion stayed out of government.

As a disabled vet who served under my country’s flag and as an atheist, I hope my rights would be respected. Theocracies rarely work out for people like me.

As for socialism, when people band together to form a government to do that which individuals cannot, that is socialism. Police, the military, roads, public schools, disaster relief, Social Security, all of it. That word has been used as a thought-stopper by conservatives for over a hundred years.

Nancy and Ronnie were in many ways Melon and Donnie but in a different era. Fortunately, I think the further we get passed the Reagan presidency some of the mythos will fade. It is funny hearing from people like Ted Cruz and Rubio who were teenagers in the Reagan years though waxing poetic about how great Reagan was.

Not completely fair here: Nancy and Ronnie were truly in love with each other and a devoted couple. He let himself be guided by her; she wasn’t a mere prop.

There is a small faction of true independents, who usually vote against the status quo. They broke for Trump in ‘16, and they are breaking for Biden now. Trump’s only real hope is that his strategy to activate nonvoting whites without a college degree through social media works. Its a long shot.

Follow-up to my Wednesday story here about my second-hand exposure to someone who has COVID:

As it turns out, the woman with Covid was diagnosed over the phone by a nurse in her doctor’s office and never had an official test. The nurse said she didn’t require one because she had “classic” symptoms. My good friend (her landlord) just called me to tell me that I’m costing her money because she is going to get a COVID test now due to my insistence that you can be contagious even if you’re asymptomatic. Apparently insurance covers only part of the cost and she’s going to have $70 out-of-pocket charge. This is ridiculous that you have to pay money to see if you are contagious — or is the charge due to the fact that the woman did not an official confirmed diagnosis.

Illinois appears once again in the midst of an uncontrolled pandemic in terms of number of cases (but maybe due to more testing?) and the deaths are creeping up, but at least still far below what they were at the height of the disease back in May.

Given what Joe was saying — in print — about DT at the same time, I’m not sure free publicity was what they had in mind. They might have wanted to show what a wack-job he was. (I didn’t and don’t watch Morning Joe.) Didn’t have that effect, obviously.

Yeah the ROI is a liberal place now. I’ve been twice since 2009 including living a month in Galway City. The Irish people are intimately familiar with the experience of immigration so IMO anti-immigrant populism and thus rabid anti EU attitudes haven’t happened there to the same extent it did in the UK. Taoiseach Varnakar is also a child of an immigrant himself as well. That said, NI did have some sectarian divides on Brexit though it like the Scots did vote to remain the EU though not to the same extent.

re: #379 NetworkKed

I donated to Obama in 08 and 12. Tossed a few bucks at Actblue tickers at BJ and GOS over the years.

I abandoned the email I used for that for a variety of reasons, but one of the big ones was the never-ending deluge of spam. If I ever donate again, I’m going to stand up a dedicated email just for that.

I never donated to any campaign until the 2016 Primaries. I donated once to Bernie Sanders. I received a few followups from his campaign, but unsubscribing was simple.

Most of my spammy E-mail comes from veterans groups.

Paulette Dale, a registered Republican who told President Trump he had a nice smile at last night’s town hall event on NBC, told the Miami New Times she’s going to vote for Joe Biden

So that’s what schadenfreude smells like

Looks like Trump is actively trying to help Collins’ campaign.

So where is this Trump health care proposal? Except for M4All, there isn’t an alternative to the Republican designed ACA.

Ok, I realize it’s Trump, but WTF….

opening up 5000 square miles of Ocean to Maine,

What did he do?
Unilaterally extend their “territorial waters”??
Boost their lobster quotas? What?

Oh, and FSC as well: if this crap helps send her off to retirement, I won’t complain.

re: #367 John Hughes

Oh, yeah, and as for why.

The current story is that the father of a highschooler, enraged that a history teacher had shown the cartoons of Mohammad to the children in class, killed the teacher before being shot dead by the Brigade anti-Criminalité.

The detail being that Charb, editor of Charlie Hebdo, was born in Conflans.

Edit: and, of course that is all bollocks.

The attacker has been identified as a young man of 18 years with no known connection to the school or the teacher.

It’s Jimmy Kimmel’s, but I stole it yesterday (and I did credit him) and brought it here and it stuck. It’s my new favorite name, and it’s almost Halloween, so it fits in with the season and festivities, WINNING!

A thief who gives credit is forever a credit to noble thievery!
