“Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison became the first U.S. Senate candidate in American history to pass the $100 million mark for fundraising and spending in early October as he continued to shatter national cash records in his race against South Carolina’s Republican incumbent Lindsey Graham,” the Charleston Post & Courier reports.

He needs to run more “attack” ads against Constitution Party candidate Bill Bledsoe to make absolutely sure that everyone knows he is “too conservative for South Carolina” because of his pro-Trump, pro-guns and anti-abortion positions. He’s got more money to spend than the Trump Campaign.

The Price for Not Wearing Masks: Perhaps 130,000 Lives (New York Times via MSN)

The article reports on a study published in Nature (the compete study is linked there).

Universal mask use could prevent nearly 130,000 deaths from Covid-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, in the United States through next spring, scientists reported on Friday.

Brendan Mcdermid/Reuters “Increasing mask use is one of the best strategies that we have right now to delay the imposition of social distancing mandates and all the economic effects of that, and save lives,” said one expert.

The findings follow an assertion by Dr. Scott W. Atlas, the president’s science adviser, that masks are ineffective, in a tweet later taken down by Twitter for spreading misinformation. On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released new guidance recommending mask use in public settings, including public transportation.

A surge of infections, driven in part by neglect of safety precautions, has begun to overwhelm hospitals in much of the nation. More than 75,000 new cases were reported in the United States on Thursday, the second-highest daily total nationwide since the pandemic began. Eight states set single-day case records.

These numbers are likely to continue through the fall and winter, with a steady rise in cases and deaths until January and staying high after that point, said Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington and lead author of the report.

and

The new study, published in the journal Nature Medicine, also offered a rough estimate of the pandemic’s toll in the United States: perhaps 500,000 deaths by March 2021, even with social distancing mandates reinstated in most states.

Other experts cautioned that, as with any model, the new estimates are based on many assumptions and should not be seen as predictions.

“It’s not a prediction or forecast, because we can will this number out of existence,” said Shweta Bansal, an infectious disease modeler at Georgetown University who was not involved in the new work.

Instead, she said, the model should be seen as a “sophisticated thought experiment” whose conclusions can significantly change if people alter their behavior.

Good luck with that. We’re ruled by genocidaires. At this point it appears they want a genocide, not that they are inept or uninformed.

Done and done.

COLUMBIA — In the closing weeks of South Carolina’s competitive U.S. Senate race, Democratic challenger Jaime Harrison has escalated efforts to elevate the profile of a third-party candidate in an apparent last-minute bid to peel off conservative voters dissatisfied with Republican incumbent Lindsey Graham.

First in digital ads and now in television spots that have begun hitting South Carolina airwaves, Harrison’s ads alert voters to the fact that “right-wing Constitution Party candidate” Bill Bledsoe is still on the ballot and warns them that he is “too conservative for South Carolina.”

re: #321 cat-tikvah

If I was a nasty person, I’d add that someone whose faith protects them from pathogens does not need and should not seek medical care if they become ill, as their course of illness will be divinely ordained.

I’ve snarkily suggested to my emergency medicine husband that the sanctimioniously devout need to sign public declarations that they lack true faith if they receive care. Otherwise, they can be directed to the on-site chapel and take up their case with God.

Well, medical personnel tend to work to save people, even from themselves.

That would make one powerful counter-apologetics video for YouTube though.

That’s going to be hard when Trump should be facing trail or already convicted at that point for his felony conduct relating to Cohen’s case. Throw in the NY prosecutions that are likely, along with the DOJ cases that he subverted thanks to Barr, there’s a bunch of criminal acts that he’s yet to be held accountable for.

It’s hard to run for office out of a jail cell (which is where he belongs today, not until after he leaves the WH). The DOJ policy about indictments needs to be completely revamped and updated to never allow someone the opportunity to avoid justice while in the WH.

No one is above the law. Least of all the president.

Yes, this would be legally, ethically, and morally wrong and indefensible.

It lives only in the collection of pointed imaginary ideas I’ve come up with over the years.

By the way, I identify as a person of faith. It’s the hypocrisy of the sanctimonious that irks me no end. I taught religious school for over a decade and each year included sharing these 4 sayings:
Pray as if everything depends on God, act as if everything depends on you.
The work is not yours to finish, but neither are you free to take no part in it.
Talk minus action = zero. (got that one off a button!)
If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, what am I? If not now, when?

Personally, I’m agnostic theologically. But how I conduct myself should reflect well on what I claim are my religious values. America is meant to uphold freedom of religion and freedom from religion. I know it falls short.

Flashing their weapons on Fox News,
Killing protesters as they choose
Screaming about the evil Jews,
“Where is JFK Jr?”
All the world wondered.

Deflated and sundered.

[Embedded content]

Basically, Schumer’s warning McConnell that by ignoring Judiciary rules about lacking a quorum, McConnell is blowing up yet another bit of comity and means that when Democrats retake the Senate in January, there’s going to be wholesale changes to a whole bunch of things, particularly the judiciary - greatly expanding the size, adding judges to the federal bench, and calling to add states to the Union.

In other words, McConnell shredding comity has unleashed hell, and this is his last chance to take it all back.

Thing is, Democrats should not only make the threat now, but go ahead and make these changes anyways. The judiciary should be greatly expanded. We shouldn’t have the Supreme Court packed with right wing extremists thanks to McConnell singlehandedly manipulating the size of the bench as it suits him, and the only reason Barrett is on the federal bench in the first place is because she gained a seat that McConnell gamed by obstructing Obama’s pick before that.

Barrett is unqualified and lacks the experience.

re: #54 NO SMOCKING GUN!

This was today’s email to my senator, Toomey (Vichy, PA). Even if yours are all in, please contact them with your opposition. Those up for re-election may have second thoughts.

I urge Senator Toomey to reconsider his yes vote to confirm Barrett to the Supreme Court, for these reasons:
1. His frank hypocrisy regarding a SCOTUS nomination in an election year as per his 2016 stance 8 months before an election. The convenient change of rationale is not credible. Pennsylvanians are already voting - my ballot has been received - and most of us want a say in the direction of the Court. Any nomination must wait until the next president takes office in January.
2. Barrett refused to commit to recusing herself from any election-related cases. Trump has explicitly said that he wants her on the Court to hand him the presidency in an election he will contest. This alone should disqualify her. A person of integrity and honor would categorically commit to recusal under these circumstances. Barrett’s refusal speaks to her character and proves her unworthy of a lifetime appointment to the Court.
3. Legacy - In confirming Barrett he will seal his legacy as a Trump enabler, complicit in the assault on fundamental democratic norms for the sake of partisan power. This is a stain that will never come off. I would urge Senator Toomey to consider his legacy. As he is not running for re-election, he can act with independence, as he once claimed he would. Otherwise, he is the very rubber stamp he pledged he would not be.
Walter Shaub, former head of the Office of Govt Ethics wrote: When this is over, when the lights are turned back on, it will become clear that there were only two kinds of people: Those who stood against Trump’s corruption, cruelty and degradation of American values, and those who enabled him.
Senator Toomey, your move.

Toomey ran in 2016 as a so-called moderate who promised to act independently and not be a rubber stamp for Trump. That was a carefully constructed lie after he won as a hard-right candidate in 2010. Philadelphia Magazine did a piece on this strategy which featured a quote that Toomey is one of the most conservative senators in the Senate, “as conservative as a Gadsden flag sticker on an F-150.”

Ah the Little Nazi is trying to walk back his racist comment!

Madison Cawthorn, the Republican candidate running for former Rep. Mark Meadows’ (R-NC) old seat, scrambled to put out the fire sparked on Thursday by his racist attack involving Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ), who is Black, and a journalist who volunteered for Booker’s 2020 presidential campaign.

Cawthorn had posted the now-revised broadside on moetaxes.com, his website about Democratic opponent Moe Davis. The post attacked Davis’ ties to reporter and ex-Boston University dean Tom Fiedler, who “quit his academia job in Boston to work for non-white males, like Cory Booker, who aims to ruin white males running for office.” The broken grammar made it unclear whether it was Fiedler or Booker whom Cawthorn was accusing of victimizing white male candidates.

I think he’s still in denial but is having trouble coming to terms with so many people no longer propping him up.

Last night I mentioned something he was doing was comparable to Hitler, after already planning his suicide, started talking to Keitel about recapturing oilfields because they couldn’t do any widespread operations.

I mentioned that because I was watching Downfall at the time. The first time I’ve seen it all the way through in over a decade. There are some amazing feats of denial and alternate reality pulled by Hitler in the movie. Just the couple of times he mentioned “when we win the war”, while the Soviets were 1 km away was mind-boggling.

Hitler repeatedly made a big deal of how the Nazis were actually protecting the Western Democracies from the Soviets and that they were dooming themselves by not going along with it. Sounds at lot like Clownstick ranting about Antifa.

There’s example after example I could bring up of parallels.

It all very much reminds me of how FFVCS and all his goons have been acting lately, especially how they were acting after the debate last night. His close goons on Twitter were the worst. Completely alternate reality that’s about to collapse like a neutron star.

The Price for Not Wearing Masks: Perhaps 130,000 Lives (New York Times via MSN)

The article reports on a study published in Nature (the compete study is linked there).

and

Good luck with that. We’re ruled by genocidaires. At this point it appears they want a genocide, not that they are inept or uninformed.

I think it’s Putin’s price for sanctuary. He knows he will face a shit storm of sanctions and international condemnation for his meddling when a different administration takes over, and wants to make it worth his while.
I think this is also fed by eugenicists here in the States. As former Lubbock City councilman Todd Klein said in demanding an end to the lockdown this spring, Covid kills mostly “the elderly, the obese, and smokers” and therefore was not worth the financial cost of the lockdown to everyone else.
It’s been my observation that these kinds of ideas have really taken hold among what I call the “hinterland gentry” in recent years. They have always emphasized “good breeding” and social darwinism to justify their retention of privilege but with the increasing pressure against that privilege, they have moved to a new level. They have formulated a fantasy ideology of eugenics to justify their pretensions, and used their real world influence (through their political arm, the GOP) to make it real.
There is also a strong element of personal denialism in this move to eugenics among local elites. Generational decay is real in this demographic, the product of bad reproductive choices, poor child-rearing practices, and fragmented, dysfunctional families that are held together by social pressure alone. We all know the crooked, but smart, local boss whose children turned out to be coke-snorting low-lifes and drooling idiots. They know that their privilege would be swept away on a level playing field, and they will do literally anything, including complicity in treason and mass murder, to keep it from being leveled.

Memories of PA Supreme Court Justice Orie who was indicted, convicted and jailed. Pennsylvania Republicans refused to impeach and remove her and they deliberately kept her seat unfilled which is why the Democrats swept the next Judicial election.

Now the Pennsylvania Republicans are planning to gerrymander the State Supreme Court having judges elected by districts which the gerrymandered legislature would draw…

In her backpack, the teen had two T-shirts, one of which said, “Free Dylann Storm Roof,” and had swastikas drawn on the sleeves. “I do believe myself to be a white supremacist” was written on the other side of one of the shirts, Greene added.

The Georgia teen will get court-ordered counseling in addition to her detention time and probation. Her sentence also mandates an apology letter to the church.

Well, that’ll teach her.

And this really gets me—it is almost word for word what was said at an AME vigil I attended after Dylann Roof. I was astounded at the level of forgiveness and kindness at the time, and still am. (They have more compassion for these assholes than I do.)

Bishop Reginald T. Jackson, the presiding prelate of the Sixth Episcopal District of the AME Church covering Georgia, said in a statement, “while we are angered and frustrated by this incident, we do not hold hostility against this defendant. While she apparently hates or hated us, we do not hate her, and do not wish to nullify her future, and do not give up on her.”

Teddy had his follow-up appointment today. The surgeon said he’s well within the normal range for post FHO surgery. She said everything I’d been doing for him is paying off.

Now the rehab begins. We’re to start doing slow 10 minute walks. The big thing is to get him to start using the FHO leg. She gave me a few tips (walking in figure eights, walking up hill, slowly going up some stairs) to get him to use the leg.

My darling Teddy is going to be okay. I feel I can breathe for the first time in about three weeks.

My wife has the gift of premonition.
Last night she dreamed that Federal squads were in our home seizing guns, knives, “unauthorized foods” and stored water. They said we had been “reported”.
Becca awoke crying.
What happened to our freedom? She asked.
What indeed.

The gnocchi sound good.

For a first attempt they were awesome. Light like pillows. The sauce was ok. Bottled with some additions.

Next time the gnocchi needs a little more flour and I’ll make a bechamel myself.

But overall…7/10. Not bad for the first time.

Well, round 1 of car repair was a total FAIL. The job: Replace the belt and tensioner on my formerly daily driver. The challenge: The components in question sit under the passenger side motor mount, requiring one to put a jack under the engine and remove the motor mount, physically disconnecting the engine from the frame on one side, to access the tensioner and belt. The conundrum: After removing the frame side of the motor mount, I was unable to get my socket wrench on the bolts to remove the engine side of the mount and gain access to the parts subject to replacement.

As usual, this white American is horrified at the idea that legal consequences for anything might happen to him, and equates this with a loss of ‘freedom’. Never mind that a scenario like this happens all the time in houses of colour, often with more shooting, just as it did with Breonna Taylor.

I have learned that when Americans say, ‘it’s a free country’, they do so with a very particular understanding of what ‘freedom’ is. Freedom, in this case, means the ability to do essentially whatever they want, without constraint by any law or authority. They say this because the purpose of American law is just that - to constrain but not protect one group of people, and protect another group of people without constraining them. It exists to divide society into ‘good’ people, who are generally white and enjoy freedom from any restrictions, and ‘bad’ people, who are generally not white and are there to be kept in line by the authority of the state. The concept of a law applying to someone in the in-group is horrifying, because then they’re not ‘free’ - they’re just the same as the other group.

This is why I always say that nobody in Trumpworld will ever face a legal consequence of any kind. The idea of laws applying to someone of the ruling class (white Republican men) is completely contrary not only to how the past couple of decades have been, but to the very idea of American law itself. It just wouldn’t be America any more if it didn’t work that way.

re: #306 Renaissance_Man

Ah, an excuse to post (again) the best definition of conservatism I’ve ever seen:

“There is only conservatism. No other political philosophy actually exists; by the political analogue of Gresham’s Law, conservatism has driven every other idea out of circulation. There might be, and should be, anti-conservatism; but it does not yet exist. What would it be? In order to answer that question, it is necessary and sufficient to characterize conservatism. Fortunately, this can be done very concisely. Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect…

…There is nothing more or else to it, and there never has been, in any place or time. For millenia, conservatism had no name, because no other model of polity had ever been proposed. “The king can do no wrong.” In practice, this immunity was always extended to the king’s friends, however fungible a group they might have been. Today, we still have the king’s friends even where there is no king (dictator, etc.). Another way to look at this is that the king is a faction, rather than an individual.

As the core proposition of conservatism is indefensible if stated baldly, it has always been surrounded by an elaborate backwash of pseudophilosophy, amounting over time to millions of pages. All such is axiomatically dishonest and undeserving of serious scrutiny. Today, the accelerating de-education of humanity has reached a point where the market for pseudophilosophy is vanishing; it is, as The Kids Say These Days, tl;dr . All that is left is the core proposition itself — backed up, no longer by misdirection and sophistry, but by violence.

So this tells us what anti-conservatism must be: the proposition that the law cannot protect anyone unless it binds everyone, and cannot bind anyone unless it protects everyone….

The core proposition of anti-conservatism requires no supplementation and no exegesis. It is as sufficient as it is necessary. What you see is what you get…

Yes it was, and in the WaPo article with the quote, they point it out (I left it out for dramatic effect of Anna’s lyrics//)

“We’re not entering a dark winter,” Trump said. “We’re entering the final turn and approaching the light at the end of the tunnel” — a phrase most commonly associated with the U.S. government’s false optimism about the Vietnam War.

And furthermore, that if you go back to the late 50s, you could count the number of radio stations that weren’t white-run on both hands. WVON in Chicago, WDIA in Memphis, WLIB in NY, WOL in Washington, KGFJ in LA, and plenty of fingers left to spare. “We use only the finest free-range fruit and nut fed hippies and moonbats in our new line of Alferd Packer’s Finest hot dogs. Cheese chunk, barbecue, and plain Democrat flavors. Pick up a pack for your next cook-out or shooting party. And for your long term preparation needs try our new Cthulhu’s Choice combat sausage and tactical jerky products, vaccuum packed in surplus Russian ammo cans, with a guaranteed shelf life of 500 years. Delicious and peculiarly satisfying!”
