To address a concern that was raised a couple of threads back, I believe he can take his Secret Service agents with him when he absconds. Unless a warrant has somehow already been issued at that point, they cannot keep him by force. When they get to Moscow, the USSS detail simply reports to the US embassy and takes the next plane home.

Minnesota was at 2.2k - but they also had 45k tests, which is an enormous increase in their testing compared to previously, and still has us sitting near a 5% new positive/test %.

Also, I’d be fine with Trump fleeing the country after the election. A pretty straightforward admission of guilt, and we could still try various associates and family members that didn’t make the flight.

The plane doesn’t belong to him in the first place. It belongs to the American People. It’s not his property. Neither is the Secret Service. I can’t see the pilot just doing his bidding and flying him anywhere on command. What’s Trump going to do? Fire them? Isn’t there something in the law about defying illegal orders? If not why the hell not?

I don’t think he’s going to run either. He’s never suffered any consequences for anything he’s done wrong, from childhood to today. He most likely does think he can beat any charges and will do so again. He’s got too big of an ego to just fade away to Moscow or wherethefuckever. He will relish the attention and further tv time he’ll get, press conferences and so on while any legal proceedings take place. Unless he feels seriously cornered and his kids and other associates bail on him or end up in jail. Then I could see him trying to get outta Dodge.

Trump’s company has a suitable plane of its own, a Boeing 757 called Trump Force One. It will seat Cheeto, Melania and Barron (maybe), and 40 stooges, accomplices, lackeys, and other fugitives. It can carry a lot more if they cram the escapees into the aisles and under the beds. It has auxiliary fuel tanks in the luggage compartments and can make the flight to Russia from DC.

Probably like many people here, I was an ardent watcher of Stargate SG-1 when it was running. At times it tried to dabble in hard sci-fi, but mostly it was a light affair with plenty of comedy.

One thing that bothered me was when the characters would throw out galaxy names. Case in point, the “Pegasus” galaxy which became the premise setting for the spin-off Stargate Atlantis. I’d watch the show and go “no such thing is known”, and wonder why the writers didn’t use the name of one of the many known dwarf galaxies near our own galaxy.

Well, today I’m watching a presentation on Large Magellanic Cloud modeling as a test of dark matter, and the presenter throws up this map of the latest compilation of known small galaxies around the Milky Way:

And lo and behold.. there is “Peg3” in the middle. So when did that appear?

Turns out in 2015 (after Stargate had its TV run) the discovery was announced: A Hero’s Dark Horse: Discovery of an Ultra-Faint Milky Way Satellite in Pegasus

Peg3 should not be confused with the “Pegasus Dwarf Galaxy” which is a companion of M31, the great galaxy in Andromeda.

When Stargate first mentioned “Pegasus galaxy” they could not have referred to the Andromeda companion as that would be too far away. So the writers were just making things up.

Turns out, the writers can now ret-con in Peg3 should Stargate ever be rebooted.

(It should be noted that Pegasus as a constellation covers a large section of the sky, so there are a great many galaxies in the direction of Pegasus, but they are all far, far away and the Stargate “Pegasus” galaxy was supposed to be close to the Milky Way, close enough to reach it with the show’s premised inventions.)

do you imagine his secret service agents are boarding a plane with him, with the clear understanding that Trump is fleeing the country? Their responsibility and oath of office is to protect the president against foreign and domestic adversaries. They certainly aren’t going to allow the president to wander off to Russia for a debriefing.

So… I’m going to mildly disagree with you. Stargate canon was that those Asgard hyperdrives were capable of Ludicrous Speed (tm) more or less. And maybe it’s just fanon but it makes sense they can really cut loose when they’re out of the galactic halo and there’s nothing (like puny dwarf galaxies) to dodge.

But while they did a decent job keeping canon under control, you’re right that it was pretty soft sci fi so this sort of stuff really can just be ignored.

The USA has no Extradition Treaty with Russia, which makes Russia eligible as a last resort for a criminal Trump Crime Family.

Their first knee-jerk inclination will be Europe (obviously where white people are) but the Extradition issue looms large there. Hungary or some other Eastern European country might likely seem an obvious destination for the short term. Another candidate is Brazil which has a Trumpy President but does have an Extradition with the US. Ultimately, the UAE would seem to be great for Trump, but reveal his total hypocrisy with the US Muslim-hating Base. It remains to be seen if he cares to shed his US Base or stick with the con. The UAE needs US Military assistance with Iran so Trump would soon be unwelcome there in any regard. Putin would like a pet, but a misbehaved loon like Trump would soon overstay his welcome despite causing embarrassment propaganda for the US. Would Putin be content to keep the most noteworthy propaganda trophy in world history or would Trump soon cause problems inside Russia itself? I guess it remains to be seen because Trump will be fleeing like the sorry coward he is soon.

re: #48 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus

I just wanted to say that if we could see it fully, Andromeda galaxy would be four times the size of the full moon. The reason we *don’t* see it with the naked eye, or by just looking through a telescope, for example, is due to low surface brightness. All those gorgeous pictures of galaxies, planetary nebulas, supernova remnants, etc.? It takes hours and hours of just pointing a telescope at the object to get enough photons hitting the photographic plate (old days) or sensors (today). For today’s images, light is collected at different wavelengths and processing can bring out things we wouldn’t see in “normal” light.

So, for example, this amateur astronomer did an image of the Crab Nebula (aka Messier 1, aka the remnant of SN 1054) and it took 22 hours (look at the bottom of the page).

mikesastrophotos.com

This Peg3 discovery is not surprising to me. It’s kind of like discovering Luhman 16, which is a binary brown-dwarf system 6.5 light years from us. The telescope data was collected in 2010 and 2011, but it wasn’t until 2013 that the discovery was announced. Which is in part due to the fact that, as brown dwarfs, Luhman 16 is very cool and would be another “low surface brightness” object since they aren’t properly stars. I suspect as time goes on, we’re going to find a lot of low surface brightness objects in both near and far stellar neighborhoods.

So if Trump flees to Russia, Putin would stick him in a room with FSB interrogators for two months to suck out everything classified he ever heard as prez which somehow stuck to his brain. (Debatable how much that would be, but it would have to be done.) Any future appearances would be massively stage-managed.

I cannot imagine for an instant how Trump could cause Putin problems in Russia. By the time he was allowed the freedom to do so, he’d know that it would buy an instant dirtnap.

…and all this is why the Secret Service would try to keep him from fleeing. But if Trump simply says he’s going to take a vacay in Berlin or something and takes a quick detour into the Russian embassy, it could happen. If Trump does get prosecuted for anything expect to see restrictions on leaving the country, which would allow his SecServ team to act.

re: #53 NetworkKed

When Stargate writers introduced the “Pegasus” galaxy, as a location of Atlantis, the SG team had available only limited craft to make the journey. IIRC, it took weeks for the travel time between Earth and Atlantis.

This is why Atlantis stories included the plot to make the stargate bridge, because travel time in the first generations of Earth craft were too long, and Stargate Command only had one or two working Earth-designed ships.

This limitation of ships is what drove some of the more interesting story lines. Like usual in fiction, when the actors/plot are constrained the writing has be more creative.

Now in the final episodes of the SG-1 series, Earth inherits the full Asgard body of knowledge. This wasn’t exploited much, IIRC though, in the Atlantis series which ran for a few years longer after SG-1 ended.

Anyway, in storyline “Pegasus” was supposed to be a small neighboring galaxy to the Milky Way, and now Peg3 can be ret-conned in should the need arise.

The children who are suffering most because of distance learning are minorities. As an African-American, and someone who attended San Francisco public schools, she’s probably pretty sensitive to that issue.

On the other side, San Francisco has now reached category orange, the second best level in California. With a population of about 880,000, it has a .9% rate of positive tests, and had 25 new cases today (numbers have been dropping steadily since late August.). There is a total of 29 hospitalized patients. That, and the problems with distance learning, are what is driving the conflict here.

I seriously doubt that school sports are much of a factor — all the pressure I’ve seen about school sports has been at college level.

As for early voting, after three days of balloting, Denton County led Texas with 21% of its registered voters having cast ballots in person or by mail. The share of registered voters who had cast ballots was also noticeably high in Collin County, at 19%. Following Collin were Dallas County (15%) and Tarrant County (14%).

Add in Harris County (16%), Bexar County (14%), Travis County (16%) and El Paso County (14%), and all eight of the state’s most populous counties saw at least 14% of their registered voters cast ballots by the end of the first three days of early voting.

Through the first three days, Harris County led the way in cumulative in-person and mail voters, with 399,713. On Friday, Harris County posted its fourth straight day of turnout over 100,000, pushing its total ballot count to roughly 500,000.

I know you’re out in the boonies and may have addressed this and I missed it, but have you looked into a satellite internet system?

Yes. It is actually more expensive, as every company but two are now out of the business.

satelliteinternet.com

Free Installation

Viasat offers free installation to qualifying customers, a low equipment leasing fee of just $9.99 per month, and plenty of ways to contact customer service if you have any issues. To get free installation, customers need to have a credit check and receive a high score. If a customer’s credit score isn’t high enough to qualify for free installation, Viasat will charge a $99.99 installation fee.

Lots of choices

There are a variety of Viasat plans with different internet speeds, pricing, and data caps—although Viasat likes to call them “data thresholds” because your service won’t get cut off if you hit the limit.

If you reach the threshold before the end of the month, Viasat will deprioritize your data on the network. That means your connection will be much slower for the rest of the month. So, pick a plan that gives you enough priority data to last through the month.

Homelessness has ruined my credit forever; when I married my wife they lowered her credit rating.

HughesNet offers the best value on satellite internet because it gives you the most speed for the lowest price. Viasat does have one cheaper package than HughesNet, but the download speed on that package is only 12 Mbps, which falls below the FCC broadband standard. When you compare only satellite plans that meet the broadband standard, you could save over $10 per month by choosing HughesNet.

Data bonus zone

HughesNet data caps range from 10 GB per month up to 50 GB per month. If you hit your data limit, your service will still work, but it will be much slower for the rest of the month. So instead of experiencing download speeds of 25 Mbps like you normally would, your connection will be slowed to 1 to 3 Mbps, which may prevent you from streaming video content steadily. (Netflix’s lowest recommended speed is 1.5 Mbps, although they recommend at least 3 Mbps for standard definition streaming.) You can buy extra data if you need it, but you can save data by using the Bonus Zone. The Bonus Zone is during the off-peak hours between 2:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. You get 50 GB per month of Bonus Zone data with each plan.

Unfortunately I’ve never seen a satellite plan that wasn’t a complete disaster on multiple levels. Price, speeds, caps, and the impossible latency numbers…

Locally, people off the cable and DSL grids tend to find the next option is cellular modem/tethering. It’s not a great option, but if you have the signal then the plans are usually national deals, not locally-priced gouging. If you’re waaaaay off the map that may not be an option.

There are a couple of companies around here which sell direct tower-to-tower wireless, even to residential clients. The startup costs on that tend to be fearsome unless you luck out on LOS, though. And weather has a tendency to break things.

However, if you have cats who like to bat the toilet paper roll and make it spin, enrolling the paper onto the floor, putting the paper on the “wrong” way is more useful in preserving your supply.

Yes I’m in a cell dead zone (called western Nebraska). There is cell service in the towns.

We even have a cell tower only three blocks from my house, but the signal is oriented to provide service up and down US-26, so only a couple people in town can actually use the service (Viero is the provider).

A competitor to CenturyLink, a wireless company from Colorado named VistaBeam, came to town to set up wireless service from our water tower. The day after they completed installing their antennas, electrical boxes, and alarm system, the town was hit by a tornado and destroyed their equipment. They have not replaced it.

Assuming they do, you can only use the service if you have line-of-sight to the water tower (I don’t).

Their pricing is here.

Hopefully Starlink will be available soon.

SpaceX Indicates More Beta Testers Are Receiving Access to Starlink (PC Magazine, nine hours ago)

SpaceX’s presentation to the FCC also shows the company has introduced a software upgrade that can boost the satellite network’s speeds by 2.5 times from the previous speed tests

SpaceX is indicating more beta testers for Starlink have begun trying out the high-speed satellite internet network.

On Tuesday, the company gave an update to the Federal Communications Commission on its progress with developing the satellite broadband network. According to the presentation slides, Starlink has already “begun beta service for users across multiple US states.”

Whether the beta testers were recruited through starlink.com’s email newsletter, which anyone can sign up for, is unclear. But the same presentation references how SpaceX last month began offering access to Starlink for certain residents in Washington state who had their homes burnt down in the recent wildfires.

The company also notes Starlink has been “providing service to previously unserved students in rural areas.” This might include a Native American Tribe based in Washington state, which has also received early access to Starlink

The judiciary committee of the Unicameral got a stunning revelation about police training in Nebraska yesterday.

The Legislature’s Judiciary Committee was about four hours into a hearing on police reform when senators heard the revelation.

In Nebraska, police can be hired in small communities across the state and work a year with no training.

Brandon Lorenson, past president of the Police Officers Association of Nebraska and a Fremont Police Department detective, told the committee a person could begin working as a police officer without being certified or trained by the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island.

Training is expensive, and small cities and villages can’t really afford it. It is compounded by the fact when a village or city does get a trained police officer, they frequently move to a larger city with better pay.

(Our town marshal has been to the Law Enforcement Training Center; he is an exception for most small towns.)

But the discussion on officers working without training stunned some members of the committee.

Sen. Steve Lathrop: “So, I can carry a gun, wear a badge and enforce the law in Small Town, Nebraska … not going through the training academy at Grand Island first?”

Lorenson: “That is accurate.”

Lathrop asked again. Could he come from a job flipping burgers to being a sworn police office for a year before going to the police academy? And again, Lorenson said, yes, as long as the person was 21, and had a high school or general educational diploma.

There’s this thing that is happening that does not get enough though and reflection by talking head programs that fill our lives, though a few historians probably take note.

We are now living in a period that allows us to hear people from one, two, or three generations (or more) who lived before us.

And in the performing arts that means we now have genres that have a phenomenon that hadn’t happened in the past, a type of time travel if you will.

We now make cultural connections through sound and visual means, not just written, across decades, and now even centuries.

I’m not sure where this is leading, in regards to creativity in arts. I don’t know if someone 200 years from now will still have access to what was recorded in say the 1950’s, since we don’t know what sort of dystopias may lay before us. Perhaps we will continue on somehow with our high energy per capita lifestyles and our digital information will remain accessible.

If so, I wonder how music, dancing, and theatre will be at that time. Will everyone compare themselves to the greats of the 20th century? Or will people just give up doing new work, and just keep rewatching/rehearing old material?

An Anti-Choice Lady Made A Sitcom And It Is Like A D&C For Your Brain (Wonkette)

If there is anything conservatives love to complain about, it is the evils of Liberal Hollywood. They love to claim that there is some kind of evil conspiracy keeping conservatives from being big time movie stars (except for Mel Gibson, James Woods, and at least half the cast of Deliverance) and from writing and directing movies about things from their perspective. And that’s true. We very rarely see heartwarming films telling the stories of bakers who just want to be allowed to discriminate against gay people or hero insurance executives saving their companies from financial ruin by refusing to cover someone’s cancer treatment.

To that, I always say, “Well then make your own movies! Do your own things! What do you need our help and approval for? Whatever happened to personal responsibility?”

Well, sometimes they oblige.

Janet Porter is an anti-choice, anti-gay activist who is the president and founder of Faith2Action, a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group. She is best known for lobbying for so-called Heartbeat bills and Partial Birth Abortion bills and other dubiously described bills. Oh, and for being a spokesperson for Roy Moore during his 2017 campaign, because if there is anything a lady of upstanding Christian moral character loves, it is an adult man who gets kicked out of the mall for leching after teenage girls.

A Popular Christian Singer Was Accused of Sexual Abuse at Church Retreats (Friendly Atheist)

Chris Rice spent more than two decades as a popular Christian singer and songwriter, even winning a Dove Award (a.k.a. a Christian Grammy) in 1999. During his most prolific period, from 1995 to 2003, he also led worship at church retreats sponsored by Tates Creek Presbyterian Church in Kentucky.

The church’s former pastor had been accused of sexual abuse, so the leadership decided to hire investigators to look into the matter last year. In the process of gathering facts, they discovered that Rice himself had abused children during those retreats. They issued a statement [goes to Tate’s Creek Presbyterian Church] about the matter yesterday:

You are not safe from racist Christians anywhere.

Whites-only church eyes small town; residents fear becoming ‘hate capital of Minnesota’ (NBC)

There is no doubt that if a case went to the courts, conservatives would rule on the grounds of “religious freedom” over racism.

Plans by a little-known whites-only church to open in a small Midwestern town drew sharp opposition Wednesday from residents, who don’t want their community known as “the hate capital of Minnesota.”

Nearly 50 residents of Murdock filed into a town hall to largely voice opposition to the Asatru Folk Assembly (AFA) which wants to establish its Midwest regional center in the western Minnesota city that’s home to less than 300 people.

The AFA, based inBrownsville, California, calls its teachings an “expression of the native, pre-Christian spirituality of Europe.”

And on its website’s “Declaration of Purpose,” the church says teachings and membership are for those of strictly European bloodlines, saying, “Let us be clear: By European folks, we mean white people.”

Lifelong Murdock resident Pete Kennedy told lawmakers and neighbors on Wednesday that if AFA is allowed into town, the community would be known as “the hate capital of Minnesota.”

Kennedy told NBC News on Thursday that he fears other discriminatory groups could follow AFA into town and permanently tarnish Murdock’s reputation.

If you explore all their base you can find a hidden corridor filled with cat corpses.

This case is a bit more complicated. The church existed before the town planning commission did, as a Presbyterian church. As such, when the planning commission laid out zoning for the town, the church was excepted from residential zoning in that area because it was there first.

The church closed many years ago; as such, any new purchaser can only use the church as a residence (it must now comply with the zoning regulations).

The town government is expected to vote on the zoning issue in a few days; the new church is confident the town will grant them the permit. Failing that, they intend to take a town of 300 people as far up the court system as they can afford, and they have a lot more money than a Minnesota village.

Issac Asimov’s “Foundation,” “Foundation and Empire,” and “Second Foundation.”

The Foundation were the psychohistorians who predicted the fall of the sclerotic Galactic Empire by a series of events which could be predicted by the behaviour of masses of large numbers of people.

The psychohistorians themselves were also puppeteers who helped guide the course of events, until a single person came along that their mathematics could not predict and upset the whole balance.

Another issue the racist church can use is the federal Religious Freedom Restoration Act. That act specifically prohibits using zoning regulations to regulate religious activities.

This is similar to the case a former member of this group who is no longer here asked about a mosque here in Nebraska, which I researched for him including putting in calls to the mosque and talking to CAIR.

In that case, the mosque wished to expand its parking lot to handle increased attendance at the mosque. They already owned the land on which they wanted to expand their parking lot.

The city first tried to oppose it on the grounds that they would have to do a traffic study, widen the street, and install a traffic light, which the city said they couldn’t afford. The mosque offered a compromise in that they said they would pay for all of that.

They then said it would increase traffic in a residential area and the residents would object. Aside from that not being a legal argument, the residents themselves called BS on the city.

The city then pulled out zoning regulations which said that land couldn’t be used to build a parking lot, which is different zoning than a church or mosque.

The mosque then pulled out the RFRA and threatened to go after the city in court. The city backed down and the parking lot went forward, along with the street-widening.

Not Asimov.

I’m thinking Michael Flynn was the author.

That book would be “In the Country of the Blind” (1990) though he called it “cliology.”

First paragraphs:

Sarah Beaumont escaped from the modern American ghetto to become a successful journalist, programmer and real estate investor. However, while investigating an idea for developing her latest real estate purchase, she makes a stunning discovery: since the 19th century the course of history has been under the control of one of more groups of powerful and mysterious “cliologists” who use mathematics to predict the future. Like the “psychohistory” of Isaac Asimov’s Foundation stories, cliology is supposed to be able to make use of mathematical analysis of sociological factors in such a way that our 19th century mathematicians were able to predict World War II. Unfortunately, in trying to get America ready to fight the Nazis, they accidentally started the Civil War!

Only a small portion of the book takes place in the 19th century when these early cliologists use their Babbage Analytical Engines to make their predictions. Most takes place “now” while Sarah avenges the death of her friends at the hands of the cliologists.

Agreed. I was mistaken in them being Christians. Further reading indicates they claim to be following a pre-Christian Scandinavian religious faith which is contorted wildly from the original. This version only arose in the XIX Century in Austria, then imported into the USA by people like David Lane (he of the infamous fourteen words).

They also have entanglements with the Christian Identity movement (the racist belief that whites are the real Jews described in the Bible, descended from British Israelism, which is not explicitly racist).

Sounds a bit like the bene gesserits in Dune.

re: #199 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

I was a practicing Wiccan for about 5 yrs a long time ago. There was a group of assorted pagans that met at a bookstore(telling you this was indeed awhile ago)and a couple of the guys were Asatru. They were really nice, but very stuck in gender roles and man as provider stuff. I didn’t see the racism, but the group itself was entirely white. This is suburbia after all.

I met quite a few nice people in that group of various neopagan beliefs. But like all religions, eventually a hierarchy forms and you end up with leaders and followers. I left religion entirely because of it. But, one thing I never saw or experienced was a hate of any religion or non believers. Unlike some Christian counterparts. Most of the people I knew, our group grew to around 50, were actually kind and generous. We had cops, full time moms, a doctor and a couple of nurses, a few small business owners, and yes all white. Not perfect people, but decent humans. The owner of the bookstore(a chain store called Border’s Books), was a Christian and had no issue with us meeting there.

I think the issue is more people who wear their beliefs or lack of beliefs,on their sleeves. I’ve lived here for around 25 yrs, and when my son was little, the moms at school had a thing about what church people attended. If you said none, you got excluded from their mommy club but I never gave a shit, I was too busy raising my kid. Beyond that, I have never had religion come up with other people(outside of my jerk face family) in day to day life. Again, I am a very white human, so I miss a lot of things others experience so everyone’s mileage may vary. I can see if I was in people’s faces about their beliefs and my lack of religion made me superior somehow, that wouldn’t go over, but in my life in general it isn’t a thing. There are churches and Christian schools all over the place here, people tend to cluster around their own communities and find their niches. One thing I have noticed over the last decade or so is those church parking lots aren’t as full on Sundays. One church about a mile down the road went bankrupt and has sat empty for a year with a construction project to build a larger parking lot abandoned. This is GA, and at least in north metro Atlanta, the church thing has lost some significance. Maybe we’re becoming a little more aware and accepting, it’s hard to say. The divisions now are liberal vs conservative, and religion does play a part in that but it’s more stupid conservative stereotypes about other aspects of liberalism that’s at issue.

All anecdotal, YMMV etc.

Southern Poverty Law Center has a very long article on the Neo-Volk or Asatru.

Like most bigot groups, they couch their bigotry in dogwhistles.

I’ve run into a few Wiccans and I don’t recall any one of them being a bigot. They mostly just want to be left alone.

I wonder how many members there are in these groups and if they combine with other militia types like we’re seeing now. I could see that happening in some parts of the country. I just never associated the Ásatrú guys I met with anything like that. One guy didn’t even own guns,he had swords and different kinds of bows and other stuff I didn’t recognize, blades on various handles, even a mace. He collected and made stuff in his own forge and all that.

I wonder how that group of people would go over now, as far as welcomed into a shop for meetups and stuff. The suburbs here aren’t as white as they were then, and liberal vs conservative wasn’t as contentious and mean. Racism has always had a home here though and that is bigger than conservative vs liberal. We have a fair share of misogyny and then some too, a lot of that was put in the open when Hillary was running for President, and it’s been transferred to Kamala. Georgia is a weird place to live.

Not Asimov.

I’m thinking Michael Flynn was the author.

In Flynn’s “The country of the blind” the problem wasn’t that the cabal were incompet, the problem was that they were divided, partly because it turned out to be “steam engine time” for psychohistory and partly because psychohistorical effects also applied to people attempting to manipulate others using psychohistorical techniques.

So it’s the routine and structure that is appealing, not necessarily the actual church and religious aspects. That makes sense, it also might help explain those less full parking lots on Sundays.

A lot of people have complained for a long time on how much money is spent on political campaigns, particularly the presidential campaign.

The Washington Post reported that the estimated amount spent in 2016 on the presidential race, primaries and all, was $6.5 billion (according to Open Secrets).

washingtonpost.com

This kind of falls into the fallacy of large numbers. That’s about $28 per person in the United States.

It also ignores how frightfully expensive radio and television advertising is in some markets. It costs a fuquetonne more to put an advert on a television station in New York City than it does in Scottsbluff.

I’m all for public financing of elections, and getting rid of private funding to the greatest extent possible. The devil would be in the details of how you ensure candidates receive a fair amount of money to run a campaign (plus avoiding running afoul of Freedom of Association for political parties).

E.W. Jackson Says Nancy Pelosi’s Prayers Are ‘A Blasphemy Against God’ (Right Wing Watch)

Apparently prayers only count if you’re a conservative.

(with audio from Jackson’s programme.)

On Friday’s episode of his “The Awakening” radio program, right-wing pastor E.W. Jackson railed against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and declared that her prayers are “blasphemy against God.”

Jackson was outraged by Pelosi’s proposal to establish a congressional commission that would have the power to remove a president from office under the 25th Amendment.

“Can Nancy Pelosi get any crazier?” Jackson fumed. “Nancy Pelosi is wasting everybody’s time with this nonsense.”

“Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speak,” Jackson added, quoting a passage from Luke 6. “A good person out of the good treasure of their heart brings forth good things, and an evil person out of the evil treasure of the heart brings forth evil things. I think we can say case closed as to what is in Nancy Pelosi’s heart.”

“She talks about when she prays for the president,” he continued. “Folks, as far as I’m concerned—I’m serious about this—I wouldn’t want Nancy Pelosi praying for me. I really wouldn’t. I really wouldn’t because I just believe that’s a blasphemy against God. I’m serious about that. I believe that’s just a blasphemy against God. You better pray for yourself and ask God to forgive you. That’s what you better do. And ask God to cleanse you of all that mess in your head and in your heart. That’s what you better do. You better ask Jesus to save you.”

No matter what the original patent says, as a practical matter, it doesn’t really matter which way you hang your toilet paper. It’s like arguing over exactly how well or rare you prefer to have your steak or what sauce(s) you put on it. It is utterly insignificant.

However, if you have cats who like to bat the toilet paper roll and make it spin, enrolling the paper onto the floor, putting the paper on the “wrong” way is more useful in preserving your supply.

Depending on the cat.

Tuxedo Cat simply varied how she played with it. Hanging “over the top” she batted at the roll itself to get it to unroll. Hanging “behind the roll” she batted/pulled at the part hanging down and got it to unroll that way.

Tigerlily’s approach is simply to pull the roll off the dispenser and then rake the entire roll with her rear claws. (See picture below where the roll is just to the left of L.C.)

So… the thing is that as president, there are a whole lot of things which follow in his wake (including the pool reporters!) and I just don’t think it’s possible for him to do that without the entire country learning immediately. Which would either end in the 25th or breaking the national Republican party permanently.

On the neopagan thing there is a spectrum there and they are not all obsessed with bloodlines and essentially racist divides. Though if you see “folk” in their name it implies they are on the racist side of the split there.

One of my best friends is a self-proclaimed neopagan. Though I don’t recall many conversations concerning it or delving into the background beliefs much. (His wife isn’t, and my guess is their daughter is being brought up agnostic/atheist/areligious essentially given some other factors.)

When he was blogging I did follow some of his posted links to other people and acquaintances of his who posted a lot more pagan and Asatru materials. And a number of them would simply dodge on the discussion of the universalist vs folk split. Possibly wanting to keep such conflict internal… or avoiding admitting what they really were being.

Via Right Wing Watch:

The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, now led by Billy Graham’s right-wing-activist son Franklin Graham, has turned the October issue of its “Decision” magazine into a virtual 38-page campaign brochure for President Donald Trump and the Republican Party. Franklin Graham hosted a “prayer march” on the National Mall on Sept. 26, the same day a group of End Times “prophets” hosted a rally calling for national repentance and revival.

The over-the-top propagandistic tone is set on the cover, which features a heroic image of Trump and a photo of Democratic presidential Joe Biden caught with a lost puppy look on his face.

Franklin Graham introduces the issue with a column under the headline, “Blessed in the nation whose God is the Lord,” a scriptural quote used often by Christian nationalists who insist the U.S. must “return” to God. Graham describes the Trump presidency as a “wonderful season of progress for the cause of religious freedom and the moral and Biblical values we hold dear,” and he warns that if Trump loses, all that “wonderful” progress could be quickly and permanently reversed.

The magazine warns that religious freedom is on the ballot, asking, “Will Christians remain free, or will the government impose a godless, immoral social agenda upon them?”

The Religious Freedom Restoration Act explicitly prohibits using zoning laws to regulate religious activity. You may thank Chuck Schumer for introducing this bill in 1993.

I’m not a lawyer so I cannot say if they have a legal recourse. Subsequent court cases successfully argued the RFRA did not apply to states, only the Federal government.

State courts were ordered to follow this rubric:

Strict scrutiny
Religious liberty can only be limited for a compelling government interest
If religious liberty is to be limited, it must be done in the least restrictive manner possible

That said, the RFRA was successfully used in Hobby Lobby v Burwell to deny women contraceptive coverage through their insurance in arguments against the ACA.

I suppose it depends on how much money these asshats have to push a case through the courts. That said, a village of less than three hundred people doesn’t have a lot to spend trying to fend them off.

So… the thing is that as president, there are a whole lot of things which follow in his wake (including the pool reporters!) and I just don’t think it’s possible for him to do that without the entire country learning immediately. Which would either end in the 25th or breaking the national Republican party permanently.

Now, if he decides to get on a private jet on the 21st, that’s a whole different problem. The dozen or whatever SecServ agents can’t control him at all, though again they sure could notify their new boss really quickly.

As though Trump gives a shit about breaking the GOP.

Debate commission announces topics for final debate between Trump and Biden

The Commission on Presidential debates announced on Friday the six topics for the second and final debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic nominee Joe Biden set to take place next week.

The topics are: “Fighting COVID-19,” “American Families,” “Race in America,” “Climate Change,” “National Security” and “Leadership.”
The final debate between Trump and Biden is scheduled to take place on October 22 from 9 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. ET in Tennessee. The format is the same as the first debate: Each segment will last about 15 minutes, and the candidates will have two minutes to respond after the moderator, NBC’s Kristen Welker, opens each segment with a question. Welker will then use the rest of the time in the segment to facilitate further discussion on the topic.

Sounds Like Hate: Meet the women behind the podcast investigating the proliferation of hate and extremism in modern America (Goes to the Southern Poverty Law Center)

Not since the civil rights movement has America seen the level of racism and bigotry that’s now coursing through the mainstream and tearing at the seams of our nation. But unlike that era, extremists who promote hate are now able to recruit young people and spread radicalizing propaganda through the power of social media, a tool their forebears could never have imagined.

To help people understand the threat this radicalization poses and the impact it’s having on America society, the Southern Poverty Law Center launched its first original podcast, Sounds Like Hate, in August. The audio documentary series, produced and hosted by award-winning journalists/producers/filmmakers Geraldine Moriba and Jamila Paksima, explores the dangerous realities of hate in modern America and the ways people have escaped the far-right extremist movement.

The Republicans will stop at nothing to hold on to power. I fully expect to see Trump Thugs go all in to suppress the vote. And when they do I hope Joe blows the dust off of Section 2 of the 14th Amendment to punish Republicans.

Representatives shall be apportioned among the several states according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each state, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the executive and judicial officers of a state, or the members of the legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such state, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such state.

Trump will have to try and kick over the table and get the outcome decided invalid and taken to the courts or House of Representatives if he wants to have a chance of not losing.

Thing is, we have never been in a situation like this before where the incumbent knows that he faces multiple criminal charges as soon as he loses Executive immunity. I will still vote for Biden, since I will assume that Jr. was squirreled away by the Russians or some other foreign enemy, and has effectively gone over to them. If the Kremlin can turn the John Birch Society into their loyal tools (and they have) they can surely do this.

You are not safe from racist Christians anywhere.

Whites-only church eyes small town; residents fear becoming ‘hate capital of Minnesota’ (NBC)

There is no doubt that if a case went to the courts, conservatives would rule on the grounds of “religious freedom” over racism.

(more at NBC News)

Just going to point out that the “Asatru Folk Assembly” is not a Christian sect. Rather, they use the notion of the Norse pantheon to actually push a “volkish” (read: white) religion.

en.wikipedia.org

Now, given that information, I think it’s less likely that a conservative court would vote for this, because AFA is obviously not Christian. However, that’s not a zero possibility.

So a few GOP suddenly decided to speak about how they could not bear the last 4 years of Trump after supporting him, his politically involved family, and toeing the party line at all costs. It wasn’t until overwhelming public favor for Biden they had a voice or opinion that in any way contradicted that fucking asshole. No, they were happy to go along about Hillary’s emails and hating the shit out of Obamacare, fucking the little guy, fucking the planet, and buy into every QAnon outrage in front of them.

The “brave” faces of the GOP areonly pretending to be annoyed because they know if they lose the presidential race, lose the House, lose the Senate, they will be obsolete to the majority of America. The GOP will be a failed experiment, and no amount of Rush Limbaugh or Fox News or the Ghost of Jerry Falwell is going to resurrect them because they no longer resonate with the majority - the majority - of the country.

The tipping point they’ve worried about? It’s here. And once it’s here, it isn’t going back.

Which is why they will resort to anything, regardless of legality or morality, to put off that inevitability…

I blame NBC for not being clearer about this. *rolls eyes*

re: #248 NetworkKed

So… the thing is that as president, there are a whole lot of things which follow in his wake (including the pool reporters!) and I just don’t think it’s possible for him to do that without the entire country learning immediately. Which would either end in the 25th or breaking the national Republican party permanently.

Now, if he decides to get on a private jet on the 21st, that’s a whole different problem. The dozen or whatever SecServ agents can’t control him at all, though again they sure could notify their new boss really quickly.

Years ago, I predicted the way this presidency is going to end.

Black SUVs with lights and sirens chasing Trump’s plane down the runway, as Ivanka, Don Jr. and Eric run after it, sobbing “Daddy daddy please don’t leave us!” as the crates full of money are thrown out the door, scattering bills all over.

The Trump plane lumbers into the air and starts heading for international waters, where a squadron of MiGs wait to escort it. Minutes later, the F-35s scrambled from Anacostia-Bolling zoom overhead …

Note that apostrophe abuse is nothing new.

Memories of Ambridge PA before the Civil Rights Act was passed when blacks and Jews could not enter the JC Penney’s store because it was “restricted”.

They were allowed in the Sears store.

Multiple businesses were “restricted” as they were free to choose what people they could exclude.

Blacks were not allowed to use the borough swimming pool.

Blacks were restricted in where they were allowed to live—on First Street by Sewickley Crick.

Chinese were restricted to restaurant or laundry work.

Greeks were restricted to the vending machine business.

Mills employed blacks to work in the hell of the coke ovens.

When the Civil Rights Act passed in 1964, our then Congressman Frank Clark was only one of two Northern Democrats who voted against the act.

Big backlash when that law was filibustered in the Senate and George Wallace got a lot of write in votes against LBJ in the primary. Wallace got more votes in the GOP primary than Rockefeller.

More proof that the “good old days” sucked.

Stop giving them the benefit of the doubt and pretending it’s mere ignorance or blindness. They’re chasing these things to exclusion because that’s the lesson they took from ‘16. The slavishness toward Trump and the GOP isn’t ignorance, it’s learned. The idea that Dem ‘scandals’ are the real import requiring weeks upon weeks of coverage is something they’ve fully and openly embraced, from how glowingly they describe their ‘16 coverage. They have gone out of their way to give Trump even more leverage and leeway because they convinced themselves they were just too goddamn hard on him and they need to be even MORE fair, more forgiving, more devoted to the real legitimate forever rulers of the US and more damning of Dem usurpers.

Can people just fucking get this?

As in previous weeks, there are now over a hundred localized city protests currently taking place across Israel as the 2nd national COVID lockdown is expected to end in the coming days.
The “Crime Minister” protests were primarily fixated on the fact that the country was being led by a Prime Minister under criminal investigation, but with growing anger over how the lockdown has been handled, it’s now expanded to include that failure as well.

The stark example of what happened in California haunts the imaginations of all the white Christian extremists. Prop 187 was a pure expression of what metastasized into the core of Trumpism: “F the brown people.”

The 2020 election may well be what happened in the late 90s in California - the relegation of the GOP into a permanent minority party, loud & screeching, but ultimately powerless.

And yeah, they’ll try to gin up tricks from time to time - the recall against Gray Davis & installation of Gov. Arnie - but as long as Democratic voters ride herd on the extreme fringes in a way that the GOP has never bothered to do, they could be in for a long, long stretch of irrelevancy…

last month, Britain’s Got Talent featured a Black Lives Matter dance number.

Diversity take to the stage with POWERFUL Black Lives Matter performance | Semi-Finals | BGT 2020

Lots of complaints, but the TV station, the show’s producers, and the UK’s FCC-equivalent all strongly supported the dance troupe.

Just 4% of the 24,500 complaints were made in the immediate aftermath of the programme being aired, suggesting these were people who were offended by the original broadcast after watching it live.

The majority were filed over the following weeks, following repeated news stories about the original number of complaints.

But I shouldn’t put it entirely on the voters. A lot of congressional Democrats will refuse to understand there are no resonable Republicans for them to reach across the aisle and work with, so they won’t abolish the filibuster, and will pass nothing except 2 reconciliation bills while they battle over government shutdowns, and the whole disgraceful shitshow of dysfunctional government will turn off huge numbers of voters. I hope I’m wrong about that.

I wouldn’t support Hobby Lobby if they were giving away free water in the desert. I’ve been in the local store a few times and their overt religious horseshit is a freak show under glass, nevermind their ideas about contraception and buying stolen artificats because they have that much money to throw around.

Nope, can’t stand ‘em.
