Just watched the new Borat. Sacha Baron Cohen hasn’t lost his edge! Although this go-around the film is more plot based than the last one. The first Borat was a long string of Borat pranks with real people that tied together with a loose plot, whereas the new Borat has somewhat fewer pranks and more real actors to make a concrete plot. The Minister of Health, Roman Prymula, was busted by a paparazzi for the nation’s most infamous tabloid (Blesk) at a late-night meeting in a restaurant.
That may sound like no biggie, but…..restaurants have been ordered closed in order to stop the spread of COVID-19. The restaurant in question, Rio, is owned by a close associate of the Prime Minister here. Furthermore, neither Mr. Prymula nor Mr. Faltýnek (the owner of the restaurant in question) were wearing face masks as everyone else is required to do, by law. And there were other people there as well….looks like they had quite a little party - all of which is currently prohibited by Health Ministry regulations, said regulations being written and promulgated by Mr. Prymula himself. As an aside, Mr. Prymula is an outspoken advocate of homeopathy and other assorted woowoo.
This rank hypocrisy is, as you might well imagine, the leading story in all Czech media right now - and the opposition is (quite rightly, IMO) demanding Prymula’s immediate resignation.

Folks keep asking questions about when auto manufacturers will come up with long enough life batteries for cars for people who live in areas like I do, &c.
I wonder if a better question would be “how about more passenger trains?” Most every country relies on trains for both short and long trips.
Biden is looking to expand Amtrak, but there are commercial options as well. The UP line which goes through here to the Powder River Basin coal fields could also carry passengers if UP wanted to do it. It hits all the same towns along US-26.
Their line also links up with the line Amtrak uses for the California Zephyr here in Nebraska.

Oil production is based on consumption, there’s no point extracting it if no-one wants to buy it. It’s not a “stuck asset”, it costs more to produce it than the licence fees and extraction taxes per million tonnes of product delivered to a refinery. As for being “forced” to halt CO2 emissions, that isn’t going to happen any time soon because we want energy for clean water, agriculture, lighting, data centres, escalators, production machinery, aeroplanes, personal transport, heating and A/C etc. etc. The other part of the equation is that we, the world-wide “we” don’t want to pay a high price for CO2-free energy so we will pump and burn oil and gas and coal because it’s cheap energy and we’ve agreed to put off dealing with CO2 levels until later, honest.
The Kyoto Protocols back in 1996 agreed we had a problem with CO2 levels in the atmosphere, when it was at a level of 360 parts per million. Today, after the followup Paris Accords were signed a few years ago it is now 430 parts per million and the rate of increase is itself increasing (about 3 ppm per year or so).

Anyway, the “brewing scandal” I mentioned earlier has blown up into a full-blown crisis; the Interior Minister, Jan Hamáček (who’s also Deputy PM) is demanding Health Minister Prymula (he of clandestine meetings in closed pubs) resign immediately, saying that as a result of that fiasco, Prymula’s moral authority has completely vanished.
Meanwhile, the opposition is screaming for Prymula’s head as well. As for Prymula, this was his explanation; he simply went to the address provided by Mr. Faltýnek, totally unaware that it was a pub (despite the fact that he’s been there several times before), had a couple of beers (also prohibited under the current state of emergency regulations), had a “business meeting” with two additional and so far unidentified persons (also prohibited) and topped it off by saying, “It’s really not a big deal.”

There’s a big rugby match this weekend in London, England vs. Barbarians (an all-stars international team, basically). The teams are “bubbled” in hotels along with their coaches, managers etc. before the match because of COVID-19.

As Panhandle health officials reported another influx in coronavirus cases Thursday, with 235 new cases reported, Panhandle Public Health Director Kim Engel described contact tracing efforts as overwhelming.
Health officials reported 235 new cases on Thursday. Active cases have reached a new high of 534 cases. With total cases of 1,631 cases, that means active cases make up 32% of the total cases reported since March 2, a demonstration of how rapidly case numbers are rising in the Panhandle.
The area’s hospitalizations also continue to climb, at the highest level yet with 24 active hospitalization. As of Thursday, Oct. 22, the Panhandle has reported a total of 126 hospitalizations since March 2.
Though ventilator availability in the Panhandle remains at good numbers — at 84% — ICU bed availability is reported at 30% and hospital bed availability is at 43%. Not all hospital or ICU beds are tied up by people with coronavirus, but hospitals have been tasked by Gov. Pete Ricketts with keeping beds available for COVID-19 cases and putting together plans to keep hospitals from becoming overwhelmed.

Hurricane Epsilon is moving away to the north from Bermuda, and the tropical storm warning has been dropped. Epsilon is expected to be absorbed into a low in about five days as it passes near Iceland.

But coal miners and oilfield workers still recall the days when anybody, even without any sort of degree or training who was willing to work long and hard could make a decent living, afford a home and a truck and even a boat or vacation home, put their kids through state college, etc…

The approximate price tag is a quadrillion dollars aka the current US military budget for 150 years, but it’s not going to happen because it requires building lots and lots and lots of EVIL! nuclear reactors (about 40,000 of them).

I think (but am not a climatologist) it’s because we’re in the lee of the Rocky Mountains. Cold air comes spilling down the Laramie Range right into the Panhandle. The highest peak in the Laramie Range is 11,007 feet.

Oil is energy. The US like everywhere else uses lots of energy and wants more energy and cheap energy at that. Oil and gas are free energy, they’re sitting there in the ground like a thick strata of dollar bills that just need pumping to the surface and some processing to make money. The oil and gas industry has make great efforts to squeeze cost out of the oilfield-to-gas-tank operation over the past few decades and they believe they can reduce those costs even more.
Plus there is little “cost” added to them to deal with the real cost of the environmental damage and control that is occurring from handling the oil and the CO2 it emits when burned.
The major change over 70-80 years ago is that the USA no longer has the capability of acting as a sort of global reserve like they did back then. They are basically producing about as much as they economically can to meet domestic demand, and even then the USA is still a net importer.
And if the USA (and Europe) moves away from oil and eventually natural gas into renewables then you start seeing foreign policy shifts as well. Oil/gas exporters lose influence and income and then themselves need to shift into other income sources in order to avoid internal turmoil. (Russia and the Middle East for the most part. Some of the smaller Gulf nations without deep reserves like Saudi Arabia have known this for years. Thus their emphasis on building themselves as finance or banking centers while they still have the oil income to use for that development.)

There have been days when Germany’s wind and solar sources were generating more electricity than their grid could distribute. They are getting out of nuclear and coal plants are also being shut down.
They are considering shutting down their lignite (i.e. dirt) power stations by, I think, 2038 because they need the electricity right now and solar plus wind plus natural gas can’t guarantee to keep the lights on if the weather is “wrong”. The short periods when renewables supplied their total demand for electricity doesn’t cover the entire yearly demands, and of course they burn a lot of natural gas for heating and process energy as well as oil for transport, aircraft etc., all of which needs to be decarbonised too.
My nuclear solution doesn’t need the weather to be right all the time, it produces enough energy for heating, lighting, washing machines, transport for EVERYONE on the planet, not just the rich nations and enough surplus at times to allocate a teraWatt or two to active CO2 decarbonisation.
Nordstream is another issue, but America’s chief opposition to is it is that it competes with imported liquefied natural gas imports from the USA.
Germany envisages burning even more natural gas over the coming decades, not less even with expanded renewables (many of which are approaching end-of-life and will need to be decommissioned and replaced over the coming decade).

Lessening our dependence on oil, coal and other non-renewable energy should be a priority for President Biden. It’s just common sense. It’s not demonizing the oil industry. It’s facing facts.
In the last debate, when Biden didn’t say he was going to end fracking my four teenagers watching said “that’s not good”. I don’t have entrenched beliefs on fracking one way or another. I haven’t heard good things but natural gas is better the oil.
When Biden said last night what he did about the oil industry they all approved. Unequivocally.

Chicago is at the same latitude as Rome — but our winter temperatures are 20 degrees F colder. Of course being in mid-continent as opposed to surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea does make a huge difference.

My understanding of the German situation is that shutting down the nuke plants was a deliberate attempt to manufacture a crisis by the Greens, who assumed that this would force the government into racing new low CO2 renewable energy sources into service. Of course, it ended up doing no such thing, as Germany then starting firing up the coal plants because that was the easiest thing to do. Or, importing coal-based electricity from neighbors, which gives you one level of indirection.
Protip: manufacturing crises doesn’t lead to well-thought-out, sustainable solutions.

The orange skies look a lot like the photographs from Los Angeles earlier.
Long lines of cars made their way out of the area as the fire continued to grow Thursday. And traffic out of the small town of Estes Park was crawling as hundreds tried to evacuate, according to CNN affiliate KUSA.
Families who have already fled the area have been watching their homes go up in flames on home security cameras. One woman saw the fire rush toward her family cabin and doesn’t know if anything is left of her house.

Wikipedia is, of course, wrong, as anybody who bothered to follow the link in the article would find.
You work out the centre of gravity by suspending the cardboard map of the US from some point near an edge then drawing a vertical line down from that point. You then pick another point, suspend the map from there and draw another vertical. Where the two lines cross is the centre of gravity.
Once you know the centre you could balance the map on that point, but it would be ridiculously hard to find that point just by trying to balance it.

Documents filed in Scotts Bluff County Court provide more details in the Nebraska State Patrol’s investigation of a Scottsbluff business owner accused of bootlegging.
Kuldip Singh, 59, has been charged in Scotts Bluff County Court with 10 counts of transporting liquor into state, a Class IV misdemeanor; five counts of evading or attempt to evade liquor tax, a Class II misdemeanor; and five counts of acquiring liquor from someone other than a licensed dealer, a Class IV misdemeanor.
According to a search warrant affidavit filed by the Scotts Bluff County District Court, the Nebraska State Patrol received a complaint from the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission on April 30, 2019, after a wine and spirits wholesaler out of Omaha, Nebraska, reported that its employees had been kicked out of Cheema’s Gas & Liquor store in Scottsbluff. The representative had noticed that a Captain Morgan product had been on Singh’s shelves and he had not ordered the product from the company in a couple of years. The representative believed he had gotten the product from another store, possibly from a store he owned in Torrington.
The Nebraska State Patrol surveilled the business, from June 2019 to June 2020, allegedly observing deliveries of alcohol bottles transported in a vehicle owned by Singh. In August 2020, an investigator observed alcohol being removed from a vehicle owned by Carol Singh. The deliveries of alcohol occurred on several different incidents throughout the year.

Wow. I just can’t even imagine spending that much money, even if prepping to go to a fancy wedding. I did go to my mother’s beauty shop to get a haircut on Tuesday. It cost me $25 and I left a $10 tip. (At the very crowded top-end salon I went to before the pandemic, the charge was $50 plus tip.) It was only me and the stylist/owner in the salon, and the owner was doing things like masking up, propping open her front and back doors to air the place out (it’s somewhat cool enough to do that) and general hygiene provisions.
I cannot cannot cannot imagine dropping $800 or $1350 on a hairstyling, probably for a TV appearance. I just *can’t*.

The Kid and I made a breakfast pizza awhile ago with cinnamon rolls (the unbaked premade kind in the refrigerator dept)rolled out flat and then covered with chopped up apples, a few crushed pecans and baked for a bit longer than the package instructions. Then drizzled with the icing that comes with the rolls. It was pretty yummy, we cut it up like a pizza and we called it Sunday morning pizza.

Does acting presidential include nonsensical lies that are easily fact-checked about absolutely everything?
Does it include punting on a pandemic response that has killed 230,000+ Americans officially or 300,000 excess deaths? Trump thinks this is a success? Trump tried dragging Obama when there were a handful of ebola cases in the US. He tried dragging Obama and biden for under 20,000 H1N1 deaths over 2 years. Trump’s done 10x worse in less than half the time. Trump’s solution is wishful thinking and that vaccines will save the day - even though the timeline for the vaccines is still off in the future, and it’ll be the end of next year before there’s enough vaccine to go around to everyone who needs it.
In the meantime, Trump still refuses to mandate masks and Trump has politicized the issue to the point where GOP states are leading the spike in cases, and the states he touted as success stories for reopening faster and without precautions are now leading the nation in cases: Texas and Florida.
NY and NJ were in the very first wave when we had the least amount of information about how to deal with the pandemic and when everything was in short supply. Trump made no effort to help, and actively interfered in the process to make it difficult for states to obtain needed materials. The death tolls in those states is shockingly high, but what’s worse is that all the states that had time and space to make preparations and to promote mask and social distancing ignored those lessons and the outcome is that those states are seeing the bulk of cases and deaths now.
In terms of cases per million residents, NY and NJ now rank 23 and 25 overall. Tops is ND and SD.
In terms of deaths per million though, NY and NJ are top 2 (again, they were the first wave).
Trump has wrecked the economy precisely because he refuses to contain the pandemic. Had he done an average job as compared to every other OECD country, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in, and Trump would probably be cruising to a reelection win. Instead, he’s done gone and fucked it all to hell and takes zero responsibility for any of it.

They are considering shutting down their lignite (i.e. dirt) power stations by, I think, 2038 because they need the electricity right now and solar plus wind plus natural gas can’t guarantee to keep the lights on if the weather is “wrong”. The short periods when renewables supplied their total demand for electricity doesn’t cover the entire yearly demands, and of course they burn a lot of natural gas for heating and process energy as well as oil for transport, aircraft etc., all of which needs to be decarbonised too.
My nuclear solution doesn’t need the weather to be right all the time, it produces enough energy for heating, lighting, washing machines, transport for EVERYONE on the planet, not just the rich nations and enough surplus at times to allocate a teraWatt or two to active CO2 decarbonisation.

If I had access to a big chunk of the Sahara, I would be wracking my brains trying to figure out how to build a terrawatt-capable solar plant there, and to get the electricity to any place in Africa that was willing to build infrastructure to tap into it. During one of our recent weekly conversations with our brother, I made the casual observation that, assuming we don’t destroy the world, eventually we will be united under something like a single world government. Of course, I’m thinking of a Star Trek future. He took umbrage to that suggestion — because how could people of such different backgrounds live in some form of harmony. He really has bought into the argument — that so doesn’t apply to the reality of the United States as opposed to the Trump fantasy — that countries are bound by their historical blood lines and cannot endure if you try to bring in other nationalities. As John McCain so eloquently said, we are “a nation of ideals and not blood and soil”. Eventually, the rest of the world will come around to that philosophy.

Hey, look who’s back (me).
I have stayed away from the political debates in this hyper-political, partisan season.
I also managed to somehow test positive for this COVID-19 thing. I had mild symptoms in September. The week before Labor Day I came down with some chills and aches that lasted for a couple of days. Then I felt better and I assumed all was well. Then two weeks later the symptoms came back. They lasted a couple of days, then went away again, and again I assumed I was fine.
Then the next week the symptoms came back and I decided to get tested.
I’ve been free of chills and aches (I was never feverish at any point) since late September.
Still working from home, as I have since March.
And hoping Election Day 2020 is not a repeat of 2016.
Update: I also voted by mail last week, which I hope makes Donny mad.

If I had access to a big chunk of the Sahara, I would be wracking my brains trying to figure out how to build a terrawatt-capable solar plant there, and to get the electricity to any place in Africa that was willing to build infrastructure to tap into it. That just seems like a place where you can mostly count on the sun, day in and day out.
Probably wind available as well. Unfortunately I expect sand+wind is probably complete hell on equipment, solar panels, and windmill blades.
Though I’d be curious if there would be an alternate (though probably even less efficient than solar panels) method to make use of consistent sun and high temps. Perhaps some sort of fluid heat exchange unit using the sun and perhaps mirrors to “use” solar to make steam to run a turbine for generating electricity.

Panhandle Geotechnical and Environmental began working at the stoplight area in Kimball on Monday morning. According to Mayor Keith Prunty, PGE has contracted with the state to drill about 30 wells in the immediate area to remove petroleum that was discovered in the soil and groundwater when underground petroleum tanks were removed about 30 years ago.Prunty said it will take about six weeks to drill all the wells and then four years, at least, to remove the petroleum from the soil and groundwater.
Nancy Mann from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy reported that two systems to clean up the groundwater and soil will be installed this week by Geotechnical Environmental from Scottsbluff. One system will be installed south of Highway 71 and another system will be located north of Highway 71. The sites are known as George’s Amoco and Kimball Texaco.

I have run into that particular argument from apologists of nearly every Christian denomination. It is very much a thought-stopper for Christians, much like “socialism” is one for conservatives.
The argument pre-supposes if you do a thing (wear a mask in this case), then your faith is weak and you’re not a good Christian.

Likely by a blizzard of overwrought ads in the PA and OH markets, hysterically ranting about how Joe Biden and the Democrats are going to “abolish oil” and “destroy jobs and economies” all to placate “radical environmentalist wackos” , i.e. anti-American Dirty-Fucking-Hippie Communists.
