Colbert - Cruelty Was the Plan: Chilling News About the Human Toll of Trump’s Child Separation Policy

After discussing the supremely unsettling footage of Rudy Giuliani in the new “Borat” movie, Stephen Colbert takes a moment to encourage Americans who might be considering keeping Donald Trump in office for four more years to remember the awful cruelties his administration has inflicted on families at the Southern border. #Colbert #Monologue #BetterKnowABallot

You know what?

I’m weary as hell of this Pandemic too and I’m starting to find it annoying wearing a mask everywhere and I’ve got an ever growing list of “shit I can’t wait to do when this is over”.

But there’s no vaccine yet.

And as badly as I want this to be over I have to accept that it just can’t be yet.

So I’ll keep masking up.
And I’ll keep social distancing.
And I’ll keep sanitizing like a motherfucker.

Because I care about my own health and that of the people I love more than anything.

Yes this pandemic sucks balls but pretending like its over is not going to accomplish a damn thing aside from keeping ICUs and morgues packed to the gills.

Marathons take time, people. Hang in there.

It started off as a remnant low, drifted south, took on tropical storm characteristics, now peaking.

A “fish storm” though, no land targets.

Update:
Betsy Devos cannot escape by sea after all. She sold her 50m super-yacht Seaquest earlier this year. It has been renamed Chasing Daylight. Princess Amway was asking 21.9 million for it, but there is no public record of how much she got. Good thing, too, since it did indeed have the range to abscond to Russia (5250 nautical miles).

Incidentally, I am a fan of ships and nautical stuff but I absolutely loathe most of these “super-yacht” designs. Compared to the graceful and dignified yachts of the past, they look like overblown floating whorehouses, a successful coke-smuggler’s idea of a good-looking ship. This could well be indicative of how decadent the wealthy have become in recent years.

At this point, I am going to be putting all effort (and still more money) into GOTV here in Texas.
I am reasonably confident that Biden will win convincingly enough to keep the GOP from making a serious effort to overturn the result (though they will whine, accuse, and conspirafy till hell won’t have it).
He can do this without Texas, but turning Texas blue is a dream of mine, and would be a shattering, perhaps fatal, blow to Republican morale and even to their fundamental world-view. They might finally begin to understand that they are out of touch with most of the human race.

I have almost donated all of my 1200 Stimulus check. What suggestions do you have for texas to send a few bucks to? Anyone else has suggestions. I think Biden has enough, but what senate races should I consider. Thanks in advance.

Speaking of Superyacht Investor, they recently ran this whinging screed.

Closing borders to non-native crews ‘draconian’, says captain

The shutting of Australian and New Zealand borders to all non-native yachts and crews is “draconian and unhelpful to say the least”, according to captain Iain Flockhart.

He was reacting to the news that crews of hundreds of ocean-going yachts fear being stranded in the Pacific islands during cyclone season with usual safe havens in New Zealand and Australia closed because of Covid-19 travel restrictions.

Flockhart told Superyacht Investor: “On the premise of the old saying ‘Any port in a storm” and given the vastness off the Pacific, with options somewhat limited, and the fact that safe havens are a considerable distance from the current danger areas, getting out of a high risk should take precedence and as long as all reasonable precautions are taken relating to Covid-19 and proper quarantine procedures are set up, this would be the favourable course of action.”

Too bad for you.

Consultation, according to Flockhart, should take place with underwriters for any vessel that has no option but to remain in a high risk area. “Underwriters have specific clauses about not being in high risk areas at certain times of the year. Any vessels in these areas should therefore contact their underwriters or insurance brokers to clarify their own situations and discuss what options are available, and to see if the underwriters are prepared to make any exceptions in the current circumstances.”

The situation is unprecedented. Flockhart cannot recall a time when the movement of yachts has been so severely impacted during the annual tourist season in the southern hemisphere.

“I think, in general, it is a silly thing to be doing,” continued Flockhart, “Yes, we are in the midst of a global pandemic but there are simple, tried and tested ways of managing such a situation. You simply set up a week controlled quarantine system.”

(More whinging about economics and shortsightedness of Australian and New Zealand politicians.)

Won’t someone think of the poor insurance companies and billionaires?

One week quarantine, he wants.

Go to some other port. As for “tried-and-true,” superyachts didn’t exist during the Spanish Flu pandemic. Try again.

Disney Heiress Calls For Wealth Tax: ‘We Have To Draw A Line’ (All Things Considered, June 28, 2019).

She talks about interviewing employees at Disneyland who were rationing their insulin, &c.

She also notes no Disney family members are actually on the board of Disney any more.

The corporation, stung by Abigail Disney calling them out as a soulless empire which pays its workers starvation wages, responded with predictable apologetics which did not actually address her statements.

“Disney is at the forefront of providing workforce education, which is widely recognized as the best way to create economic opportunity for employees and empower upward mobility. Our Disney Aspire initiative is the most comprehensive employee education program in the country, covering 100% of all tuition costs, books and fees so our hourly workers can pursue higher education free of charge, and graduate free of debt. Under Bob Iger’s leadership, Disney has made an initial commitment of $150 million to fund this program in the first five years, and will continue to make significant investments to make Disney Aspire available to as many employees as possible. Disney also provides flexible schedules and subsidized childcare to make it easier for employees to take advantage of this opportunity. American workers need meaningful change; they deserve smart policies and practical programs, like Disney Aspire, that empower them to achieve their goals and ensure they are part of the most competitive workforce in the world.”

Hundreds of Nebraskans were potentially falsely told they could not vote (Omaha World-Herald), the lede:

Hundreds of eligible voters may have been mistakenly told that they can’t participate in the 2020 election because of problems with the handling of a Nebraska law requiring a two-year waiting period to restore felons’ voting rights.

At least 51 Nebraskans eligible and registered to vote received county letters saying they were ineligible to vote, Nebraska Secretary of State Bob Evnen told the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska.

But the number of potential voters who received erroneous letters is most likely higher, ACLU of Nebraska Executive Director Danielle Conrad said, based on the ACLU’s reviews of the felons sent letters.

“It’s a perfect storm of confusion and errors in the system,” Conrad said of problems with calculating the two-year waiting period required for felons after they complete their sentences. “Unfortunately, we don’t know the impact that that perfect storm may have.”

Yay, my county. The organisers insisted that Covid-19 would not be a problem for their event. The event did comply with event size restrictions imposed by Panhandle Public Health District (because those restrictions are useless).

The Heirloom Market, held in Bayard on Saturday, Oct.10, has been listed as a community exposure site by Panhandle Public Health District.

Anyone who attended the market should monitor for COVID symptoms through Oct. 24 and if they begin experiencing any symptoms, immediately get tested and quarantine at home.

Due to recent disease investigations indicating confirmed COVID positive cases were contagious during their time at the market and unable to identify each person they were near, health officials are notifying the public of the potential for exposure. The Heirloom Market organizers have worked closely with health officials to notify their vendors of potential exposure; however, due to additional cases being present at the market during their contagious time, it has been increased to a community exposure site.

Meanwhile just to my north:

Allegations of resistance by the Alliance school district to participate in COVID-19 health investigations has gained the attention of state officials.

Vote for conservatives, get genocides.

Even the minimal restrictions put on by Pete Ricketts (report what’s going on in Alliance Public Schools) is too much for them. They aren’t gonna have no gubmint interference in their schools, even if they have to expose every student.

starherald.com

In response to a question from Nebraska Department of Education Commissioner Matthew Blomstedt, he acknowledged that the Panhandle Public Health District and state officials have encountered access problems in health investigations and enforcing requirements in the Alliance Public Schools. Blomstedt said he had met with a group of school board members from across the state on Thursday, asking for “a level of compliance.” He plans to meet with Alliance school board members.

“… Or we are going to have to step in and do a little bit more and put some other requirements onto the school,” Blomstedt said.

Parliaments are no guarantee of conservative rodent copulation, as seen in Canada. The Conservatives brought their third no confidence motion against Justin Trudeau’s government.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his minority Liberal government have avoided a potential snap election.

The Liberals survived a confidence vote in the House of Commons 180 to 146, with the support of the opposition NDP.

The vote on Wednesday was over a Conservative motion demanding a special committee on coronavirus aid spending.

It comes a year to the day that Mr Trudeau retained power in a narrow election win.

The political drama concerned an opposition motion seeking to create a special parliamentary committee to probe the Liberal government’s pandemic relief spending.

IIRC, at that time Jobs was in his shiny glass stage - the iMac had dropped the anti-glare coating and gone with very high reflectance glass.

The yacht incorporated this flat-glassy look.

So gone were the traditional wooden ship with curves (from bending wood slowly while wet, to shape it), that even metal ships often imitate.

Instead what was left for the Venus was to be an engineering ideal that no artist would sculpt except in irony of the cold heartless nature of the industrial age.

The early recordings were direct to wax, a needle coupled to diaphragm on one end and the pointy side on a wax cylinder.

Playback was the reverse, and this is where both Edison and Bell and their teams worked to make something useful. But of course the physical transducers were weak, thus requiring a horn to get the most out of the sound.

IIRC it wasn’t until the 1920’s that an electronic pick-up mic was invented to make musical recordings.

Things aren’t looking good for Nebraska on the coronavirus front, as Douglas County (seat Omaha) will spill over into the rest of the state shortly.

On Tuesday, some 86% of regular beds in the metropolitan area’s hospitals were occupied, as were 81% of intensive care beds. That’s not that unusual, she said. Hospitals prefer to be full.

But among those patients were 179 with COVID-19, 59 of whom were in intensive care. Twenty-nine more were awaiting test results. That surpasses the spring peak of 170 COVID-19 patients in metro area hospitals on May 27, according to the county’s data dashboard. And the current count is up nearly 30% from the week before.

“I think the message is, every fifth ICU bed is occupied by a (COVID-19) patient, and every 10th general hospital bed is occupied by a (COVID-19) patient,” Pour said.

Douglas County’s increase in COVID-19 hospitalizations mirrors that of the state, which had a new peak of 380 patients hospitalized with the virus on Tuesday.

New health measures announced last week by Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts require hospitals to have 10% of hospital and ICU beds available for coronavirus patients in order to continue elective procedures.

Another concern, Pour said, is that state health officials are seeing that it is taking less time for infected people to become ill enough to require hospitalization. The lag used to be four to five weeks; now it’s closer to two weeks.

It’s a beautiful design, in itself. However it should be seen and sited as a derivation on one of Wright’s prairie houses. Would look good in Kansas, near the geographic center of the country.

They don’t want to stop at repealing Roe vs Wade: they want this:

Poland abortion: Top court to rule on almost total ban

Poland’s constitutional court is due to rule on plans to introduce an almost total ban on abortion.

Poland’s laws are already among the strictest in Europe, with abortion only allowed in cases of rape or incest, if the mother’s life is at risk, or if the foetus is seriously compromised.

But the new legislation would ban terminations in cases of foetal defects.

Babylon 5 looks a little like Star Trek. It showed up at about the same moment as Deep Space 9, and the narrative center of each (space stations fated to play pivotal roles in a (series of) wars) is similar, but B5 is special.

You could argue that B5 was the first major modern non-network television series that was a serious authorial effort, with themes and storylines that carried through all five seasons. These days with the heyday of serial drama that doesn’t seem special, but in the early 90s when everything was more or less straight episodic it really stood out.

You can argue the merits of the characters, the male leads get a little Christlike at times and some of the character arcs are… less than I’d have hoped for. The last season doesn’t do much for me. But seasons 2-3-4 are the best damn television of that era.

Dr. Lukashev here better be careful about open windows. Just sayin’…-

A number of Russian regions risk facing a second wave of the coronavirus pandemic that is 10 times worse than the first, a senior Russian vector-borne disease expert said Tuesday.

“The situation in the regions is very different,” Alexander Lukashev, who heads the Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University’s (MSMU) Martsinovsky Institute of Medical Parasitology, Tropical and Vector-Borne Diseases, told state television.

Moscow, for example, is the epicenter of Russia’s Covid-19 outbreak with over 377,000 confirmed cases, followed by the Moscow region with almost 82,000. On the opposite end, Russia’s two least-populated regions, the Nenets and Chukotka autonomous districts, have a combined total caseload of 622.

“In some regions, the second wave may well be 10 times larger than the first,” Lukashev told the Rossia broadcaster.

New surge in cases in a couple weeks.

LINCOLN — Sports bar owners and managers aren’t sure what to expect for the opening of the Husker football season, which begins Saturday morning at Ohio State and continues with the home opener on Halloween.

On one hand, they hope for somewhat close to a normal game-day experience to make up for the difficult months of the pandemic. On the other, those hopes have been dimmed by the surging virus and a renewed need to practice social distancing and limit how many people walk in their doors.

The mantra of Lincoln and Omaha bar owners: Keep your fingers crossed and be ready for anything.

“The profit comes during football,” said Eric F. Marsh, owner of Longwell’s bar in Lincoln’s Haymarket. “And that’s also where you build up your fat reserves to get through the lean times of the year. I just hope that this year that that is possible for us.”

The Mitt Romney Bain Capital model.

The Germans call it Heuschreckenkapitalismus (locust capitalism)

Vulture capitalism. That’s what the GOP is using the pandemic to do. They’re picking over carcasses of businesses wrecked by the pandemic.

Reality of the stock markets is that the Dow 30 and S&P 500 aren’t telling the true tale of the economy because a handful of stocks are doing exceptionally well, and market cap drives the indicies based on how they’re computed.

But when you look at wider market, you see lower percentage of businesses in the black this year. Everything else is hemorrhaging because of the pandemic. Highest number of businesses bleeding red ink in years.

And this will be sustained because the economy wont recover until the pandemic is contained.

86
lawhawk  Oct 22, 2020 • 6:00:14am

Meanwhile in the maladministration’s obstruction of Congress (goes to Stars & Stripes) and showing how much conservatives love veterans:

VA officials refuse to participate in Senate hearing on landmark veterans health care law

WASHINGTON — Officials for the Department of Veterans Affairs declined to participate Wednesday in a Senate hearing about the progress in implementing the Mission Act, a law passed two years ago to help improve health care for veterans.

“I scheduled this hearing because of my dissatisfaction with the pace of Mission implementation,” Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., chairman of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, said at the hearing. “While VA officials were invited to participate in today’s hearing…the department chose to decline.”

Under the VA Mission Act of 2018, standards were dramatically loosened to allow veterans to seek mental health services, urgent care and primary care outside the federal system. The landmark effort was spurred by controversies surrounding excessive wait times for care at VA facilities and long distances some veterans had to travel to federal hospitals, especially patients from rural areas.

However, the shift to more care outside the government umbrella has raised concerns from some Democrats and progressive activists about creeping privatization in the VA and how that could take precedence over investing in federal facilities and employees. Congress provided about $15 billion for community care in the VA’s latest budget. Richard Stone, executive in charge of the Veterans Health Administration, told Congress in February that outside care costs about $1 billion each month, which sets spending within funding levels. However, the full impact of the coronavirus pandemic on community care remains unclear.

In interviews with the New York Times, European officials said that they fear the shift of the Republican Party away from traditional American foreign policy may be permanent, which would mean that relations with the United States would depend entirely on which party controls the White House.

This election is in part about trying to claw our way back to Flawed Democracy status. With Biden we will still be under the control of corporate and billionaire interests, we will still be living under a Republican packed SCOTUS arrived at by pure self-interest chicanery. But at least we can attempt to strengthen the ability to vote, limit gang policing, and make sure this sort of authoritarian gangsterism cannot happen again in order to turn this big ship around.

It’s a vivid reminder that businesses moved to shut down and take precautions against covid19 before states or Trump did.

Many businesses stopped nonessential travel, urged work from home where possible, and implemented their own policies before states did (or still have done as a bunch of GOP dominated states still don’t have masking mandates in place).

That’s not to say all businesses were responsible. There’s a bunch that weren’t, including a bunch of food production facilities all across the same states that don’t have mandatory masking.

Trump spokesperson says armed men outside Florida early voting location not hired by campaign

A Trump campaign spokesperson says two men dressed as armed security guards who set up in a tent outside an early voting location in downtown St. Petersburg, Florida, were not hired by the campaign.

Thea McDonald, Deputy National Press Secretary for the Trump campaign, told WFLA: “The Campaign did not hire these individuals nor did the Campaign direct them to go to the voting location.”

Julie Marcus, Pinellas County Supervisor of Elections, said the men set up a tent outside an early voting site on Wednesday and claimed to be with the Trump campaign. Deputies with Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office came to the polling place and spoke to the guards, who said they were hired by the Trump campaign and would be out Thursday at the early voting location.

Too close to Iowa?

The 17th congressional district of Illinois is represented by Democrat Cheri Bustos. It includes most of the northwestern portion of the state, with most of its population living on the Illinois side of the Quad Cities, as well as parts of Peoria and Rockford.

The 17th congressional district has shifted northward after the 2012 redistricting. It lost Quincy and Decatur, as well as its share of Springfield. It was generally thought that the redrawn map would allow the district to revert to the Democrats, who held it without interruption from 1983 to 2011. As expected, one-term Republican incumbent Bobby Schilling was defeated by Democratic opponent Cheri Bustos in the 2012 election cycle

Stable genius!

The Case Against Donald Trump

…But let us lay all of this aside for the moment. Let us even lay aside the extraordinary fact that Donald Trump has been credibly accused of rape. Compelling evidence suggests that his countless sins and defects are rooted in mental instability, pathological narcissism, and profound moral and cognitive impairment. Which returns us to the subject of Major Hering.

Trump’s opponent, Joe Biden, is in many ways a typically imperfect candidate, but if we judge these men on two questions alone—Who is a more trustworthy steward of America’s nuclear arsenal? Which man poses less of a threat to our collective existence?—the answer is spectacularly obvious.

The Atlantic has endorsed only three candidates in its 163-year history: Abraham Lincoln, Lyndon B. Johnson, and Hillary Clinton. The latter two endorsements had more to do with the qualities of Barry Goldwater and Donald Trump than with those of Johnson and Clinton. The same holds true in the case of Joe Biden. Biden is a man of experience, maturity, and obvious humanity, but had the Republican Party put forward a credible candidate for president, we would have felt no compulsion to state a preference. Donald Trump, however, is a clear and continuing danger to the United States, and it does not seem likely that our country would be able to emerge whole from four more years of his misrule. Two men are running for president. One is a terrible man; the other is a decent man. Vote for the decent man.

Here’s a good piece by Republican Stuart Stevens: Victory is Near

I don’t agree with all of what he’s saying, but this part rings like a bell.

The most vulnerable moment for any challenger facing an incumbent president is the period immediately after securing the nomination, when you are broke and trying to build a national organization out of a series of state races you were fighting just a few weeks earlier. In all of modern politics, the Biden campaign is the only campaign that actually jumped out to a lead against an incumbent during this tenuous time.

Even given all of this success in a race where Biden has held a steady and sizable lead, I sense a strange lack of confidence with Democrats, as if they have been juggling eggs for most of a marathon and can’t believe they actually might cross the finish in first place.

In these last two weeks, I would plead with Democrats to change that mindset and banish the timidity. If I ran the Democratic party, here’s what I’d be telling my troops:

We are going to crush Donald Trump and the sickness he represents. There are more of us than there are of them. We are right. They are wrong. This is our moment. This is our destiny. Walk with confidence. Do not falter. Victory will be ours.

[…]

So to my Democratic friends: Let us go forward in this final stretch with the confidence that our mission is vital and our opponent is weak.

Do not hesitate to swagger. These last two weeks belong to you. Years from now you will look back on these last days as some of the best in your lives. An evil was unleashed in the country you love and you rose to smite it. You will slay this dragon.

Trump is collapsing and his allies of convenience are panicked.

Now is when you turn a victory into a rout. We are all tired, but the other side isn’t just tired. They are frightened and confused. As they should be. Because they are losing the fight for the soul of this country. And they know it.

Victory is near.

It’s part and parcel of the be happy that polling shows Biden is ahead significantly, but fight as though Trump’s up 2. Take nothing for granted.

We’ve seen how national polls don’t reflect that happens in individual states. We don’t have a national election. We have 51 separate state/DC elections. Each state ultimately produces EC delegates for a candidate. First to 270 wins. Right now, it appears that Biden has more paths to 270 than Trump.

It should be a blowout, but Trumpists are impervious to facts or logic.

So WarnerArchive puts on their Youtube channel the opening of the pilot Babylon 5:

I notice it is a different cut than what we prior got in the US on digital distribution outlets.

Also, it seems the deinterlacing is better. Even on Amazon Prime the pilot and early episodes show off interlacing effects, which become prominent as the graphics back then didn’t dither edges as well as today.

There are two versions of the pilot, one early with music by Copeland, another with music by the composer used for the rest of the series, Christopher Franke.

Trump spokesperson says armed men outside Florida early voting location not hired by campaign

In Texas, this kind of shit is illegal AF. To work as a uniformed security guard, you have to have an individual license, you have to be on the payroll of a licensed security provider and, if you’re armed, a state commission. These licenses are issued by the Department of Public Safety (state police). You also have to have a valid contract between your employer and any venue where you appear to be performing security duties.

Lubbock business to host St. Louis couple that pointed guns at protesters

LUBBOCK, Texas — On Wednesday, the Lubbock restaurant Cook’s Garage announced a meet-and-greet with Mark and Patricia McCloskey, a St. Louis couple that went viral after pointing guns at protesters in June.

The McCloskey’s were indicted for felony unlawful use of a weapon October 6 for a June 28 incident where the two pointed guns at protesters while they marched on their private street, according to The Associated Press.

Since the incident, the couple was featured at the Republican National Convention and Missouri Governor Mike Parson said he will pardon the two if they are convicted.

The meet-and-greet was announced on Facebook and is slated to take place on Friday, October 23 at 12:00 p.m. The business also said that Congressman Jodey Arrington would introduce the couple at the event.

The fires around Rocky Mountain National Park, as far as smoke goes, are not as much of a concern for Teleskiguy as they are for me.

With the winds from the south, that puts the smoke over the Nebraska Panhandle.

The Mullen Fire, which started west of Laramie County in Wyoming and burned south into Colorado is still going, and about 3/4 contained. It’s burned 176,863 acres.

Winds from the west put that smoke over Cheyenne and the Nebraska Panhandle. Cheyenne has suffered some days as bad as Los Angeles in air quality.

According to Jasmine, who is a freshman at Miami Senior High School, what made matters worse is that she got no support from her teacher.

“Kept on seeing something pop up on the Zoom, so I look, and then, it’s like N-word — hard R — in all caps,” she said. “Then, I click on the chat, I open it and then, it’s like spammed all through, and then, it’s like ‘Unmute me ugly B-word.’”

This was inevitable. All the forests in Grand County were beetle-killed in the aughts, just endless stands of dark red tinder-dry forest that’s been waiting to burn. Yesterday all the elements for a horrible fire lined up. I’m pretty sure the state of Colorado has never seen 100,000 acres get torched in a day, I know I sure haven’t.

I’ve been looking for the packet in mail but it came in email a month ago. I emailed my SoS who told me when it went out and found it. So…

Printed, completed and sent.

But because it’s so late I had to send it FedEx because our UPS store has closed. FedEx isn’t guaranteeing 2nd day or ground delivery so $53 to send it overnight with a signature.

Instructions were clear but different than what the state officials (not my county) told me when I called them. Voting ex-pat differs from voting absentee.

Weeeeee.

Now I’m waiting for the signature confirming receipt and them I’ll follow the ballot online to ensure it’s counted.

My wife just pointed me to what was then the largest fire in Colorado history, from when she lived in Colorado Springs.

The Hayman Fire was a forest fire started on June 8, 2002, 35 miles (56 km) northwest of Colorado Springs, Colorado and 22 miles (35 km) southwest of Denver, Colorado and was, for 18 years, the largest wildfire in the state’s recorded history at over 138,114 acres. During the 2020 wildfire season, the Pine Gulch Fire became the largest wildfire in state history. However, just 7 weeks later, the Cameron Peak Fire became the largest wildifire in Colorado history.

Hundreds of firefighters fought the fast-moving fire, which caused nearly $40 million in firefighting costs, burned 133 homes, 138,114 acres, and forced the evacuation of 5,340 people.

Smoke could be seen and smelled across the state from Vail, 55 miles (89 km) northwest, to Burlington, 188 miles (303 km) east, and from Broomfield, 50 miles (80 km) north, to Walsenburg, 130 miles (210 km) south.

The Hayman Fire burned from June 8, 2002, until it was classified as contained on July 18, 2002.[3] The cause of the wildfire was found to be arson.

a rather significant point from yesterday’s electoral-vote.com regarding scotus’s handling of all these election cases so close to an election

…by virtue of a 4-4 split, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to overturn the ruling of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court that said that late mail-in ballots would be allowed for three days after the election, even without postmarks. In the moment, everyone’s focus was on the obvious move by Chief Justice John Roberts (who joined with the three liberals) to shore up his “just calling balls and strikes” reputation, and on the fact that this result will help the Democrats in a key(stone) state.

With 24 hours to reflect, however, some folks have noticed an extremely troubling undercurrent to this whole affair. CNN’s Joshua Douglas and Slate’s Mark Joseph Stern, among others, point out that the vote should have been 8-0, and not 4-4, since the Constitution is clear that elections are the province of the states, to manage (largely) as they see fit. The four non-Roberts conservatives have, in effect, announced that they are more than happy to ignore that principle, and to muck around in states’ handling of elections, even when it’s less than two weeks to Election Day. Once Justices Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, Thomas, and Alito get a fifth colleague who feels that way, they could wreak all sorts of havoc

I gave my stimulus check away to the local food bank and to people I knew could use it. I don’t consider myself special or holier than thou. My thought was that I was employed for the foreseeable future, I didn’t need this extra money and other people could use it better than me spending it on shoes or something. I did ask my brother if he and Mom didn’t need it first, since they weren’t going to get money right away. He said no and gave me his blessing to give it away.

Local food bank and a fund for small businesses set up by the city. My pension checks continue to arrive.

It should be largely as they see fit as long as everyone who wants to vote gets to and there are safety measures to make sure that the vote gets counted properly. The problem is that Roberts doesn’t actually care about either of those. He just thinks it should be left to the states. Which is why a new VRA will not make it through his court.

I think Trumpism is going to be impacting the party for at least three cycles. Remember, they were supposed to rebrand after Romney lost and they ended up with something far more ugly than what Romney ran and Romney ran the most xenophobic campaign a Republican presidential nominee had to that point. I didn’t vote for McCain and I had no love for W Bush either but they weren’t xenophobic assholes. In fact, if you ask me, the GOP’s beginnings going to the point where we are now is how they responded to Bush supporting immigration reform because Bush understandably thought he could make Hispanics a part of the GOP coalition.

They chunked their “autopsy” after Romney’s loss.

They ignored Louisiana Governor Jindal saying they needed to stop being the stupid party.

After Michael Steele delivered for them a major electoral victory in 2010 to seize the Senate and finished his term at the RNC, several Republicans were outed as making racist comments about him saying why did they ever hire a ni*CLANG for their party?

Why should they change now?

Situation is very grim in Grand County, CO. The East Troublesome fire advanced more than 20 miles yesterday, scorched over 100,000 acres in less than 24 hours. Fire lines are less than two miles from the town of Grand Lake and the fire is now burning in Rocky Mountain National Park. Today’s weather forecast is more dry and windy conditions.

My friend’s family has a cabin overlooking Lake Grandby. We were there about 3 weeks ago. They are very concerned about losing the cabin. In the category of “How’s this for timing?”, because of the smoke from the Cameron Peak Fire, I asked my friend whether the fire insurance premium for the cabin was higher than for their houses in the Denver area. He said he didn’t know, and that there had never been a real threat before.

I think you’re missing my point. Trump encourages domestic political terrorism in a way that Reagan and the Bushes did not. It doesn’t make their presidencies less bad but Trump’s actions are what sets him apart.

Reagan explicitly called himself a Sagebrush Rebel in campaign stops. He launched his campaign on the site of a lynching of civil rights workers in Mississippi.

Trump may not be as adept at dog whistles, but Reagan was every bit as bad with both violence and racism (young bucks collecting welfare, welfare queens having babies to get more welfare, &c).

Yeah….he’s got either some kind of neurological damage or motor dysfunction.

At the event where those photos were taken - where he came out and said no stimulus deal - he looked like he could barely walk. He kind of baby-stepped his way to the podium.

Gonna to just agree to disagree. I just think the amount of political violence directly inspired by this president is unprecedented. I remember the Bush years. I never worried about unhinged Bush supporters going after John Kerry and other critics of Bush nor did I think Bush wanted violence against them. It’s a low bar but it’s the difference between a F and a 0 which is imo the important albeit subtle difference between Trump and his worst predecessors.

So I’m watching Stephanie Ruhle this morning and there was a segment on undecided voters. They were in Atlanta interviewing three black women in their 30s. They were mad that Joe hasn’t apologized for the crime bill that was signed into law when they were in elementary school (he already apologized and said it was a mistake), that he hasn’t talked about income inequities in the black community (its on his damned website and he’s spoken about it recently a few times), and that Kamala did some terrible things when she was AG, locking people up for pot ,and she hasn’t apologized(google Kamala Harris AG Decisions and you get all wingnut websites in the first 10 links). They all said they would vote down ticket and leave the Presidential race blank if they didn’t see something addressing their CONCERNS before election day. I see this all the time online, “Joe hasn’t told us his plan for-insert concern here- and I can’t vote for someone who has no plan”. WHEN ITS ON THE DAMNED WEBSITE IN CLEAR LANGUAGE.

I’m not black. I have only been discriminated against for being a woman and while homeless in my teens (it was assumed I was a sex worker or an addict or deserved to be thrown out of my family). I have no idea what it feels like to have my community wrecked by racism and shitty policy decisions. But god damnit. If you are really that fucking short sighted, just stay the fuck home. Americans are fucking lazy as fuck. Most people honestly think that voting is the end of their civic duty and that one person in office can accomplish everything by themselves. Hence the “Joe was in office for 40 plus years, what did he get done?” Yes, all by themselves, a senator can just whip up any law they want and POOF! it’s magically over and done. I just am so done with this short sighted horseshit. We aren’t engaged as a nation politically, which is how we got Trump and allowed him to take the divides already there and blow them the fuck up into hatred and violence.

I swear, if I do manage to find a way to get onto the county school board, I am lobbying the fuck out of getting civics back into the school curriculum. This just annoys the living shit out of me if you haven’t guessed.

The 90s were a weird time, politically - especially the first half of the decade. And the crime bill was absolutely a product of it’s time. I don’t think some like it could pass today, but our society has changed quite a bit (for the better, I think) since then.

A lot of people voted 3rd party in 2016. While, yes, many who voted for Stein probably would have voted for Clinton if Stein wasn’t on the ballot - I suspect some would simply not have voted.

The same can be said for those who voted for Johnson and/or McMullin. A lot of them might have otherwise gone for Trump, and there were plenty of states where Clinton won by less than the share of the Johnson/McMullin vote. Plus those states that we suppose Clinton would have won without Stein had relatively high Johnson/McMullin voters.

Biden has one big asset, namely that people tend to like him. Hillary did not have that. In fact, I will admit that I did not and do not like her, but I certainly found her the best candidate in 2016.

But the fact that Biden is so affable and human means that the crap they are hurling at him does not stick as it did to Hillary.

That is really messing up the GOP strategy.

when i hear these kind of vagueries that are passed off as intelligent thought, i want followup questions to find out if these people are just regurgitating basic talking points they ‘heard’ or if they have actual detailed knowledge of the issues they are ‘concerned’ about:

- can you explain in detail and with specific examples, what your problems with the crime bill are…

- when you say “income inequities in the black community” give some examples of what specifically a presidential candidate should be saying 10 days before election day

- can you explain in detail and with specific examples or case names of what “terrible things” Harris did when she was AG.

and finally, we all know that in a two person race, if you don’t vote FOR biden that’s at least a 1/2 vote for trump. So why do you think trump is a better bet to address your concerns than Biden?

I hadn’t really heard of Molly Jong-Fast until the podcast. I really like her, might have to pick up a couple of her books after the election when I can enjoy things like fiction again.

She is the daughter of Erica Jong (“Fear of Flying”). She has been a writer for a long time on subjects regarding sex, politics (sometimes those are the same thing), feminist and liberal issues.

No mention of Bernie, but that crossed my mind as they were being interviewed. There aren’t too many third party choices this time around, Jo Jorgenson was on the ballot, but there has not been an ad or TV appearance here so no one knows who the hell she is. I think one of the GA house seats had a libertarian candidate, but I ignored everyone but democrats this time. The Libertarians only pop up in presidential years to syphon off votes which makes me wonder who funds them. And where that money goes beyond a few yard signs.

We have DSA members going all out for Howie Hawkins because they just can’t bring themselves to vote for “Corporate Ho-Jo”“. These are the same folks who went full sexist on me because I supported and voted for Warren in the primary.

Democratic Socialists in disarray.

There is a definite different vibe in the Lincoln and Omaha DSA; they are disappointed in not getting what they wanted, but they are all in on Biden, working get-out-the-vote drives, &c.

They are more pragmatic about this: To move the Overton Window left, you have to start by moving it left. Letting it slide further right because you didn’t get as much left as you want just makes it harder.

The initial funding for the Libertarian Party came from the Kochs, Bass and Hunt families in the 70s. Now the funding comes from the Peter Thiel types.

when i hear these kind of vagueries that are passed off as intelligent thought, i want followup questions to find out if these people are just regurgitating basic talking points they ‘heard’ or if they have actual detailed knowledge of the issues they are ‘concerned’ about:

- can you explain in detail and with specific examples, what your problems with the crime bill are…

- when you say “income inequities in the black community” give some examples of what specifically a presidential candidate should be saying 10 days before election day

- can you explain in detail and with specific examples or case names of what “terrible things” Harris did when she was AG.

and finally, we all know that in a two person race, if you don’t vote FOR biden that’s at least a 1/2 vote for trump. So why do you think trump is a better bet to address your concerns than Biden?

I’m a minimalist. “Not voting is voting for the status quo. Buh-bye, magat.”

Here the Libertarian candidate for US Senate may syphon off some votes from Ben Sasse (but not enough to make a difference). Jorgeson is on the ballot here as well. There is also a Libertarian running for the natural resources district board here, which is a frightening thought but probably won’t win.

The only Libertarian worth supporting this election cycle is the guy running for Senate in Arkansas. And that is only for 2 reasons:

1. He is running against Tom fucking Cotton, and;
2. There is no Democrat on the ballot

It’s more than that. The relevant section of the executive order (which I’m betting is actually unenforceable):

Pursuant to my authority under section 3302(1) of title 5, United States Code, I find that conditions of good administration make necessary an exception to the competitive hiring rules and examinations for career positions in the Federal service of a confidential, policy-determining, policy-making, or policy-advocating character. These conditions include the need to provide agency heads with additional flexibility to assess prospective appointees without the limitations imposed by competitive service selection procedures. Placing these positions in the excepted service will mitigate undue limitations on their selection. This action will also give agencies greater ability and discretion to assess critical qualities in applicants to fill these positions, such as work ethic, judgment, and ability to meet the particular needs of the agency. These are all qualities individuals should have before wielding the authority inherent in their prospective positions, and agencies should be able to assess candidates without proceeding through complicated and elaborate competitive service processes or rating procedures that do not necessarily reflect their particular needs.

It would also allow the President to discriminate, for example against minorities or LGBT.

I hope Joe Biden is keeping track of all these orders to rescind.

I notice it is a different cut than what we prior got in the US on digital distribution outlets.

Also, it seems the deinterlacing is better. Even on Amazon Prime the pilot and early episodes show off interlacing effects, which become prominent as the graphics back then didn’t dither edges as well as today.

Far preferred DS9 to BS5. Better written, better production and moments like “root beer” or when Sisko deletes his log because he’s ashamed of lying the Romulans onto the federations side in the Dominion war.

BS5 had a lot of quips and one liners. But in the end, I remember very little of the show. OTOH, I watched DS9 only intermittently (due to life) but remember much more of it.

DS9 did have far better production values, on all levels. B5 space scenes looked to be generated in a (good-for-the-era) graphics workstation, with lots primitive shapes and (to the modern eye) really cringe-y textures. Costumes were mostly better, aliens were better on DS9.

But the writing… no. Don’t get me wrong - DS9 is by far the best written Star Trek ever, and the individual episode writing in the last few seasons was truly amazing. But so much of it is just generic NG-era Trek. The non-Federation characters are the ones who stand out, and even their arcs are mostly abbreviated.

If you hate the main storylines of B5, that’s fair. I think the entire series would work better with no human psychics at all. But the rise and fall of human fascism, the Centauri colonial collapse, the time loops, the elder races breaking everything around them, the galactic slide into chaos and (overly) messianic figures standing against it, all combines into a grand epic which outshines pretty much everything. (I would argue new-BSG came close, but it choked at the very last.)

Nojay UK  Oct 22, 2020 • 11:51:34am

re: #382 NetworkKed

Both DS5 and Babylon 5 suffered, in the end, from the problem that most SF of all types has that humans need to be front and centre in the story for humans to be interested in paying for it, to watch it or read it. To Babylon 5’s credit they made the aliens more powerful, more intelligent, more capable but in the end it was a human that became the prophesied Godhead for no particular reason other than TV ratings. Look at most SF films, the current flood of superhero movies etc. and it’s Humanity Uber Alles because that’s the way the audience is wired.
