What strategy? Storming off the stage when they cut his mic for speaking out of turn or off topic?

Sigh, Nate Silver has us once again as the most right-wing place in the country.

He has NE-3 to the right of Wyoming in his forecast. (Biden gets a 25.7% share of the votes.)

projects.fivethirtyeight.com

He has NE-2 as a 1.3% chance of being the tipping point in the election.

Hasn’t someone here already mentioned that Trump could still yell his invectives to distract Biden? The mic might not be on to amplify his voice but he could still be heard at least by Biden and the moderator.

BBIAW. Meat world stuff to do. First on the list is to drop off my partners ballot (still recovering, but not taking foolish risks) and then go cast my ballot. Sadly there will be no Blue Wave in Idaho being it is redder than Communist China. Biden/Harris 2020 for both of us though.

If he wants to yell off-mic like a mental patient on nationwide TV, let him. It’ll go a long way in terms of making him look likeable and friendly.

But not his ardent fan bois. That is what will piss him off the most. Being seen on National T.V. (and other media) silently yelling at someone IS NOT a good look. Now I am out for a bit. L8R Lizards

While Ken Burns’ National Parks series is a joy, there’s additional series relating to the national parks that I’d recommend.

My dad was on blood thinners, and used to bruise like a peach in a similar fashion. He had no particular health issue—just old. One isn’t like the others. What’s up with Rhode Island?

No one really knows. Here’s Boston Globe article suggesting some of it might be an artifact of testing at colleges:

Some of the increase can be attributed to increased testing, especially at the Rhode Island colleges and universities experiencing outbreaks. In August, for example, there were an average of 5,228 tests conducted per day. That rose to an average of 8,294 in September, and as of Monday, the October average is 10,053 tests per day.

That said, I think a lot of it was fueled by colleges. Providence College had a major outbreak.

The number of cases of COVID-19 at Providence College has risen to 205.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, 1,598 students were tested, with 36 positive cases and a positivity rate of 2.2%.

Gov. Gina Raimondo on Wednesday blamed “incredibly selfish” PC students heading from party to party without wearing masks for Rhode Island landing on the list of states whose residents cannot travel to Connecticut, New York and New Jersey without quarantining for 14 days upon their arrival.

Fringe is lightweight, but good for bingeing as there are so many episodes. Season 2 and later are better than season 1.

“Bad sexual judgment”? LOL

There’s a time and place for masturbation. A Zoom meeting, a professional Zoom meeting with one’s colleagues no less, is - quite assuredly - not the time and place.

Jeff can fap in the privacy of his home to his heart’s content, or if he’s feeling a bit exhibitionistic, he can indulge himself at his friendly neighborhood jack shack.

The series really has nothing in common with the film except the location. Each season is a completely new story, and I think it’s one of the best ongoing shows.

I haven’t watched Fargo in a couple of season, but I wonder if they’re going to do like America Horror Story did, which started off as an anthology type show, but then pulled everything together in later seasons. (AHS is another one that I haven’t watched in a few seasons, but really enjoyed when I did)

I was going to say something similar. I get that people get off on different thrills, but you can find a more appropriate setting that gives you the same thrill if that’s really what you’re into. And if it’s just an overriding urge to get off, cool your jets and wait for the meeting to end, then take a bathroom break. Sheesh.

Isekai:
Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World

Not exactly an isekai anime but a lot of fun — Bofuri or, (deep breath) “I Don’t Want to Get Hurt, so I’ll Max Out My Defense”. First-time gamer girl breaks new VR game, breaks the other players and goes on to break the game developers too. Sweet, funny, horrific in a hilarious way now and then. It’s a big-grin series.

RomCom Series:
Toradora!

This series has the best fight scene in an anime ever, even though it’s a high-school rom-com, between two characters who have politely loathed each other for ages and finally they just say “fuck it” and go for it, hammer and tongs (episode 16 if you want to look it up).

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai and the movie Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl

Finally, a male rom-com character who isn’t a blubbering mass of jelly when he encounters a GURRRL! I love the fact he ends up sleeping with the girl in episode 2 and it only gets better after that.

Other:
Plastic Memories

Go on, rip my heart out and stomp on the flaming remains, why don’t ya?

The pomp and ceremony celebrating fake achievement is what they do to keep Trump happy. It will be morbidly curious to see how distant his staff and advisors kept him from reality. Which would be easy to do since Trump has no interest in being briefed, informed, or making decisions that take thought and might involve self-doubt.

Which all results in a rudderless executive branch in charge of a major nation, simmering internal discord (which will probably not go away anytime soon), one of the major parties sinking itself further and further into exploitable corruption, and a very happy Putin.

The dirty NRA money is everywhere, and for McTurtle, I’m sure that little aluminum plant deal in KY greased a few palms. Plus his wife running interference for her family’s shipping company. Plus whatever other fucking scams he’s got his nasty-looking paws in.

Yeah Carter I believe famously appeared with George Wallace and Coretta King. Definitely a weird map.

Before 1980, I think Texas had only gone to the Republicans like 3 or 4 times since the Civil War. But the realignment was likely underway by 1972, with 1976 being an outlier because of Watergate.

Stonekettle has a new blog post up, called Oblivion, which links off of your comment here. I swear, this one has to be his best. Doesn’t take on a complicated issue, but tears the skin off a centimeter at a time!

I was indicating that Bofuri isn’t an isekai compared to, say, Overlord (which is still waiting to have another season announced now the light novel series has enough material with the release of volume 14).

I couldn’t engage with Re:Zero and bailed on it after, I think, one episode with the Eight Deadly Words (I don’t care what happens to these people). Ditto for Konosuba, I’ve got a low tolerance for stupid=funny storylines. My only real exposure to them is in the parody Isekai Quartet series and I mostly watched that to see Ains Ooal Gown and Tanya bonding over their problem subordinates.

If there’s another Isekai Quartet series it would be fun if Maple and Sally from Bofuri ended up in the mysterious high school with the rest of the cast members from the other series.

Mr. Gingrich said. “You’re totally poor. You’re in a school that is failing with a teacher that is failing. I’ve tried for years to have a very simple model. Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school. The right wing obsession with pedophilia and other sex crime has always been obvious projection. You don’t habitually focus that kind of attention, without evidence or proof in most cases, for any other reason. It has been coming out for years at lower levels like local churches, but it is now becoming obvious at the national level.

The GOP is pervs and pedos all the way down.

I think there is a rational explanation for this. These kinds of offenses are intimately intertwined with malfunctioning masculinity, especially frustrated dominance. The Republican Party has branded itself as the party of “alpha males” and anti-feminist resistance, and therefore of men who fear strong women. It is going to attract the frustrated, the insecure, the inadequate, and the mis-wired by feeding them a ready made scapegoat for their very personal shortcomings.

I don’t know how Facebook works, but it could be reported as defamation per se (goes to FindLaw)

Generally, for defamation per se, the statements are presumed harmful whereas for defamation per quod the damage must be proven. Most but not all states recognize the distinction between these two types of defamation.

Hunter Biden is not a public figure. Making him a public figure so you can slander him doesn’t count.

The problem with suing (or filing charges since in some states defamation per se is a criminal offence) is that it brings more attention to this. On the other hand, a really hard smackdown by the courts is an object lesson to conservatives.

The out-on-bail former campaign chairman for President Donald Trump, Steve Bannon, teased the coming “storm” gathering around Hunter Biden to viewers of his YouTube show Tuesday night.

“It’s going to be… It’s going to be a storm,” Bannon said. “The storm clouds are around the Biden camp. The storm clouds are around the Biden camp. A gathering storm, and they are doing a disastrous job.”

Best way to understand it is that in their understanding, sex crimes are the wrong people having sex the wrong way.

They seem like hypocrites because they can never say aloud that they don’t see people as equal, but vertically and horizontally distinguished by caste. But if you apply the logic of caste to their behavior you can understand the pattern of what they do but will not let others do.

It’s antithetical to modern understandings of what a person is…not just pre-civil rights or pre-Enlightenment, but Before Christ…so to participate in society they have to constantly code their language, appropriate intellectual frameworks while not engaging with the actual ideas. Hence the anti-intellectualism, the contempt for formal episteme, but such great emphasis on the aesthetic manifold of God, Reason, Science, etc.

When I am talking someday to my grandkids one of the hardest things to explain will be how I once supported Rudy Giuliani.

I can recall a time when he was controversial but not a raving, raging twatwaddle.

Heck, there was a time when I admired Chris Christie, like when he worked with Obama on Hurricane Sandy preparation and relief, and when he really gave to people who criticized his choice of a Muslim judge.

This ain’t it, Collegehumor. I’m tired of people pretending like abstaining from the presidential vote (not local or state legislature), isn’t a legitimate form of protest against an establishment. I will be voting, but shaming voters instead of the politicians that make the voters feel trapped and alienated is kinda gross, ngl.

Then the clown gets to operate on your country, Andrew.

And it’s not a legitimate form of protest. It’s not a protest at all.

And so-called voter shaming is absolutely appropriate. “I don’t vote” means “I don’t care.”

The entire reason Rudy dumped that propaganda laptop was to distract from his own malfeasance. It’s how Trumpworld operates. Project crimes on your enemies while doing the very malfeasance yourself.

Perhaps you’ll notice the theme here. Nearly every offense that Trump accuses Biden of (usually falsely), Trump himself is guilty of the same, but worse. Psychologists call this projection.

When a Dem wins for president (Obama, Clinton) the average is still +9 for the R

tied is a shellacking

ps - Bill clinton came the closest losing by ‘only’ 4 and 5 points
obama lost by 16 and 11, for some reason i cant put my finger on

In the first half of my Naval service, the Navy issued parking stickers which sorted enlisted (red) and officer (blue) so everyone would be aware of the officers (salute the car while it was driven by the officer’s teenage son, pass by lines, &c).

When they went to the new DOD stickers and got rid of the Navy’s stickers, the Navy continued the tradition with command stickers that were blue or red.

The appearance of a thing is substituted for the thing itself.
The symbol is detached from the concepts it symbolizes.
Texts no longer exist to be read as a whole, but to mined for soundbites or simply invoked, unopened, as a source of authority.

NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials Wednesday redefined what counts as close contact with someone with COVID-19 to include briefer but repeated encounters.

For months, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said close contact meant spending a solid 15 minutes within 6 feet of someone who tested positive for coronavirus. On Wednesday, the CDC changed it to a total of 15 minutes or more — so shorter but repeated contacts that add up to 15 minutes over a 24-hour period now count.

LINCOLN - Today, Governor Pete Ricketts issued a statement following news that Nebraska once again has the lowest unemployment rate in the United States, at 3.5%.

“The resilience of Nebraskans in 2020 has been extraordinary,” said Gov. Ricketts. “We’ve made major strides to grow Nebraska after the challenges created by the coronavirus. Earlier this week, the State announced additional grants to help businesses in industries hard-hit by the effects of the pandemic, such as restaurants, hotels, barber shops, beauty salons, event centers, movie theaters, and others. This assistance will help to continue the strong recovery we’ve seen in recent months.”

“non-voters are never targeted by dems”?

What kind of coded ad-hominem bullshit is this?

The Nebraska Democratic Party sent cards of all candidates and the party’s voter guide to every household in the state.

I don’t know who that person is, but here they’re targeting Republicans and Libertarians as well as registered independents.

That and such things as television, radio, and newspaper advertising targets every reader, not just Democrats.

The Biden campaign is putting adverts into the Microsoft Solitaire game on Windows 10.

Aaaannnnddd—tonight’s Jaime/Lindsey debate is canceled.

Lindsey’s bullshit excuse:

“The debate is postponed due to Senate votes in Washington, including the nomination of Judge Amy Coney Barrett and COVID-19 relief. We are working to find a new date, but it’s a problem that could have been avoided if Jaime Harrison had not ducked debating Senator Graham for all of September.”

Jaime’s response:

“The last debate was canceled because Lindsey Graham refused to take a COVID test, now he’s too busy playing political games in Washington to let the people of South Carolina hear from him,” Harrison said. “South Carolinians statewide are suffering from the ongoing pandemic, and the people of the Palmetto State deserve to hear from both candidates on the issues that matter most. I’m ready and willing to debate, while Lindsey Graham runs from the people of South Carolina.”

Go Jaime!

Edit to add:

The Harrison campaign says they have offered 12 dates to reschedule the debate, but say so far, the Graham campaign has not committed to a date.

polls indicate what is expected to happen (especially if the election were held today).
in 2016, the polls missed the last 10 day swing (post comey) in 3 key states and also missed accounting for the education factor overall.

those specific issues have been addressed

sure elections can tend to tighten

but if the polls are accurate and representative, the election cant be much closer than the polls indicate (outside the moe)

either polling models are accurate and representative or they’re not.

Ok that video made me cry. That is a good man right there.

If the phone calls and emails I got before our state registration deadline are any indication, there was a lot of outreach to non registered people. In Georgia. All from the democrats. I have never in all the years I have been here seen anything like it. Tons of mailers telling people where and how to register, numbers to call if you had questions etc.

The Republicans did little outreach if any and their mailers are still all about scary socialist liberals taking away your freedom and raising taxes and making you pay an extra 2k a year for insurance via taxation. If I could get free and good quality healthcare for that little money a year I would do a happy dance. If Dems are doing it here, I know something has changed.

Never Trust a Never Trumper — The Saga Continues (Driftglass)

What do I always say, kids?

That you can never trust a Never Trumper.

And why do I say it?

Because there is no such thing as a “former” hard-core Republican.

As I have written before, a causal, occasional Republican voter? Sure. They can kick the habit. Over the course of many years I’ve voted for Republicans once or twice on down-ticket races or in board elections where I knew the person and they were extraordinarily well-qualified. Hell, in my misspent youth I also voted for John Anderson, because Reagan was clearly dangerous, but Carter wasn’t pure enough for my noble and rarefied political tastes.

But this it not so for the hard-core Republican. Because until they join Ronald Reagan in Republican Heaven, they will always be junkies who, given the slightest opportunity to rationalize themselves into just one more little taste, will backslide right back into their bad habits every fucking time.

The press is really running with this.

Francis becomes 1st pope to endorse same-sex civil unions (AP)

No, AP, he did not. Just like he didn’t “endorse” atheists a few years ago which all y’all also breathlessly reported on.

The specific claim from Pope Francis in his interview with the Italian newspaper which I’ll bet none of you actually read was along the lines of many “secular” states recognise same-sex marriage for the purposes of healthcare or other reasons, and on an individual basis the Church needs to look into that and see if it should support the laws (not the people involved).

In the very first question in that Italian interview he stated marriage is between one man and one woman (completely counterfactual to what the Bible says).

There is a difference between the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony, which is for the Church to grant according to its own rules, and the civil status of marriage, which is about property, inheritance and hospital/prison visitation rights.

The Pope is simply stating that the latter should be open to all couples. He certainly is not talking about opening up the Sacrament of Matrimony to same-sex couples.

I understand that, but apparently the credulous American press does not. Atheists went through this when the press claimed the Pope was “endorsing” us as well. The Holy See clarified that; I imagine they’ll clarify this. Then the press will forget they ever mentioned any of this. They need their shiny objects.

Pope Francis assures atheists: You don’t have to believe in God to go to heaven (The Independent, 5 October 2015, which goes against everything in the Catholic Catechism)

He did say it was better to be an atheist than a hypocritical Christian.

Aside from Jennifer Rubin, five days ago Driftglass went after another never-Trumper, Tom Nichols:

You might remember teevee’s Tom Nichols from such previous hits as “You fuckers will get no repentance from me, because your party had a hand in this too!” and “I never knew the Republican Party was full of Republicans because I lived in Massachusetts”.

Well earlier this week (or maybe it was in 1987 now that linear time has left the building), ol’ Tom dropped in on his fellow teevee Conservative, Charlie Sykes for some good, clean, Never Trump antics. They laughed and joked and rolled their eyes and called Trump various names, which is all jolly good fun.

Then, while Charlie Sykes chuckled along, Tom Nichols began doing that thing he does where suddenly his Republican Party completely disappears and all of the sins and crimes of his party are laid at the feet of a group called “Americans”.

Nichols: But there is a there is a serious point underneath all of this which is that all that…that discussion that Americans are tired of corruption, Americans are tired of the elites, Americans are tired of the inside deals, uh, Americans are tired of what goes on in the rooms they don’t know about that turns out to be nonsense. Americans have an incredibly high tolerance for corruption.

On some level Tom I’m sure knows this is a lie: after all, Democrats twice elected the virtually scandal-and-corruption-free Barack Obama. And Ol’ Tom’s party, the Republican, reacted with eight years of unhinged racist hysteria and then elected the King of the Birthers. Who, to no one’s surprise who bothered paying any attention to anything, also turned out to be the most openly corrupt man in history ever to occupy the White House.

But Tom blows by these inconvenient facts by by invoking one of every smarmy Both Siderist’s favorite magic words: “tribes”.

It’s always the thing I’d go back to when we had to deal with the “baker cases” and private businesses not wanting to do work for same sex couples…

So, same sex marriage violates your deeply held religious believes? And you’re Catholic? So, do you check before taking an order to see if a straight couple is interfaith? And if so, if they will be raising their children as Catholic? Do you check and see if either party is divorced? Do you ask if the wedding will be held in a church and performed by a priest?

Or intentionally ignored by one side in this (religious people). Non-religious people are acutely aware of the distinction, particularly when churches start trying to do things like prohibit child adoptions to atheists, Jews, LGBT, &c because it violates their freedom of religion or something. When Christians tell you “you’re not really married” (that’s happened to my wife and me, and I’m sure that’s happened to a lot of LGBT people). When they use their power to ban people from hospitals they run because they don’t “agree with their lifestyle.”

We need things like the Lincoln Project to help out in that area. Plus it looks way less like “partisan hackery” if Trump is also being relentlessly attacked by current and recently former members of his own party than a bunch of “Pissed off Liberals”.

We can worry about them pulling a lifeboats/rebranding maneuver on the Republican Party after Biden is sworn in. I don’t think these tome sized screeds, or him spending 45 minutes out of an hour podcast to rant about the Lincoln Project is helpful *right now* in any way, shape, or form.

My first marriage was in a Cook County judge’s office, not a church. (RIP first husband)

Second marriage took place in my tobacco barn, officiated by a much loved local gay man and certificate signed by a funeral director whose surname is Angel. All in all, the local church folk were merely bemused, and our “civil union” is every bit as legit as a marriage “consecrated’ in a church by a preacher.

I just can not be outraged the least bit, got bigger things to be outraged about.

If you’ve never listened to the audio (it’s on YouTube somewhere) of Giuliani completely losing his shit over ferrets, some night when you’re bored, look it up. It’s a scream.

He should have just stopped there. Based on what I and most people have seen that’s a completely reasonable explanation.

But no then he had to rant. On and on and on…

And once again, the issue of Rudy’s actual treasonous acts falls by the wayside as the question about what he’s doing in his pants becomes the story of the day/week. Yes, he’s gross, but his true acts of horror go way beyond whatever he did in a Borat skit. So now, if, like this tweet from Ben Dreyfuss backs up his “tucking in my shirt” story, it will all be hailed by the usual suspects as “they were just out to get Rudy.”

Fuck. It. All.

Funny, though: maybe it’s because the NYC Metro media market is so politically predictable (none of NY, NJ or CT are really “swing states”) , and there are no Senatorial races this year [Ooops, sorry: Cory Booker is running] - so most of the ads have been on the Congressional/State Lege level: i.e., people we’ve never heard of lobbing badly-illustrated insults at other people we’ve never heard of (and NOBODY pushing their partisan affiliation - D or R).

Illinois numbers do not look good. New cases are back to where they were in the height of the first wave and deaths are creeping up — thought still only 1/3 of where they were back then. Might reflect that more of the cases are among younger people so, on the average, less lethal but we will have to wait and see how this progresses. Number of new Illinois deaths as percentage of population is higher than among any of the European nations, except Czechia.
